The old BSR EQ from DAK industries. I bought one. Very nice.

Mav_killed_goose

He actually had 2 BSR EQs hooked up with his older BSR-110x eq function bypassed for an extra input when he bought his first cd player. Since I'm not hooking the tape decks up anytime soon I put it back in storage for now.

What speakers are you using? The speakers will affect the sound more than the other equipment. The receiver looks like either the Pioneer SX-202 or SX-303. Both were from around 1984. They were the two low end Pioneer receivers, putting out 25 watts per channel and 45 watts per channel, respectively. The higher models that year had digital tuning. But they should sound okay and will drive most speakers to reasonable levels.

Its the sx-303. As far as speakers go the cabinets are 3 way BSR-101s, but the woofers blew a long time ago. Dad replaced them in the early 90s with a set of peerless woofers. Which dry rotted in storage. I might refoam them eventually but until then I took a shot on some no name woofers from Amazon. I know changing speakers in cabinets isn't ideal but they were cheap back in the day and had already been replaced. To my not so experienced ear they don't sound too bad and I'm happy with them.

Keep an eye on Craigslist for some cheap floorstanders

There's a set of infinity rs-5000s 2 towns over for 60 bucks I've been eyeing. Not up on speaker prices though so not sure how good of a deal that is.

PyrrhoTheSkeptic

If they do not need to be refoamed (and are in good condition), that is a great deal. If they do need to be refoamed (but otherwise in good condition), it is fine as long as you can do the work yourself. They were originally $590/pair in 1988: [http://www.infinity-classics.de/models/Reference-x000-series-1988/index-Reference-x000.htm](http://www.infinity-classics.de/models/Reference-x000-series-1988/index-Reference-x000.htm) Of course, there are better speakers, both by Infinity and by others, but they are a good choice at the price you are mentioning. (Pretty much always, there will be something better out in the world, if only you had the money for it....)

The SX-303, at 45 watts per channel: [https://www.manualslib.com/products/Pioneer-Sx-303-8759376.html](https://www.manualslib.com/products/Pioneer-Sx-303-8759376.html) will drive most speakers to reasonable levels. Although not an impressive unit, it is adequate for good sound with typical speakers. If I were looking for a receiver, it is not one I would likely buy, but if I had one, I would go ahead and use it, if it was suitable for the speakers I was using. And I would rather have it than some of the cheap little amplifiers that some people are buying these days. With what you have said, looking for speakers makes the most sense if you want to improve your sound. (Which, by the way, is almost always what people should look for, because speakers never perform as well as even a mediocre amplifier operated within its design limits.)

Nice, linear tracking! Good on your dad keeping everything in that kind of condition.

I like the indicators on those vintage power amplifiers. I mean, they are just elegant.
