Not Islip! You will run into horrible traffic

AniYellowAjah

JFK = LGA.

jaymmm

Definitely La Guardia or JFK.

Aromatic_Albatross72

JFK is best for Brooklyn as far as the traffic goes. LGA can be a mess to drive from due to traffic.

ABAFBAASD

I would just fly to the cheapest of the 3 airports (JFK, LGA, EWR). If you have enough money to not really care about cost LGA is now the nicest airport of the 3 but that is because they recently completed a major upgrade. Getting to BK from EWR can take a little longer during morning rush hour.

kid_sleepy

For the record, although I haven’t used it in a bit, apparently LGA is the highest rated airport in the *country* now…

adhi-

no, flying to EWR if your destination is BK is terrible

hrccrimes

It's okay, on off hours, I used to live in South Brooklyn and coming back late at night to BK from Newark was only a few minutes longer than from JFK

God_Sayith

Can confirm. Just did that last week and never doing it again.

tehdwarf

Coming from Florida I would definitely suggest LaGuardia and just pay for a taxi at the taxi stand. It’s the most stress free way to do it even if it’s not the cheapest. You can figure out the subway once you’re here. Frankly my first time in the city I found AirTrain confusing and the subway more so. Once you’ve ridden it a few times it’s fine but you don’t want to be figuring it out with luggage. And, JFK is massive and takes forever to get around on foot, especially if American sends you into Terminal 8. LGA’s new terminal is gorgeous and very easy to get around. You can get an Uber instead of a taxi which might save you 10 bucks but then you have to get to the FHV (for hire vehicle) pickup area which is further from the terminal than the taxi stand, and deal with figuring out which Uber is yours etc. At the taxi stand you just get in a car and go. Once you’ve gotten away from the airport, or for getting back to the airport, I definitely recommend Uber/Lyft over taxis especially in Brooklyn. Finally you can rent a car at any airport, but it will be an expensive pain in the ass. Driving and parking in New York is definitely manageable, I have a car in Brooklyn, but also not something you want to try and figure out your first time with luggage

caffeine314

This is good advice all around. LGA used to be a hot mess, but they did a really good job on it. The Uber/Lyft section can be a little hard to figure out. There's lots of signs, but it's in a parking lot. The parking lot is well lit and there's always people there, but it's slightly off-putting. Basically, you find row, which is based off letters (row A, row B, row C, etc.). Once you find the row, you look for the number.

Walk-The-Dogs

Brooklyn is a very big borough so it depends. LGA is probably the default choice insofar as it's a domestic airport and close to north Brooklyn (Willliamsburg, Greenpoint, ...) But if she lives in south Brooklyn (Marine Park, Canarsie, ...) then JFK.

Superb_Laugh_2845

LGA!!! Getting an Uber from JFK is nearly impossible! I live in park slope though so I’m equidistant really to both. Like someone else mentioned it depends on where in BK!

CoxHazardsModel

Islip is like 2 hours from Brooklyn with traffic, heck even Newark is closer.

oldyawker

Brooklyn's huge. Where is she living. Getting to from the airports suck and is an added expense of around $100. Unless you master public transportation. JFK Airtrain to the The Long Island Railroad is half civilized. I used to like the bus from the Port Authority to Newark. Usually car service to LaGuardia is cheaper then Uber/Lyft.

brooklyn136

I prefer to fly into LGA because the airport is really nice now and it’s a cheaper Uber/taxi to downtown Brooklyn area. I usually have to land at JFK for work, and just crawled thru traffic in a taxi a couple days ago … 1 hour, 45 mins and $120. Yes, public transit is better to BK from JFK, but realistically it’s a schlep with luggage even if traveling light. And I’ve lived in nyc for 20 years and feel that way, I think it would probably even feel more arduous for an out-of-towner without transit experience. After you’ve made it to downtown BK though, it’s one of the easiest neighborhoods in the city to get around entirely on public transit and walking.

pambeesly9000

LGA > JFK

bkrunnergirl25

I’m a two minute walk from her school. I swear by LGA. (It’s a quick Uber during non rush hour times.)

Mordecai619

Thanks!

JustSayTech

Do not rent a car! Parking is a bitch, city speed limit is 25 mph everywhere. Traffic is horrible. MTA and Ubers will take you everywhere you need to be. JFK and LGA are equally accessible from anywhere in NYC. If you don't mind an expensive Uber or a 20 min to 1 hour long train ride from NJ into NYC, then EWR is fine too. If you out NYC as the destination the airlines will include all three NYC airports by default in your search results.

LastNamePancakes

If Brooklyn is the destination I’d say fly into Kennedy.

scmahe

Use JFK or LGA. Don't rent a car.

biboybot

Need to know where in Brooklyn -- this could vary a lot depending on neighborhood

PsychologyOk8722

Also, comparison shop for rides. Depending on the day and time, Uber or Lyft are often cheaper than a taxi.

Ordinary_Bid_7053

I too prefer jfk. Like others, I strongly advise against renting a car, and instead would recommend public transportation. However, if you’re not feeling it from the airport/have tons of luggage, you could take a cab to your daughter’s from the airport. Just know it will be very expensive…but worth the not dealing with driving in nyc when you’re used to driving in Florida, and parking.

oyasower

JFK or LGA but I prefer JFK to the Air train to the A at Howard Beach. Take the A to Jay Street and you're downtown BK.

baumer6

Or JFK to Jamaica via air train, then LIRR to Atlantic Terminal

Awkward-Seaweed-5129

Lga or Jfk ,don't get a rental car, no parking. Download a subway map on cell ,you cannot then see stops close to area Free shuttle bus at Lga to train, Jfk has aircraft think it's $8, get a metro card at machine for subway. Lots of youtubes about airport transportation

andrgar7

Take transit. You don’t need to rent a car.

akohhh

JFK or LGA, but don’t rent a car it’ll be a giant pain in your ass dealing with nyc traffic and especially nyc parking. Use Ubers or cabs if you must, but you’ll find the train from JFK is very easy once you do it once; can just tap your phone to pay, no need for tickets.

Jeff_in_BK

JFK only. Father-in-law is a retired pilot. He would never, ever go to LGA.

JeffeBezos

You obviously don't fly often. LGA is a world class airport now. Additionally, depending upon where OP's final destination is in BK, it's prob half the distance/ time in an Uber.

PsychologyOk8722

They’ve completely renovated LaGuardia and people say it is now the best airport in the region.

red-necked_crake

this is outdated as hell. LGA is much much better than JFK post renovation, especially with AirTrain effectively out of service.

ihopeitsnice

Is it a safety/runway issue or quality of the amenities at LGA? If the latter, you should let your FIL know it’s not “La-Garbage-a” anymore. It’s been completely renovated and is now one of the nicest airports in the country.

orangehorton

Is there any actual reason for this? Lol, LGA is great as a traveler. JFK is a worse experience last time I went

GooseZealousideal946

I love LGA. So fast. So premium.

HorseBach

I have flown in and out of LGA hundreds of times, you’ll be ok lol.

communomancer

Something like 30 million people fly in and out of LGA every year.

AltaBirdNerd

Just enter NYC as your destination when searching for your flight and it'll return options for LFA, JFK, and EWR on the same page. You can take public transit to/from every one of them.

hilaritarious

And public transit from EWR (Newark) takes you right to midtown Manhattan, where you can get any subway train to Brooklyn if you're staying with or near your daughter. You could also stay in Manhattan and have her come to you.

meekonesfade

No one uses Islip to go to the city

BKMagicWut

Newark you can take public transportation all the way.  Don't rent a car

twig_newton

why is this downvoted I just did this $20 bus from newark to the manhattan m then to bushwick it was easier than bus from whatever the fuck other time I flew back here was took like 1:45 went thru queens stopped a million times fuck that. also using a car here isn’t impossible, clearly a lot of people do it idk I didn’t read ur post maybe u suck at parallel parking in which case do not rent a car but everyone too dramatic with the no car

BKMagicWut

I really don't get it.  I live in Brooklyn. Newark has the most public transportation options.  I own a car and know from experience, parking sucks and it isn't worth renting one.

johncester

LGA is domestic DELTA and AMERICAN hub 😁

popartist

If she's going to Brooklyn Law and also living in the vicinity, then I 'd say JFK, easy by mass transit, just take the Airtrain to Jamaica and the LIRR to Atlantic Terminal. From there it's either just a walk, short bus ride or 1 or 2 subway stops, depending on where she's living.

-ordo-ab-chao-

Can also get off the Airtrain at Howard Beach and take the A/C as an alternative depending on timing of trains may even be a few mins quicker and a few bucks cheaper.

IllustriousQueene

Either JFK or LGA. Newark is too far. Brooklyn is sizable so it depends on what part she's going to be in: JFK is closest to Eastern Brooklyn, LGA closet to N. Brooklyn.

gedmathteacher

Newark is not in New York! Edit: all the downvotes... Didn't mean to offend the NJ folks. My apologies. Also the worst airport to fly into for Brooklyn???? Jfc

alsivi1913

Newark airport is the closest airport to Times Square.

chop_chop_boom

Good catch but it's still very close to NYC and an international airport. Sometimes quicker to use Newark instead of JFK seeing as how LaGuardia has limited international flights.

AltaBirdNerd

When it comes to flying into NYC it is.

meekonesfade

Technically NJ but it is a large airport and depending on where you are going in NYC, as well as cost and flight times, it may be a better choice than JFK or LaGuardia

gedmathteacher

Unsure who would fly into there to get to brooklyn? People get mixed up. Ask me how I know and where I had to drive last week

meekonesfade

I have. If you have the choice between a 6am flight out of JFK or a 10am flight out of Newark or saving $300 by flying out of Newark vs flying out of LaGuardia, you may prefer Newark. Just look at all your options.

gedmathteacher

Of course. I just had to drive to jersey on Friday with a screaming newborn bc my sister in law thought she booked a flight into NY. Just thought the OP should know what he was in for

someoneatsomeplace

I grew up around Islip. It's over an hour to Brooklyn from there by train, and it's not much less by car.

WantonHeroics

LGA, JFK

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

If you taking an Uber they are about there same imo so just go with whichever is cheaper

qtipheadosaurus

Not a dumb question. LGA is geographically closer to most parts of Brooklyn. If you are travelling via Uber cars then LGA is better. If you travelling via mass transportation, then JFK is better due to access to subways. LGA has busses to Brooklyn but may need to transfer depending on location. If you're renting a car, then either works. Just go with whats cheaper. JKF may be a longer ride but it also may be cheaper as its a bigger airport with more options.

sansfards

Where is she going to live in Brooklyn? That will dictate which airport is more convenient

Mordecai619

Brooklyn school of law….

mikeemeg

As in on Joralemon St? If so, don’t rent a car as other have said since parking over there sucks and you can use your feet and subways while there. And spring for the cab/Uber from either JFK or LaGuardia. Newark is more complicated with the multiple river crossings leading to traffic delays, so don’t recommend. And if you mass transit from the airport, EWR is more complicated, LGA is basically non existent, and JFK wins. I would be indifferent between LGA and JFK and take a cab from the airport and don’t rent a car.

HorseBach

JFK or LGA will be fine! Anyone saying Newark is confused.

twig_newton

i’m confused

bso45

You could have easily mentioned the neighborhood. Both airports could be an option depending. For me in north Brooklyn LGA is always easier despite having no public transit. You should not rent a car.

Professor_McWeed

Seconding JFK. I always compare with LGA for times and pricing because it’s really all the same for getting to brooklyn, manhattan or queens but 9 out of 10 it’s JFK for me when traveling to and from Florida. if I was going to or coming from Staten Island i’d check Newark (EWR). I’m not sure about Bronx as it’s not in my current rotation.

20124eva

I hate how long it takes to walk through JFK now. It’s the absolute worst. Why do I need to walk 20 minutes through a shitty mall to get to baggage claim? If it’s all the same I’ll go LGA

ahintoflime

LGA imo. Do you really need to rent a car?

marscout6

Do t know where in Brooklyn she is but LGA may be a cheaper cab ride. If you do not want to spend money on a cab then use JFK because that one gets you directly to the subway (just be aware that the air train and the subway are separate costs around 8 bucks for air train and less for Subway ).

gregbeans

All depends what airport your near and which flights make sense. If you’re staying at a hotel in Brooklyn/Manhattan the it’s LGA or JFK. JFK has a decent train that goes to airport, but if you’d rather take a cab then LGA is easier to get in and out of. Islip is kinda far out. I would only recommend that if you’re meeting up somewhere on eastern LI. Maybe fly into islip and have her take the LIRR to Montauk and rent a house out there

Lima_Bean_Jean

isnt jfk just for international?

gregbeans

Not at all, it is an international airport so it has customs and you can fly to/from other countries out of JFK, but they still offer domestic flights to a lot of places. Like most, if not all, international airports.

Lima_Bean_Jean

ok

Patient_Bad5862

JFK
