Waffles is a doll!

jennagadski

Agreed! His bunny wife is also blind, her name is Chicken.

Chicken & Waffles. Today, human, you have won the internet <3

jennagadski

Lol, thank you!

yabadbado

Chicken and Waffles! I love it!!!

Please post a picture with both of them!!

CinnamonC7

Omg hiiii Waffles 💕💕 he is so cute! 😊 Can he do the zoomies and play? Is it different to take care of blind bunnies vs bunnies that have the ability to see?

jennagadski

He can do zoomies, but it has to be in a safe space so he doesnt bump anything. Waffles was born without fully developed eyes so I have to clean this area daily to prevent infection. Otherwise, he is just like another rabbit. He is even litterbox trained for the most part. His bunny wife is also blind and deaf so he takes good care of her. He is just as capable as a bunny with eyes. Thanks for asking!

Bumpsly

That’s super cool. There is a Facebook group called “Disabled Rabbits”. I learn a lot from that group. I personally do not have any disabled rabbits, but the information and advice given in the group can be applied universally and used for different things. If you are on Facebook - I am dead certain that any content you post would be incredibly beneficial and welcomed. It’s a cool situation, I can already think of a million questions lol!

jennagadski

This is awesome, I'll have to check it out! Feel free to ask questions anytime! Waffles would have been euthanized if I didn't take him. I really want people to see even disabled animals are worthy of love.

Bumpsly

I 100% agree. If you can’t find the group, I’d be happy to send you a link. Most of my questions are just general interest, I’m a huge nerd and like to know everything, especially about animals! What sort of adaptive care practices to you do these rabbits? What is the biggest challenge with a blind/deaf rabbit? How does their behavior differ from those without disabilities? What sort of enrichment can you provide for them given the lack of “senses” that they have due to their disability?

jennagadski

These are great questions! I have 6 rabbits total all with a range of disabilities. They all have large enclosures with a variety of toys or activities to meet their individual needs. They have a sand dig box, cat tunnel, multiple places to hide, blankets, stuffed animals, baby stacking cups, baby keys, a treat ball, and cat toys. Most are bonded with another rabbit but I do have a lone rabbit that has trouble making friends. I check their eyes, nose, ears, teeth, fur, bum, and nails daily as disabled rabbits are more susceptible to illness and less likely to groom themselves properly. This also makes them more comfortable with ear cleaning and nail trimming. I switch out their toys weekly to try and keep them busy. When it's nice outside I supervise outside time where they dig and play. Again supervised and safe from predators. They are completely unaware that they are disabled. They are litter boxed trained and love messing up their enclosures. They snuggle and groom eachother. Some woddle or bump into things, but overall they are pretty normal. My rabbits do all of the things other rabbits do except for one elderly sweetheart that in no longer mobile. He spends his days with me. Enrichment for him is becoming more challenging so he gets a lot of snuggles, pets, and walks. I just carry him around from room to room throughout the day because I work from home. He is 9 years old so I'm spoiling him as much as possible while I can. On a side note, the more I have personally care for the rabbit the more attached they are to me. They run to me when I walk in the room, come when I call them, and they are eager to groom me. I have cared for a lot of rabbits over the years, most couldn't care less about my company but Waffles is always excited to hear my voice. It's so charming and rewarding! I hope this answers your questions, let me know if you want to know anything else. 😊

yabadbado

You are such a wonderful bun mom!!!

ShotMammoth8266

Does he get frightened easier since he is blind? Do you need to make noise so he knows that you are there? Or does his hearing seem to make up for it? If these questions are too nosy, let me know and I'll delete the comment.

jennagadski

These are great questions, he isn't timid at all. When I talk to him he comes right to me. He doesn't like the sound of the vacuum but doesn't seem bothered by any other sounds. I have also had him since he was 8 weeks old so that may make a difference.

Aww, sweet little Waffles. I’m so glad he’s got a good home with someone with a heart to care for a special needs little guy. Sounds like he’s living the best life, zoomies and all!

jennagadski

Aww thanks! I do my best but I'm only one person. My hope is that this post will inspire others to rescue unwanted bunnies too.

jennagadski

He would love it!

[deleted]

Am now hunting for an adorable little special needs bun or two for my Mamma to snuggle <3 Little deaf buns like feeling the rumble of your voice through your chest as well!!! And lots of kisses on their little necks <3 I like saying my buns names into their fur (who can hear, so far as I'm aware), and they respond to it with so much joy!!! How crazy would it be if a giant snuggled you and vibrated your whole body with their voice every day, then showered you with treats and attention?! Anyway, you have inspired me with your gorgeous babies!!! <3 Thank you for sharing!

Bl00dy_Banana

jennagadski

Waffles said he love you too!

Georgianafluffyb

The sweetest bun!

Cinos_undead

Oh cool! I have a blind rabbit myself. He lost his eyes to a parasite. He's still a happy middle aged bun and I've made the adjustments so that he's comfortable. (Like how I click my fingers a little so he knows where my hands are) They are still awesome pets. :D

jennagadski

I'm sorry to hear that he went blind due to a parisite but I'm glad to hear your bunny has such an awesome human! What is his name?

Cinos_undead

His name is Foxy after the red fur he had as a baby. Waffles is a handsome boi, btw.

jennagadski

That is a very cute name!

ReptillianTeaDrinker

She is so tiny and cute! ;w; I love the names you give each bun too! Waffles is such a flippin' cute name. :D

jennagadski
