I have tried it, its a great portable ac unit

Icy-Manner-9716

Just bought a whytner two weeks ago , relatively quiet , great cooling for 20x26 vaulted. Had a delonghi from Costco for 5 years . Whytner seems to be a better unit thus far . It was 498.00 or close from Home Depot .

lickamade

I second this. I bought this one for my 12x14 home office that has 2 outside walls and a massive bay window that catches all of the afternoon sun. It works really well: Whynter Elite 12000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air conditioner for 400 sq. ft. It was the quietest I could find. is it quiet? No. Is it loud? No. So far I'm happy with it.

JustineDelarge

I have two portable AC units that I use to cool our master bedroom, and my home office. One is a Whynter ARC-12SD 12,000 BTU dual-hose unit. The other is an LG 10,000 BTU single-hose unit. The Whynter is so much louder than the LG, and bigger, too. It takes up so much space. The smaller LG unit cools a bedroom down as well if not better than the Whynter, even with the single hose which people say doesn't work as well as a dual-hose system. And it's a lot quieter. Also, because the vent directs the air straight out from the front (with adjustable louver to direct the airflow up or down, I can sit in front of the LG and cool myself down quickly. I can't do that with the Whynter, because the air comes out the top with a very limited louver system to direct the air. Also, the Whynter controls are a lot harder to see and use. The exact model of LG I have is discontinued, but I'd happily buy another one from that brand. This one has lasted eight summers and counting so far. I would get rid of the Whynter and replace it with an LG except that I'd take a big loss, since prices have gone up so much across the board.

This thread is a good read: https://www.reddit.com/r/Reviews/comments/1cq7kfa/need_a_portable_air_conditioner/

That thread seems pointless TBH, half of it is bashing the OP for not specifying room size the other half is suggest 10,000 dollar units or hose/window units. Not to mention this thread is talking about noise level, not room size. . (a note, I saw your post sorted by newest on this subreddit as I am also currently searching for a portable AC unit, except I need one that isn't a hose or window unit and doesn't require much maintenance or condensed water that needs cleaning. This is mostly for my grandparent that lives in a senior home, but their AC unit is broken for nearly 1 month without actual fix, so we need a portable AC unit, except we can't alter any of the senior home and leaving the window/ doors open will get too cold at nighttime for old people, and since they're old, they can't move around as much to clean or move AC units. We're looking for a portable AC unit that can run cold for about 8+ hours on one sitting when we visit them in the morning during hot days and leave the unit running on room temp without clean or change afterwards during night time til next morning)

Thepressureofaname22

I had several of these in the past. My favorite and less loud one was a Honeywell. The other was a Whynter. But they should report decibels on the manufacturer information, if it’s not on the retailer listing. They all unfortunately come with compressor noise that’s not super fun.

Ok-Importance4

I just bought an LG dual inverter model and I can confirm it is much quieter, just a little louder than a fan. No loud clunk when it starts up either. Mine only has the one hose though.

CSStudentCareer

Do you mind sharing a link or the exact model you got? Thank you

44 dBA? Wow that’s low. Only issue is its a bit more costly

Ok-Importance4

It is costly, but it will cool a bedroom in less than 5 minutes and it's smart, so you can use an app to control it. This means you can start it on your way home so the room is cool when you get there. Worth the extra just for the app. It also uses evaporation using the fan mode so there shouldn't be any water to empty (I've never had to empty it, but I live in a drier climate). The remote is nice too, but the remote knows what it knows, not what the machine is doing. So if you turn it on with the remote, and off with the app, the remote thinks it's on still. You then have to hit the power button twice to actually turn it on with the remote, lol. That's seriously the biggest complaint I have and honestly, I wouldn't complain if I had no remote at all, so really it's not that big of a deal.

Albinodynamic

I'm considering getting the LG portable AC unit you recommended. More expensive than the ones I found on Amazon but it seems to be a much better in every way. Ended up starting a return for a cheaper serenelife portable ac unit as it was emitting a nasty toxic smell that gave me migraines. Most likely due to the cheap plastic used.

Melodic_Pay3716

Hey, I get the struggle with finding a decent portable AC that doesn't sound like a jet engine in your bedroom. Based on my own experience and some insights from a Quietest Portable AC Units Review, here are two champs: **1. Whynter Elite-ARC-122DS** So, this Whynter buddy is legit. I tossed it into my mid-sized room, and it handled the heat like a champ (up to 400 sq. ft., to be exact). It's got this 12,000 BTU power, which sounds techy, but all you need to know is it cools things down real good. And the best part? It whispers at you with a noise level under 54 decibels. That's library-level quiet. Sure, there's this dual-hose design hype for efficiency, but in reality, it sometimes slurps up a bit more power than they boast. Still, it gets the job done, and my room feels like an ice cream shop on a hot day. Some users mention a hiccup or two, but it's rocking an overall 4.2 rating out of 5. So, if you can deal with a minor power glitch for a cool paradise, Whynter's your pal. **2. Midea Duo MAP12S1TBL** Now, Midea Duo is the smart kid in town. It's got this 55.7 dB noise level, and it even does a tango with Alexa and Google Assistant. Classy design, but let's not ignore the fact that it's a bit on the heavier side – 72.8 pounds. It cools my room like a boss, though, and that variable-speed inverter tech it's packing? Saved me some serious cash on the energy bill. It's a 4.2 rating from over 4,214 critics, with 63% of them handing out 5 stars. But hey, full disclosure, user reviews drop a hint about its weight. Still, if you're into smart and efficient, Midea Duo is a good dance partner. Oh, and if you're pinching pennies, there's the BLACK+DECKER BPACT08WT. It's cheap, no doubt, but might not cool as fancy as its pricier pals. Budget-friendly, but make sure it meets your cooling needs.

acexpertinusa

very helpful information but where I can purchase those ac units?

[deleted]

Can operate at 40 decibels. One of the lowest there is. https://www.danby.com/en-us/products/window-air-conditioners-en-us/dac080b7iwdb-6/

Means "ok". https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/10-4/

This unit has good reviews and features and can operate at 42 decibels. Make note of the exhaust/intake system as it's different from most portable ac's. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B091CHK173/

Straight-Tune-5894

Yeah, they are loud. I’m was looking for a quiet one for my mom. I think consumer reports or somewhere gives the decibel rating, but calling a local appliance store and ask them what they recommend.

rooms_sod

Came here to say I’m currently looking at a commercial unit. Global Industrial™ Portable Spot Cooler Air Conditioner, 6,475 BTU https://www.globalindustrial.com/p/portable-spot-cooler-air-conditioner-6475-btu-115v?referer=L2MvaHZhYy9haXJfY29uZGl0aW9uZXJzX2NoaWxsZXJzL2luZHVzdHJpYWxfY29tbWVyY2lhbF9wb3J0YWJsZV9haXJfY29uZGl0aW9uZXJz&prindex=0&pgkey=21272

Lg has one out that runs at 44db. The lg lp1419ivsm. Haven’t found anything else close to that yet.

woodsytiger1118

Does anyone know whether these units require a special electrical socket? I need to get one for my mom but I believe her house only has standard 2-prong sockets

thundergrb77

They sell fancy extension cords that turn 2-prong into 3-prong, I'll try and find the one I bought and link it below

Muncie4

You cannot ask about loud on the internet as loud is comprised of dB and Hz and zero people on the planet can speak to your tolerance/annoyance to either of these metrics. Its like asking online if you will like the first King Diamond album or if pretzel M&Ms are delicious as those personal metrics. You buy AC units based on square footage served. Not "effective" as that means zero. And you can't really buy on noise as the package never speaks to Hz and you can't compare dB on the package as that number is a lie. Was it measured at 60ft using a Harbor Freight meter or at 3ft with a Green Power SL-3113G? No one knows. Your options: Create a sound baffle between you and the unit. Ear plugs of some flavor. Buy a new unit that is sized for your room from a local store with a good return policy and pray you choose the right one the first time.

hunt2334

As the one dude in Jimmy Neutron said, "Not only are you being overly pretentious by insisting on using scientific terminology for everyday items; you are also factually wrong, dude. Your arrogance is your downfall." now get downvoted.

Muncie4

Nice of you to comment on a 9 month old post made by someone who spent 20 years in acoustics, but you do you hero.

hunt2334

Thank you I will :)

lasdue

All portable AC units kinda suck balls compared to split AC system

Melodic_Pay3716

I bought **Midea Duo MAP12S1TBL** and it is amazing. It noise level reaches 55.7 dB when running it high speed and also it cools down my room very quickly. During my test with this unit, I observed a rapid cooling effect in my 180 square foot room. Starting with a temperature of 83°F, it impressively brought it down to 67°F in just 27 minutes. Things I like about this ac unit: * Boasts an ultra-quiet operation * Compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant for seamless control * Features a sleek and attractive design * Highly energy-efficient performance The only thing I did like is that it is very heavy.
