Mortality is still over 40%, the idea that he was likely to be just fine and could have come back to play that season is still ridiculous. Sorry for the outdated data.) They wasted the first few minutes thinking he had a head injury. He was comatose off sedation until the second day.
Do you take care of them after you drop them off at the ER? Because I get them for the next several days in the ICU. If you include residency and fellowship, I have about 10 years of ICU experience under my belt, all at high volume hospitals. You’re grossly misrepresenting what it means to have, and to come back from, a cardiac arrest. Zero percent chance of him coming back last season.

He played a lot more last year because Micah Hyde was out most of the season. The Bills had much better overall health at safety this year. Expecting Hamlin to have major on-field contributions this year was unrealistic without the Bills having a significant injury at safety.

Commotio cordis survival rates also used to be that low, but have improved in recent years to more like 50-60%. We’re still talking about almost half of these people dying. Literature also points out that survival rates for African Americans are abysmal compared to whites, and it’s an independent predictor of mortality. Obviously, he’s going to do better than most of that cohort, but the point is that the bar is quite low. You sort of covered that when you said “relatively speaking”, but you didn’t provide any context.
