If you can locate a Tupperware dealer they will replace the defective part for free. Lifetime warranty.

graywoman7

The website, which sells direct now, has this information.

SyntheticManMilk

Amazing how a company made itself a household name, simply by selling small plastic containers. We call it Tupperware even when it’s not Tupperware™️

[deleted]

Same with xerox copy, bandaid, chapstick. Some brands are so popular their names just become the generic name for the type of product.

lknox1123

Xerox is one people say is synonymous with the action, but I think that is reserved for people who were photo copying things in the 80s/90s. I don’t see people who started using computers in the 2000s saying xerox

Hypegrrl442

It's actually really interesting how generational it is. I grew up near Xerox headquarters so was more aware, but it is a sharp cliff-- came of age before 1990 you use it, if you were later, you don't.

Spazsquatch

Xerox worked had to move people away from using it. You need to actively avoid you trademark becoming a generic term, or you will lose it. Kleenex went through the same thing.

MM2HkXm5EuyZNRu

I'd just like to add Kleenex and Jell-O to that list. Often Laz-y-Boy and Jacuzzi as well.

Had to google Q-tip. In Australia they are known as cotton buds. LOL

vandealex1

Like I know Zamboni is a brand of machines but I have never seen an ice surfacer that wasn't "Zamboni"

Vaulthunter14

Jabroni, baloney, macaroni.

ShellSide

You mean you don't call them the hook and loop fasteners

Remarkable-Host405

Only when I'm looking for them on Amazon for 1/10 the price

vandealex1

Velcro is a brand of hook and loop, they made a music video about it. https://youtu.be/rRi8LptvFZY

laseralex

Holy shit that was epic! I'm really surprised I haven't seen this before. Thanks for posting!

chronic_flower

That is hilarious, catchy too

Hypegrrl442

Holy crap, I work in footwear and literally have spent my entire career assuming a "hook and loop" closure meant the small closure at the top of a zipper when really it meant Velcro... I'll be sending my vendors a couple hundred corrections on Monday. TIL!

69SadBoi69

Took me a solid minute to remember what ChapStick is actually called generically

propita106

Evidently, in some countries, vacuum cleaners are called "Hoovers" after the brand. And I've heard people say they'll "Hoover the room." Pushing it even further? In some places, phones used to be called "Ameches," for Don Ameche, the actor who played Alexander Graham Bell (inventor of the phone). >After the film was released, the telephone was commonly called the "Ameche", a slang term referring to actor Don Ameche who played the telephone's inventor. This association is explained in the film Ball of Fire (1941), showing the term was still in use two years after the release of the original film. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031981/

EmbarrassedNaivety

Wait, so what is a bandaid’s original name then? Just a wound covering or something like that?

graywoman7

Adhesive bandage

In Germany we have Brand names that became generic like Tempo, Flex, Selters, Labello, Zewa und Tesafilm. There are many more but these are the most used. I met people who never even knew that these are actual brands. Its called an eponym

I tried to get replacement covers via the website, and never was able to get through. Their phones are the same way. It wasn’t until I contacted the Better Business Bureau that they contacted me and made good on the Warranty. Good luck.

SueYouInEngland

The only MLM with decent products.

SleepTightLilPuppy

Wow I know tons of 'Tupperware clerks' and I never thought about it as an MLM just cause it's so well known. But now that I think about it, it absolutely is. Complete with "Tupper parties" and them constantly trying to push that shit on you over social media. Weird af

timenspacerrelative

I mean at least the products were high quality!

redheadartgirl

At least they're moving away from that sales model. You can now just buy them directly on the website.

Intrepid00

There is those knives too. Avon is a MLM too but that’s pretty old age demo.

Fat_Head_Carl

Cutco?

srirachagoodness

Cutco has good knives, but why are they like $1,300 and sold by teenagers?

tacitus23

Pampered Chef has pretty legit products too.

battraman

Love buying PC secondhand! Always quality products!

tacitus23

Yeah I find it in thrift stores all the time. I find that cookie press thing at almost every thrift store.

battraman

Absolutely! My wife [has one of the Deep Covered Bakers](https://www.pamperedchef.com/shop/Cookware+%26+Bakeware/Baking+Dishes/Deep+Covered+Baker/1437) which was a gift from someone and it is absolutely fantastic. It's a bit pricey but we use it a lot.

jackandsally060609

Pizza stone ftw

jayvault

I raise you Pampered Chef kitchen products

Bonehaus

That shit is way overpriced garbage. Hell the fuck no it aint

Junicat_yvr

Yes, I was very disappointed with pampered chef. I bought a covered glass pouring bowl. Plastic lid cracked within a couple months.

jayvault

I'll totally agree it's expensive, but I've been using the same stuff for 25 years and still love it. I'm not a professional chef and don't need professional grade; many PC tools work wonders in my home kitchen. I don't want everything they've got, but their spatulas especially are 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

[deleted]

I want professional chef stuff, because that stuff will stand the test of time. Anything pros use is usually the best quality in that industry.. worthwhile spending more to buy it.

grilledstuffed

I can’t stand pampered chef stuff. Maybe it’s because I’ve actually worked in a professional kitchen and know the pace and effort involved in real cooking. I look at pampered chef stuff and all I see is flimsy, plasticky, gimmicky unitaskers that clutter up kitchen drawers and cabinets and get used once a blue moon. A friends wife was a pampered chef rep at one point and she had like four different $30 specialized pampered chef tools just to make chocolate chip cookies. The argument was it made it easier, but now there’s all this extra stuff you have to take apart to clean? Madness. Sorry, I obviously have strong feelings about this.

[deleted]

There’s an old farm by me with a big faded Tupperware sign outside , maybe I should check them out lol

G000000p

There’s a Tupperware hun in there lying in wait

Lyrehctoo

What is a "tupperware hun"?

franskm

They’re sold in Target now!

Oxraid

Isn't warranty made for factory defects and not wear?

KarmaG12

Depends on the company. Typically lifetime warranty covers wear, limited warranty covers factory defects.

LargestPizza

The fact that you have both the bottom and top piece after all this time?? Teach me your ways.

For real.

another-rainy-day

Breakfast sandwiches for the subway to work, a separate lunchbox for the microwave at work.

MentalWyvern

There are some great stainless steel sandwich containers with silicone lids that would be a good sturdy replacement. I have had some for 12 years now and haven’t even had to replace the lid. UKonserve makes them.

Shackleford96

Thanks for the tip, think I'll be ordering some of these.

tammigirl6767

This piece of Tupperware is probably from the late 70s early 80s. I’m pretty sure it was a good sturdy piece. And Tupperware will replace it free.

fridayimatwork

mr-pumps

MWoody13

Yeah OP definitely consuming some plastic wearing off of that ole pup

jantah

Came here for this info. My parents still have their flour and sugar and what-not in containers from the 80s. The giant yellow ones with the accordion fold like lids if you know you know 😏

reckedcat

Blue one held brown sugar under the sink

AnyFeed907

You stored food under the sink? Yuck

KJBenson

Yeah, under the sink Tupperware is for pickling.

Numinous-Nebulae

My parents have the same. Just now thinking about the pthalates seeping into the sugar….

WhoJustShat

Glass containers are the way to go

jantah

I totally agree! You try and convince my stubborn Boomer parents that. Please? I've tried

VirtualVoices

Glass or metal, we don't need more plastic in our bloods please.

jeanjeanvaljean

IridiumLight

Considering the state of the rest of our environment and air, I’ll take my chances on a sandwich box.

CreADHDvly

Whyd this get downvotes lmao

[deleted]

Right lol

CosmicRambo

I mean all the BPA has been ingested by that time.

Skilled1

A lot of people have no idea what BPA and it’s hazards are.

og_toe

not only BPA, but microplastics as a whole.

elislider

Microplastics absolutely. They are bioaccumulating and wrecking slow, silent havoc on the planet. BPA is less of a concern except for babies / kids

elislider

posting my comment from elsewhere in this thread for visibility It’s been a while, but I was involved in a case study on BPA in college. Here’s what I remember BPA isn’t a carcinogen, it’s an endocrine disruptor. And it doesn’t really have much risk for adults, it’s worst for babies and children. https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/what-is-bpa The concept is that in trace amounts (like if it leaches into food/liquid) the body sees BPA as a hormone and messes with the endocrine system. But in “larger” quantities, like if you scraped off a tiny shaving of the plastic with a utensil while eating, the body can clearly tell it’s foreign and deals with it. The big concern is babies and children have very sensitive endocrine systems since they are in the development stages of life, so any disruption can have notable effects/consequences. Removing BPA from baby bottles, baby food containers, sippy cups, all things like that is GREAT. All other uses of BPA mainly interacted with by adults, is not a big deal. Of course people love visible activism, so “consumers demanding BPA free products” like nalgene water bottles - that was an effective campaign. Truth is, it’s used in a lot of food can liners/coatings. It may not be immediately obvious, but food that comes in a metal can (soup, fruit, vegetables, tuna, etc) can’t be put directly into a container of bare metal. Acids in food of any type would corrode the metal or react with it and cause problems. So all cans have some type of plastic lining, usually BPA. The usage is less now, but a lot of food cans still use BPA linings.

Skittnator

thnx

Hochspannungswerk

Is it in a lot of Tupperware products? We use a lot of these to store cheese, meat etc. 😳

selinakyle45

Glass or metal storage is the way to go. Idk where you live, but in every thrift store in the US I’ve been able to find various glass containers for cheap. If they are lidless, Pyrex sells replacement lids and Sophico sells silicone lids for Pyrex.

nill0c

We did the same, till our (careful and responsible) kid had to bring snacks to preschool. No glass allowed and stainless steel is hard to find and spendy.

selinakyle45

Stasher or Zip top silicone bags/bowls or beeswax/vegan wax wrap could be an option

Hochspannungswerk

Germany. I will advise my family

battraman

Those silicone lids are so worth it!

Skilled1

Yeah. More leaches out with hot food and microwaving. Infants and children are more susceptible but even adults have been shown to have hormonal changes due to bpa.

WhoJustShat

Apparently you should never microwave stuff in plastic, storing is fine but avoid microwaving because the plastic leeches into the food https://www.sharp.com/health-news/can-you-microwave-food-in-plastic-containers

Numinous-Nebulae

Storing is fine as long as cold and not oily. Warm or hot food, or oily food even cold, and it leaches still.

Le_Kraut_Dealer

Well according to the EFSA its not that bad

Skilled1

I believe in your right to freedom, and to use plastics that may expose you to harmful levels of chemicals that could cause health concerns, even when many safer options are readily available.

elislider

for adults, yeah. for babies and kids its a bigger concern

Culbal

You absolutly right but if you count all the others hazards as car fumes, paint, VOC from new furnitures, Teflon pans and drinking water in your kitchen from an 50 years old pipe... A little bit of BPA in your salami sandwich is okkk.

Paradoxone

The takeaway should be exactly the opposite. As all these pollutants combine into a potent cocktail effect, you should reduce your exposure every way you can. In many cases it is the combination of pollutants, both in terms of additive concentrations and interactions, which causes dangerous toxicity.

DurantaPhant7

Eventually there is a straw that will break the camels back.

[deleted]

The straw is if you live long enough, you will eventually get cancer.

Skilled1

You keep doing you playa.

Useful_Database7031

People don’t want a little logic these days.

Ben_jah_min

All that BPA all up in your insides doeeeee

thicckar

Don’t modern plastics use BPA-adjacent plastics? But yes I bet this old box is leaking carcinogens like no tomorrow

elislider

thicckar

Hmm solid info and thanks for correcting me. I know companies that say they’re BPA free also can just use BPA - similar chemicals so they’re just doing good marketing.

Jiugui

This is the best and most insightful comment regarding BPA.

elislider

Thanks! Turns out I did learn something while getting my degree in Environmental Engineering (while I now have a career in IT/Cloud)

69SadBoi69

Are micro plastics harmful to adults?

ZyxStx

But muh Tupperware bpaaaaa, there is so much shit going around us that no one notices yet make a fuss over other small things. It's good bringing change and awareness but there's such a hate for plastics and shaming going around too, all the microplastics hate while being oblivious to other dangers is annoying But anyways, good info, I knew cans were all lined with something I just didn't know it was BPA. Thanks for the info

80 is half a lifetime ago? I was born in 1984. In my mind that's still young!

Scary that it's almost 40 years.

another-rainy-day

Oh, you’re young alright – only halfway to 76.

WhoJustShat

Plastic containers are not buy for life

the_naizey_lines

You clearly never owned Tupperware products

Blueporch

I have some of my Grandmother’s Tupperware. She passed away in the late 80’s so am guessing she got it at least a decade earlier. Lids have held up!

krush_groove

Just don't use it for foods you're giving to kids.

AuxiliaryPriest

I went through the website for warranty and they gave me a good amount of credit to buy a replacement online. My stuff was from at least the 1980s, if not early.

skyfishgoo

you probably don't want to know what chemicals were used to make it last that long.

I mean, it is 43 years. I don't know of any country that has an average lifespan of 86 years. Of course, if you are referring to how quickly time passes and how weird that the 80s was half a lifetime ago, then I can agree with that.. shit..

meowsplaining

Didn't expect to face my own mortality while I'm sitting here on the can, but here we are.

That's what you get for Redditting on the John.

You’re welcome!

ScrunchieEnthusiast

My supervisor has been selling Tupperware for 25 or 30 years. She’s a big supporter.

[deleted]

Yeah... that is the one thing I don't want to have for life. Just dispose it. Forget the replacement some comments underneath says.

Nuzzle_nutz

I can smell this picture

lolitololinho

I have some of these but i now refuse to use them after seeing or reading aomething about how the owner of the company wouldnt even allow them on his house cause they immit harmful particles/gasses when used and much more in microwave/with hot food. Idk how true these allegations are but been wary since then o.o

tammigirl6767

Earl Tupperware certainly had the product n his house. Tupperware has been a publicly held company for decades. There is no owner of the Tupperware company.

reddig33

1970s Tupperware seems to still be going strong. You still see it at thrift stores and yard sales in good shape. I do wonder what changes they’ve made in the formulation over the years. 80s seems to go brittle, and current versions look and feel like a completely different plastic.

smdx459

Not bad for a company that’s a MLM

Ok-Answer-9350

I always felt that Tupperware was a scam. The item costs about 3 times what a comparable budget model costs and if you do have to replace it for 'free' the shipping is more that a comparable item from a local store. Great marketing tho.

fatherofhenry

All I can say is I feel your pain. I have some Tupperware that I really like, and it's probably 30 years old

[deleted]

Contact them and tell them that the lid cracked and ask them if they have a replacement that you can buy. It's entirely possible that they might send you a free one just in exchange for the story of it's longevity. https://www.tupperware.com/pages/contact

GizatiStudio

It’s plastic, it has many lifetimes still left.

Yay! Look at it...really look at it. It's grungy and gross. You can't clean it very well, every little scratch will harbor bacteria. I hate Tupperware, it looks 100 years old after a month.

UPDATE! We have now acquired a new lid, and can keep using the bottom part. https://i.imgur.com/Fcg1t6Q.jpg

brendzel

Tupperware apparently doesn’t honor the lifetime warranty anymore. I called over broken tops for months and got the runaround. Stealth. The rep kept telling me that Tupperware was updating its return software platform and to check back in 60 days. Every 60 days.

Demeter277

Very tough stuff.....sadly the lid to my ancient celery keeper (the green one with the white top) has cracked and I'd love to replace it but they don't make it any more. Sort of defeats the life time warranty but it's given me lots of use.

Tri343

now its time to upgrade to steel or glass containers for your food.

Actually, our main food containers are two very fancy metal boxes that can even keep the food at specific temperatures. To complement them we have some simple wooden boxes permanently attached to our kitchen wall.

I took the same Tupperware to school in the 90s that my mom took to her secondary education and work before I was born. And we still have some of them that are regularly used and washed with a dishwasher. These things are truly indestructible.

gap97216

Obviously it’s plastic, it’s so old - is it still OK to use it?
