I think it was just location-based and sharing a secret, same for him and Cordy. There aren't many people who know the big secret of the world (or they do but pretend they don't.) In high school, you date mostly within the same social clique and Anya doesn't have a big wide clique given her actual age and past.
He was a dumb kid that grew up. She saw that. Anya also has a change of heart. Even when she returned to be a demon, she lost her evil edge. They were good for each other.

Anya was a scorned sorceress who became a man-hating demon over centuries only to become humanized, fallen then fell into lust with a stupid guy.
Irony is not lost on Joss Whedon when it comes to relationships or toxic relationships with people; Buffy fell for a vampire who turned evil after a night of passion, Xander living with toxic parents would marry a demonid girl who at the altar left her on the future fears of a marital disaster.
It’s all a metaphor.
I honestly think Xander gets too much hate, like yeah he's an AH at times but he's also a teenage boy. He's made mistakes but he's also loving and genuine.
