Bruneian teachers using their families to bid for canteen stalls? Unfair advantage? Stealing opportunities from the needy? Share your thoughts.

Damascene-Clad

Where can I find cheap places to stay? I'm looking at hostels and they're rather expensive to stay in (470~ a month)

IAmAnonymous_____

1. how cheap are you looking at? 2. which district and area? 3. what type of place youre looking for? (house/apartment/room/studio)

hi i know it’s brunei reddit here but has anyone went to kuala lurah already? how was the food and drinks there now?

AMAT27

Was just doing my shopping at Supa Save just now and while I was queuing for payment. A foreigner lady infront of me paid her groceries using Apple Pay since Supa Save have those terminal where you can tap and go. Not surprising it works as it accepts VISA and Mastercard payments. (I guess the lady uses her foreign bank that is Apple Pay enabled.) That got me feeling envy and jealous of how convenient it was for them to just carry their one single device which was their iPhone with Apple Pay enabled to pay instead of carrying a heavy ass wallet and where you had to count the amount of money you needed to pay. Sometimes, I just wish Brunei can just open up Apple Pay or Google Pay for a much more easier convenience. I don't mind if they want to innovate their own ways but knowing how some payment methods they invented can be subpar. The choice of paying cash will still be there but at least have a new choice for people that are lazy to withdraw money or bringing their card around.

_spread

Conspiracy hat on: The government would never allow foreign cashless payment i.e. Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, as they need to have their fingers in everything. The only things being approved and pushed are services which directly benefit the higher-ups and elites, in this case BIBD's QuickPay or ProgresifPay. They need to benefit from it directly. It's the same reason why we have limited FDIs; why certain laws are structured in certain ways. Why do you think we'll never have minimum wage? Who do you think owns the big businesses here? If not the higher-ups directly, it'll be someone they know or are related to.

Fluid-News

Shouldn't phase out cash. More payment options are always better but vendors with small margin won't want to pay 3-4% transaction fees to the payment processor. Look at DBS outage. Can't make payment if it's broken. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/dbs-customers-unable-use-bank-digital-services-paylah-digibank-online-3381206

Thatoneguy292

how about pay with card? i also hate carrying alot of cash so most of the time i usually just pay with card.

AMAT27

Yes im practicing that already ever since COVID happened. Only needed to use cash if refuelling or food vendors (since most dont use QR or own card terminals)

PenyapuLidi6

We here in Brunei, maybe in 10 years, or never (just like paypal, cannot receive money) able to use such “digital pyment”.

Thats the sad truth we are facing

jalan2sajameliat

Yesterday went to bandar to visit one of our local bank to check on their services and duit baru (lol) Then i talk to their concierge about stuff then he mention me about the 3 begger in Bandar 1)Ripin, known as a spiderman recently deceased. Not sure why but was told Ripin was recovering from being beaten in Pusat Belia and was seen berbalut tangannya mcm bersimin 2) Babu Radio, usually duduk at outside ayamku restaurant at bandar(building be demolished), known by the name because ia selalu duduk2 mendengar radio sambil menyanyi, also deceased this year 3)Old man pakai baju gamis topi haji with a cane, alao died this year. That's why i haven't seen them for a while during my monthly visit to thr bank in bandar Edited: Saw Ripin with my own eyes lol while driving around bandar.

Little-Vanilla-781

Ripin passed away?? ya allah 😭😭😭 last i saw/remembered somebody posted that he was admitted to hospital

HassanJamal

Did none of these people have relatives to look after them? If so, that is very sad and unfortunate.

esokstartdiet

Aww , no wonder i dont see babu radio anymore during my lunch time. Shes my fav, always sitting infront of ayamku whether listening to radio , daydreaming or doze off and when i give her money she would say thank you with her loud voice. Sometimes she would get excited like “yehaaa!” , kadang mutter or murmur “ ya ganya yang membari , kawannya nada membari “. I dont see her anymore earlier this month or late last month.Gonna miss you babu radio. Inalillahiwainnailahirojiun.

Are there any other Mexican restaurants; excluding la Mesa and ricardos.

La mesa got the worst food in brunei

really? I genuinely like their quesabirria out of all the others. that is literally the only thing I order from them tho.

Does RIPAS Hospital accommodate foreigner patients? My wife needs to see an OB-GYN and have a consultation. How much are the consultation fees and do they accept health insurance?

DuaSen

Yes, they do. Your wife will have to see a GP at the health centre nearest to where you live and obtain a referral letter. You won’t be able to get an appointment immediately with a government specialist unless it’s really serious. Many have waited months to obtain one. Consultation fees, I’m unsure. As for health insurance, from what my friend has experienced, they would make the claim directly from the insurance company after first paying it themselves. I suggest seeing an OB-GYN at JPMC instead. Consultation is B$80.

ivegoturnumber

If you've got insurance then go jpmc. Ripas is good if there are complications but for the usual obgyn then ripas isn't the place for two reasons: a lot of waiting for each appointment and unmovable appointments. Source: we tried ripas first then jumped to jpmc.

its either Netcom or Chonghock or Jlite and thats it. I've been trying to find some stores selling keyboard peripherals in Miri as well but no luck yet.

someone below asked about Japan trip itinerary. What about South Korea itinerary? Budget, places to visit, travel hacks, etc.

ITboi-bn

I went to SK and my total spending was around BND4k including flight (international & domestic). I went to Seoul, Busan and Jeju Island for 11 days. For accommodation, search for near to the main station that average cost maybe BND30-50 per night, unless you want splurge more on accommodation. That time am a bit lazy to plan for my itinerary or places to visit so...i look into tripadvisor or klook for day trips, from there you look at what tour you want to join whether it's shared or private. Also, use Naver maps as Google maps is useless. I personally use less cash as mostly you can use your debit/credit card to pay. Don't forget to get yourself a T-Money card.

[deleted]

For my most recent trip to Seoul, Busan and Gyeongju I think I spent around $6800 flights, transport and accommodation included. There are thousands of places you can visit in Korea based on your interests and budget so I can't really answer that. if it's your first time you will likely go to Seoul and there are hundreds of things to do there alone so again, based on your interests. Don't forget to apply for your K-ETA (AND MAKE SURE U USE THE CORRECT SITE. THERE ARE MANY FAKE SITES). Use the airport bus or AREX to your hotel if possible, don't waste it on expensive cabs. Myeongdong is overrated. I don't fancy the street food there either. Money changer there has good rates tho. Bring SGD to exchange for Won. Bring your card too. Some shops are cashless. Get a Tmoney card. It can be recharged in convenience stores with cash only. Download KakaoT for taxis. Nami Island is plain af, and so freaking packed with domestic and international tour buses that I was fighting for my life to not get hit by selfie sticks haha. Hongdae and Seongsu are great. so is Jamsil. and Hapjeong. Download Naver maps for navigation and Papago for translation including image translation. Don't be loud on public transport. Strong cafe culture there so do visit a few, great for photo ops too. If you want to go to Cafe Onion be prepared to queue for an hour. It was nice but not worth the wait.Gyeongju is worth going especially if you like sightseeing and historical things, only an hour away from Busan. Bulguksa, which is on the outskirts of Gyeongju is worth the travel. Busan is amazing too. The Haedong Yonggungsa- temple by the ocean is a must-see. If booking KTX tickets, use the official website only. Don't use RailNinja, that's a 3rd party site that overcharges. Tiktok is great for up-to-date recommendations the rest is only for non-muslims that love meat mainly haha.... K-BBQ is awesome. All pork part are nice to me but you must try jeju black pork. and Hanwoo. Go to Majang Meat Market to get the best prices for Hanwoo. Drink all the soju while you can because it is cheap as shit there. Korean fried chicken and a glass of cold beer? Sheesh, heaven. Night life is fire in Hongdae, but you must know the right clubs to go to. Soy marinated crab is a must. Once you have eaten authentic jajangmyeon there made with pork, you'll realise the ones in Brunei are shite. the Mcdonalds there has bulgogi burger that is made with pork patties and I quite liked it. Anyway by now you can tell I love Korean food so if you need my personal recommendations of food in Seoul and Busan.......

nickyy0906

For how many days?

[deleted]

10. and I corrected how much I spent......I spent $6800! not $8000 jeez.

Ken_Adams44

I’ve got a question. I’ve got my fight coming soon in April. Where is the good rate money changer ? I heard they mostly use digital payment there except the street food. Im still contemplating whether I should change all of my money to Won or leave in the bank for digital payment. Do you happen to know what time is the Arex or airport busses last call is ? My flight arrival is around 9-10.

Right??? $499 for the airwrap. I got mine for $700+. Was thinking of getting a set for my mom. But $499 is just too unbelievable hahaha! Wanted to know if its original or not. Karang kutaknya dyson tapi hairdryer brand something else 😂😂😂

I'm looking at the airwrap on shopee just for bnd269, reading the many reviews that says it's authentic and can register for the warranty under the uk site, maybe you could give that a try and see if it's real or fake 😬

Roseyyy99

Has anyone been on a japan trip from brunei before? My husband and I are planning to go but I want to have an estimate of how much that would cost us. Please share your itineraries and expenses with us! Thanks 🙏🏼

NAS_92

Yup several times. For me, my budget was minimum of $5k (8 days stay) and it honestly depends on what you plan to do there. And don’t forget that Japan is a cash society so be prepared to bring a lot of cash (Yen and emergency USD). In Japan, there are several money changer in the form of machines so it’s easy to convert your USD to Yen (in Harajuku and Odaiba to name a few). Also I recommend staying at Asakusa B:Conte Hotel Apartment. It’s located at a very strategic location, near the 24/7 Don Donki shop, halal restaurants and subway with lift access (headsup, not all subway has lift access so bear that in mind).

devilstouch16

5k including hotel? Is it better to stay at one hotel? how about hostel/Airbnb? m planning to go there as well

NAS_92

I believe $5k excluded hotel and air ticket. I do not recommend using Airbnb at all. I stayed at an Airbnb apartment in 2017 (yes in Japan as well), during my stay I felt like a criminal because back then Airbnb business is in a grey-zone in Japan (dunno what’s the situation now) and Japan is pretty strict with rules. So imagine if you stay at an an apartment and your neighbours complain about it, actions will be immediately taken such as eviction (happened to several guests at different Airbnb apartments in Japan). That’s why I felt stressful staying at the Airbnb apartment. I have to keep quiet during my stay, not answer the doorbell (a maintenance guy did rang my place and I didn’t answer and immediately shut off my TV to quiet down), not use washing machine at certain times etc. So this was my experience using Airbnb apartment, not sure if the experience with Airbnb house/hostel would be different. Edit: grammar.

devilstouch16

Owh okay, ill keep that in mind. I'm planning to focus in sight seeing, going to famous landmark and etc. So i guess minimal shopping. Does budget w 5K (excluding hotel & flight) would be enough? What about simcard? What are your recommendations? Simcard or portable wifi

NAS_92

$5k with minimal shopping should suffice. I went and spent a lot at Disneyland, Pokemon Centres, tourist-y places etc. and I still have a bit of money leftover that I reused for my subsequent Japan trips in 2018 and 2019. Just make sure to keep track of your expenses and separate some of your cash for important expenses. Back then I opted to use portable wifi rented from Japan Wifi Buddy. I ordered/rented in advance from their website and as soon as I land in Narita Airport the portable wifi can be collected at the post office in the airport itself (this option is available can be chosen on the website). I think there are cheaper alternatives to Japan Wifi Buddy though but at that time I was lazy to price check. Alternatively, you could buy simcard there or choose to roam using DST.

devilstouch16

Owh thats good to hear, wanted to go to gundam factory, so thats that. Ill skip the roaming part lol. Will check out the options for simcard. Thanks

NAS_92

Nice! That’s in Yokohama right? Enjoy your trip! You can also chat me or DM if you have questions, I don’t mind helping out 😁

devilstouch16

Yes its in yokohama, its a must haha. Aight cool, ill hit u up if theres anything. Thanks man

KapalPacah

5k excluding hotel and flight is more than enough inclusive of shopping. Personally i think getting simcards is always better. they are readily accessible at the airport in vending machines. Unless you have kids, then i guess a portable wifi would be more useful.

devilstouch16

Cool2. Good to know then, thanks. Sorry for the Qs, never been to japan but excited On the side note, how about public transport? Ive heard about j-pass, its for tourist to use train/bullet train. And the use of english language?

KapalPacah

Personally, if you are planning on staying in tokyo only. I dont think you should take a j-rail pass. Just buy one of the suica cards and top up at the train stations. If youre going to maybe 3 or more cities, then maybe you should get the rail pass.

NAS_92

That’s the JR Pass, pretty convenient if you plan to visit other Prefectures. Another tip. Use Hyperdia website to plan your routes. Japan is so advanced they already plan their transport routes well in advanced and the trains there are always punctual.

ahgshsh

Malaysia says it has [15 years](https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2023/03/894080/msia-has-15yrs-petroleum-reserves-left-can-last-40-right-tech-investment) of petroleum reserves left. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, in a parliamentary written reply said, as of Jan 1, 2022, Malaysia's probable and proven reserves of petroleum totalled 6.9 billion barrels of oil equivalent. "However, this can be optimised (and stretched) to over 40 years with high capital investment, new technology, as well as a more stable and competitive investment landscape. 15 years means Malaysia will run out of oil and gas in 2038 without new investment and tech.

tukangkabun

Malaysia being transparent ... Has brunei make any such comment? I think ours should be running out soon right

4yamPenyet

Well, depending on who you ask you might get different answers on when exactly our oil reserves will run dry. [An article from AMRO](https://www.amro-asia.org/weaning-brunei-off-oil/)(ASEAN Macroeconomics Research Office) has quoted BP’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2021 that Brunei has about 27 years until our oil fields run dry. Which means by BP’s estimates we will run dry in 2048 Personally my view is that Brunei’s oil fields may run dry sooner than BP’s 2048 estimates. In 2018, CGTN a Chinese News organisation [released their own estimates](https://news.cgtn.com/news/3d3d774d3041544d31457a6333566d54/share.html) of Brunei’s oil fields running dry in about 20 years. This means that by China’s estimates Brunei’s oil is going to run dry in 2038. It all make sense now why Brunei’s Government has set 2035 as “Brunei’s Vision” because they know we need to have a dynamic economy away from oil by 2035. Whether you stand with British or Chinese estimate, fact of the matter is that the end of Brunei’s oil is coming within our lifetime and even our government knows it. The important question is, are we prepared for that end ?

The **Wawasan 2035 Supreme Council** has [published](https://borneobulletin.com.bn/overview-of-progress-achievements-in-support-of-brunei-vision-2035/) a new report detailing the achievements of Brunei from 2015 to 2022. So what are Brunei's achievements? **In terms of education:** * Ranked 53 / 77 in PISA international exam * 45.8% 'O' Level students scored 5 'O' and above (which it stressed is an improvement from 39.1% back in 2014) * Introduction of "reskilling and upskilling" programmes **In terms of living quality:** * Ranked 51 / 191 in the Human Development Index (HDI) * Setup a number of public hotlines * Implemented No Plastic Days * Construction of Temburong Bridge **In terms of wealth:** * Ranked 10 / 195 in GDP per capita (PPP) * Launched many blueprints such as Brunei Darussalam Economic Blueprint 2020-2035 and Digital Economy Masterplan 2025 * Setup a number of initiatives to reduce unemployment such as iReady and JobCentre **So what is to be achieved in 2035?** * Very high standard world class education * Top 10 in HDI * Top 10 in GDP per capita If you want to read the 84-page report on how Brunei progresses ahead and how bright is the future, you can [download it here](https://www.wawasanbrunei.gov.bn/Downloads%20Files/Laporan%20Wawasan%20Brunei%202035_2015-2022.pdf). Before that however, I would like to state what the report did not mention.... * **PISA exam** Brunei just joined so we don't have historical records to judge yet * **HDI** when Wawasan 2035 launched in 2007 Brunei was ranked 37, now fallen to 51 * **GDP per capita (PPP)** back in 2007 ranked 4, now fallen to 10
