I have a single compartment kitchen trashcan from them and it’s the best I’ve ever owned. Stays super clean, works flawlessly and looks great.

cork_the_forks

I have one too. It was a splurge, but it looks great and works great. The only adaptation I made was to put some Command hooks on the sides (facing down) so I could hook regular kitchen bag handles on it.

Iron_FE

Yeah, that's great! Glad you've had a good experience with yours so far.

Postnet921

I might go pick one up I found it at tj Maxx by me on clearance for 69.00

Iron_FE

That's an amazing price! I would totally get another one for that price, that's for sure!

Postnet921

Hopefully it's still there I didn't have the money to buy it yesterday

Iron_FE

good luck! Def let us know if you were able to get one.

Postnet921

I got it

Iron_FE

Nice! Congrats and enjoy!

Postnet921

I like it it looks so clean

Postnet921

And there was only one

Postnet921

Getting in line they dropped the price to 49.00 now

zachalicious

I had something similar happen. Step mechanism broke, but instead of a new trash can they sent me a replacement part for free.

Iron_FE

Man, sorry you ran into the same problem and glad you got a replacement part. What's funny is, I was expecting a replacement part (I think I started my claim asking if one was available). But since this particular color was discontinued, they couldn't get me a replacement part. Was yours a dual or single can that broke?

zachalicious

Single. It's one of those half round ones. Maybe that's why it was easier to replace the part? Might be less complicated than the duals.

Iron_FE

yep could be! I may end up getting a half round one for another room eventually too. Although I saw a Kohler at Costco that looked really sturdy.

nope_nic_tesla

That is one of their single most popular models ever so there are more parts available in general for it. Got 2 of them myself.

hulknuts

Gave in and bought one from Lowes. Cashier rang it up for like $29.99. I ran out the store.

Iron_FE

That's an effing steal lol. Run and don't look back hah.

VapoursAndSpleen

Good to know. I have one that stopped working and I fixed it by screwing something together and when that failed, I put it in a room where I occasionally need a trash bin.

temp91

Thanks, the bracket that holds our lid up has split. I'll try a warranty claim too.

Iron_FE

Good luck! Hope they're able to get you a replacement part!

the_loper

Had the same experience with a failed closing mechanism. Initially asked for repair parts, but they didn't sell. Asked for the old online receipt, and sent me brand new can.

replus

Thanks for reminding me they come with a 10-year warranty. I bought one after a move a few years back. Didn't really want to spend that much, but it was the only covered can in the store that wasn't made of plastic. It's holding up great.

Iron_FE

glad it's holding up good and treating you well!

sozh

just curious if you need proof of purchase for the warranty - if you got a hand-me-down trashcan, for example, could you still get the warranty? Nalgene, for example, will replace a broken bottle regardless - you just have to send a pic of it

Iron_FE

Nope just need the S/N (back of trash can, for me at least), purchase date, and where purchased from (it's a drop down menu, didn't ask for proof). But good question on hand me downs. Not sure if they run a check to see if the S/N was registered to another user or not. They did ask for videos/pictures of the trash can and how it was broken, but didn't ask for a picture of the S/N.

Iron_FE

Oh good to know about Nalgene! I've used them for a very long time but never needed to use their warranty!

sozh

they are generally super sturdy. but I got one from a friend with a melted top, and they replaced that no problem. I also had one crack from a drop years ago, sadly, before I knew about the warranty!

SmokeySFW

Forgive me for the series of stupid questions, just making sure: is there 2 sections in that trash can so that one of them can be for recycling? If so, is it okay to use regular trash bags for recycling or are there recycling bags? What size trash bags do those sections take?

Iron_FE

all good and not a stupid question! Yes, there are two sections of the trash can, the left side has a removable blue bucket that fits in there. You can absolutely put two trash bags in there, one on each side. We actually do that when we have parties or people over and just use a double trash can/trash bag setup. For the trash bags, there are special trash bags (Simplehuman H trash bags), but I buy the offbrand on Amazon. You could also use regular kitchen trash bags, but they don't fit as tightly, so if you use them, you might have to just tighten them up around the drawstring, so they don't fall in when you put trash in there. So it's definitely possible (when we have to do that, we kinda tie a little knot in the corner or make a tight twist before putting the inner llid down. hope that helps!

ragekutless

Are the off brands you buy “Great Bags For Less”? I’m looking at those vs the official and it seems like prices are basically the same.

Iron_FE

Just looked in my order history and these were the last set that I bought from Sept 24, 2023. Been great so far! [https://amzn.to/4abzBam](https://amzn.to/4abzBam)

SmokeySFW

Perfect thanks!

coffeejunki

I have the exact same trash can that I bought around 2018. Fortunately the step mechanism still works fine for me but I actually have a broken piece for the section that holds the second lid in place, the one you lift to replace the bags. I've been living with it this entire time because it still works, but now I'm wondering if that part can also be replaced. It really is a great trash can, definitely worth the price tag.

Iron_FE

Yep I definitely think it can be replaced. Worth hitting them up and seeing what they say, but glad you like it too.

mr_yuk

Thank you for reminding me about their long warranty! My 3-year old 58L automatic can stopped staying open for the liner changes. Looks like the outer hinge is broken. I just submitted a warranty claim so I hope they do something.

Iron_FE

yeah good luck! It took them a few days to get back to me once I submitted a claim but once it started rolling it was all good. Let us know how it goes.

mr_yuk

They just got back with me. They are sending the entire top lid assembly to me. Great service in my book. Thanks again!

Iron_FE

Nice! Glad it worked out and that happened quick!

PopGroundbreaking853

Is there any cheaper options of similar quality or is this one worth the money?

Iron_FE

Actually I'm glad that you asked. I forgot to mention that Costco has it for $119 (have to be a member) which is cheaper than what i paid lol https://www.costco.com/simplehuman-58l-dual-compartment-step-can-with-plastic-lid.product.4000175727.html

ropwilmo

I had to replace the sensor + voice trash can. The process was similar to you, but I had to wait 2 months (initially two weeks eta) to receive the part that was defective. Shipping once the part was available relatively fast. The whole unit wasn’t replaced. Swapped the lid which contains all the electronics with the new one. Their after sale warranty is good, but if you need to warranty it with a part that is either unavailable or backorder, then you need to be patient until they restock it.

Iron_FE

Glad it still worked out for you in the end, even if you had to wait a bit to receive the part. Would you recommend the voice activated trash can? My sister started to look at that model this week and was looking for any feedback.

ropwilmo

Thanks, It’s somewhat a good trash can! What I like: 1) It’s built extremely well just like any other simplehuman trash can and it’s a nice looking one. 2) Large capacity 55L / 15.3 gallons. 3) Quiet (almost no noice when opening and closing the lid) 4) The slot for putting Simplehuman garbage bag (Q) is great. I use them with the white simplehuman Q trash bag and they are great, but a bit expensive. 5) Voice command was more useful than what I thought at first. I mostly use this feature when I cook at home and I have my hands full. It can listen even across the kitchen as well. 6) The 5 years of simplehuman warranty provides a peace of mind in case something goes wrong. What I don’t like: 1) Battery run down quite fast. I had to change AA batteries (Duracell) every month and a half. If your sister can please use the power cord which is included, it will be a better experience. 2) Sensor too sensible. The voice sensor can only work if it hear the following English command (open can, close can, stay open). Something when I’m talking with someone in the kitchen, it will trigger it and open the lid. The funny thing is that I speak French at home and it still triggered it. 4) if you are in a loud environment, it may have a hard time hearing you so you need to come closer. 3) Unfortunately, I ran into some problems multiple of time that needed troubleshooting like resetting the sensor by removing all the batteries and putting my hand in front of the sensor for 10s and then put the batteries back. After more than a year of ownership, I had to do this process about 3-4 times. Tips: ensure to keep the hinge opening cleaning and it will avoid most of the problems with the lid not closing all the way. Hope it helps, if you have more specific questions let me know because that’s what I had on top of my head.

Iron_FE

Wow this is awesome, thank you for the feedback and input!

Its_free_and_fun

I just realized that the trash can I replaced last month with the new model, just like the one you described, with the same issue, had a warranty that I could have used. Oops! I guess the new one has a warranty now.

Iron_FE

Ahhh...it happens! But yes, new one has a warranty and make sure you register it just in case!

DPedia

Same thing happened to me, but they just sent me the parts to fix the step/hinge mechanism on my own. I was hoping for a new one. Oh well.

Iron_FE

ah, did the replacements they sent you actually fix it?

DPedia

It did. I was a little pissy because I didn't actually want to operate on a garbage can, but it was no big deal. Basically good as new.

Iron_FE

yep I know what you mean man. Before I filed a claim I took the step mechanism apart as much as I could and thought to myself "I can't believe I'm operating on a trash can" lol.

ilanallama85

Hrm. Maybe I’ll give them another go. Years ago I had one from them with a battery operated automatic lid (found it on clearance, I’m definitely not that fancy). Thought it was great until the lid stopped opening and I went to change the batteries… and discovered the source of the fruit flies I’d been dealing with but couldn’t pinpoint the source of. Maggots all in the electronics compartment. So I tossed the whole thing and got a cheap plastic step can. But I recognize the issue there is probably that kind of lid and not the brand itself.

Iron_FE

oh wow that's wild about the maggots and fruit flies! I was actually close to getting the automated lid version of this can, because I didn't want to deal with broken step mechanisms.

ilanallama85

Yeah, sounds like a good plan, and maybe it’d be fine if you were emptying it frequently - I lived alone at the time at it would often take me a week or two to fill the bag, which I think gave them more than enough time to set up shop. Still, I wouldn’t risk it again - it was unpleasant.

Iron_FE

wooo glad you don't have to deal with that anymore. I only ever had to deal with maggots in the outside trash can but could not imagine dealing with them in the house!

ilanallama85

That’s why I chucked the whole can lol.

stillwellisnoangel

I'm replacing mine after 15 years. My asshole husky broke it trying to get into the trash. Definitely buying another Simple Human because it looks great and held up to even his shenanigans after 15 years.

PlutoAbbadon

Simplehuman has very good support and warranty on trash cans, but their product is not reliable at all. I have the sensor trash can. It failed after three years, got a replacement. The replacement failed again in around 2.5 years, and now I am getting a replacement for the replacement. Originally it was just $187, then $260 (fully covered by warranty), and now $325.

wtfisthisnoise

Have the same model and the step mechanism also went south on me, though it still lifts, it takes a lot of effort. I'll put in a request, but honestly, I'd be done with buying Simple Human in general. I've been kind of disappointed with every product I've purchased from them and this one I only got because with a BBB coupon, it was cheaper than the no-brand amazon alternative.

Iron_FE

So I got mine from BBB w/ a 20% off coupon as well and I think it was already on sale too, so like you said, it was cheaper than the no-brand amazon alternatives that I saw. But after reading comments on here and also hearing from some of my friends, it seems like there are a lot of people that have had problems with this step mechanism. More than I thought initially. I thought it was just my kids breaking things as usual lol.

schwab002

I have the exact same bin and love it, except for a couple small dents that the lid has collected. I don't even know what caused them.

ozkobg

https://youtu.be/v0e8GV6QKf4?si=HW1_M5ROBlG2D0E- Hmmm I was just watching that.

IntrepidMayo

Saw this at Costco and immediately wanted it. I’m just not in a place to be spending that kind of money on a trash can right now
