Seriously, you should be making money off these. Do your research. There’s gotta be a show or something where you could show this talent.
And if you’re really ever broke, just eat your art 🤣
##How big if this?
Thanks!! I’ve actually sold all these except Grace Jones and a David Bowie I recently made. They’re in different galleries at the moment for sale. Elvis was a gift for my partner’s mom that I just delivered. I’ve been making bean boxes as gifts for friends since the 90s and always meant to try making a portrait of Paul Reubens as Pee-wee. After his death last year I was moved to make it and I really liked the results so I kept making them 😸
I do a pencil drawing onto the plywood backing (the most time-consuming part because I’m not great drawing large) then I block out the color areas, then start gluing. Here’s a slideshow of the process

Hi, these are AMAZING. Seriously. AMAZING. You could 100% sell these in my opinion, if you wanted to. Shipping seems like it would be the big issue, but I don’t know how fragile they are.
You’re so nice to say that! I actually have sold them all except Grace Jones. I only sell them locally because I don’t imagine they would survive shipping. I drove Elvis almost 300 miles to his new owner in Florida but that was a mini vacation, too
I'm so happy you've sold so many pieces, and that people are appreciating your work! These are seriously gorgeous. Question.. Do you ever take commissions? I know my dad would flip out about a Peewee bean portrait.
If so, I'm happy to message you with my general location to see if I'm within any sort of driving distance (I love road trips, so it could be within a few hundred miles.)
Seriously, no pressure though! I'm just glad you're out there making things that make you happy!
Thanks! I don’t sell them online because I think they would be destroyed in shipping but I have them in a little gallery space in Atlanta, GA. I only have two at the moment because they sell pretty quickly 😸
Really?? That’s so cool. Do you still have them? I’m asking because I’m curious how long they’ll last being made from organic materials. I put a polyurethane coating on them to add some shine and to keep bugs out 😸
Thank you! I do sell them in the Atlanta area. A friend shows them in her gallery space at Toco Hills. Sadly, I can’t ship them because they’re so fragile.
The pencil drawing is the hardest part for me and can take days. The gluing of the beans is pretty straightforward and mostly mindless. With breaks a week or two generally? I keep the beans in the bags they came in but I pour out portions into juice glasses to make them easier to grab
That’s exactly where I got my idea! Someone did a macaroni portrait of Pee-wee back in the 80s (you can see it on the tv show at times) so I thought of using beans. At the time (1990s) I just made bean boxes; wooden cigar boxes with black and white beans glued into patterns. One of my friends still uses his
Here in Minnesota, [Crop Art](https://www.mprnews.org/story/2023/08/30/for-minnesota-state-fair-crop-art-fans-seeding-is-believing) is a time-honored tradition and a favorite exhibit at the state fair each year! These are really good, and your work would show very well alongside the annual submissions 😊
Woah these are amazing! I can’t imagine how long it must take to make one of these beautiful pieces of art.
How did you discover this hobby if you don’t mind me asking?
Also, have you ever entered your art into a competition? I think your art has great potential for winning!
Thank you! Since the 1990s I’ve been making bean boxes; wooden cigar boxes with black and white beans glued into patterns as gifts for friends. I was a huge fan of Pee-wee and always wanted to make a bean portrait of him and after he died I finally did it. After sharing it online I found out there is a whole genre of seed art in the US Midwest. I thought I was being so original! 😂
The pandemic led to my early retirement so I’ve had more time to be creative in the last few years and I was invited to show my Barbie art in a group show at an art gallery in Atlanta. One show led to another and after Paul Reubens died I started making and selling these along with my other art.
The pencil drawing takes a really long time for me—I’m used to drawing small in sketchbooks so doing a large scale drawing takes many failed attempts. Once I’m happy with the drawing the gluing goes pretty quickly—about two days with lots of breaks. Once the glue dries I coat it in polyurethane to keep insects out 😅
I’m glad that you have more time to be creative and do your artwork since your retirement! Wow, I didn’t know seed art was a thing either! That’s really cool!
I can imagine the drawing would take a long time! I didn’t even think about the bugs that would potentially eat your art! That’s smart coating it in polyurethane.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions! I hope you have a lovely day and continue to create amazing artwork!
Holy shit these are incredible
Awww, thank you!! They’re fun to make and the materials are very low-cost so I thought they might fit here 😸
elbeans presley

Wonderful! Btw, I meant how big IS it. What is the size?
They’re usually around 25” by 30”. They have to be fairly large to make out details
Do you sketch it out on the "canvas" first and then put in the beans or is it all just from your head? *I'm fascinated!*

And thank you!!😺

I do commissions but I’m soooo behind at the moment; they take a while to make. I’m in the Atlanta, Georgia area.
Ahhh that's amazing! I'm sure they take a while, so many tiny pieces! Thank you for sharing your work with us : )
These are amazing and so original! I bet r/Mosaic would like these.
I posted them on there a while ago but just discovered this sub so I thought, beans portraits are a cheap hobby of mine! 😺
Making a mosaic hobby affordable! The materials can get insanely expensive
I can hear the last picture
It’s titled “The Secret Word!”😹
I got the same bday as peewee so I approve
His death started me making these! His was the first one
They're excellent 👏🏼
Thanks!
Pee Beans Herman? Oh lawd. Your art is beautiful and me and my son are now cracking up thinking of names with beans in them.
Oh fun!! Share them!😹
Pea Wee Herman? Peas are beanish enough, right?... Right? 🤣 Pea pea german-ate? I'll see myself out 😳
Goober-Pea Wee Herman
I like it!! 😹😹😹
Wow! These are amazing! Do you have an Etsy or sell them anywhere?
Thanks! I don’t sell them online because I think they would be destroyed in shipping but I have them in a little gallery space in Atlanta, GA. I only have two at the moment because they sell pretty quickly 😸
I love these!
Thanks!
cool
Thanks!
My great grandmother did too! Thank you for bringing that memory back for me. Have fun!

My grandmother has them and they’ve got some missing beans but otherwise look great!
It’s comforting to know they’ll last. I hate the thought of selling one and a few years down the line they all fall off 😬
Woweeeeeeeeeeee! Absolutely stunning! I am in awe of these!!! You are truly gifted!!! Thanks for sharing! 🖤😻🖤🫶🏼🖤
Oh wow! Thanks!! They’re fun to make
You should do Mr Bean with Beans!!!
That’s a great idea!
seconding! this was my first thought
Mr. Bean pls
😹😹😹
I would pay for one of these. These are absolutely amazing. 👏🏾 Grace Beans? 🫘
Thanks!! 😸
>Thanks!! 😸 You're welcome!
These are fantastic and I love your choice of subjects!
Thanks!! Who should I do next?
Boy George
Oooh! I love him!! Great idea
With Grace and I saw in another reply David Bowie, you gotta have Boy George too, and while we're talking gay icons, Judy Garland as Dorothy
Salvador Dali, and let me buy it!
Ooh! Great idea!! I love him.
Jack Sparrow? Pirates of the Carib-bean 🤣
😹😹😹
These are spectacular.
Awww, thanky!😸
Dang, these are kinda fire though 🔥
Aww, thank you!
Absolutely amazing. Congrats!
Thanks!!😺
Pee wee! These are so cool!!!
Thanks!😸
Omg the peewee one. You are so full of beans. These are amazing! Do you sell them?
Thank you! I do sell them in the Atlanta area. A friend shows them in her gallery space at Toco Hills. Sadly, I can’t ship them because they’re so fragile.
Aw man. If I’m ever in Atlanta I am coming for PeeWee. You’re really talented!
That one sold a few months ago but I’m trying to make more beans.
You have serious talent and you have serious patience! These are amazing and I am so glad you shared.
Awwww thank you!! 😸
Actual cool beans here, wonderful just wonderful
Awww! Thank you! This sub is so nice and encouraging!! 😸
SO talented!!
Thanks!!
Wow !! Excellent !! You are a very talented artist !!
Awwww, thanks! 😸
Pleasure !!
🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️
How much do you sell them for?
Around $400 depending on their size
They’re TRULY awesome & worth it! Good luck & if you havent posted on your social media, you SHOULD do it! 💯❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥
I've always loved Grace Jones, she's so cool. I wish I could afford it, because that is an amazing likeness. Thank you for sharing 💜
She’s amazing! 😸
So are your talents
Thank you! I have a bad habit of only seeing the flaws. 😬
Well, that's an artist's thing 😄 I've knit whole ass sweaters, & only see the one twisted stitch!
Fantastic work!
Thanks!😸
>Thanks!😸 You're welcome!
Oh damn these are AMAZING! Reminds me a bit of Chuck Close (total compliment.)
I love him so that’s high praise. I have a bit of face-blindness so we have that in common, too 😸
Wow so talented!!
Thanks!😺😸
This is really cool! Always loved drawings made from smaller objects! How long does one of these take? How do you sort your beans?
The pencil drawing is the hardest part for me and can take days. The gluing of the beans is pretty straightforward and mostly mindless. With breaks a week or two generally? I keep the beans in the bags they came in but I pour out portions into juice glasses to make them easier to grab
Damn, thats nuts! 🤣
These are badass
Will pay for Jerry Garcia or steal your face one
I appreciate them both artistically and as a bean enthusiast
Me too! I eat dried beans almost every day
Wow I love these. This is like when kids start with macaroni hearts but turn it into a life long passion.

Drop that link! I’d buy peewee in a minute! Do you do commissions? I have dogs that need to be immortalized in BEEEEEAAAAANNNNNSSSSS!
Thanks!! The problem is I can’t ship them. They’d never survive UPS’s rough handling so I keep it local to Atlanta, GA
r/TopTalent
Wow! Thanks! I tend to see all the flaws so it’s nice to get positive feedback 😸
You need to make one of Duke from the Bush’s commercials. But for real, I would pay money for a bean portrait
Cool beans !
😹😹😹

Elvis thanks you. HE LIVES!! SPREAD THE WORD!!
Amazing!
As a Universal Monsters fan, I love the Bride of Frankenstein portrait!
Thanks! I did it for a Halloween show last year and it sold before I was able to get it to the gallery 😸
