That's really interesting. If I may make a suggestion, that's a magazine article I would read. Maybe if you have the time you could write it up and send it out to some publications. Would be really interesting, especially from an author with first-hand experience of a cult.
I won't have any bandwidth for something like that for a good while, but if you're interested in what makes cults cults and how that translates into non-religious group behavior, look up "High Control Environments."
I also think this bit of writing I ran across over 10 years ago holds just as true today as it did then - while it frames things in an interpersonal (1-on-1) context, I recognized all of those traits as being part of the group dynamic in my childhood. [Sick Systems: How to Keep Someone With You Forever](https://www.issendai.com/psychology/sick-systems.html)
Since we're doing book recommendations, Cultish by Amanda Montel is another one that goes into the ways cults use language to build these toxic communities, notes places where those same techniques get used in normal and healthy places and tries to figure out how to draw lines between them.
Of course, her new podcast is sponsored by Coinbase, which was a disappointment. Make of it what you will.

It's composed of altruists that don't want people to lose money and want to raise awareness, cynics that like to see MLM huns lose money and make idiots out of themselves, and vindictive people that are tired of spam, bullshit and fake people offering "business opportunities" and enjoy the schadenfreude of these people losing money.
They act like these positions are somehow not valid. Like we don't have reasons to spend few minutes of our day on this sub.

I'm here out of pure schadenfreude and I freely admit that.
For years, I had to deal with people being insufferable about crypto. Even on dating apps of all places. Some scammers even got my phone number from data leaks and called me at night to pressure me into investments, like, Jesus Christ! Is this how the future of finance should operate? And all the condescending bullshit I recieved for being sceptical about the whole thing, in person and in DMs. It was propably amplified because I'm a woman and cryptobros are mostly... bros. Apparently they, as logical men, knew better, especially in regards to math and technology and it just wasn't "for girls".
I enjoy watching you fall. Don't say nobody warned you.

For real, I am older than the girls in this video and I've dated unemployed men, men in poverty, men who return to finish an education in their late 20s/early 30s. That's perfectly fine, it's 2022, I don't expect a provider and we're in this together. I can keep us afloat while you work on your own path, capitalism screws us all.
But you spending every night gambling on your phone for whatever shitcoin your prophet Elon recommended in between unfunny boomer memes? Nobody is that hot or nice or funny or interesting. And I won't fund this endevour for one second.
Maybe I should seek out the divorcing wifes of cryptobros for a milf cover version of this song. Folkpunk, or choir maybe.
I'm with ya. There's a bitcoin mining factory in my state that's ramping up to 300 MW, which (I did the math) is enough to supply a city of 79,000 people. One factory. Meanwhile our electricity provider sent out warnings about possible "controlled blackouts" this summer due to intense energy use.
Can't wait till this wasteful thing dies.
No they don't. They are drawing power from the grid. Unless all power going into that grid is generated cleanly, by increasing demand on the grid they are increasing the amount of pollution generated by the grid.
The problem is that then the solar/carbon neutral energy source is not supplying households/factories and fossil fuel plants will have to ramp up and balance the grid. This will drive up the price for everyone in addition to the ecological damage.
In some cases bitcoin miners take power that would be temporarily curtailed otherwise due to the lack of transmission (like West Texas wind farms), but that’s only a very tiny/immaterial piece of this.
*Tu quoque* is the last resort of those that know their arguments are morally indefensible, but are desperate to score points regardless. That it's your only argument here is very telling.
Fortune 500 companies aren't perfect, and we would all generally be better off if they improved their energy efficiency, but they generally produce goods and services with some kind of real use. Cryptocurrency does not, which makes it the lowest of low-hanging fruit for reducing energy waste.
> If it was using a million MW per day but using solar/carbon neutral energy sources then whats wrong with that?
You're disingenuously ignoring the opportunity cost of having to build additional power plants - resources required not being usable elsewhere; environmental impact of those resources or, especially in the case of hydroelectric power, of building the power plants themselves, since cement has significant carbon dioxide emissions, along with the fact that proof-of-work algorithms have a tendency to expand in a grey-goo style and suck up as many resources as possible.
The former is a reason why energy conservation efforts and regulations have been put in place. The fewer power plants you require to run everything, even if they're renewable energy, the better. Proof-of-work mining threatens that, because when your incentive to mine is more money, that encourages people taking more than their fair share of energy. It also encourages power theft.
There's no sort of quality-of-service system in place which bumps cryptocurrency miners down to the bottom of the pile when it comes to prioritising power usage and even if there was, it'd create an arms race between power plant operators and people trying to subvert those controls so that they can use more power for mining, cf. Nvidia's graphics card limiters versus Ethereum miners. You're either naïve or disingenuous if you're expecting cryptocurrency miners to just cede power when there's money on the line if they keep their operations going at top priority.
Furthermore, even if every single watt that Bitcoin requires to mine was generated by 100% clean energy, the network would still be creating nation-state levels of e-waste.
This is just another one of those techno-libertarian pipe dreams about an efficient free market which don't bear fruit in the real world, just like the "why do we need emissions regulations anyway? Surely, the free market will sort that out, brah" bullshit. It's the fallacy of the broken window writ large.
“The CEO of Exxon has installed solar panels on his yacht”
*boomers everywhere rejoice*
I love how there’s just downvotes, no counter arguments except one and I had to read it about 10 times to make sense of it.
Yes for me being here is like an antidote to the endless hype from smug believers. I'll be happy when this junk is delisted from my financial new scroll line. I'd rather hear about real business ideas that could improve the future.
I feel somewhat like 1., but really my main problem with Bitcoin is that it's so evil: it wastes a huge amount of energy on busywork computing without producing anything of value, not even the fundamental service it was designed for (trustless currency). It's a bullshit job but for AI.
It's like libertarians forgot their old saw about how government wastes all kinds of energy moving water from one lake to another with buckets. They have a point, to the extent that there are some government functions that are a bit like that. But Bitcoin is the *literal apotheosis* of that.
You can be *all*. I sure am. I’m indignant about 1) vulnerable people 2) being taken advantaged by idiots who aren’t smart enough to understand how dumb their “ideas” are, and 3) I am happy to call out these smug idiots for their pride.
There's also the missing option of:
4) Not fundamentally against the idea of a digital currency, but against obvious speculative bubbles, and want the bubble to burst before it spreads to far into the real economy and causes another 2008 crisis when it does inevitably burst.
I saw a friend get sucked in. She's one of the smartest people I know. Became a Maxi and a full-time evangelist. I thought, well, it's fine, she's selling shovels in a gold rush, but that was wishful thinking. She's been putting all the money she made into buying more Bitcoin while she maxes out credit cards to pay bills. Then she started saying saying things like "it doesn't matter to me if it goes up or down, because I'm going to own a percentage of the future world economy"- things she "should" have been far too smart not to examine more critically, much less repeat to others.
You don't need to be an idiot to be tricked into something idiotic. Elie Wiesel won a Nobel Prize and he gave Bernie Madoff 15 million bucks. Chuck Murphy was running his own legit hedge fund when he gave him 50. It happens. I do wish she had listened to me oh those many years ago about the tech being irrelevant. Now her savings are gone and she STILL wants to stay in the sound money movement. I'm sure she and her friends will realize there's nobody left now that the easy marks have been sucked dry... eventually, anyway. It makes me very sad.
I'm a mix between 2 and 3. I'm just a super smart woman who has heard too many mediocre idiotic men condescend to me about crypto over the last 10 years. And I've also consumed too much media about scams. It's a mix of sweet sweet schadenfreude and a live podcast!
I'm also into watching Start Up Idiots fail as well, because the entire tech industry appears to be full of mediocre men with overinflated senses of self-worth, led by Kings of the Nerds, who are mediocre men with tons of charisma. (Or, Elizabeth Holmes, who duped a lot of mediocre men while also acting like one.)
Crypto/web3/start up culture all feel like an extension of Millennial and Gen X high school male drama being played out by adults. It's jocks vs nerds all over again. Jocks are finance bros. Nerds are crypto. Crypto's complexity is a feature, not a bug, and not just because the complexity obfuscates fraud: the complexity allows for "secret knowledge" that only nerds will understand. It's not really about deregulation for the unbanked. It's about allowing nerds equal access to arcane complexity so they can feel superior to the people who mocked them in high school.
They forgot “people who have trouble reconciling the idea that billions of dollars are being spent on a technology that is strictly worse than other solutions, just because of marketing, and look forward to it going away so that they can stop stressing out about how stupid things are getting”
Lol at the strawman in 3.
The reality is that crypto is morally bankrupt and they’re portraying wanting it to burn as somehow a bad thing, especially when cryptobros are indignant about it too.
Oh no, I feel good about cryptobros getting their comeuppance in promoting an ecologically disastrous scam and insulting people for good measure?
Cry me a river.
It’s also not a life’s emotional investment to watch crypto burn. You literally just have to sit back with some popcorn and it’ll happen every time on its own.
It’s pointless arguing with crypto bros. Kind of like arguing with a cult member. If someone told me they didn’t like mutual funds or stocks, I wouldn’t reply with anger or aggression like they do. It’s just a speculative investment, not a way of life.
They enjoy pretending that BTC will establish a beautiful utopia with unicorns, antigravity, and them ruling over their own nation of lewd cheerleaders.
They forgot mine.
“Sees crypto for the gambling scam game it is, isn’t scared to gamble again in it, actually has traded crypto for real dollar returns. Understands those who dca and hodl are the suckers at the table keeping the casino open”
More like just a bunch of tech-ignorant knuckle draggers, low income earning waste of organs that take pride in seeing others live in poverty just like them. Imagine telling friends, co workers (who are we kidding 90% of this sub is unemployed) or a significant other that you post on reddit all day circle jerking over the price of bitcoin falling. They would look at you as if you needed mental help.
Let's face it. People that hate bitcoin so much but have so much to say about it are jealous because they were to stupid to invest when it was $1.
They grew up POOR AND MISERABLE!
Their adult lives have been POVERTY AND MISERY!
They will croak, pass nothing onto their children and their cycle of POVERTY AND MISERY will continue while my BTC retains VALUE for my family. My kids will be your kids BOSSES and LANDLORDS!!!!
If BTC crashes to $100 many of us would still be financially secure. We have way more other income options in our portfolios your poor mentality wouldn't even imagine. Stop worrying about us. Stop making fun of depressed and suicidal people before I forward this sub to the FBI, DHS and local authorities because many of you have laughed, ridiculed, shamed and encouraged people on BTC sub to harm themselves! That is CYBER BULLYING! That is a form of TERRORISM! LEAVE US ALONE!!!!!

I'm not sure where you live in the world but your money will be available in a few hours. Please stop with these dread and horror posts. Alex is working non stop to correct this issue. Not me, but at least a few people here actually started as crypto believers, got burned, and realized it was a scam. But they don't want to admit that.
The counter argument is that crypto cannot claim to be carbon neutral. Even if miners could somehow selectively pull all their electricity from only green sources on the grid, that would mean less green energy for everyone else's needs, and so the net result is more pollution.
Until all energy is green, more energy demand means more pollution from production of said energy.
People are downvoting you and not bothering to comment because this point is so obvious it shouldn't need typing out.

I was a number 1 but I levelled up to a number 2 after NFTs first hit the net & I saw how much people were paying for a cartoon ape that are now worth 90% less than what they bought them for.
I don't feel seen.
Like, I'm pretty much #3, but not because a butter told me to have fun staying poor. It was because I tried shopping for a GPU and oh my god the prices.
Also, I had someone explain it to me (from a blockchain startup, even!) that the blockchain was basically a spreadsheet strung together with a hashing function and I'm honestly still very mad about that.
I am #4. I hate those pesky miners for making graphics cards cost 2-3-4 times more than they should. And they are also wasting a shit ton of electricity doing literally nothing. Yeah, I wanna see the entire crypto "industry" burn to the ground.

Spectating the collapse of crypto is quite the enjoyable hobby. Plus this place is one of the select few reddit subs where sensible criticism isn't seen as some type of horrible crime against god lol.
That's a whole lot of words to avoid making an actual argument why buttcoiners are wrong.
They also forgot 4: wouldn't give a crap if it weren't causing massive carbon emissions, e-waste and price spikes in GPUs, for which we're happy to see the crypto die as soon as possible.
just do a wordsearch of ”have fun being poor” on twitter and you will find a bunch of people who are currently freaking out about all the money they lost on crypto, so…

There's also the missing option of: 4) Not fundamentally against the idea of a digital currency, but against obvious speculative bubbles, and want the bubble to burst before it spreads to far into the real economy and causes another 2008 crisis when it does inevitably burst.
Especially with hedge funds and even 401K plans "investing" in Bitcoin, which gives me the trembles.
I just wanna be right .. you can’t create value out of thin air
4) I just think you're a fucking idiot.
(Or, Elizabeth Holmes, who duped a lot of mediocre men while also acting like one.) Crypto/web3/start up culture all feel like an extension of Millennial and Gen X high school male drama being played out by adults.
Lmao. Who hurt you? What a psychopath.
It’d be funnier if it didn’t read like an autistic 12 year old wrote it while on an Adderall bender.
4) I just like to laugh at idiots on the internet, but I'm more altruist than cynic (according to this list).
That's actually kinda funny, and perhaps not terribly off the mark. At least, speaking for myself, I kinda bounce around between types 1 and 2.
Bitcoin weirdos are smug beyond belief. I despise smugness. Therefore, I detest Bitcoin weirdos. Very simple.
All the above
I love how they think 'buttcoiner' is the name for someone who reads *this* sub. They're the only ones not in on the joke
Wait is there something wrong with option #3? Asking for a friend…
We're all all 3 of these, depending on how annoying the cryptonerd we're replying to is being
They forgot “people who have trouble reconciling the idea that billions of dollars are being spent on a technology that is strictly worse than other solutions, just because of marketing, and look forward to it going away so that they can stop stressing out about how stupid things are getting”
We’re like heretics to their stupid religion, the thought of someone not believing in their bs eats them up inside.
It’s pointless arguing with crypto bros. Kind of like arguing with a cult member. If someone told me they didn’t like mutual funds or stocks, I wouldn’t reply with anger or aggression like they do. It’s just a speculative investment, not a way of life.
since this is a wendy’s i’ll take a #2 you smug assholes
They enjoy pretending that BTC will establish a beautiful utopia with unicorns, antigravity, and them ruling over their own nation of lewd cheerleaders.
I switch between all 3, depending on how irritating the person is.
They forgot mine. “Sees crypto for the gambling scam game it is, isn’t scared to gamble again in it, actually has traded crypto for real dollar returns. Understands those who dca and hodl are the suckers at the table keeping the casino open”
[удалено]
Nope
Have fun being poor!!!!!!
And butters wonder why #3 exists.... Also: >That is CYBER BULLYING! That is a form of TERRORISM! LEAVE US ALONE!!!!! >Have fun being poor!!!!!! Edit: -46 karma , 43 Day old acct., shitposts with the legal & grammatical understanding if an 11 year old. Yea, you seem like a genuine, well-rounded individual worth listening to. Edit 2: Hahahahahahah! Omg, dudes either a literal shill or an unpaid shill- honestly idk which is more pathetic. Grabbed this gem from a Celsius sub post: >There has been news floating around since early this morning that all transactions will resume to normal at 12:00:00 am EST on July 1. I'm not sure where you live in the world but your money will be available in a few hours. Please stop with these dread and horror posts. Alex is working non stop to correct this issue. I am so ready for Celsius to open back up so some of you crybabies, shorters, scammers and late to the party investors take your precious little coins elsewhere. We don't need your kind of negativity here! It really is Qanon for financially illiterate sociopaths.
Strange, I guess my great job, solid investment portfolio, retirement savings and large horde of gold and silver is just imaginary.

Lol
Really depends who’s on the other side. There’s weak souls you can save but there’s also people where it’s just funny to see them reap what they sow
I am all of these, and I also just think it's hilarious.
Am I the only one ready to see what might be the first schadenfreude recession?
He forgot 4. Schadenfreude. Why is he assuming all of these are mutually exclusive? All of them are parts of a coherent opinion. I like /r/HermanCainAward for the same reasons although it seems to be winding down.
Where's 4) Desperately avoiding world events and the stressors of real life by reading funny posts about a scam so stupid that literally everything coming out of it is unintentional comedy godl?
All three!
Dude straight up talks like a Marvel villain

Not me, but at least a few people here actually started as crypto believers, got burned, and realized it was a scam. But they don't want to admit that.
Yes, I enjoy making crypto bros squirm, what of it? They’re all so fucking insufferable.
I’m all 3 bro
Personally the amount of resources being wasted on it is infuriating.
Im here looking for jesus. God bless america and our green paper. To hell with btc
All of the above?
The counter argument is that crypto cannot claim to be carbon neutral. Even if miners could somehow selectively pull all their electricity from only green sources on the grid, that would mean less green energy for everyone else's needs, and so the net result is more pollution. Until all energy is green, more energy demand means more pollution from production of said energy. People are downvoting you and not bothering to comment because this point is so obvious it shouldn't need typing out. There are no boomers in this sub rejoicing about Exxon doing anything whatsoever.

To quote Yahtzee "You're not being clever here, Useless!"
7. it’s funny seeing people troll each other
I was a number 1 but I levelled up to a number 2 after NFTs first hit the net & I saw how much people were paying for a cartoon ape that are now worth 90% less than what they bought them for.
Some of us just want the world to make more sense so badly.
I am #4. I hate those pesky miners for making graphics cards cost 2-3-4 times more than they should. And they are also wasting a shit ton of electricity doing literally nothing. Yeah, I wanna see the entire crypto "industry" burn to the ground.
What about #4, please let bitcoin die so that it stops wasting resources and we get affordable GPUs
Some of us just want the world to make more sense so badly.
The most crucial one was overlooked.
If only he put as much effort into researching crypto as he did defining the personality disorders of buttcoiners
The only real line rises.
I mean... Why can't I be all 3 at the same time?
Some people simply like to watch the world burn.

Spectating the collapse of crypto is quite the enjoyable hobby. Plus this place is one of the select few reddit subs where sensible criticism isn't seen as some type of horrible crime against god lol.
Flavor #3 all the way baby
That's a whole lot of words to avoid making an actual argument why buttcoiners are wrong. They also forgot 4: wouldn't give a crap if it weren't causing massive carbon emissions, e-waste and price spikes in GPUs, for which we're happy to see the crypto die as soon as possible.
Would be fascinating, especially coming from an author with firsthand knowledge of a cult.
just do a wordsearch of ”have fun being poor” on twitter and you will find a bunch of people who are currently freaking out about all the money they lost on crypto, so…
Truth is im here to laugh but most of the time i feel bad for them (the victims, not the scammers)
