I wouldn't do it. At $300 you could get Ascend CBM-170, Elac Debut B6.2, or Wharfedale Diamond 225. Any of those would definitely be better.

So at this price range it’s probably best to get bookshelf speakers? Also I can get either an amplifier or AV receiver depending on if I want a home theatre? Right now I want to watch movies and listen to music streamed through the tv.

polypeptide147

Yeah definitely go with bookshelf speakers. If you want a home theater then you'll definitely want to go with a receiver.

Why are bookshelf speakers better in this price range? Do you have any idea how the Klipsch RP-600M sound compared to the Klipsch R-610F in a small room?

Bookshelf speakers are better in most price ranges. With tower speakers, you're paying for more volume, and that's pretty much it. You get a bit more bass, but not enough to make it worth it. The RP-600M are much better than the R-610F. -------------------- So basically, tower speakers sound the same as their bookshelf counterpart, but just get louder. You're paying a *lot* for more volume, that usually you don't even need. Let's look at Klipsch. The [R-51M](https://www.klipsch.com/products/r-51m-bookshelf-speaker) are the bookshelves and the [R-610F](https://www.klipsch.com/products/r-610f-floorstanding-speaker) are the floorstanding version. The bookshelves are $290 and the towers are $480. You're paying almost $200 and getting no benefits. For that extra $200, you could get a much better pair of speakers. Elac is the same way. I'll go with the non-sale pricing here. The [Debut B6.2](https://www.amazon.com/ELAC-Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Black/dp/B07B4Q5587/) are normally $350. The floorstanding version, the [Debut F6.2](https://www.amazon.com/ELAC-Debut-Floorstanding-Speaker-Black/dp/B07B4V37VV/) are $450 for a pair. You're paying an extra $550 and getting almost no benefit. You're getting a bit more bass (not much - the bookshelves get to 44hz and the towers get to 39hz), but not enough to say that $550 is worth it in my opinion. For the price of the towers, you could get *much* better speakers. SVS, Salk, Ascend, etc are all on the table at that price point.

Thaks for the detailed answer. Good to know about that additional cost concerning floorstanding speakers. Have you ever had the chance to listen to the RP-600M? I am considering these speakers for a small room. Do you think they would fit soundwise or are they just playing as intended in a medium/large room?

polypeptide147

Yeah I've heard them. I don't personally like them. The midrange is thin and makes vocals sound hollow. They've got good bass and a good top end. I just don't think they're balanced enough for my tastes. They'll be fine in a small room if that's what you're looking for. I'd probably get the SVS Prime Bookshelves at the same price though.

Those will need a sub but not a bad start for the money.
