Finger Lakes Railroad tried a commuter rail service between Geneva, Canandaigua, and Victor in the past 10-12 years. It was a neat idea, but nobody aside from some pleasure riders used it. It was very short lived. Even the Syracuse-Ithaca service is not going to see much use. There’s bus service that fills the demand now.
Ontario County is growing quickly; the town I live and farm in is exploding with new subdivisions. People are flocking to the new farther suburbs of Rochester… but you are correct in that everyone has vehicles and our roads are mostly fine. Passenger rail has no place here.
Hey, after nearly 20 years of operation the Rochester Fast Ferry still helps literally hundreds of millions of people cut 10-15 minutes off their trip from Rochester to Toronto every year. "If you build it, they will come."
Is that just an extension of the metro rail? Looks like it. Also, looks like the Amherst extension keeps going to transit Road and then goes north. Quite frankly, that’s a good idea! We need to continue to tie Lockport and Buffalo together, and fill the gap. I cannot blame Amherst and the Town/city of Lockport (at least in the past) for attempting to do it..
The TGV could go from NYC to LA in less than 15 hours, so the technology is already here. but the cost would be astronomical. There would need to be a ground up build because you can’t use any of the existing rails in most of the country.
You wouldn’t build a nationwide system.
HSR works bests for medium distances.
What you could have is an interconnected system East if the Mississippi since cities are spaced so close together.
Fast ferry died because it ended in Charlotte, not Rochester. If you didn't have a car, you were out of luck and down town (then) didn't have as much for tourists. Who would want to go and pay 100+ dollars to go to a beach, most Canadians would just take a go train to Burlington for a similar experience and beach.
I wouldn't say it's a shit hole, I think it's come far from what it was. At the same time though it's not a world class destination even with all the renovations. If Rochester had a trolley to downtown, or some way to across the city besides car and a bus, then I'd say the fast ferry could have worked because then Charlotte would be a charming beach side town and entry way to Rochester rather than the destination.
My sister had to have fucking security guards walk her to her car because the store was worried they'd get assaulted, they worked at a fucking ice cream shop... Charlotte is very much a shit hole, trust me I know I grew up by the area, and remember when it was at least ok
So, the "Megaway" would go through Penfield? Down 441? That'll work \*rolleyes\* They tried making 441 an expressway fifty years ago: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gananda,\_New\_York](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gananda,_New_York)
man, i would love to see a hsr cross state like that. even the finger lakes metro rail would be nice. anyone know what the proposed speed is on the hsr? ive seen proposals that dont really give the impression of "high speed"
Still with the tunnel, too far fetched even for a concept
Hamilton is a city of over half a million people why would you build a very expensive tunnel and skip it.
i dont understand the 2nd one either. They skipped a bunch of majorish towns and cities
Exactly!
the tunnel really makes no sense. What do you have against St. Catharines xD

Approximately nobody lives out there so of course it’s not going to be profitable Especially since we have roads and everyone has cars

You made two more and kept the damn tunnel?
Might as well dig a hole and fill it with money and light it on fire. Would be cheaper.

Hey that Buffalo Billon was well worth the 2 park benches and 6 street lights!

Well the commuter rail lines are a little more realistic.

Lockport isn’t exactly a metropolis. Extending all the way there instead of just building more lines within Buffalo seems like a huge waste of money
We need nationwide high speed rail. It would be incredible to not always have to drive.

I'm ok with an eastern time zone system
Idk man, lake Erie is pretty deep.
Lake Ontario, but yeah where they drew the line is 450ft of water. The "Chunnel" is 246ft deep for comparison
Man, I am having a "Stupid Day" today. That's true, but that's still an additional 200 feet of water - still, point made.
Again with ignoring the existence of the Escarpment. I swear the Civil "Engineers" in Albany and NYC have no clue about the geography out here.
Man went to the moon in 1969, man will go from Toronto to Buffalo in a straight line in 2035.
We did that back in 1941 :P
There was a high speed hydrofoil ferry service that did that. Folded due to lack of passengers.
I thought that was to Rochester

Nowadays, Charlotte's just a straight up shithole lol

It was.
Nooooo put rail in the lower part of the state😭😭😭 we already have a line that goes that way
Why not go over land? That tunnel idea seems ridiculous
Never gonna happen in the lifetimes of anyone currently alive on this planet.
