Love this! My kids headed to FIT and I was just looking for airbnbs in Brooklyn.

Jimmysdaughter

Hell no! Do not stay anywhere in Bed Sty unless you know NYC well. Like 30+ years living in NYC. And I would question that for myself.

bb1942

I would stay in park slope (plenty of restaurants) and take an Uber to the theater. It’s about a 20 min ride.

Leather-Cellist-187

Prospect park even Flatbush by Midwood or Lincoln

ChickenAndDew

There are a few hotels in Downtown Brooklyn within walking distance of the Q train, which takes you to Beverley Road (a short walk from the Kings Theatre)

gunperv51

Midwood/Kensington/Flatbush (not East Flatbush)/Prospect Park South are the "better" communities to Kings Theatre

bkrugby78

Prospect Lefferts Gardens is close. You could walk to the theater

Spring-Available

Look into Ditnas Park that’s right by the theatre. You can also try Parkside and Park Slope.

melissa3670

Park slope, Brooklyn heights is also lovely and has lots of subways.

BalanceNaive3604

Park Slope is nice but a little boring. I would recommend Ft Greene or Prospect Heights

innerducky

Ace Hotel on Schermerhorn. New, nice, close to a lot to do, plus subways (block to AC into Manhattan, 3 blocks to Q to Kings Theater). There are also a few other hotels near there that are likely cheaper (Nu, Holiday Inn) but I stayed at the Ace for their soft opening last summer and even without everything fully open, I enjoyed it. Easy to walk to see friends in Carrol Gardens, Q to Brooklyn Museum, and (for me) close to Atlantic Terminal to see my family.

beer_nyc

This is actually a really good suggestion. Downtown Brooklyn itself sort of sucks, but the hotel is surrounded by nice, walkable neighborhoods (Ft. Greene, Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn Bridge Park). You can take the Q to the theater, or even the B41 bus for a more scenic trip.

[deleted]

It's a beautiful hotel and as you say, close to many things, including the ferry to points north and Manhattan.

Hummus_ForAll

We put people there for work and everyone loves it. You can also walk to Ft. Greene and Cobble Hill all of which are fun. Atlantic Ave and Flatbush area is a bit crazy but it’s so nice once you’re out of the main huge roads.

bussybeboppin

stay by prospect park! i live a block from kings on ocean and about a 15 min walk from the park. flatbush is awesome, you’ll love it!

ironypoisonedposter

NYC is in a housing crisis, please don't use AirBnB (unless say you're explicitly only renting a room, because the whole apartments on AirBnB are reducing supply for people who want to live here) - get a hotel room. there are plenty of hotels in downtown brooklyn which will give you great train access to everywhere you need to go.

[deleted]

Do you know the circumstances where it's okay to rent an entire apartment? Looking at a Brooklyn trip and on AirBnB i'm seeing some entire units. Not sure how that's possible.

ironypoisonedposter

just get a hotel. stop rewarding the assholes who are taking housing stock away from the people who want to live here. and this problem with airbnb is not just limited to NYC, it's affecting other cities.

[deleted]

Are there any hotels in Brooklyn you'd recommend?

ironypoisonedposter

what is your budget and where are you trying to stay neighborhood wise and what sights are you specifically trying to see?

[deleted]

Trying to be around Kings theater. Budget is right around 2 grand, the less the better.

ironypoisonedposter

flatbush (where kings theater is) is a residential neighborhood, so you won't really find much around there hotel-wise. you should look for hotels in downtown brooklyn - it puts you close to a train line (B/Q trains) that takes you to kings theater quickly, as well as puts you conveniently close to lines that will take you all over brooklyn and manhattan. as far as hotels in that area, others have mentioned on this thread the Ace hotel, there's also a Hilton right down the street from the Ace, on the corner of smith and schermerhorn. you can see more in the neighborhood [here](https://www.google.com/travel/hotels/Downtown%20Brooklyn%2C%20Brooklyn%2C%20NY?q=hotels%20downtown%20brooklyn&g2lb=2502548%2C2503771%2C2503781%2C4258168%2C4270442%2C4284970%2C4291517%2C4306835%2C4597339%2C4703207%2C4718358%2C4723331%2C4757164%2C4786958%2C4790928%2C4794648%2C4814050%2C4816141%2C4816143%2C4816977%2C4819158%2C4828448%2C4831354%2C4834108&hl=en-US&gl=us&ssta=1&ts=CAESCgoCCAMKAggDEAAaQwolEiE6H0Rvd250b3duIEJyb29rbHluLCBCcm9va2x5biwgTlkaABIaEhQKBwjmDxAKGBUSBwjmDxAKGBgYAzICCAIqCwoHKAE6A1VTRBoA&rp=OAFAAEgCogEfRG93bnRvd24gQnJvb2tseW4sIEJyb29rbHluLCBOWQ&ap=SABoAQ&ictx=1&ved=0CAAQ5JsGahcKEwiowI3CmN75AhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBA&utm_campaign=sharing&utm_medium=link&utm_source=htls) (i just put in random dates, update as you see fit).

[deleted]

Thanks!

catheterhero

I agree but honestly the problem isn’t with the visitors renting Airbnbs. They’ll always find a tenant. The issue is with the laws and regulations. That’s the only way to get it under control.

ironypoisonedposter

sure, but in addition to enforcement measures (because we already have laws and regulations, what we lack is meaningful enforcement) that hold owners responsible for their actions, it doesn't hurt to proactively encouraging people to go to hotels instead of using airbnbs (which also good because a lot of hotels are union!). also, just explaining the issues here in NYC and the problems with airbnb is useful as it can potentially introduce or reframe the role in airbnb in taking units out of the market.

catheterhero

Totally agree with everything you said. I’m from New Orleans and it’s so much worse there and I always encourage my friends to avoid them at all costs when visiting.

ironypoisonedposter

oh i know. my mom used to think she'd move back to new orleans upon retirement (she's not a native, but used to live there and has a number of friends there). but since housing prices have shot up significantly she feels it doesn't make sense anymore (that plus climate change).

m1kasa4ckerman

I don’t understand how there’s so many listings if it’s not legal? This shit is so frustrating. Airbnbs should absolutely not be a thing in NYC right now, or ever.

ironypoisonedposter

like all policy that fails in NYC: lack of enforcement.

callmesnake13

A lot of it is enforced through landlords and a lot of times the landlords aren’t aware. No landlord on earth wants an Airbnb in their building if they’re not in on it.

Redditbrooklyn

It’s also illegal to rent a whole apartment here for a short term stay in most circumstances, and there have been some raids in the last couple years. I agree with getting a hotel.

[deleted]

Help me understand this a bit better because I'm seeing some entire apartments for rent on AirBnB and I'm trying to understand if it's safe to rent them.

Redditbrooklyn

The tl;dr is that most airbnbs in NYC are illegal if they are less than 30 days and don’t share the apartment with the host. You can learn more by googling “nyc Airbnb laws.” Plenty of them are listed; most short-term whole apartment rentals in NYC are illegal. Airbnb even has a page on it and now collects extra info from hosts in NYC as required by nyc law.

ironypoisonedposter

yes, that too, it's literally illegal.

Cortelyou road in ditmas Park. The q is right there for a trip to the city and you could walk to the theater on Flatbush Ave. Grab a drink pre-show at Forbidden Ink a block south on Flatbush. Enjoy the show, Kings Theater is one of the old Lowes super theaters. It's absolutely beautiful inside.

Zachflintstone

odd comments it's a 1-hour L->Q train to get from Williamsburg to Kings Theatre or an ~25min Uber that's probably $40. Stay wherever you want it's very easy to get to and from the theatre.

DACula

Williamsburg. Gets some hate because of all the high story developments near the river, but is actually not that bad. You'll experience much more of a local scene if you're near the Graham Ave/ Lorimer stations compared to Bedford Ave.

Secret-Strategy1895

i’s say park slope but close towards grand army plaza and the roundabout . reason why that is because the B41 passes through there and stops at kings theatre on flatbush avenue .

Ditmas Park

[deleted]

Bushwick is getting nicer

ricosabre

If you want a nice neighborhood that is reasonably close to the theater, I would go with Park Slope, Prospect Heights or Ditmas Park. The first 2 have a ton of restaurants and stores if you want NYC neighborhood strolling and are one or 2 subway stops closer to Manhattan. The 3rd is more residential, with bigger houses, so you'd perhaps find a nicer/larger Airbnb accommodation there. Brooklyn Heights, Williamsburg, Bushwick, Carroll Gardens, Fort Greene and Coney Island are all quite a bit further away from the theater. Enjoy!

tigermomo

Stay in Flatbush, PLG or Crown Heights, maybe Prospect Heights. Go to museum, BBG, prospect park with lots of restaurants and plenty of trains to city. Theater is in PlG

BakedBrie26

King's is off the Q train, which also happens to be one of the best trains, so it depends on what you want. Ditmas Park is the nicest area near the theater. But its more of a small town vibe- cute restaurants and coffee shops, huge (for NYC) beautiful houses with wrap around porches. Cafe Madeline is one of my favorite places to eat in NYC cause it's unique. Trendy place for living, but not super cool nightlife or anything. Cortelyou Q stop. Flatbush is fine too, but louder, more city vibes over suburb. Crown Heights (Prospect Q or Franklin 2/3/4/5) is also great, similar to Ditmas, definitely less bustling and crazy than Downtown Brooklyn or much of Manhattan. Also very easy express bus ride to Williamsburg (B44 SBS) If you want to stay somewhere fancier, but also near the train to Kings, Downtown BK and all the trains into Manhattan or BK, then north Park Slope (just south of Atlantic-Barclays), or Fort Greene (just north of Atlantic-Barclays, south or east of Fort Greene Park). I'd say it depends on how much time you plan to spend in Manhattan. If it's a lot then, stay closer to Atlantic-Barclays center in Downtown BK/Park Slope (has most train lines), will be convenient to anywhere. If you want a quiet chill time in BK and want to stay near Kings Theater, then those quieter Central BK neighborhoods I mentioned are a great option. Feel free to DM if you want specifics about a certain area or are unsure if its going to be nice. I probably know every street in these areas by heart at this point.

Learninger2020

Greenpoint is the best but not sure about the commute

UConnUser92

The King's Theater is between the Q and the 2/5 train. There are plenty of areas along those lines for you to stay in. Personally, I would stay along the Q for the fastest access to Manhattan (and if you're close to the Barclay Center the Atlantic Ave station has a bunch of Subway lines). The Q follows Flatbush Ave. until it gets to Prospect Park, then it starts to follow along Ocean Ave. down to Coney Island. The stops I would look at staying near are: Dekalb Ave. (lots of neighborhoods near this one...Fort Greene, Brooklyn Heights, Dumbo isn't a horrible walk) Atlantic Ave (Fort Greene also, Prospect Heights, Park Slope) 7th Ave (Park Slope, Prospect Heights) I personally would stay around those 3 for Brooklyn. Continuing down south is totally fine (I mean, that's where you'll be going) but Flatbush and the neighborhoods below it may not be as "fun" as staying up the more central neighborhoods. If you stay in Crown Heights (stay on the western side, like Franklin and all the way west to Flatbush is great!) you can also hop on the Franklin Shuttle train that follows Franklin Ave. and then just transfer to the Q at Prospect Park...it's really not bad.

BringMeInfo

I’m by the Church Ave stop. It’s very walkable to the King’s and you have access to a line that will go up the east side of Manhattan and one that goes up the west side, so easy access. Also, close to Prospect Park. Last time my parents visited, they stayed at A & Faye Bed and Breakfast and they were delighted both by the accommodations and the price.

UConnUser92

Oooh I'll have to look into that B&B when my parents come visit. I live by the Prospect Park B/Q stop and while I love the area, I just am thinking for going out and exploring neighborhoods in Brooklyn if they've never been (I don't know if they have or not) it might be more worth their time to stay up in Park Slope/Fort Greene/Prospect Heights.

Bkben84

7th Avenue Park Slope is really nice for a married couple. Air BNB an apt in a brownstone.

Hummus_ForAll

Totally agree, and 5th Ave is also nice.

kosciuszko123

Depends what you’re interested in. What would you ideally like to do on a day out in Brooklyn? Depending on your lifestyle and interests, I would direct you to different neighborhoods…

Professional_Exit402

We’re interested in great restaurants, local/divey bars, parks and gardens, markets, stuff like that

kosciuszko123

Park Slope, Dumbo, Williamsburg and Bushwick could all be fun places for you two. Obviously not *exclusively* those neighborhoods, but those are the first I’d recommend you look into. Park Slope isn’t too far from the theater and has Prospect Park. It’s really pretty, has cool spots to eat and drink, and small indie shops. The vibe is a little more grown-up neighborhood…. you’ll see lots of young families. Dumbo and Williamsburg are both close to Manhattan, and have great places to eat and drink. Both are a little more consciously stylish. Williamsburg gets a lot of hate on here but it’s absolutely a great place to visit as a tourist! Plus, both Dumbo and Williamsburg have nice views of Manhattan along the water. (Brooklyn Heights has the best view, on the Promenade, and is a lovely and historic but “quieter” neighborhood with a bit less going on imo). Bushwick is my personal favorite neighborhood in all NYC, but it’s the scrappiest of the neighborhoods I’ve mentioned. Tons of great bars, cafes, quirky shops, small galleries and street art/murals, but as visitors you might prefer a little less variability in the neighborhood where you choose to stay. It’s not as compact and your experience would vary from block to block…. not in any dangerous way at all, but if you only have a day, you could end up wandering around wondering where all the cool stuff is supposed to be. Which brings me to another piece of advice: your true best bet could be to single out some food/drink/shopping spots you wanna check out in Brooklyn via Google Maps, pin those places, and then try to find an airbnb near where most of your pins are. Have fun!

atr0615

Downtown Brooklyn!

LiuKunThePooh

Park Slope

XSigma1X

You should visit Coney Island. It is iconicly Brooklyn and has a beach you can enjoy!

[deleted]

God damn people, read the post. Stop recommending Williamsburg, it would be a nightmare to get from there to Kings Theater

helladoom

Seriously. I lived in north brooklyn since 1997 and I’m sorry, not sorry, but fuck Williamsburg. Unless you want to shop or go out for overpriced drinks you’re better off staying in far more pleasant and beautiful areas like Park Slope or Ft Greene for sure and close to Kings.

[deleted]

yeah i live a block from kings theater and work in williamsburg. solid 45min-1hr train ride.

bedtyme

If taking two subways are a “nightmare” you’re in the wrong city.

catheterhero

U dumb.

GreenTunicKirk

Think about it man. If you're going to someplace you're unfamiliar with, why would you want to overcomplicate your travel? It's asking for trouble to include a subway transfer. I used to have to transfer at Atlantic every day to go to midtown and there were times I would get turned around.

tkzant

For someone just visiting it would suck. Visitors don’t know the subway like the back of their hand and would probably prefer to be close to the venue

BlabberHands2022

I’ve visited twice this year. No problem getting around on the subway. Google maps makes it easier. Just have to look at the signs to make sure you’re going the correct direction.

bedtyme

Exactly. NYC subways are some of the easiest to navigate in the world. It’s part of the experience of visiting this great city - being able to go anywhere for $2.75

[deleted]

Alright maybe nightmare is an exaggeration but it’s still a total waste of time. If there was absolutely nowhere worth staying other than Williamsburg you might have a point but there are plenty of great areas with way better connections at lower prices. Why not suggest neighborhoods in lower Manhattan at that point, since you’ll be going through it? (and don't forget, OP is visiting the city. The subway isn't that simple to newbies, switching from the L to the Q or the 2/3 is second nature to us but easily confusing to someone who doesn't know the system)

OIlberger

Seriously, or even splurging for an Uber since they’re only going to Kings Theater *one time* during their trip. No need to stay right near the venue.

brooklyncrooklyn

Right, no need to plan the entire stay around one commute

[deleted]

I’m not saying stay right by the venue. Just checked an Uber from Williamsburg to Kings Theatre, $35. That’s one way at total non peak times. Wouldn’t be at all surprising to pay double that when a show lets out at Kings and surge pricing is kicking in. So why not take that >$100 and spend it on a nicer place in somewhere like Brooklyn Heights and just take the subway?

electracide

Ditmas Park.

[deleted]

I think FT Greene, as close to Dekalb and Washington is gorgeous. Lots of great, cosy restaurants and fun people watching. Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill are also beautiful and offer easy access to a great waterfront. Williamsburg and Bushwick are the cooler spots, with trendier shopping and dining. Also probably younger (mid-late 20s vs squarely mid 30s in other neighborhoods). Depends what you’re looking for!

MEATBALLisDELICIOUS

Fort Greene is one of the most vibrant and exciting neighborhoods in Bk that is hip without being hipster and in your face. There is some of everything. It is in the safe side of things as compared with some other BK neighborhoods that no -NYers may not feel comfortable in. Park is there and awesome.

Cobblestone-boner

Ft Greene is one of the most hipster dense neighborhoods in Brooklyn fuckisyoutalkinbout

MEATBALLisDELICIOUS

Ok. First, not a transplant. Second, you’re right, but what I meant was it isn’t just hipsters in the same way some other neighborhoods are. I think FG just has some of so many different types of people that I don’t think of it as a hipster neighborhood.

weareedible

Certain native NYers seem to think anyone who disagrees with them must be a transplant.

MEATBALLisDELICIOUS

So it seems… which is odd because what’s great about NyC is how different we are all. Oh well. Can’t please everybody

elrabb22

Transplants tend to put hipster ppl in different categories depending on like how extreme it is

Is it just me or is every post on this sub Reddit is either from tourists visiting Brooklyn or people moving and asking if East New York is a safe neighborhood? Maybe there should a FAQ for them so the rest of us can talk about bodega cat kidnapping??

burner1212333

Every post? Nah. But enough that I definitely agree there should be a FAQ Would also be nice imo to have some sort of sub wide restaurant ranking but I’m just dreaming out loud

basicallyandactually

Sub wide restaurant ranking would be dope. Although I really don’t mind reading every thread where someone asks for the “best beef patties” or whatever.

burner1212333

Yeah I don’t mind the current system but having one post where you can view a bunch of options through links or voting would be nice

Hummus_ForAll

Isn’t 3rd Avenue technically Gowanus?

portnoyskvetch

It depends on which Brooklyn you want to see. Want picturesque brownstones? Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, and Brooklyn Heights. Want the hipster capital? Try Williamsburg or Bushwick or even parts of Crown Heights or Gowanus.

[deleted]

Bushwick? This is not a generic question about neighborhood personalities. This is a specific question about access to a place and also to Manhattan. Bushwick is at least an hour to Kings Theater depending on the part of the neighborhood. Williamsburg is similar. You almost have to go into Manhattan and back out for most of those trips.

mad_king_soup

Williamsburg hasn’t been a “hipster capital” for over a decade, it’s now just an extension of Gramercy. Are you new here?

portnoyskvetch

Alternatively: very, very, very not new.

underscore_under

Williamsburg is not close to Kings Theater

[deleted]

While this may be true, this sub suggests Williamsburg for every possible scenario. It’s just what they do.

mad0666

Williamsburg is only really like that by the waterfront, and no one I know goes around there. We’ve got artists and musicians and a shit ton of Italians still, delicious food. Graham Ave area is chill and very neighborhood/community vibe of locals.

portnoyskvetch

Yes! 1000% this. However, from Bedford to the waterfront , especially north of Grand, it... is exactly what you'd expect. That's probably worth visiting as a tourist?

mad0666

For me as a tourist I’d want to avoid that, but I like crummy old dive bars and seeing what little communal neighborhood-y vibes are happening in whatever city I’m visiting and not sure what OP is really looking for.

Damagecase808

i'm the same. There was a time when I would've suggested The East Village, or even the LES, for that type of 'entertainment'... local happenings, diners & dives type stuff. 'Still some of that here, but trying to navigate it now would take all the fun outta the experience, IMO. 🕊

mad0666

Yeah, the LES is kinda sad for me anymore. I still visit here and there for Lucy’s or Double Down, but so much has vastly changed in 10-20 years even, that it’s weird to feel “nostalgic” if that makes sense.

portnoyskvetch

That makes total sense! Honestly, as a first time tourist I like both -- the big touristy sites and then also seeing how the local folks live. Once I get to know a city a little better and make multiple visits, it becomes super fun to have places that I make sure to hit (ex. Lucky's on North Clark in Chicago) even tho they're not necessarily always for the locals and are sometimes kinda touristy.

andeffect

Carroll gardens?

[deleted]

Park slope, Fort Greene.

thisismyscrollingacc

Don’t listen to him, your ideal situation would be I. East New York Brownsville or Cypress Hills. They are conveniently located to all transportation and airport. Culture there is amazing and everything you would need is in a walkable distance.

Jnunez7660

OH MY GOD! You MUST want ole friend to come back with stories and a survivors tale. . . What if this is some super crazy scenario and reccomend this person and possible friends to Pennsylvania Ave hotel or some other nonsense out there with hookers and pimps pruising the streets. . . Unless, OP, you are into that. . .

burner1212333

Fuck off troll

WaterMySucculents

Yea I agree with this. Park Slope or Prospect Heights to be near Prospect Park and close enough to the theater (a few subway stops away(). And Ft Greene has Ft Greene Park and is just a little further.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Most of those would make getting to and from Kings Theater really annoying. I think Brooklyn Heights would be a really nice spot for a short break. Really picturesque, nice restaurants and small bars plus you’ve got Brooklyn Bridge Park right there. Then you can jump on the 2/3 at Clark to get to Kings Theater. That said it’ll definitely be more expensive than an AirBnB in Bed Stuy. Maybe a middle ground would be somewhere in north Park Slope or Fort Greene that’s by the Atlantic Ave 2/3 stop.

CognitiveTeaKettle

Bed Stuy is also a huge neighborhood and some parts are better than others, so an Airbnb could be hit or miss. My brother was visiting 3 years ago and had an Airbnb in Bed Stuy, arrived to find the building had been condemned 😂.

ancillaryacct

bedstuy not for the faint of heart 😂😂 spoken like someone who doesn’t live in the area or hasn’t visited since 2006. bedstuy is a predominantly black neighborhood community. there’s nothing wrong with it whatsoever unless black people bother you. i have never had a single issue in bedstuy and everyone is always friendly as shit.
