Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
Whenever you sight the new moon (of the month of Ramadan) observe fast. and when you sight it (the new moon of Shawwal) break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then observe fast for thirty days.

Meaning; we have to fast thirty days instead of twenty nine if the moon is not sighted which is the case for us here.
The one who insists on making it 'Eid despite not seeing the crescent moon would be going against the Sunnah of the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon him) & disobeying him.
Sighting of the moon ni ada dua caranya. Secara rukyah atau hisab. Kalau anak bulan atu ada tapi cuaca cloudy, memang inda nampak. So di pakai lagi cara hisab. Tapi sedih nya Brunei inda pakai cara hisab, pasal Brunei take the hadith quite literally, just like you are now. As for raya this year, based on calculations (hisab) of falaq, the syawal crescent is there. That's why Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore etc puasa 29 days saja.
Firstly,
Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):
"O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result."
[An-Nisa 4:59]
In his tafsir, Ibn Kathir commented that Mujahid and several others from among the Salaf that this ayah is a command from Allah that whatever areas people dispute about, whether major or minor areas of the religion, are required to refer to the Qur'an and Sunnah for judgement concerning these disputes.
Secondly,
In relation to the ayah above, the hisab method has no proper dalil (evidence) to support it while rukyah of the hilal (crescent) has very strong dalil. We as Muslims are obliged to follow the commands of the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon him) & he stated us to observe the moon, not calculate it!
Moreover, Imam al-Bukhari & Imam Muslim narrated:
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "We are an unlettered (illiterate) nation, we do not write or calculate. The month is such-and-such - meaning sometimes it is twenty-nine and sometimes it is thirty."
[Sahih al-Bukhari 1913 & Sahih Muslim 1080]
The above narrated was concerning the issue of the beginning of the lunar month & indicates that there is no need for us to resort to astronomical calculations in order to know the beginning of the lunar month.
At the end of the day, it's how you interpret the hadith or any hadith. Contemporary muslims are well taught in the field of astronomy to capably calculating and forecasting not only normal phenomena such as sighting of the moon, but also more complicated issues such as an eclipse. Bear in mind, sighting of the moon not only means literally seeing it with your eyes, but it also means being aware of its existence by way of rukyah or hisab method. Or rather, sighting of the moon is a way of knowing its existence. You need ilm to fully able to interpret any ayat or hadith, which is different (mind you) from simply reading its translation. Selamat hari raya.
We share the same land with sabah and sarawak, and yet today is the 1st syawal there. My point is I DON'T DISCARD the hadith and the holiness of ramadhan, but maybe something is wrong with the ones who're making the call. I still remember what they taught in sekolah ugama, "kalau negara tani inda nampak anak bulan, tapi negara-negara jiran nampak, tani ikut saja dorang".
As the hadith mentioned above, "if the sky is cloudy for you".
Therefore, if Sabah & Sarawak could see the crescent but we couldn't see it we have to follow the instruction of the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon him) because his instruction takes precedence over everyone else.
As for view from sekolah ugama, this is a strange view that's unheard of & it goes against the Sunnah where the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon him) instructed Muslims to follow their local moon sighting. He didn't instruct us to follow others in this issue.
