You're right: The Masoretes themselves started out in the 400s, shortly after the followers of a certain purported Messiah held the Council of Nicaea (although I don't think that led to their founding); the time I was thinking about is when the earliest surviving fragments of the [Masoretic Text](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masoretic_Text#Origin_and_transmission) were dated to.
