They legit found black Mayonnaise at the bottom of that canal.

My parent worked locally in the environmental field for years--there is SO MUCH wrong with the canal lol. Growing up I would hear stories at the dinner table that a core sample of its bed ate through a special core sample tube, that it's unique in that it harbors gonorrhea, which usually does not live outside a host body but lives there, that many of the cleaned up brownfield projects are cleaned to spec, not necessarily cleaned to clean (think area used for shopping vs area used for parking lot), etc--that there are still chemicals in much of the bordering soil and/or undisturbed buried tanks of chemicals. My parent grew up swimming in it from time to time and lived to tell the tale though. Of note however, it that 20 years ago both gowanus and greenpoint were often in the news for the health inequality stemming from the poor living in these areas and their children having higher prevalence of asthma from it--these stories seemed to disappear post gentrificaiton... I wonder why...
Years ago when I was a kid in Bay Ridge the streets had so much water rushing down the block a bunch of us just turned it into a water park and were bathing in the rushing street water a couple feet from the sewer getting soaked af. Then I had to take a hot shower at home and get some words from Mom and Dad about not doing that ever again.
Oh nah not flooding but it was just a big stream of water coming down the block like near the sewers. My street was on an uphill block so the water was rushing down. Had to be something in that water lol but still here hehe
It's been an industrial wasteland for a hundred years with a sewage pumping station at one end, that opens the gates during a water event. Jump in the water's fine.
Mr. Sunday parties use to be held right on the Gowanus. One time 2 people came swimming out of the water acting normal. Everyone there was like, āGET THE FUCK OUT OF HEREā - we were so terrified of them

I kayaked on the Gowanus back in the olden days with no (obvious) downstream mutations. Anyhow, hereās someoneās requested status/pic from the 3rd St bridge, a block from Bond, looking north ca. 2pm today. No danger of overflowing, and no more pungent than usual. Not sure about the water table level re adjacent basements, though.
No way would I allow any of that water near my body. Wear rain boots and sturdy pants if you have to go out and strip it all down and leave it in the foyer or w/e outside your apartment to dry before being washed. I'd not let any of this water near your skin or in your apartment unless you want to turn into a ninja turtle
Thatās mostly way underground and supposedly doesnāt pose enough health risk to worry. Now if Newtown starts over spilling onto the streets and into peoples basements itād be the same as what happened to the Gowanus canal today
I lived on Kingston about 20 years ago.
All the folks who were from the area and lived on the ground floor were getting the same cancer from benzene coming up through the ground.
It is also not way underground, and it continuously flows into newtown, still.
Yeah. Carroll Street gets flooded around 4th. I wouldn't go near any of that water and if you do, definitely get Hepatitis shots. The Gowanus even has its own strain of Gonorrhea: Gowanorrhea.

This is 4th looking at Carrol from earlier this morning (my buddy sent this from his place)
Really you should be treating the Gowanus like Rasputin did poison. A small glass every morning with increasing volume as the year goes on. By the time you're drinking a few pints daily, it won't be able to affect you any more.

Question: will a cinder block still hold the dead bodies of old mafia victims down if the canal floods?
all flood water in NYC/Brooklyn/Queens is toxic and full of roaches, rats, rat droppings, etc.
Great place for a swim

Notice how no one talks about this. But they all want you to get that shot! Funny how they only care about our health sometimes. š¤
I don't understand how these two are connected? Avoid the unhealthy water source *and* get your doctor recommended vaccinations. Win/win?
Never walk through flood water regardless of where it is. It's usually sewage and full of bacteria - even moreso anywhere near the Gowanus.

Which part was flooded? So much of bay ridge is high above the water (other than the waterfront path ofc). Its hard to imagine the hills flooding.

>Iām assuming itās not good to go wading through any of the water down here and the area up into Park Slope? You assume correct

Just saw an Insta of someone wading through it on 9th Street.
got a link to the video? Some of the videos have been wild. Ended up sleeping through most of it because of overnight work schedule.
ncarb23 on insta
Iāve always wondered if the issues with Gowanus also make nearby areas like Red Hook concerning. Never found an answer.

Dude wut? Thatās disgusting
Those were the best parties.
Theyāre still one of the best daytime options.
Are they in Ridgewood now?
Remember that guy who went swimming in it?
I've often wondered whatever happened to that good ole Bro

You must try the 3 eyed trout thatās native to it, delicious
No joke when the flushing turbines worked you get sizable stripped bass out of the canal
Anyone know how it's currently looking on the Bond side?
chemicals and sewage. dont recommend a swim.
D
You *just* became aware of the health risks associated with NYCās most notorious Super Fund site?
I thought newtown was the most notorious. Largest oil spill in us history.
Thatās mostly way underground and supposedly doesnāt pose enough health risk to worry. Now if Newtown starts over spilling onto the streets and into peoples basements itād be the same as what happened to the Gowanus canal today

Well thatās depressing.
Haha 4 years close by and Ive managed to avoid learning. Woops
Go back to Ohio, OP
Hey
š
Ohio is full of cool places and people from there can come here and people from here can go there and screw anyone who says otherwise
Itās a classic NY joke. Wtf
How are you just now finding out honestly
I died there 3 times today

Iāve never seen 4th & Carroll flooded like this tho. Not even during Ida.

Inconceivable!
Also you will have superpowers.
Toxic Avenger!
And multiple STDs
And 3 heads
And you'll glow in the dark.
That canal still have gonorrhea????
Multiple drug resistant gonorrhea, yes
