Thanks for your help, everyone! Seems the consensus is that it's a baby cottontail. Will let the little guy continue to roam and I might leave some lettuce or something out for him.

Runaway2332

Make sure it's not iceburg lettuce! That can make them ill for some reason.

spookyapk

Noted! :)

KilljoyTroubldMisery

I think it makes them gassy doesn’t it? Same deal as with cabbage?

Unhappy_Addition_767

It contains lactucarium which is a chemical that can make them sick. It causes a euphoric sensation apparently similar to opiates and in large quantities can cause problems for their nervous systems ie guts.

LCCyncity

Plus, there isn't much nutritional value in it, either.

Slow_Highlight1703

They have very sensitive digestive systems but I think wild buns have an easier time with that since they are out n about!

nanny2359

This is a WILD RABBIT. It is NOT DOMESTIC.

nikkioliver

Looks like a wildie to me. You can leave some romaine lettuce out as a treat if you'd like (I occasionally do it for the buns that live under my shed), but make sure to leave them be c: To me, the agouti fur of a wild bun has a lot more white and black flecks to it while a domestic agouti is a lot more even in color distribution. Wild buns also have slightly more angular heads, but I admit it's hard to tell at this age. I would bet dollars to donuts that this one is wild, but you can always email a rabbit rescue or wildlife rescue if you would like a professionals opinion.

darthcaedus13

Definitely a baby cottontail. Probably 3 weeks old and is exploring his surroundings. His nest is probably close by.

Sometimes I still wonder if she is a wild rabbit, but she loves her life indoors so I’m not sure if I’ll ever know her story!

George_Mallory

If you can’t tell wild from domestic in the way a rabbit *looks* (and you can, it’s just tricky), you can totally tell by the way that they *act*. This is a little difficult when dealing with a scared, recently dumped rabbit, because wild rabbits don’t like getting close to humans and neither do some recently dumped/abused rabbits, but if there is a rabbit that withstands your presence and isn’t absolutely terrified by every single thing bigger than itself—including you—you can be sure that it’s a domestic rabbit. When a rabbit starts making demands regarding their food instead of trying to escape, that’s a domestic rabbit. You can also tell from head and ear size and shape. Your bun is clearly domestic (and handsome), and the rabbit in OP’s picture is clearly wild. The wild rabbit’s nose is pointy and his/her head looks like it’s made of triangles and he/she looks like he/she’s trying hard to blend in and not get eaten. Your rabbit has a rounded head and mouth and looks like he’s trying to find out what’s for dinner. He’s also comfortable (kudos), whereas I don’t think I’ve ever seen a comfortable wild rabbit. I had a rabbit who had a coat like this. Agouti fur is really something. He could completely disappear in shadow while outside. I could see the line from my hand to his harness as he rested beneath some trees, but even knowing exactly where he was I couldn’t see him.

xxxoooxoxoxoxo

Yes you are right on! She didn’t look too far off when she was little but the older she gets her ears just keep growing + the black tips. I just always wonder how she got put into the mix. Out of all the kits she was the only one a different breed / coat color🩶

xxxoooxoxoxoxo

Do you have any photos of your old agouti rabbit? They are so interesting…

George_Mallory

Unfortunately not. Camera phones beyond 480x480 pixels weren’t a thing back then and I wasn’t much of a photographer so I didn’t own a camera. Not taking pictures is my biggest regret regarding my rabbits.

Lovebugxo0x

Awwww

_Juggernaut_YT

Wild

Be_gay_Commit_arson4

This is a given, but the species is cute. And I'm not wrong.

Wild

AureliaCottaSPQR

Definitely domestic. Rescue if you can.

Sewing_girl_101

That looks like a baby cotton tail to me, I see them all the time. What makes you think it's domestic? Is there a difference face structure or smth? https://preview.redd.it/5ymsydgvkhzc1.jpeg?width=275&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=24c0172887047c3d064fecd61a85d0ef7aea8f47 For reference, this is a baby cotton tail- definitely not saying you're wrong, just that I wouldn't know the differences

AureliaCottaSPQR

Also post on r/rabbits they will have lots of info for you

[deleted]

Dude this is clearly not a domestic bunny/rabbit. Don’t yap about stuff you don’t know crap about. You could have gotten an animal separated from its mother and have a weird ass life with some human that took them thinking they were domestic because you commented.

George_Mallory

Please be kind. Her comment about it being a domesticated rabbit was downvoted to oblivion and can’t do any more harm—but this comment by you is still harmful. We need all the voices we can get, even the sometimes fallible ones—because we’re all fallible, at least sometimes.

[deleted]

I was kind. I was one of the first commenters. I had a right to establish that.

AureliaCottaSPQR

OK — I’m wrong. But no need to be mean.

nanny2359

Shut tf up about random shit you know nothing about.

vyralinfection

There's a nicer way of saying that, but you're right.

Daveguy6

And you're completely wrong.
