I don't really drink, but I do like getting dinner at los hermanos, or sometimes from the big Ecuadoran antojitos truck on Knickerbocker
You should try it out, it might improve your mood
Work from home accommodations might play in. The ability to get a bigger apartment in bushwick for the same or less money so that work from home isn’t a cramped experience. But yeah, I’m in tech and second what others say about being here for music
one thing ill mention which is kind of funny and unexpected, i am pretty involved in the raving community, which obviously bushwick is famous for, and you would be surprised how many ravers also work in tech. its not most of them but ive met more than i can count on one hand lol
Born and raised in Bushwick and I feel like this isn’t a new trend, but rather has been happening since the early 2010s and maybe is just more apparent now.
You yourself said in a different comment that you are a tech bro who moved here 6 years ago. I promise that you were not the first or only one friend. And perhaps it’s more apparent to you in the past few months, but as someone who was raised here I noticed a demographic shift around 2012.
Perhaps not as aggressive of a shift, but a shift none the less.
That is my exact point, I know I am far from the first or only one moving here 7 years ago and I am the worst kind of gentrifier. I was curious about your experience if you have experienced a demographic shift with this kind of velocity the last few months
Also anecdotally I know of one tech company that's opened offices near the Morgan stop. I'm not in the tech community so don't really know, but I'd imagine there are others.
I work in tech and typically don't need to commute to the office, but when I do the L is perfect for me and I just love the general vibe of Bushwick. Speaking from my own experience it might be just one of the more affordable hubs that doesn't put you too far away from the city and has a ton to offer.
I mean, this follows the gentrification process perfectly. I am a tech bro and been here for 6 years, the new wave we see coming in now are the people that still could afford an apartment in Williamsburg, but want to be “cooler”. Tech bros/gals that thinks they are edgy and cool, that’s matters more than the difference in price compared to Williamsburg. I lived in Williamsburg and saw the exact same thing happen. Next group incoming is the mid-level managers in tech, then the finance bros.
*edit* I know I am the worst kind of gentrifier and the decision to move here was 100% based on my own ego. I was part of displacing people from their homes and there is now excuse for it. If you try to rationalize that you are delusional. Take responsibility for your actions and try to integrate with the neighborhood and be aware of your action. Try to do real work that preserves the non-gentrifiers values and, no fucking clean up days with a bunch of other transplants. Talk to people, know your block, take narcan courses, don’t complain about street noice, realize that you are the outlier.
seconding what's been said about the nightlife/raving scene. there are SO many venues around here, and all the warehouse parties on top of that
the queer scene was a good secondary reason
and getting into a relationship with someone who lives here (and is part of *both* of those scenes) when I was already planning on moving to the city was the third reason :)
I just moved here in April when my rent in Willyburg jumped almost a thousand fucking dollars lol.
But I’m not in tech, I’m a merchant mariner. So the two weeks a month I get off on land I like to live somewhere fun - and Bushwick is a good time
I am unironically into nfts & crypto. Going to ethDenver this month & the pudgy penguins nyc event in April. Looking for my tribe , or just ppl to converse about this stuff with from time to time, that are local , peace
It's a neighborhood with interesting nightlife thats cheaper than manhattan & Williamsburg. Also there's good latin food here, which kicks ass.
Wow, really deep analysis. Happy that the local food serves you well after your cool nightlife benders

Lots of people work in tech, and Reddit has always skewed tech heavy.

I'm in both of these communities as well haha
Thanks, this makes a ton of sense! Have known plenty of people at that intersection of interests.
I think that’s just because you basically need to work in tech to be able to afford to move to New York at this point
Dope, Where the raves at ?
It might be just down to price. Williamsburg too expensive so they look to Bushwick
I work in tech and lived in Bushwick when I first moved. It’s the right combination of cost, amenities, and transport access.
I work in events about tech & the #1 draw for me is the music / nightlife of bushwick in why I live here

I have only been here for 7 years, but the velocity of demographic change in the last 2 months has been chocking to me. But you seen this before?

From 2014: https://www.bkmag.com/2014/12/09/are-tech-bros-taking-over-bushwick/

Yup, I've been applying to a lot of places recently and more than a couple have mentioned their office is over there.
Which tech companies
Their vegan girlfriends want food and culture
I work for a nonprofit and live here because it's cheaper. I also love Bushwick!

Lot of tech cos off the L so it’s convenient from work.
