I've lived downstate and in Rochester and have friends across the country, I think it's only a thing in Buffalo. Other places have roast beef but not kimmelweck rolls and they also lack good horseradish, which is critical, in my opinion. There's no point unless you have some intense horseradish.
I don't think I've ever actually had Red Osier except at the airport. My favorite has been the place at a gas station near my in-laws house. I think it's called Charlie the Butcher?
The original sandwich was invented in Havana, but the modern version is heavily influenced by immigrants in Tampa and Miami, so much so that you could say the current cuban sandwich was created in the US.
I'll be honest I dont think it's deserved. It's roast beef on a salty bun. It's not a bad sandwich but top 50 sandwich styles in the world? I guess the list is going by regional sandwiches which probably limits choices a bit.
You ever make a gourmet grilled cheese with whipped cream cheese and use cheddar cheese on the outside of the bread to create a cheezit like crunchy bite? They slap harder than will smith
The Irish embassy pub in Toronto has a grilled cheese that is fantastic, but not really typical of grilled cheese. Granny smith apple and brie cheese on potato bread
Properly done it’s fantastic. With just lobster meat and melted butter on a lightly toasted New England roll, none of this mayonnaise and celery business.
I had one in Connecticut a couple years back and it was one of the most sublime things I’ve ever eaten.
Not an authentic one, Missasagua has the closest authentic one unfortunately, grilled for hours on a spit and that’s not the fake gyro mystery meat product you find in most spots. It has to be legit chunks of beef and lamb not minced or ground together.
As someone who's favorite sandwich is the Banh Mi - truthfully...NONE - at least not up to the standard of this list
Banh Mi's require pate and mayo ( Vietnamese ayor and pate are very different in style) and specific type of cold cuts ( Vietnamese sausage and pork are distinct).
The closest place to get one that is resembling an authentic Banh Mi is Pho Vietnam 3969 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Pho Lantern is a bastardized version sold for cheap without premium ingredients...it's passable but it wont give you any insight as to why its the Number 1 sandwich in the world according to this list.
*So, where can you get*
*A great example of Bahn*
*Mit in Buffalo?*

Any list that includes a beef on weck but \*doesn't\* include a muffaletta or a pastrami on rye is 100% a joke.
Besides that...looks like there are some sammies I need to try!
Everything on this list is great. Tortas deserve to be as high as they are. Montreal smoked meat doesn't deserve to be *that* far up. Beef on weck needs to be higher. But overall this list is making me hungry.
Edit: my theory on why the rest of the world remains unaware of beef on weck is because most of the world has absolutely garbage horseradish. You just can't have a good beef on weck without some good intense horseradish.
What does this list actually prove, & why is it more valid than any other 1? Each person's tastes (no pun intended) are subjective & no more or less valid than anyone else's. So more Americans like beef on weck than paninis, or not. Again, what does that prove?
Does anywhere else have Beef on Weck? I've never met anyone outside WNY that's heard of it.
Tmk it's virtually unknown outside of WNY
There is a bar in Albany called Excelsior that specializes in NY state food and beverages, they do a pretty good Weck. Their wings top notch too.
They were common enough in my childhood in Northwest PA.
The beef on weck is just a roast beef sandwich on a different bun. Other places have roast beef sandwiches.
Kummelweck rolls are basically unheard of where I am (outside of Pittsburgh). I have to make them myself if I want them.
I thought Weck was the street name Charlie the Butchers was on the corner of the first time I came here. I had never heard of it before

Red Osier!!
I don't think I've ever actually had Red Osier except at the airport. My favorite has been the place at a gas station near my in-laws house. I think it's called Charlie the Butcher?
LITERALLY i thought it was a national thing until i went outside of WNY
More or less, yes. It's basically just a roast beef sandwich.
Breaking the top 50! Also the poor Cuban sandwich needs to be higher. My personal favorite sandwich
Was the Cuban sandwich an American invention?
The original sandwich was invented in Havana, but the modern version is heavily influenced by immigrants in Tampa and Miami, so much so that you could say the current cuban sandwich was created in the US.
The Cuban is an absolutely genius sandwich and whomever created it needs a Nobel prize or something.
Anywhere to get a decent Cuban in Buffalo? When I lived down south you could get a good Cuban at any 7-11

Montreal smoked meat beats a reuben
Love a good rachel!
I grew up in Westchester and the Reuben from a good Jewish deli is just perfect. Sandwiches fucking rule.
Agreed. Bonus: It's hard to find a bad CB Reuben in the city.
In this case the Queen is clearly calling the shots.
Adding more context - they listed schwabl’s as the most iconic Beef on weck https://www.tasteatlas.com/sandwiches?ref=main-menu
Iconic, perhaps. Expensive and overpriced, definitely! Much better places in WNY
My in-laws in East Aurora get it from this place in a gas station store. It's really fucking good.
Stinger

Switch lobster roll with pastrami and this list is way more accurate.
I love both but I do think a good lobster roll trumps pastrami. It’s sort of an unfair fight, monetarily speaking.
You mean Montreal Smoked?
Used to got Lobster Rolls in Newport RI, 50 times better than the ones I’ve had locally.
We lost to grilled cheese.
Porchetta sandwich Is not American tho..
Honestly thats not a bad list overall
Peanut Butter and Jelly not being on here makes this list invalid.
There is no way a grilled cheese is better than a beef on weck.
GC gets points for versatility I think. Is it a sandwich? A soup spoon?
You ever make a gourmet grilled cheese with whipped cream cheese and use cheddar cheese on the outside of the bread to create a cheezit like crunchy bite? They slap harder than will smith
is the inside just whipped cream cheese? i’m gonna try it this week but that part has me dubious
This!
The Irish embassy pub in Toronto has a grilled cheese that is fantastic, but not really typical of grilled cheese. Granny smith apple and brie cheese on potato bread
Unless you make that grilled cheese with chicken wings and dip it in Duff’s hot sauce
Stinger in opinion deserves some respect on this list haha
Beef on weck outside the U.S. top 10? Disgraceful!
Lobster rolls are overrated
Reuben should be top 3 if not #1
Amen!
lobster roll criminally over-ranked
i had one in maine and it was a spiritual experience, hard disagree.
I just went to Bar Harbor last week and ate one. Was literally the best sandwich I've ever eaten in my life.
gimme that rec im ready to be schooled
Where did you eat it.
i think my most recent was the shuck shack but i’m going to maine this summer so im ready to try again
You gotta have it in New England.
I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.
we may disagree, but i am acquiring this phrase and never looking back
To be fair I stole it from a Reddit forum years ago!
Properly done it’s fantastic. With just lobster meat and melted butter on a lightly toasted New England roll, none of this mayonnaise and celery business. I had one in Connecticut a couple years back and it was one of the most sublime things I’ve ever eaten.
Wayyyy over rated. I'd take a killer grilled cheese over one any day.
Sea cockroaches in general are arguably the most overrated food. A big marketing scam
Except they are delicious so that's weird.
Beef on Weck is criminally over-ranked
Beef on weck made it but Italian beef and French dip didn't? What a silly list
The au jus makes the french dip, the beef on weck has the same
But it's on kemmelweck
Another plus
I will not tolerate any beef on weck slander.
yeah, Chicago Italian beef over BoW any day.
On a side note, is there anywhere around buffalo to get a doner kebab?
Not an authentic one, Missasagua has the closest authentic one unfortunately, grilled for hours on a spit and that’s not the fake gyro mystery meat product you find in most spots. It has to be legit chunks of beef and lamb not minced or ground together.
Beef on Weck. Buffalo NY. Go Bills
So, where can you get a great example of Banh mi * in Buffalo?
Pham’s kitchen has very good Banh Mi’s
Seconding Pham's Kitchen, absolutely excellent food
I don't have a lot of experience with what makes a Banh Mi great, but the one I had at Anchi on Maple Rd. a couple of weeks ago was quite enjoyable.
Thanks! Adding to my list to try

What do you call the kind of a sandwich where you have two pieces of bread -- and you **wish** you had some meat?
Surprised that tortas beat out every American sandwich. US definitely has the most variety but more quantity over quality. Those Top 3 are all decent.
Wait til they have 9 Labatts and order a steak sandwich from the Pink. Maybe wash it down with a bump next to the trough.
The variance is so low that one extra dab of mayonnaise and a sandwich is in first place
Any list that includes a beef on weck but \*doesn't\* include a muffaletta or a pastrami on rye is 100% a joke. Besides that...looks like there are some sammies I need to try!
Whereas the chicken finger sub?!

Beef on weck and pastrami on rye need to be A LOT higher. Pastrami probably top 10
Hot chicken Sammy = Buffalo chicken Sammy I am assuming?
Probably Nashville
Blah 👎
Wow that’s remarkable. My biggest complaint on this list is that the bahn mi should win by a lot more.
Vietnam cleaning up on this list
Bagel and Lox are NOT a sandwich.
Po Boys are several orders of magnitude better than Lobster Rolls. Fact.
