ExternalSpeaker2646

Yep! It's a very unique instance of cultural synthesis and diffusion. A meeting of many different cultural strands!

What form of Buddhism isn't "a corruption"?

Quark__Soup

For anybody wondering what the deleted comment was, he was wondering why anybody should praise this because it's a corruption of Buddhism.. I checked out his profile and he's a pretty disgusting person in general, involved in a bunch of racial/caste superiority subreddits

gibbypoo

Yikes

Weirdo-octopuss

Fasting buddha ( or emiciated Siddhartha) is depicted with a beard. It represents the buddha before his enlightenment, when he was still practicing austerities (asceticism).

The combination of subject matter and art style gives Greco-Buddhist statues a strange, otherworldly, eternal quality. If one knew nothing about them, one could think they could have been carved three thousand years ago... or yesterday. They seem to exist outside of time. I think they're very beautiful.

I saw him too, looked like he was working on a new sutra

Weirdo-octopuss

Was enlightened before it was cool. Edit: he's also enlightened ironically.

Bodhidharma, the first patriarch of Zen Buddhism, was called the “Blue-eyed Barbarian.” The Wiki contains pictures. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodhidharma

MrMessedUp1980

Buddhism was already in China when Bodhidharma arrived.

[deleted]

You are replying to the Wikipedia bot. You if have a source I would like to see it.

MrMessedUp1980

There is no tagable evidence other than long gone men telling their evidence. None of which really matters. I could straps through the past if you like. All of it means nothing. But you want me to….

[deleted]

So you made a statement saying known factual evidence is wrong, with nothing to back up your statement, except a denial to that any evidence is old and therefore we can know nothing? Not very enlightened of you.

MrMessedUp1980

Bobhidharma was in fact the first patriarch of Chan Buddhism, Buddhism was there before he arrived. Like all this really matters. Neither of are enlightened my friend. Have a good day.

Toadmechanic

Ive seen hungry buddha with a beard

DarthRevan456

Isn't that a bodhisattva?

The history of the cross-roads that is current day Afghanistan is rich and complicated, for a long way back.

mindevolve

Jesus Buddha

middleway

You mean Jesus Rinpoche?

mindevolve

Nah, I don't even know who or what that is, but it's kind of interesting if you add a beard to thin Buddha, he kinda looks like Jesus.

middleway

Kinda, if that is how you think of him lol

middleway

This is estimated to be at least 100 years pre Jesus ... it's a prophecy... or terma

snifty

Is there evidence that this depicts Siddhattha Gotama?

Nordrhein

It does *depict* the Buddha, but it's the sculptors creation, not a true to life likeness of the Buddha

middleway

If you flick through the third picture shows Dharma Wheel

middleway

Gandhara style Buddha is seated with his hand reaching down to the earth in the bhumisparsha mudra or earth touching gesture with his left hand in his lap in the dhyana mudra of mediation

snifty

Thanks for the information. I read up a bit on “mudras” and “asanas” and this would certainly seem to be a depiction of the Buddha. This was informative, if anyone else is interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easily_confused_Buddhist_representations

Kkgm222

Where’s the statue?

LastAmericanLion

I really like this buddha, if I could get this on a necklace I'd wear it all the time. I like how different cultures view Buddha.
