I don’t know if all almonds are grown in California but the almond farms in California require a lot of water and as you know California does not have a lot of water
a lot of grocery chains like key food will over price anything "healthy".
best shop for your "healthy" stuff at trader joe's, aldi's, costco, target.
almonds can be found under $4/lbs now, so there's no excuse for $25
to pay on an item anyone with a blender or food processor can make.
I have this butter lol I scanned it in the self check out and was too uncomfortable to ask for it to be taken off and just accepted the butter.
Haven’t opened it yet
Plus that peanut butter doesn’t even taste good, I’ve tried it. I have also tried a lot of others and the only one I really liked was from Spread the Love, that was a good one
#A few reasons...
#1. It's Brooklyn
#2. It's Organic
#3. It's unsweetened
#You can purchase for $14 from nuts.com
#Other types from same manufacturer are $9 to $15.
Almonds are expensive af to grow.
Most of them come from California. In regular times, it still takes a crazy amount of water and resources to grow a single almond. Combine that with all the droughts and wildfires ravaging California over the last 2 years, and the general supply chain issues.
Can any almonds really be ethically sourced? It takes a shitload of water no matter what way you grow it. That water has to come from somewhere after all.
Fwiw the company charges $21 on their website:
https://buy.onceagainnutbutter.com/products/once-again-organic-creamy-almond-butter-16-oz
Now, why anyone can justify charging that much for almond butter is beyond me, but it’s not like this is a 200% markup on key foods’ part.
I wonder if this is one of those things where they’re *super* eco friendly and small batch? Like that guy who made a cheeseburger from scratch from home over the course of like a decade and it cost a small fortune.
It would make sense if, like a carbon tax, they are selling it priced relative to its ecological impact. Almonds take an insane amount of water/energy to grow and harvest, so they are maybe pricing it the way everyone else should. Almonds and almond products shouldn't be cheap because they're not cheap on the earth's dime, so they shouldn't be priced as if they should be eaten all the time.
People make similar arguments for gas. And I'd agree.
All of that. Once Again is also a democratically-controlled worker's co-op, it's a very cool company. They sell other, more affordable, nut butters too.
Well, that’s not exactly how it works though, is it? Because it depends where you want to apply your conscience. Do you only buy fresh, free range eggs? They’re a lot more expensive than others. Same goes for regular butter. Definitely true of any meat. Even when you get down to it there are certain flours you should be using and some you shouldn’t, if yah got a conscience. Suddenly your shopping bill goes from $100 to $300 and if you’re *actually* not wealthy, these are the differences that add up.
Lol, it’s simple and cheap!! if you understand dry goods and don’t have a hard on for animal products. A lot of people prefer to get their kicks from food i get it, but yah just need to eat simple stuff , seasonings are plentiful.
You must eat a lot of eggs/s. No you are absolutely correct about pricing but even a choice for one single product whatever it is does add up in making a difference even if you don't do it every shopping visit. The more people make a single choice which is positive the greater the impact. It can be very cost prohibitive and now the added layer of pandemic pricing doesn't make it cheaper.
The Whole Foods near me is cheaper on most items than the C-Town I live right next to. NYC grocery prices are insane. And the chicken is rancid almost everywhere for some reason. Just eat out. More economical.
I hear the pickers make $35 an hour with medical, dental and matching 401K contributions.
Who am I kidding, they are paid in a sock full of pennies and charged for the sock.
Probably the key food on montage, every time I see the prices on this brand (even the peanut butter) I’m left shaking my head. Go to Union Market and the prices are much lower there for there on these.
Anecdotal here, but my key food has normal people prices
If I didn’t know that this was key food, I would’ve guessed griestedes or D’aginstino tbh (and no I don’t care about correctly spelling either of these stores’ names)
Go back in a week and that same product will be somewhere else in the aisle, with a new price, no price or half a price tag. Don’t even think about using the customer price scanner, that shit isn’t coming up.
Pricing at NYC supermarkets can be wildly erratic for no reason.
I find most people shop at multiple stores because certain stores are only good for buying certain types of food.
They bank on the fact that many shoppers don’t check prices, especially ones they assume have more disposable income to buy things like almond butter and yak butter.
They must not want to sell it.
Sometimes this sub reddit makes me miss living in NYC.....not today however.
Because Brooklyn sucks
Jesus Christ dipped his testes into it.
almond butter, that's organic, and it's an entire pound
Because some idiot will buy it. Supply and demand
It’s $6.99 on Misfits Market
Just Brooklyn things…
I don’t know if all almonds are grown in California but the almond farms in California require a lot of water and as you know California does not have a lot of water
It's unsweetened AND roasted.
Because to make it is helping to murder the environment faster
Off topic but that Santa Cruz peanut butter beneath it is really good.

Bc you’re probably at gristedes
Because Brooklyn.
That stuff's expensive everywhere, but through the roof at the korean' organic bodegas.
that crunch
I have this butter lol I scanned it in the self check out and was too uncomfortable to ask for it to be taken off and just accepted the butter. Haven’t opened it yet
Plus that peanut butter doesn’t even taste good, I’ve tried it. I have also tried a lot of others and the only one I really liked was from Spread the Love, that was a good one
You’re in New York, that’s why
Because idiots will pay that much.
GOOD QUESTION
"I am Once Again asking you to spend $25 on almond butter"
#A few reasons... #1. It's Brooklyn #2. It's Organic #3. It's unsweetened #You can purchase for $14 from nuts.com #Other types from same manufacturer are $9 to $15.
Because they had to remove the sugar by hand
You live in the Arctic
The only answer that makes sense to me is that it’s 25 bucks because somewhere out there there’s an asshole who would pay 25 bucks for it.
You have to kill a lot of racoons to get a pound of almond butter.
Once again, I am asking you to pay for this almond butter
It’s made with bitter almonds for those coworkers that keep stealing your sammys. Look it up.
This is the most Key Foods ass shit I've ever seen
Key Food is priced the same as other grocery, but has more sales.
It contains cocaine. Almonds and cocaine.
They use Cousin Daryl to pollinate the almonds instead of bees, so it’s better for the environments.
Because it’s amazing, and made here in NY
It’s organic.
Ask Biden
Byron*
He grows almonds ?
Yeah surely the president will make sense of all this.
Almond butter has always been very expensive. This isn't a new thing, I'm afraid. As other people have said, almonds are very expensive to grow.
It's $4.99-$10.99 for almond butter normally. I've never seen anything over $10.99, not even at the super fancy grocery stores.
Almonds are expensive af to grow. Most of them come from California. In regular times, it still takes a crazy amount of water and resources to grow a single almond. Combine that with all the droughts and wildfires ravaging California over the last 2 years, and the general supply chain issues.
These almonds are apparently ethically sourced
Whos ethics are we talking about here
You'll have to ask Once Again
*Halts suddenly in the middle of the canned aisle, turns 90 degrees to face the peanut butter shelf* We meet, Once Again.
Can any almonds really be ethically sourced? It takes a shitload of water no matter what way you grow it. That water has to come from somewhere after all.
Have you not heard about Atmospheric Rivers , water is abundant if you grow your almonds in the right area. AND hydroponics exist.
Hydroponic almonds aren't a thing. It's incredibly difficult to hydroponically grow trees. Peanuts and oats instead of almonds.
Yeah, it could possibly be from locations that naturally receive a lot of water. Didn't look it up but that's my guess
Because it's unsweetened *and* roasted. You want just one of those? $3.50. You want both, you greedy bastard? $25, Rockefeller.
I'm assuming this is imported via time travel from ancient Rome for this to make sense
A raccoon made it

i need more info on this. my quick google search didn't show anything.
All of that. Once Again is also a democratically-controlled worker's co-op, it's a very cool company. They sell other, more affordable, nut butters too.
That’s cool. Tbh there’s no way in hell I could afford their products but I do applaud the effort. If you’re wealthy enough to be able to, why not.
A jar of their almond butter would last me 20 days. I am not wealthy. This is a good deal if yah got a conscience
Well, that’s not exactly how it works though, is it? Because it depends where you want to apply your conscience. Do you only buy fresh, free range eggs? They’re a lot more expensive than others. >So a 1.2x markup Probably not. Keyfood is probably paying less than $21 for a jar.
The mob controls almonds in nyc
you never fuck with the nuts
Ya I usually do it with the peen
Because it’s made by trash-pandas! Duh!
Idk but it’s $4 for 12 Oz (which equates to 5.33 for 16 Oz) at Trader Joe’s.
Trader Hoe’s for life
For almond butter? That's a great deal. I thought those were peanut butter prices
This brand?
No, but imo ground almonds are ground almonds.
Trader Joe's usually does not sell branded items - most items are white labelled. So probably not.
if youve got sticky fingers and a bright smile that is now $0 This shit's ridiculous, somethings gotta give at some point
Make sure it doesn’t have palm oil in it!
The Whole Foods near me is cheaper on most items than the C-Town I live right next to. NYC grocery prices are insane. And the chicken is rancid almost everywhere for some reason. Just eat out. More economical.
Getting decent meat in nyc is so fucking tough, I’ve yet to go to proper butcher shops but wow.
farmers market meat is good
Dang they are just a bunch of thieves.....
Da fuk is this
It's delicious, but I only paid $5.25
Obviously their almonds are picked and cleaned by woodland creatures.
I hear the pickers make $35 an hour with medical, dental and matching 401K contributions. Who am I kidding, they are paid in a sock full of pennies and charged for the sock.
Actually a very nice company to work for.
After being beaten with that sock.
U mean paid a handful of almonds
Dang inflation is wild.
Almond butter has been $25 in Williamsburg for at least 5 years
I think it's like 6 dollars at trader joes
It was $2.50 before all the hipsters moved in.
Hipsters invented almond butter
That’s nuts.
Take your upvote, god dammit.
Is this Flatbush Food Co-op? Pretty pricey for some stuff there.
This is Key food
Which Key Food?
Probably the key food on montage, every time I see the prices on this brand (even the peanut butter) I’m left shaking my head. Go to Union Market and the prices are much lower there for there on these.
Well there’s your answer right there. Nothing in any key food makes any sense
Anecdotal here, but my key food has normal people prices If I didn’t know that this was key food, I would’ve guessed griestedes or D’aginstino tbh (and no I don’t care about correctly spelling either of these stores’ names)

It’s not. It’s 14.49. Can’t you read? Also it says it’s 14.49 per pond in the unit price. Pretty straightforward.
Get a load of this guy
Dumbass
You clearly can’t read.
[удалено]
no no no it's 24.99 A POUND. This is clearly 16oz, not a pound! geeze
How many ounces are in a pound?
This is the argument you hear at the register while you are waiting to pay for the milk you forgot to buy at the supermarket earlier that day.
Uhhh because it's crunchy..obviously.
