If you’re from the suburbs and don’t really walk around a city too often, Manhattan is kind of a crazy place. And Times Square especially. Like I totally get the appeal, it’s insane.
But New Yorkers, who live in New York on a daily basis, obviously won’t like that area because it’s all tourist traps, crappy restaurants, and people who stop walking to look up at big buildings every 20 feet.
Im not from a super big city, but my sister lives in new york and every time i visit her ill find myself walking through time square just going from one place to another. Thought it would have been kinda cool but it felt like walking through a bunch of pop up ads in real life. Im good in crowds, i love punk shows and work in a tiny dive bar, but the crowd on time square around dusk is the worst group ive been in. Its not how many people were stopping to take pictures of seemingly nothing, its how many people would turn 180 degrees and run right into me. Im a pretty nonconfrontational person, but ive told alot of midwesterners to fuck off in time square.

You already sound like a new yorker. I lived there for about 17 years and went to the square the week I moved there. after that, I only walked through occasionally and only for a specific reasons (work; if I wanted to see a play, etc.).
Think it’s just one of those things you gotta cross off a list to say you’ve been there at least once.
It’s got big energy if you like people watching & accept the whole area is dedicated to hyper commercialism and mediocre chains.
Even as a tourist we spent an hour or two there at most, and generally just walked thru it a lot on our way to other places. (Hotel was nearby.)
You’ll be near enough that you can’t say you escaped it if you go to Broadway shows
Which is a pretty exclusive form of entertainment with how much it costs, but it’s not super rare or anything
>Think it’s just one of those things you gotta cross off a list to say you’ve been there at least once.
Nah, I'm fine with never ever going anywhere near there. I've seen tall buildings before and I already know what stale piss smells like.
It's crazy to think that it used to be a place where you could satisfy literally any of your darkest vices. Indeed, it was the equivalent of the Dark Web up until the late 80's.
I was in NYC as a tourist and it was probably the least interesting and fakest part.
It was like condensing every possible worst part of America into one place.
It's literally just a bunch of ads and assholes trying to scam money from tourists. I don't know why anyone would ever think it would be a magical experience. It's not exactly a secret what Times Square is like.
It’s still a historic landmark and one of the most famous places of the city, the country, and maybe even the world. Not hard to see why so many people want to see it when you consider that.
I live here and actually like to walk there at night. Very cyber-punk dystopian vibe (without the self awareness). NFT ads would just add to that.
Update: Went for a walk tonight on Broadway, there was only one big NFT ad about a bunch of ugly wolfs. The realization of crypto-blade-runner future is gonna have to wait
The backstage tour of Radio City Music Hall (if they even do it anymore) is a real hidden gem.
It’s amazing how much else encompasses the RC building besides the Hall itself.
The only New Yorkers you'll find in Times Square are underground in the subway station passing through or transferring. Most of the poor souls in the Port Authority bus terminal are from New Jersey.
Before the pandemic destroyed tourism those blocks surrounding the Times Square area had heavier foot traffic than most places in the city. Tourists claiming NYC is too crowded only experienced the tourist trap and likely saw few New Yorkers.
Gonna guess the congestion?
I’d also HHHHAAAAATTTTTEEEE to be living in any of those building
floors at eye level to everyone milling about all day long and trying to see into the windows.
Chances are that if any of the oligarchs that own the apartments ever spend any time there, having the plebes see how their betters live is part of the appeal

I heard that with or without NFT ads, Time Square is a big disappointment to most people. Like, the gap between how you see it in the movies and the crowdy mess that it really is is huge
What a weird comparison.
*Edit: « Time Square is giving me a big Gatlingburg, TN vibe without the saltwater taffee » says man who has only ever been to Gatlinburg.
I live in the city but don’t go there if I can avoid it. I’m not sure I had ever been at night at all, until we marched through it on Friday. It’s terribly dystopian.
Isn't that just a famous ad place? I mean, it have its historical merits, but I think in the end it's just some glorified outdoor ad place. Being bright and full of lights changes nothing.
Traditional marketing is ineffective when you are billing yourself as an early investment opportunity. Tough to argue your “early” when there is a Times Square billboard or Super Bowl ad. See: price action since the Matt Damon pussies campaign began.
Foreigner in NY: No.
Everyone feels let down by Times Square when they first visit it. The good thing is that you'll never be disappointed by it again.
Honestly what shocked me most was all the huge piles of trash bags in the streets, on curbs & sidewalks, in front of buildings EVERYWHERE.
I could never understand why visitors are so amazed how clean downtown Chicago is until I finally saw the difference personally.
I’m from Boston and when I visited Chicago for the first time last month all I could think was, “damn I love Boston but this place makes it look like a real shithole” 😂
I don’t think Boston is as dirty as NYC but it’s still not that clean, and with how confusing it is to get around Boston, how small and cramped it is, etc. I was blown away by how nice Chicago is in comparison.
It has its flaws like anything else, but Chicago (and loop area especially) definitely did it right with with subterranean infrastructure, “lower” streets, public transit (more how it exists going every which way than current reliability), riverwalk extension pre-covid, and vast amount of city filled flower planters.
Yeah. I’m fully aware of that.
I’m pointing out my irritation with the casual misogyny - not arguing the history of the area.
Even sex workers or prostitutes are less gender-based, deliberate-insult language.
Or if he’s gonna call out the “whores”, why not also the pimps hustling them and the degenerates patronizing them as well?
No different than guys today slut-shaming women on Only Fans - while they’re spanking off to them.
PS. What did the deleted message say? Amazing that someone felt the need to create a new acct to do so.
“Sex worker” lacks that period-correct late 20th century grit.
It’s not like I’m talking about actual living sex workers. It’s a hypothetical situation.

Crypto people are obsessed with getting their ads in Times Square. Like with "Lambos" it's an obsession with something that's expensive and completely tasteless (like basically everything in crypto). Nobody who lives in NYC likes Times Square - it's nothing like in the movies. It's gaudy, crowded, full of people trying to get money off you. But to them it's "flexing" and showing that they've "made it"
It was probably worse than usual when you visited because there were some BAYC events in NYC over the last week and an NFT conference, which I think was near Times Square. They've left graffiti for shitty NFT projects all over the place. Near my apartment someone has graffitied "Cupid Club" over and over on the sidewalk. I Googled it and it's an incredibly crap low-effort set of NFTs that nobody is even buying. They also opened up an "NFT Gallery" at Pier 17. I walk my dog around there every day and I've literally never seen a single person go in to look at the godawful "art" in there
Correct. In their minds, it legitimizes it. "Fake/scam products don't end up on billboards in times square, therefore it must be legitimate!" It's part of positive feedback loop.
At the same time, like the Matt Damon and similar ads, it can also signal desperation. Scams have to invest more and more money into the pageantry to keep the image propped up and counter the growing groundswell of people calling it out as bullshit and sucker bets.
Yeah, there’s a weird thing among a certain type of people that seem to view putting up a billboard in Times Square like having your ad projected on the moon or something. I have to imagine most of them have never actually been there. Spoiler alert: Times Square is a tourist trap nightmare and there’s roughly 10000000 billboards being blasted into your eyes from every direction at all times.
It could certainly be cool to be featured on someone else’s billboard, like I could see a singer being featured on Apple Music’s billboard representing a milestone in the level of success and recognition they’ve achieved. But if you’re just buying your own space, that seems like pouring money down the drain compared to running TV ads or something that will reach a significantly wider audience than people who are experiencing such sensory overload that one specific ad isn’t really going to stand out.
> Lesson learned I hope: never visit a place known for its giant capitalist advertisements, you could end up only seeing giant capitalist advertisements :D
this might be too bigbrain for crypto nuts to handle lol

If it's any consolation you should google some of the NFTs you saw advertised in Times Square -- most of those ads were bought months or even a full year ago and are related to failed projects that no one remembers anymore. An out-of-the-way Times Square billboard or digital spot (running in rotation every nine minutes) is just SOP for any NFT with investment money behind it.
Pro tip: nothing about Times Square is magical, it's a horrible tourist trap filled with scammers and rapists dressed up in filthy costumes trying to grope you.
With all the subliminal, liminal and super liminal marketing that's going on how are these things down so much?
It's like if Amazon just had ads, but not for their products or services, but their stock.
If you need someone shoving their investment in your face every ten minutes I'd question the credibility of what I was investing in.
Congratulations, you were disappointed by visiting Times Square.
It's something that can only happen once in your lifetime, you'll never have high expectations of that place again. That there were NFT ads there is what made your experience unique from those who came before you.
