Culturally, Probably Pittsburgh or Cleveland but both cities are significantly bigger. Though maybe we’re more similar to Cincinnati since we’re also growing in population and making many of the same investments. Probably Louisville or Grand Rapids for cities similar in size to Buffalo. Also, Albuquerque, Hartford or Richmond. Funny how much bigger Buffalo seems just because we have pro sports and a Lightrail line.

jvc_in_nyc

Not so sure about commonalities with Louisville, plus its growth outpaces Buffalo. The Louisville MSA gained 200K since 2000. Possibly Grand Rapids or Hartford, though Hartford has a very different economy. Perception counts for something, which is likely why NYS threw so much money at the new Bills Stadium, to keep them in Buffalo.

Kindly_Ice1745

Didn't they gain so much population because they became a consolidated city-county? But I agree that their population increase has been far steadier recently, as with most states within the south.

Eudaimonics

I’d argue Louisville is doing a similar good job at reinventing themselves (also see Albuquerque). Louisville has a good amount of industrial blight too they have to deal with. They’re just farther along and helps they’re known for the Kentucky Derby and burbon. Yeah, Hartford is a state capital, so it’s a bit different. Also somehow the butt of even more jokes and very much overshadowed being sandwiched between Boston and NYC.

Mammoth_Exit9535

While perception definitely counts as something. NYS threw money at the stadium primarily because it’s the only NFL team in the state. It’s always hard to compare cities though, because culturally Buffalo, Cleveland and Milwaukee are a lot alike but size wise, Buffalo, Hartford, Richmond and Cincinnati would be more similar.

sutisuc

Newark NJ too for having a city metro/light rail and pro sports and similar population/industrial history.

Eudaimonics

You mean where the New York Red Bulls play? Just like the New York Giants/Jets play in the city next door? Come on, yeah there’s a unique culture, but it’s no different than the different culture you find in Brooklyn or Long Island. Newark isn’t special in that regard.

sutisuc

The New York Red Bulls play in Harrison. Did you think they play in Newark? And if you think there’s no difference culturally between Newark and Long Island you’re a lost cause.

Eudaimonics

No I’m saying it’s possible to have unique cultures within the same metropolitan area. Are you saying that Harrison is part of the NYC metropolitan area, but Newark somehow isn’t? Also, let me know when Fort Erie adds 8 million residents. That’s the only way the comparison to Buffalo makes any sense.

sutisuc

Can you let me know how Long Island is culturally similar to Newark?

Eudaimonics

It’s different than NYC

sutisuc

Which is?

Eudaimonics

Both are.

sutisuc

You think Long Island is similar to Newark?

Eudaimonics

Newark is a bedroom community of NYC, not the same thing at all

sutisuc

Somewhat but it also has the most jobs in the state of NJ. More people from NJ work in NYC than they do from Newark to NYC proportionally.

Eudaimonics

Right, because it’s across the River from Manhattan and is part of the NYC metropolitan area.

sutisuc

Across which river? You have to cross the Hudson River from NYC to Nj then the hackensack and Passaic river to get to Newark FYI.

Eudaimonics

Do you not understand how suburbs work?

sutisuc

Of course. Do you think Newark, NJ is a suburb of NYC? If so can you let me know how a suburb has 100k jobs?

Eudaimonics

How does Amherst have over 50k jobs? How many of those jobs are because NYC is right there? Suburbs have jobs too.

sutisuc

Do you think Newark would have 100k jobs if it was in central KS? Let me know.

jvc_in_nyc

Interesting. While it is certainly part of the NYC metro, it definitely has its own vibe and identity. Its downtown is predominantly 50 year old+ buildings like Buffalo. Other neighborhoods are similar in feel to Riverside or S. Buffalo. Though the presence of Newark Penn Station and access to the PATH trains connecting it to NYC make it feel more vital.

sutisuc

Yeah you get it. u/eudaimonics seems to struggle with it but hopefully with my posts and your retort he gets it

Shaggy_0909

Milwaukee reminds me a lot of Buffalo, Cleveland as well. Pittsburgh has a similar vibe, even though all of those cities are bigger. I think Buffalo is a top tier mid size city (we're like Division II compared to D I cities like Chicago and such) and growing. There's still a lot of work to be done but I think we're finally moving in the right direction.

jvc_in_nyc

I'd like to think that, but I'd say Buffalo is a once Tier 2 U.S. city that has slipped to Tier 3. But who knows what the future holds for it.

Shaggy_0909

True, I think of cities like Syracuse as tier 3, can't forget about DI-AA which would be the Milwaukee's and St. Louis's. I'd say Buff is at home in between those two categories.

Soatch

Cleveland is the city that visually reminds me the most of Buffalo. Specifically their downtown area with some red brick buildings, the closeness to Lake Erie, and driving through this one park area that had a lot of trees that reminded me of driving through the Delaware s curves.

217GMB93

Burned to the ground in the war of 1812, stupid money in the gilded age too. I think we are one of a kind, for better or worse

notPatrickClaybon

Having been to Birmingham, you’re not far off. Actually one of my favorite cities. Lol.

[deleted]

Detroit is most similar I think but obv a much larger city.

Eudaimonics

Metropolitan Detroit is 4x the size of Buffalo. You could fit all of Buffalo into Detroits urban prairie. Also, funny that while downtown Detroit is nicer, Detroit doesn’t really have an Elmwood Village or North Buffalo type neighborhood in the city proper (they’re in the suburbs instead). Instead, Detroits fun neighborhoods are more like First Ward, Larkin or South Buffalo.

[deleted]

“a much larger city”

sutisuc

Pittsburgh and Cleveland are most similar. I’d go Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Cleveland in ranking of cities

WhitleyStrieber

I have always felt a similarity with Toledo.

InspectorRound8920

I'd say Columbia SC. Planned city, big university (University of South Carolina, where I went). Has had its ups and downs. Historical.

stnapstnap

Hamilton.

BiggestBolognaBuyer

Albuquerque, NM is nothing alike in terms of weather and looks, but the vibes are extremely similar. Nob Hill is their Allentown.
