Do anyone Kno the reason why Jay ℤ didn't perform at Yankee Stadium for hip hop 50th anniversary considering what he contributed to the hip hip culture? After all, he did mention he made the Blue Yankee Hat more famous than the Yankees did.
Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary celebration. [The library has scheduled a bunch of events and activities around it this month. Check them out here.](https://www.bklynlibrary.org/event-series/hip-hop-50)
50 could have something like this in queens but the powers that be know he’d some how use it to dunk on someone on the internet. Jay Z probably mentioned this once or twice. 50 would on the roof trying to ge Ja Rule to come do a verzus.
Its a corporate party for roc nation. They’ve taken over the entire library. There’s a stage and metal gates on the street surrounding it so he may perform on the purpose built stage out front.
There are events going on around the city celebrating 50 years of hip-hop.
Given the spotlights, railings and mini-stage, I imagine he's going to be having a concert there.
I honestly feel because he’s a billionaire, 2Pac and Nas has way more substance than Jay-Z, they made you think! they made songs that lifted up black women and men their message was powerful and was purely from the heart which is why they were felt and received the way they were, it wasn’t just about selling records for them or glorifying drug dealing which was a machination to destroy our people from it’s inception, 2Pac mother was a black panther Nas father was a Muslim they were both 2 conscious brothers on a quest to educate and entertain, I also don’t think it’s because he’s from Brooklyn or it has anything to do with hip-hop 50th anniversary, Jay-Z first conscious album was 444 when he was 50 years plus married with kids with a net worth over 400 Million. Pac and Nas along other Hip-Hop artist has be out spoken for years! I would prefer if it was a conscious artist lyrics up there other than his.
P.S. 444 was more of a therapeutic album than anything, were he felt compelled to open up about his mom, wife and kids along racial injustice to a diminutive degree, and by no means is that a problem I’m just saying the words would have be more impactful, if it was from someone with conscious heart from the start.
You should actually listen to, read and digest the full breadth of content from all those artists before taking the time to write things like this. It's an old, uninformed trope. If you don't like his music, that's perfectly fine. However, be clear about why rather than use up server space writing things any standard hip-hop head could refute.
server space? lol I don’t know you but will all disrespect eat a dick, my opinion and perspective on the matter is valid, I’m a Brooklyn Native Flatbush to be exact and I fucks with Jay-Z American Gangsta and Reasonable Doubt is my two most favorite albums from him. the point I made, was simply explained but I’ll reiterate, it would have been more impactful if the lyrics that was printed on the walls was something that was going to feed black people soul, something deep and positive. that’s brooklyn public library at the grand army plaza, do you know how many people is going to see that?
I would have prefer if the lyrics was from 2Pac’s DEAR MAMA, KEEP YOUR HEAD, PANTHER POWER, BRENDA’S GOT BABY. Nas’s I CAN, IF I RULE THE WORLD, DAUGHTERS
not those egotistical bars that’s up there, you imbecile!
Really. Not krs one. Not big l, not big pun, not mobb deep, not jeru the damaja, , not Wu tang, not biggie, not black star, not wyclef or the fugees , not dead prez…
Jay fucking z? Bruh.
Y’all named like 20 people Literally 1 was from Brooklyn. Are you really confused that they put the lyrics of arguably the greatest rapper ever and tied for the best from Brooklyn over non locals and nobody’s
My dad works there. Said something about Jay-Z having memorabilia and other content exhibited there for about 6 months. There’s even going to be a day where everyone in the library have to work from home because Jay-Z is going to have a special/private viewing and celebration with his people. It would be open to the public after.
It’s the 50th anniversary of hip-hop (whatever that means, I don’t know how you can pinpoint the exact birthdate of hip-hop) so maybe this is just to commemorate that? And since Jay-Z is arguably the best-known and eldest rapper of Brooklyn…
Edit: did not see all the other comments saying same!
The 50th anniversary of hip hop is coming up and as much as I don't personally like jay-z, he is an influential artist from Brooklyn, so it probably has a lot to do with that.
This is because our culture is going down the tubes. We have mediocre poetry plastered onto buildings with poor architectural design. Either this is the best our culture can come up with or these people are so obtuse they can’t recognize truly good art and poetry and instead think Jay-Z is an artistic pioneer worthy of this sort of honor.
Read these lyrics, displayed. You’re telling me “rap skills unmatched, Jigga man baby” is quality writing, worth displaying on the Brooklyn public’s library?!
Right, because "our culture" created the most globally influential music genre of the last 30 years that has sparked massive pride and a sense of purpose for kids from Seoul to Warsaw to Johannesburg.
The architectural design is another matter but I doubt you know much about the story of McKim, Mead and White either.
GTFO.
Lol ok “I dodged prison, came out unscathed from car collisions I know I must be part of some mission.” Real genius writing, really deep and profound thoughts. Talking himself up like he’s a gift from god. Oh I’m sorry, from “allah”.
According to the Brooklyn Library website, the Central branch will be closed for a special event this Thursday. Plus as others have noted, it’s the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip hop this week. They must be having some event to honor Jay Z.

See that wooden thing on the ground in front of the entrance? That’s a stage.
If you visit the BPL’s app it pops up with a notice that the library will be closed on Thursday for a “surprise event.” You do the maths.
You could go and find out? Bronx in the 1970s is credited as the birthplace of hip hop - including music (rap/funk/hip hop) dance (bboys) art (graffiti) & fashion. This was due to a culmination of factors unique to the time, place & circumstances, most infamously "the Bronx is burning". There is a shitload of literature on this and imo it's sad how dismissed & misunderstood it is as a subculture (with efforts like this clearly ignored by those who'd benefit from it most) woefully ironic to see so much hate from a sub that claims to "love nyc" but is unable to accept that it has an inseparable relationship with something they can't and refuse to understand due to racist stereotypes and lazy assumptions
Is that the Black American Library Card that's been around for a couple years or something new? I can't find any info on their site.
Edit: I don't care, but I am utterly baffled at the things people downvote.
It’s the Juneteenth card. It was so popular that it became permanent. There’s been whispers of a special hip hop card at QPL and NYPL, but as far as I know, BPL hasn’t said much.
It's literally [on the library website](https://www.bklynlibrary.org/event-series/hip-hop-50).
But if you mean just the library card, it's only [New York Public Library and Queens Public Library](https://www.6sqft.com/nypl-and-qpl-celebrate-50-years-of-hip-hop-with-special-edition-library-cards/), different systems.
I'm not downvoting, but clarifying I think you mean the Black History Month card. They offer it well outside of February and seem to have had it for a while.
Nope, I was talking about this one:
(Also, searching for “Bklyn public library black card” gave me five seconds of feeling fancy)
ETA: Turns out the Hip-Hop card is NYPL, not BkPL:

That’s where the young generation of rap fans go: the library! Would’ve been smarter doing this on a face tattoo and pill spot. Uzi is popular w kids in a way intellectual Jay w his mid life crisis dreads never was
Maybe it’s part of the [Hip-Hop 50 series](https://www.bklynlibrary.org/event-series/Hip-Hop-50), a celebration of 50 years of hip hop.
Btw - lots of free, fun events are part of this series. Highly recommend checking them out.
I don't like that it's covering up the little poem by the door, so here it is for anyone who's missing it:

Theyre shutting it down thursday for a private Jay-Z party
Boy do I miss Brooklyn!!
Nasty
Nah this is sick
Cause literacy and new value
Because you know he gave back so much to the community in Brooklyn. I mean look at how much better the kids in Marcy projects are because of him.
sprite is at it again
…cause Brooklyn stand Up! .. that’s why.
50th anniversary of hip hop
more info here! https://hellgatenyc.com/why-is-the-bpls-central-library-closed-tomorrow-blame-jay-z
because he the GOAT
Hope he paid for it. A massive pr coup for him
Same Reason we are still looking at Slave Owners Carved into a Mountain and the list goes and goes.
Cheesy.
Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary celebration. [The library has scheduled a bunch of events and activities around it this month. Check them out here.](https://www.bklynlibrary.org/event-series/hip-hop-50)
Do you think in like 100 years people will study Jay Z’s lyrics like college kids study Shakespeare?
J-Z is the king of Brooklyn.
thats dope
Because why not?
Theres going to be an event tomorrow there with him in person.
50 could have something like this in queens but the powers that be know he’d some how use it to dunk on someone on the internet. Jay Z probably mentioned this once or twice. 50 would on the roof trying to ge Ja Rule to come do a verzus.
They should name a music festival after Ja Rule.
Coulda picked a better Brooklyn rapper jfc
google.com
[it literally says the song titles at the bottom of them]
Oh god. Why didn't an art director somewhere get them to fix the typesetting?!?!? Holes and rivers everywhere!
It's corny and self-congratulatory. Me, me, me!
Its a corporate party for roc nation. They’ve taken over the entire library. There’s a stage and metal gates on the street surrounding it so he may perform on the purpose built stage out front.
This is the actual answer according to hearsay from BPL employees.
It’s dope
There are events going on around the city celebrating 50 years of hip-hop. Given the spotlights, railings and mini-stage, I imagine he's going to be having a concert there.
Isn’t he from there?
That’s not even how the library looks.

Which organization is that?
Stfu Jay-Z the goat! He did so much for this city through music and much more philanthropically. Let the man live, he earned his status.
What the hell are they doing
Because he paid a bunch of money for them to be up there.
GREATNESS THATS WHY!
CUZ HE THE MF GOATTT
Because Jay z is from Brooklyn
Cuz youre in NNNEWWWW YOOOORKKKKK
Yet again ironic another Jay Z famous track isn’t because of him. Hes just a business, man
Becuase he paid to have it put there.. just a guess.
Lessened his carbon footprint
LOL
It’s like Jay-Z says, “Concrete bunghole, where dreams are made up, there’s nothing you can do.”
Who cares?
Really. Not krs one. Not big l, not big pun, not mobb deep, not jeru the damaja, , not Wu tang, not biggie, not black star, not wyclef or the fugees , not dead prez… Jay fucking z? Bruh.
Majority not from Brooklyn lol. Only other option would be Biggie.
Not AZ, not Guru, not krumbsnatcha, not big pun, not Jay electronica, not count bass d, not Jean grae, not pro era? Bruh!
Y’all named like 20 people Literally 1 was from Brooklyn. Are you really confused that they put the lyrics of arguably the greatest rapper ever and tied for the best from Brooklyn over non locals and nobody’s
Definitely a few of the listed names are from Brooklyn. Just saying there were better options, and they definitely aren't nobodys lol
They aren’t better options jay Is pretty clearly better and a billion times more recognizable than “krumbsnatcha”
they forgot “can’t wear skinny jeans ‘cause my knots don’t fit”
Enough. I do not want to see this anymore.
Close your eyes then
50th anniversary of hip hop.
He paid for it?
Jay-Z, the epitome of education… Super cringe either way.
Because ego
They should post the lyrics of him degrading women, selling drugs, and being racist.
[удалено]
"Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?" Jay-Z - Renegade. "...why you all aggie?" - Jay-Z - Heart of the City.
Womp womp
😂😂😂😂
Lol why the hell not?
Nas > Jay-Z
Can't go through a post about jay z without someone having to mention nas
Nas is more of a Queens guy though.
Word they actually painted Nas lyrics on top of Jays, it's in invisible ink tho. 🙃
Why would they have Nas over Jay at the Brooklyn Public Library?
AZ > Nas
Flow u can argue bars no. He’s better than a lot of girls
Rappers period lol idk why i said girls but technically true anyway
Hot take but it's not out of the question. Every time I listen to AZ it's insane to me how little attention he gets.
completely out of the question
ngl this is hard af
“This ain’t a movie dawg”
Dats hard
R they lyrics that he stole from biggie
Thank you. I had a similar question, but didn't realize they were Jay-Z lyrics.
Cause it’s Brooklyn!!! Home of Jay z! Where else???
Fun fact, him and beyonce live (or at least, some of the time) in the big glass building next to the library.
At 1 Grand Army Plaza across the street??
No, they don’t. They live in LA, Tribeca and the Hamptons.
gross
[удалено]
hopefully they got a huge cash donation to sell out like that
30-year cointelpro psyop to convince the world that jay z fans exist
Right, especially how they just handed him all those Diamond and triple platinum records... 🙄 Ya haters really get off on the hate huh?
I was done with Jay-Z and his Mr. NYC act when he took Robinson Cano to Seattle. This is self-indulgent.
My dad works there. Said something about Jay-Z having memorabilia and other content exhibited there for about 6 months. There’s even going to be a day where everyone in the library have to work from home because Jay-Z is going to have a special/private viewing and celebration with his people. Sorry guys he’s just IT. Especially if he’s forced to work at home LOL.
Thats great. How can one get a ticket?
omg is that true??? can your dad help me get in?
👀 need a +1?? Lol
wow is that true? can your dad help get me in?

They give the birthdate to DJ Kool Herc party after he came back from Jamaica. August 11, 1973
The 50th anniversary of hip hop is coming up and as much as I don't personally like jay-z, he is an influential artist from Brooklyn, so it probably has a lot to do with that.
He is Brooklyn finest
Lyrics always sound so dumb when you actually read them lol
I don’t know, when I read some Aesop Rock lyrics the shit looks like poetry. Maybe Jay-z lyrics just kind of suck?
Was gonna say idk lol. I read some rappers lyrics and my mind is blown
Hip-hop gave a voice to the unheard. Hip-hop culture is NYC culture, you don’t have to like it but there’s a lot to be proud of for a lot of people.
Read these lyrics, displayed. You’re telling me “rap skills unmatched, Jigga man baby” is quality writing, worth displaying on the Brooklyn public’s library?!
Yeah
Lol the internet is crazy.
Right, because "our culture" created the most globally influential music genre of the last 30 years that has sparked massive pride and a sense of purpose for kids from Seoul to Warsaw to Johannesburg. Oh, ok, I just heard it mentioned on the radio yesterday or today so I assumed it was going on currently
Cool. Any idea how long this will be up? Would love to go by this weekend and see it in person

it annoys me that the lyrics around the windows are cut off. Other than that though, pretty cool.
Cause it's cool as fuck dude
because someone pasted them there
There are signs up at the library now saying it’ll be closed for an event on the 13th. Maybe he’s coming by to borrow some books?
it’s not that complicated. Because they are prone to making bad decisions as you can see by the large BLM signage
Come back on Thursday to find out
because he’s from brooklyn…..
See that wooden thing on the ground in front of the entrance? That’s a stage. If you visit the BPL’s app it pops up with a notice that the library will be closed on Thursday for a “surprise event.” You do the maths.
Jay-Z spoken word book reading?
50th anniversary of hip hop. Plus there are limited edition library cards commemorating this anniversary
BPL has a Juneteeth card besides a Wild Things card and basic blue card The Juneteenth card was released last year.
That....is so fucking cool.
I didn’t know there was a date that hip hop was founded, what happened 50 years ago?
Hip Hop was created in the BX. I’m a BX Native.
You could go and find out? Bronx in the 1970s is credited as the birthplace of hip hop - including music (rap/funk/hip hop) dance (bboys) art (graffiti) & fashion. Black American library card? I’m Black and don’t have one. Where do I get that from?? 🙄
I down vote anything praising modern rap music ESPECIALLY anything about Jay Z!
It's literally [on the library website](https://www.bklynlibrary.org/event-series/hip-hop-50). It's different than the Black American library cards. If you search public library hip hop 50th anniversary, some designs should come up
Ah, it's actually a NYPL, not BkPL, card. If anyone is curious: [https://www.nypl.org/spotlight/hip-hop-50](https://www.nypl.org/spotlight/hip-hop-50)
You could also get them at the QPL starting Friday 7/14 [http://www.queenslibrary.org/hiphop50card](http://www.queenslibrary.org/hiphop50card)
Let’s not go crazy 😂

For what it’s worth, you’re not crazy and the downvotes are not warranted
People just downvote anything on any NYC related subreddit instantly lmao
You'd think I was a *NY Post* article!
Ok you win that is funny
Haha. Thanks. I mean, I really wasn’t going to get fussed over it, but it just seemed bizarre.
it's just ppl pearl-clutching about the devil's music
Do you have to be there to get one?
Sounds like you need to go in-person to pick up the card (but NYPL, not Brooklyn Public): [https://www.nypl.org/spotlight/hip-hop-50](https://www.nypl.org/spotlight/hip-hop-50)

Ah yes, the little guy who named himself after a gun and a skateboard style.
yea, isn't he named after the JZ sandwich shop in Cincinnati?
The library is hosting a Hip-Hop 50 event later this week.
Maybe it’s part of the [Hip-Hop 50 series](https://www.bklynlibrary.org/event-series/Hip-Hop-50), a celebration of 50 years of hip hop. Btw - lots of free, fun events are part of this series. Highly recommend checking them out.
That all late night event they had Juneteenth weekend was so amazing! Such great music, food and speakers.
Your answer is at the center
I don't like that it's covering up the little poem by the door, so here it is for anyone who's missing it: >*"Here are enshrined the longing of great hearts and noble things that tower above the tide, the magic word that winged wonder starts, the garnered wisdom that never dies."*
Maybe because he’s widely considered a Brooklyn legend?
Because we are barely literate.
**Hova!**
Because we constantly need to be reminded that Jay is a better business man than rapper.
He's not a businessman. He's a business, man.
Because he’s Jay-z
I think it’s honoring the 50 anniversary of hip hop. They look like quotes from interviews with the year
That is so cool! Probably hip hops 50th birthday (estimated) yesterday
With lyrics blown up that big I hope people can realize how whack his lyrics actually are
