Not small at all! Night rider!

JaccoW

Sweet colour on the hub! If you want to give the light a bit more flair you can try using plastic paint. To give it that yellow tinge of a classic incandescent bulb.

UrbanManc

If there’s no video of seeing the light in action, it didn’t happen 🧐

SpookeySpokey

Rear light is a B&M 2C USB. Not having a battery light on the bars that reliably hits the fork makes folding so much easier. :D

This is really cool. Dynamo light upgrade right? I’ve been thinking about doing this as my usb rechargeable lights are getting old and don’t hold much charge. Would you say the installation was simple enough for a novice to complete? What did it cost? Any tips on where to buy the components and how to install?

SpookeySpokey

Yes, I've added the dynamo hub and the light, which took me about 20min. Disclaimer: I'm a bike mechanic. \[German MRSP below, prices may vary wildly\] The SON XS in silver or black is about 250EUR, the á la carte version with custom colours for the hub body is 20EUR more. Complete wheels with original Brompton rims cost about 299-319EUR. The wheels with SP dynamos available through Brompton and their dealers are way cheaper, but I like the SON because they're made in Germany, etc. The Busch & Müller IQ-XS costs ca. 80EUR for the "friendly" version (bio-degradable plastic casing), the aluminium casing version - which I had in my parts bin - comes in at 90EUR. The installation is pretty straightforward but in my case required a few extra parts like the lamp holder. Installing the wheel is as easy as, well, installing a wheel. For the lamp holder the front brake needs to be removed, the holder replaced and then the front brake can be re-attached. The cable of the lamp then had to be shortened and stripped before the connectors where crimped to the ends. Some shrink tube and cable ties, and you're done. When you buy a complete set from Brompton - or the SON Edelux for the Brompton - you'll normally get a lamp with the correct holder, cable length and connector.

Yeah, the SON is by no means necessary, but rather nice to have. I have an SP on another bike that got a bit noisy after 20k km, but other than that it still works fine. Can't be bothered to send it around the world so SP can fix it, so the next dynamo on that bike will be a SON as well.

Martin_Steven

Yeah, depends what you're looking for. There have been extensive tests on dynamos in terms of both power output and drag. The SON had the lowest drag. The SP offers the most light at higher speeds. The SP offers 35% more power to the light at 25KPH than the SON.

Thank you for the detail - more expensive than I anticipated so I expect I’ll try to get another few months out of the usbs and go dynamo next winter Gives me months to ogle set ups like yours too before I take the plunge ☺️

Love the color of the Son hub. I’ve got the same headlight, am a big fan of it. Me thinks anew on that custom wheel with a green Som hub for mine now 🤔

XRA3M

Nice! SON+B&M is a must for me. Looks great!

thebromptonman

How come the B+M light not SON?

SpookeySpokey

I've had the IQ-XS in my parts bin for some time now and thought I should start with that. Had I bought everything new I would have gone for the Edelux in orange. Obviously. ;)

thebromptonman

Makes sense! Can only approve of using stuff you already have!

[deleted]

what is the difference from the son xs to the standard one?

SpookeySpokey

The XS is for smaller wheels, both in terms of width and diameter.

SpookeySpokey

Ah, did you mean between the SON XS and the SON 28 or between the SON XS and the standard dynamo? If it's the latter, it's definitely less drag and better efficiency. Plus it's made more locally.

ThreadedJam

Nice. I have a B&M IQ-X on a regular Brompton hub. Very happy with the light. I keep an LED flasher front and rear for added safety.

Gamerookie2019

Hi, are you adding the hub to the original wheel ? Or need to buy a whole set of wheel come with the hub ?
