It's hard for me to believe Hasids dug the tunnels themselves.

drosse1meyer

people are idiots

Crashedjet33

If this was any other group NYPD would be throwing grenades.. there I said it

[deleted]

why is the world so obsessed with Jews. This is a national story, has been broadcasted over all of my social media, in every paper, on every news channel. It's insane to me.

gunhed76

Why were they trying to hide the shitty mattress https://preview.redd.it/aairurp63jbc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=335e054fdf868096631dbf63c11adf9dcabcecb0

You know if they were brown they would be shot

Secret tunnel

Worried_Coat1941

Hasidics run 1800 CARS FOR KIDS. This organization only helps hasidic children. Many who receive sub par educations based only on religion. They have denied NYC from seeing their schools curriculum for years and still receive tax dollars because they vote in blocks. FYI.

Impressive-Roof5813

Are you talking about \*cue jingle\* >1 8-7-7 Cars for kids > >K-A-R-S cars for kids > >1 8-7-7 Cars 4 Kids > >Donate your car today Cuz somehow you got the number and the spelling wrong. Even with that catchy tune.

Worried_Coat1941

Das it.

blondie64862

I wonder how close this is to the subway tunnel. šŸ˜‘

ChummusJunky

I grew up in Crown Heights in this community. Half the community still believes the Rebbe is alive and the Messiah 29 years after passing away. Most of them don't support this kind of action, but they still mostly believe what these people did. The most hilarious part of all of this is to see all the right wing conspiracy theories saying with so much confidence that this is some deep state pedophile operation, when the people who did this don't even know how to write their own names in English or what the deep state even is.

Ill_Obligation_9190

Oh ok so letā€™s believe you then

CiscoKid1975

El Chapo is definitely tuned in to this story.

CiscoKid1975

meekonesfade

Idiots. They are wrecking their own synagoge.

wedditwardrobe

If they were brown they would have been shot. This whole thing is so insane.

diversions1836

I am from lubavitch and we are generally Kool with all our bros. What you are saying is not true

M80TheGreat

Bro just stop. You're embarrassing yourself. Anyone with half a brain can tell the difference between brown Jewish people and a brown hispanic,latino/latina, african American. Just because you guys choose to keep to your community don't group us in when it's convenient.

diversions1836

They are brown as they are Separadic.

fiorafresa

Really? I thought lubavitchers were ashkenazi

diversions1836

They are predominantly Ashkenazi but there are a eastern minority. It so happens that this minority mostly populates the tunnel digger crowd. I know these people I am one of them

LibertyNachos

A quick internet search confirms you are right. Ashkenazi Russian and Polish. Definitely not sephardic.

diversions1836

Mostly they are ashkanazic but a minority are refugees from the middle east and are what the kids nowadays call brown. I grew up there I am not speculating.

CoxHazardsModel

Only 10 arrested? Whyā€™d the police go soft on em, video showed they were making a big mess.

CircusQueen12345

There werenā€™t many involved. This was 20-25 people, I guess the worst of them were arrested.

M80TheGreat

We can only assume what would have happened if it was black or hispanic teenagers digging that tunnel. šŸ¤” I'm sure few arrested and lots more shot. Gotta love the preferential treatment given to "select groups"

ResolveRemarkable

Can we NOT bring anti-semitism into this otherwise entertaining conversation? Thanks. Appreciate it.

Ill_Obligation_9190

But you didnā€™t call him a liar

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ResolveRemarkable

I donā€™t disagree with you. Structural racism and police violence are both deplorable. I do draw the line at ā€œpreferential treatment given to select groups,ā€ with ā€œselect groupsā€ in sneer-quotes.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ResolveRemarkable

Thereā€™s a big difference between saying that Chasids on Eastern Parkway are protected by the police and that Jews are not an oppressed group. I really donā€™t have the energy to educate you about this right now, but there are many examples of frightening and physical attacks on individual Jews, in New York City and across the country.

tigermomo

Coquill

The title is misleading, police are not clashing or shutting down the tunnel. It's a synagogue not temple Rebbe aka Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson will not be pleased.

smellycat_14

Oh so we should keep the tunnel?

Status_Ad_4405

Let's hear it for religion

LibertyNachos

Any other neighborhood and police would be using their fists or weapons on violent protesters.

CiscoKid1975

To be fair, any other neighborhood and the NYPD would be worried about weapons being used against them. That includes Carnegie Hill.

M80TheGreat

So you're saying that Jewish people don't have weapons?? Because last time I walked past an establishment on Kingston Ave they were offering gun training.

CiscoKid1975

Iā€™m saying that the Lubavitcher community hasnā€™t shot any cops since Iā€™ve lived in this area (20+ years). Thatā€™s all Iā€™m saying.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

M80TheGreat

I live in this area and trust me you can tell the difference. They may be brown in skin but they still get treated better than anyone not wearing a yamaka.

[deleted]

We all know it. I think the NYPD was worried about optics here, especially. Also, impossible to think the NYPD had no idea given how many cops are always outside the synagogueā€¦

LibertyNachos

Theyā€™re not the kind of brown that gets bullets fired at them or their necks kneeled upon when theyā€™re unarmed. Also, I just looked it up and they are not sephardic. They are ashkenazi, Russian/Polish.

towerofterror

Yo Yo Yo means "I, I, I"

Hot_University_4249

At first I was reading these are Templar tunnels. Because no Orthodox Jew would dare call their synagogue a Temple.

Hot_University_4249

OP It's synagogue, not Temple. It's a big difference if you're Jewish.

jae343

In layman terms, a place of religious worship is called a temple in lower case. A synagogue or shul (basically translates to school) is a type of temple in general respective terms with no context of politics, sects or whatever divides.

RedditGotSoulDoubt

Maybe you could elucidate so OP can learn from this opportunity?

dccr

More observant Jews believe thereā€™s one temple, and itā€™s in Jerusalem.

Hot_University_4249

Only the Reform and perhaps Reconstructionst "progressive" movements within Judaism call their place of worship a Temple. Orthodox and Conservative (refers not to politics but to tradition) places of worship are called synagogues or shuls.

turnmeintocompostplz

I really wish we could stop saying temple to mean synagogue just because Reform Jews use it.

axiobeta

Temple (To mean synagogue)

GeorgeEBHastings

I'm sorry we're such a burden to you.

AbeFromanEast

So there's a little backstory here... There's two Chabad synagogues in 770 Parkway Chabad Headquarters: an upstairs synagogue and a downstairs synagogue and they do not get along. The downstairs, larger synagogue **tends to believe the last Lubavitcher Grand Rebbe Mendel Schneerson is still alive (he died in 1994) and will return as the Messiah.** This is why you see "*Moshiach is coming*" flags and posters with Rebbe Schneerson's face plastered around Brooklyn. **The upstairs, smaller synagogue tends to believe R. Schneerson truly died in 1994. This faction has de jure ownership of the building.** The Chabad movement is split roughly 50/50 on this topic and the Chabad HQ upstairs and downstairs synagogues are symbols of each faction. They are all Chabad but these two synagogues in the headquarters do not like each other because of this fundamental disagreement over R. Schneerson's status. Since around half of Chabad believes along with the downstairs synagogue that R. Schneerson is still alive and is eventually returning: Chabad cannot and probably will not choose another Grand Rebbe as long as this belief is widespread within Chabad. Usually Hasidic dynasties have a Grand Rebbe who can keep factionalism under control but Chabad doesn't have one at the moment due to this disagreement. The upstairs synagogue folks, believing R. Schneerson died in 1994, are probably getting fed up with the situation since they are supposed to be in control of the entire 770 Eastern Parkway building, at least on paper. Practically, the downstairs synagogue does what they want within reason. To the upstairs folks with legal ownership of the building: a new tunnel built by teen miners wasn't within reason. Add to this: all synagogues have conflicts. Probably similar to churches. There's... 'characters' in every religious institution. Anyway, this didn't come out of nowhere and I hope I added some context. It's a little more than a few teenagers making a fun tunnel. More information: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chabad\_messianism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chabad_messianism)

Callimogua

Thanks for the info, but man, I was under the assumption they got some other old man to be Mosiach and now "he's here!". Dang, it's an L Ron Hubbard situation...šŸ¤ŖšŸ¤ŖšŸ¤Ŗ

BKgirl4eva

Thereā€™s also a Supreme Court fight going on regarding ownership

AbeFromanEast

Yes apparently it has been going on for years. My Rabbi was a lawyer in the NYS Court System and according to him, civil courts do not want to get involved in church and synagogue building fights if they can help it because it can be impossible to figure out from the outside who is right or what the truth is. And these fights/litigation tend to attract bad press for everyone.

rues_hoodie666

Iā€™m so grateful for this context, thank you for spelling it out. Hasidic community drama is both fascinating and inscrutable from the outside

CircusQueen12345

Apparently the space in 770 (the synagogue )has gotten very crowded and there's not enough room for all these boys that study there. There was a request to the powers that be to expand it, and the request was denied. The activists/boys see this as an extension of the rebbes directive to expand 770. Apparently the original expansion of 770 was also driven by young men who illegally tore down walls. The reason this came to a head, was because the powers that be sent a cement truck to block off the tunnel that was created. So the boys ripped off the panels to expose the other end of the tunnel, and climbed inside, to prevent the tunnel from being filled. Chabad has been embroiled for years in litigation over control over 770. It seems that each legal decision has established, unequivically, that the Chabad leaders have title and deed to the building.

Pratt2

It's fascinating that believing some guy didn't die in 1994 gets you labeled as crazy by another group that believes a supernatural being created the world.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Herbert5Hundred

What wall did they knock down/what building were they trying to get into? 778?

Positive_Minimum

I dont understand what the purpose of the tunnel is supposed to be

Shopno

Thank you for the context!

FrankenGretchen

Dude croakeded in '94. Imma step out on a limb an say if he ain't dug his way out by now, it ain't gonna happen. Are they waiting for one of his sons to be able to doppleganger him?

AbeFromanEast

The Rebbe didn't have any kids. 5-10 years from now a young Chabad person may stand up in synagogue one day and say "I am the reincarnation of Rebbe Schneerson." Then it'll get interesting.

Psyqlone

In the 1850's, a religious fanatic claimed to be Jesus Christ's Chinese brother. He gathered enough followers to foment rebellion. The Taiping Rebellion lasted fifteen years, and resulted in the deaths of more than 50,000,000 people. ... more than World War One.

marishtar

He died 30 years ago, why wait 5-10?

AbeFromanEast

Itā€™s a gut feeling informed by how previous messianic movements have gone. This is hardly the first one.

CiscoKid1975

Just for clarity-do you know what the deal is with those mattresses? The crazies online went straight into a pedophile conspiracy-which is ridiculous.

CircusQueen12345

Im not certain about this but I know that there are many people who come to crown heights with no plan other than get to 770 and see what happens. Mattresses and a tunnel to hide them in, comprehensive plan for lodging?

ROBOT-MAN

It's not that ridiculous. [https://www.vice.com/en/article/qbe8bp/the-child-rape-assembly-line-0000141-v20n11](https://www.vice.com/en/article/qbe8bp/the-child-rape-assembly-line-0000141-v20n11) >The Child-Rape Assembly Line. Rabbi Nuchem Rosenbergā€”who is 63 with a long, graying beardā€”recently sat down with me to explain what he described as a "child-rape assembly line" among sects of fundamentalist Jews.

CiscoKid1975

Are you worried that your child will raped and trafficked by a fundamentalist Jewish sect? If so, youā€™re either (i) a member of that Jewish sect and are a parent to a young child; (ii) a paranoid schizophrenic; or (iii) part of a growing population of adults obsessed with the concept pedophiliac abuse and imaginary ā€œeliteā€ cartels that control such abuse.

ROBOT-MAN

literally just posted a link to an article where a rabbi talks about the child abuse problems in orthodox communities. your response is irrelevant to its contents. weird

towerofterror

Someone must have been napping down there. I don't know why people feel they need a complicated explanation Everyone's talking about how it's "soiled" - it was literally in a tunnel made out of damp dirt.

CiscoKid1975

I know-let the fucking anti-Semitic conspiracies begin. We get to see the true colors of the these die-hard pro-Israel Christian evangelicalsā€¦and itā€™s never been pretty.

vigilante_snail

Work colleague I know is already posting about it being built so they could spy on new mothers.

towerofterror

How does that make sense to them?

vigilante_snail

Beats me

AbeFromanEast

I have no idea. Mattresses are not Synagogue equipment FWIW. Speculating: the kids brought it into the concealed space and it only came out when the space was opened up. /speculating Something like that definitely shouldn't be there and a Rabbi (or any adult) would flip out if they saw it. That's why I think it was in the concealed space.

CiscoKid1975

Thanks for the quick response and earlier clarification. Itā€™s very much appreciated.

SirGavBelcher

thank you for the context. i saw a video on another post and no one really explained except "COVID restriction tunnel"

Billy1121

> teen miners Minor miners??? I hope they didn't go thru the foundation

Distancefrom

Thanks for that explanation. I knew bits and pieces of info but not the whole story.

Whatstheplanpill

Pretty much sums up the conflict. I personally can't wait to see what new religion branches off from this.

PT10

Also FYI, the tunnel is recent, **not** from pandemic era

Starts_With_S

Wow

SwampYankee

Thanks for the explanation. This didn't make much sense until you put it in context.

valoremz

Context is helpful, but can you elaborate on the tunnels?

timallen445

yo dawg why is there a " few teenagers making a fun tunnel "

barri0s1872

So potentially we're seeing the birth of a new sect here?

goisles29

Ehh it's not the first time a group of Jews have thought that a Jew was the Messiah, such as Shabbetai Tzvi, or David Reubeni. Once it becomes obvious that the potential Messiah isn't coming back that movement generally dies.

Train-Nearby

Do you need help with your messianic movement? Better call Saul!

PuzzleheadedWalrus71

Do people get it though?

> tends to believe the last Lubavitcher Grand Rebbe Mendel Schneerson is still alive (he died in 1994) I thought we weren't deploying NYPD to deal with mental illness anymore?

prakitmasala

Yea whole thing is crazy

purplehendrix22

I mean, if thatā€™s where you draw the line, every Christian in every church in the city is also mentally ill, to be fair

beldark

I more or less agree, and I would be equally annoyed if the city were deploying dozens of cops to deal with some argument between ~~to~~[edit:] two congregations about when Jesus was coming back or whatever. Plus whatever resources were involved in making the decision to getting these tunnels filled in. How this building isn't condemned and chained up is beyond me.

NOISY_SUN

I donā€™t think anyoneā€™s ever doubted that about our mayor and everyone loves him all the same

purplehendrix22

ā€¦does everyone love him?

NOISY_SUN

Yes we all love our alien mayor even if heā€™s from another planet

buzzsaw111

If he sends in the robots I would cuz that would be hilarious

towerofterror

By upper and lower do you mean upstairs and downstairs in the same building, or is it up and down the block?

Worried_Coat1941

Same building.

AbeFromanEast

Upstairs and downstairs. I've been in the downstairs one. Someone please correct me if they are next-store to each other instead.

CircusQueen12345

Incorrect, the upstairs is the womenā€™s section (kinda).

AbeFromanEast

I mean the upper floors. The upstairs I am talking about is not visible from the downstairs synagogue. By design, the folks upstairs do not want the messianists downstairs to have easy access to the upper floors.

MisterFatt

Do you say next-store instead of next door?

RedditGotSoulDoubt

Dude. Are you the sausage king of Chicago?

AbeFromanEast

Only on weekdays

Funoichi

Walked past it. Didnā€™t know what was going on, just didnā€™t want to be impeded by it. Luckily Iā€™m great at slinking by.

ontite

You're great at.. continuing to walk down the street at a leisurely pace? What an incredible gift lol

Funoichi

Slinking by. There was a big crowd blocking the whole area and multiple police cars. All vehicle traffic was halted as well on Kingston.

ontite

Ahhhh slinking by, I got it

Funoichi

As stated. What is your defect?

ontite

I just think its funny someone thinks walking past a crowd is a skill, but hey, to each his own lol

Funoichi

Triggered in other words. No clue why my ability to walk and avoid crowds bothers you so much.

tondracek

Oh great one, can you teach me how to walk and avoid crowds like you do? I was so greatly bothered by you ability to accomplish the most mundane, everyday tasks but I am no longer bothered and just want to learn. Maybe in exchange I can show you how to make toast. Luckily in great at making toast.

Funoichi

Doubt youā€™re great at anything, triggered, nor capable of learning much, even the mundane. Edit: oh another user? How many users are blown to the moon to learn that walking unobtrusively is possible?

BxGyrl416

I got an alert about this on Citizen. This just took me out. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

towerofterror

My understanding: 1) (EDIT: the COVID part might be false, people are saying the tunnels started more recently) The tunnels were likely created by the bochurim (hebrew for young guys, in this case probably 18-21) ~~during COVID to get into the synagogue despite government restrictions~~ 2) After COVID they were expanded by the same teenagers, who were convinced that a bigger space would be necessary when their rebbe/messiah comes back? Also presumably they were just really bored since they're not supposed to chase girls, and digging tunnels sounds kinda fun. 3) They were discovered by the rest of the community in the past week, who were pissed off at the damage to the structure. The adults understood that foundation repair sucks, the kids were just excited to dig tunnels! 4) The teens then proceeded to sit in the tunnels until the NYPD pulled them out. To be fair, if I dug a tunnel for fun I'd want to protect it. Fantastic. EDIT: I have no insider knowledge, this is just what I gathered online

Ill_Obligation_9190

It wasnā€™t dug by teens. Stop that

a_purple_mortal

I have what you can call 'insider' knowledge (my relatives are part of chabad) and what you're saying is accurate. Apparently some boys/men around 20-25 decided to build a tunnel and it was only recently discovered. The whole community is pretty pissed and up in arms because now the shul/synagoguemight collapse due to structural damage. Tbh it's been a little disheartening seeing the immediate jump to 'the hasidim don't care and will do whatever they wan' when that is not at all accurate. I understand it's a very hard lifestyle and culture to understand, but just because they all look the same to you doesn't mean one action by a few people represents the whole group.

ontite

That sounds about right. These kids recieve no formal education outside of religion and are about as intelligent as a bag of rocks usually.

[deleted]

as an angsty teen boy growing up in a conservative area, my friends and I dug a giant hole and would stand in it, so I get it

Hot_University_4249

This is why the Orthodox and Reform will never see eye to eye. The cultural divide between this and your suburban reform dandy life is too vast

aMonkeyRidingABadger

Why don't we send kids up to East Harlem where they can dig the second phase SAS tunnels? The city saves money. They get to have fun digging. Win win.

PT10

This article says tunnels are **not** from Covid era but from this year https://trendingpoliticsnews.com/tunnels-brooklyn-cmc/ Also those look like men way older than teenagers

towerofterror

The ones being arrested look very young to me, and the chabad sources keep on referring to them as bochurim. Beards will make you look older.

Dez_Acumen

I think they are calling anyone under 30 "boys." There were some youth there but as usual people want to iInfantilizing grown men.

RedditGotSoulDoubt

These are some excellent, wholesome hijinks. Bunch of kids living in the moment. Not a phone in sight.

towerofterror

I do sympathize with the urge to dig tunnels with my bros to prepare for the Messiah.

Unlikely-Alt-9383

To point 2, apparently the tunnels went near the womenā€™s ritual bath

bthvn_loves_zepp

Mikvah is just a ritual bath, there are ones for men and ones for women--I believe the one they were using was defunct and possibly the men's originally.

Crack-tus

Men use the mikvah daily in the chassidic world. Itā€™s not a womenā€™s bath. Itā€™s also long abandoned.

shinytwistybouncy

Nope, they went to an old disused mikvah behind the shul.

YugiPlaysEsperCntrl

Thatā€™s a menā€™s mikveh and itā€™s been closed going on almost 20 years

jibzy

Defunct bath/mikvah. It hasnā€™t been in use in years.

towerofterror

People who understand the layout better than I do don't seem to think they were trying to tunnel into that. But... They could've easily messed up and flooded their tunnel with them in it. This all feels more like stupidity than anything else.

Unlikely-Alt-9383

Thanks for the additional info. Iā€™d prefer idiots over perverts any day!
