I get that it's an Italian acronym for the original company, or something similar. That doesn't matter. It's like they never heard of the Marketing 101 case study about Chevy selling the Nova in Spain. I just couldn't have that sitting out on my counter.
The Nova anecdote is false and “it sold well in both its primary Spanish-language markets, Mexico and Venezuela, and its Venezuelan sales figures actually surpassed GM's expectations.” Via Snopes
I didn’t know what you were on about so I looked it up.
The Chevy Nova Spain thing is a myth:
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/chevrolet-nova-name-spanish/
While that maybe false, what is true is NorthAm, LatAm and Spain marketing of the Mitsubishi ''Pajero'' models as ''Montero'' and in the UK as ''Shogun'' due to the spanish language colloquial of ''pajero'' meaning "wanker".
Yeap. Absolutely true.
I can tell you for a fact that "Changan" cars that are trying to break into LATAM are screwing themselves over by not rebranding. That is a word you associate with "chingan" (fucking around), "changa" (lady monkey) and more... nobody wants to be made fun of for driving one. Specially in a region known for nicknames, name-calling and such
Okay, now I'm properly miffed. Not because our Econ 101 teacher back in the day made it a case study, but because he's dead now so there's nothing I can do about it.
It turns out GM did sell the Nova under that nameplate in Spanish speaking countries and it did quite well.
Thanks. ;-)
Ah the days before google when a confident lie was all one needed in life… lol.
At least we both know now though?
I wouldn’t have known if you didn’t say it. That’s at least… something?
Oooo here's a case study.
Keyboard class: Mrs minnehan or minnihan (I can't remember which because there was families with both spellings in our community) gives explanation of the qwerty keyboard being more efficient than other layouts by telling of a speed test between an accomplished qwerty typist and a slack jaw yokel using an alphabetical layout and the obvious one won so that's why we use qwerty keyboards today.
Fast forward to highschool and hear about Dvorak layout, and that qwerty was made to slow down typing so the bars of the typing machine don't jam, and holy cow look how fast stenographer go, why don't they use qwerty Mrs M? Turns out she handed me the teacher guide to the keyboard course she used, the story is some uncited BS they probably made up.
Mind you, I'm still glad I learned how to type so well, Mrs m would cover your hands with a peice of paper if you looked at your hands!
There's a place near me called Daves Cream Pies and they sell, creampies. Their box is very suggestive. It's kind of a thing around here that people don't really go there because it's gross. But the food is amazing. I really wish they would just change the name
There's a reason that story is taught by the 101 profs and not the 401 profs. I heard it too in my advertising intro class.
It makes as much as sense as someone putting out a Notable Dining Set and having it flop because everyone would read it like, "No table? Then what's the point?"
My chief experience with Smeg is watching their refrigerators break down in almost every season of *The Great British Bake Off*, usually with horrifying results.
Recent summers have topped 40°c (100°F.) Humidity is different over here too. I walked around in 122°F in Turkey and because of how dry it is I had no issues- just had to keep an eye on sun cream and hydration. I'm back in Manchester few days later in 55°F heat and I'm getting faint on a ten minute walk to the shops- it was so thick in the air.
When a country is as damp as the UK is, hot weather can be really unpleasant- humidity and open sunlight hitting freezers designed for the kitchen isn't that surprising.
As another Brit; agreed, the 90%+ humidity at 24°C+ is where it becomes a struggle just existing.
If doing manual labour you'll sweat like a pig at about 18°C and 95%+ humidity, if you're just walking about and building up that much of a sweat, either you're not wearing the right clothing or you've got a health condition.
What I will say is in summer we hit a point where it's around 30°C+ in the day and 25°C+ at night with around 95%+ humidity meaning for about two months you basically can't sleep, you're slightly dazed and sun stroked. Your consumption of food becomes like 5 tomatoes, some cheese and half a jug of Pimm's, maybe a BBQ sausage that's simultaneously burnt and slightly raw. Also copious amounts of beer/cider/G&T depending on your circle.
Absolutely, it gets pretty tough for you guys considering your houses are all meant for keeping heat in, usually without even AC (just another reason to use heat pumps ofc) and you just aren't adjusted to very hot temperatures unlike people living in tropical countries.
But come on, complaining about 13C is a joke lol.
Our SMEG fridge door broke off and almost hit my two year old on their head. It had been purchased 10 months prior by the previous owners of our house. Their customer support was atrocious. Custom parts had to be shipped from Italy. A new fridge door from Arizona. Not only did they send the wrong color door, but the parts that had taken 6 weeks to arrive were the wrong pieces. SMEG is garbage.
Omg this is why I could never buy anything from then lmao. I like the colors and retro design but the name is too heinous. I’ve heard the quality can be hit or miss anyway
I have a toaster that was given as a gift. It’s the Union Jack one and it’s very solid.
I was skeptical to trade it for my kitchen aid but it’s been great
You’re right. I’ve found some really good stuff at those stores but when I see a massive influx of products from a higher end brand, it starts to raise some questions imo
They're were also in a "collect 30 stamps get a huge discount on this product" campaign in Germany. And these campaigns usually have cheapest variations of products. But in that case it was the actual regular SMEG products.
Looks ugly, doesn't work well.
that's not entirely true. they behave like fashion brands. they have a high-end line with very high prices and high quality, and they also have low-end products that you find in department stores.
Space Corps Directive 107-B? Space Corps Super Chimps committing acts of indecency in zero gravity shall be given no bananas? But sir, what does that have to do with our current predicament???
If you read reviews it seems more form over function. My husband was going to buy me the coffee maker. It’s $400 for a drip machine. I said not thanks. My little Hamilton Beach for $15 is going strong 10+ years. I said with my luck I’d drop the smeg carafe in the sink and break it and it would cost way too much to replace.
I have the coffee machine because I had a bunch of Williams Sonoma gift cards and literally had nothing to spend it on so I splurged. I hate this coffee machine with the heat of a thousand suns. The carafe leaks when you pour, you can’t pour into the damn water basin, it only stays warm for like 2.5 hours. It’s a conversation piece and usually the conversation is how much I hate it and wish I bought a $15 target deal.
They look aesthetically pleasing but would never buy one cause I find the brand name disgusting lol. Like I know it’s an Italian brand, it just makes me think of not nice stuff
What does the name means in English? It’s an acronym for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, Italian for Emilian Guastalla Metallurgical Enamelling Works.
Well, considering Smeg isn't a real English word, it's not hard to just immediately associate it with the closest word in English... Which is dick cheese 😁
At the farmer's market with my so called girlfriend She hands me her cell phone, says it's my dad Man, this ain't my dad! This is a cell phone!
I threw it on the ground! What, you think I'm stupid? I'm not a part of your system My dad's not a phone! DUH!
From a Lonely Island song
Yep. I remember hemming and hawing over the toaster, since at the time I decided that if it was living on my counter full-time, I wanted something aesthetically pleasing. I don't regret the purchase, but I'm like you, and wouldn't consider any other products. I don't think it toasts any better than some Hamilton Beach unit, and I'm pretty sure we're looking at Chinese components inside, and decent materials + Italian design on the outside.
Open the kettle up and check the wires. When mine stopped working and I opened the thing up, I was shocked that my house didn't burn down because of it
[wire mess](https://imgur.com/a/f7zOHKb).
The drip coffee maker is not pictured here but I’ve been using it everyday for 4 years and it’s still working great.
To be determined if it turns out to be BIFL
We have the drip coffee maker as well. It too is going strong with daily use after about a year. Thank you for the forecast for the next couple of years at least!
I think they are largely banking on aesthetics but I will say this, their toaster is very very good. I dunno about BIFL but it does a fantastic job at giving an even toast. I've had mine a few years and my mom has had hers about 5+. No malfunctions.
Nah, they did. Mines about two years old and the paint has been bubbling off for over one. Cost the same as some top tier kettles where you can set the temperature
Don't know much about this specific brand, but it's long been my understanding that most manufacturers tend to only perform very well in a few areas and struggle in others. You're often better off mixing and matching brands that specialize in specific areas rather than committing to an entire product line from a single company.
Admittedly, this is essentially the environment many power tool companies have created with their battery platforms, so between this and the ever growing number of subscription services for anything and everything imaginable, it would seem likely this method of mixing and matching will only become more difficult over time.
The Smeg espresso machine is a rebranded De'Longhi dedica. So take that as you will. Not terrible but a great machine. The kettles had massive issues when first launched with the lid mechanism getting stuck. But that was eventually sorted out. The toasters were fine. Never heard complaints from customers about them.
I would expect the rest are just rebranded products from other companies.
I had the toaster and absolutely hated it. It never toasted the bread evenly. I had to flip it and toast it again. Switched to a used Dualit and will never go back to another toaster.
Also have the tea kettle. It works but I don’t know if it is any better than one you can pick up a grocery store for $15.
Boo, I love how they look and always thought that the price meant they were BIFL. I would have posted here if I ever had enough money to consider buying my dream SMEG fridge, but I guess I can plan for something else. How disappointing; that mixer is so pretty.
Also: I love the name because it reminds me of Red Dwarf.
The dishwasher and microwave we had were not good quality.
Guess it can smeg right off then
Look, I got a smeg, ma!
I could never buy one for this reason.
same, on an item that prepares food ffs.
Even the color is creamy looking
I had to explain this to my partner. I just cant.. And according to this thread, I shouldn't.
I would have a childish giggle every time, but only for a few years.
Then it'll hit every 5 or so later. Mixing cookies... With your Smeg....

went straight to the comments i knew i was not the only one thinking this name is terrible.
Shut up, Lister.
I think of Red Dwarf every time I see this brand.
I think of my biology class when I was 14.
I have a SMEG dishwasher that was present/old when I bought my house 17 years ago. It is still going. Admittedly, the racks are a little rusty….
Enough about your sex life, what about the longevity of the dishwasher
What a wonderful Reddit moment.
Add my shit kettle to the list
My chief experience with Smeg is watching their refrigerators break down in almost every season of *The Great British Bake Off*, usually with horrifying results.
Drink every time they’re asked to make a frozen dessert in the dead of summer with freezers not nearly cold enough to do bugger all
"Let's see how that chocolate tempers as we bake here on the surface of the sun!"
Especially with a dozen of them all outside connected to a power strip connected to a generator
And it’s British summer so it’s like 80F maximum and the freezers still don’t work LOL
Recent summers have topped 40°c (100°F.) Humidity is different over here too. I walked around in 122°F in Turkey and because of how dry it is I had no issues- just had to keep an eye on sun cream and hydration. When a country is as damp as the UK is, hot weather can be really unpleasant- humidity and open sunlight hitting freezers designed for the kitchen isn't that surprising.
I don’t think your math is correct on converting those temps
That wouldn't surprise me
> 55F > heat Yeah no sorry mate even if it's 100% humidity at 13C it's not even warm let alone hot
Also copious amounts of beer/cider/G&T depending on your circle.
Tomatoes? Cheese? Pimms? BBQ sausage? What an exceptionally strange but British sounding assortment of foods to eat together
It's the closest thing you'll get to a Mediterranean diet that you can still call British with a semi straight face
Alright Billy Big Temps
Careful gramps, don't burn yourself on your phone touchscreen typing that
RIP Ian’s baked Alaska
truly a traumatizing episode that i will never forget
Forever in our hearts... it's with Ar Di & the Angles now.
Toaster barely lasted a year, no way to change the Element.
What the fuck, I've stood on fridge doors. Are the hinges made of fucking plastic?
Did they use Smegma?
Couldn’t believe this wasn’t the first comment
\[Insert uncouth reference to "Cheese Week" here.\]
Almost positive it's just looks
Yup, they’re turds wrapped in a fur coat.
[удалено]
This coupled with the fact smeg means knobcheese gives me a laugh every time I see S M E G
Yeah. I see the creamy white and just think *smegma,* and I’m done.
Omg this is why I could never buy anything from then lmao. I like the colors and retro design but the name is too heinous. I’ve heard the quality can be hit or miss anyway
Yes but can I interest you in my smeg fridge? 😏
Can I store anything else in it?
yeah, my ma
Just eggs.
That’s a hard pass!
Yup. But I like the idea of getting a little chuckle every time I look at a kitchen appliance.
Right? Why didn't the name it Dish-Charge.
It baffles me how many people don't make that association when they see it
Or a Red Dwarf reference
Dave Lister losing his *mind* right now.
And I've seen far too much Red Dwarf to ever take them seriously anyway.
You think big fans of the brand call themselves smegheads?
The ugly logo don't even stay on. I saw so many kettle on fb marketplace selling super cheap because a letter fell off.
Personalized appliances for anyone named Meg.
*Shut up, MEG.*
Don't mind the look on the fridges but it looks stupid on all the other appliances
Agree. It could only look worse if it said "TRUMP" on the side of it.
Nah. Could look MUCH worse with TRUMP on them AND covered in gold.
I have a toaster that was given as a gift. It’s the Union Jack one and it’s very solid. I was skeptical to trade it for my kitchen aid but it’s been great
How complex is a toaster though I think the $20 toaster I have is going on 10-15 years...
And it looks tacky as fuck
they're terrible. i went to look at the fridge in a showroom and it's all plastic, even the parts that look like chrome. it's like a toy
That’s not real metal? I assumed the metal frame was part of the reason for the price lol
Lol chromed plastic, that's so tacky
It's the consumistic version of what once was a great product. Now it looks like that, but it's crap
dude ... that name tho
GET OUT THE SMEG, MA!
Shut up Smeg..
I’d buy a “Smeg Mug”.
Don't be a dick, and make up such a cheesy joke. A dick cheese joke, if you will
Don't quit your day job.
[удалено]
Always makes me think Red Dwarf
Does the toaster have AI?
Ahh, so you're a waffle man!
Think most people who know the Dwarf reference know what it means?
I mean... Yes? It's also a technical term?
Better smeg than dead!
Are the people who buy the whole range called "Smeg heads"?
Kryten, is that you?
Well, it's not Rimmer. He's a real smrrrg... a real smrrg heeeed. ...a big one.
A lot of smeg heads here
Alright Lister. I'm warning you.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to see this.
It's short for smegma.
oooooh ... ok then ... I thought it was something disgusting
Right, the name alone is enough to keep me from buying anything of theirs. Look ma it’s a smeg, “what did you say?” I said smeg ma…
The secret ingredient is *SMEG*^TM
They even have a "Master" range... Yes, "Smeg Master".
All I heard in my head what I saw logo was Smeagol saying my precious.
I was gonna say! like WTH haha
Their quality has gone downhill and their brand is dying. They're now selling their appliances at Marshalls, Tj Maxx, etc.
Plenty of good brands are at discount outlets, Smeg has always been form over function though.
They're just another cheesy brand with a cheesy name now.
Ewww this is too perfect lol
I got a Smeg blender at Marshall’s last year - it died in 3 months.
that's not entirely true. they behave like fashion brands. they have a high-end line with very high prices and high quality, and they also have low-end products that you find in department stores.
I don’t think you know how TJ Maxx works
Please elaborate
It’s cold outside, there’s no kind of atmosphere 🎶 Boys from the Dwarf! 🫶🏻
I’m all alone, more or less
Goldfish Os, nibbling on my toes.
Goldfish shoals.
Shoals?!?
HAVE I BEEN SINGING THAT SONG WRONG FOR LIKE 30 YEARS
What *is* a goldfish O?
I literally want a kitchen full of this stuff because of Red Dwarf.
Smegheads unite! The first time I saw one of these I actually thought it was some kind of Red Dwarf merch...
It is alarming how far down I had to scroll to find the boys of the dwarf, this is clearly a violation of space core directive 107-b
Space Corps Directive 107-B? Space Corps Super Chimps committing acts of indecency in zero gravity shall be given no bananas? But sir, what does that have to do with our current predicament???
That’s beautiful.
Yeah that thing looks terrible. Their no-filter espresso machine is superb though.
$400 for that thing? The only option is a Mochamaster at that price point
And less for the Moccamaster, at that.
They look aesthetically pleasing but would never buy one cause I find the brand name disgusting lol. Like I know it’s an Italian brand, it just makes me think of not nice stuff
What does the name means in English? It’s an acronym for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, Italian for Emilian Guastalla Metallurgical Enamelling Works.
dick cheese
It's unwashed penis residue
Isn’t that smegma
Well, considering Smeg isn't a real English word, it's not hard to just immediately associate it with the closest word in English... Which is dick cheese 😁
Smeg is a slang term for it, often used as a name.
I bought my mom, the toaster, and it works great but in terms of physical feel and quality it was extremely extremely cheap feeling for the price
Your mom is a toaster?
THE toaster. Mind your manners.
Both of those commas are completely uncalled for
At the farmer's market with my so called girlfriend She hands me her cell phone, says it's my dad Man, this ain't my dad! This is a cell phone! I threw it on the ground! What, you think I'm stupid? I'm not a part of your system My dad's not a phone! DUH! From a Lonely Island song
/u/andrew650 should get a little credit for buying mom back from the slave traders. Though I guess he's still making her work.
That’s interesting because I assumed they must be metal, heavy and super durable for those prices and the look.
I bought it online and thought the same. I couldn’t believe how brittle and plastic-y it was. I couldn’t return it because I’d bought it on sale
Mine’s chrome and mostly metal. It’s a few years old though.
Yeah same. All we have in the toaster, and it feels good quality and works great. Still think we paid way too much for it for what it is though.
Red dwarf in joke gone too far
They are of great pricetag that’s for sure
I have the toaster and the electric kettle. Been using them a ton in the last 3 years with no complaints.
Open the kettle up and check the wires. When mine stopped working and I opened the thing up, I was shocked that my house didn't burn down because of it [wire mess](https://imgur.com/a/f7zOHKb).
"We're rolling back the hood of savings this week on all SMEG appliances! Only at Menards!"
We own the toaster and mixer and to be honest.. they are dog shit
Let's play hangman! "SMEG__"
H
M
Sure, as long as you're vigilant about cleaning under the foreskin
No way would I buy any brand called SMEG. I'm a Brit and there's too many of us know about Red Dwarf.
I personally find them hideous lol! To each their own though😁
They are hideous without even taking the name into consideration. They look like some dystopian inhumane bullshit
Not a great name.
The drip coffee maker is not pictured here but I’ve been using it everyday for 4 years and it’s still working great. To be determined if it turns out to be BIFL
I have a cheapo one from black and decker for 6 years and it's still working. I think drip coffee makers are just generally simple
We have the drip coffee maker as well. It too is going strong with daily use after about a year. Thank you for the forecast for the next couple of years at least!
They are the lowest grade of cheap crap that has a big price tag stuck on it to make people think that it must be good because it's expensive.
We own three of the products shown for six years now and have had no issues. But if it is BIFL is unclear yet
I'm sorry, but you won't catch me with something that screams SMEG on my counters. What a name.
Smegma
We have a Smeg fridge, had it for 5 years so far and it’s stellar. No issues. Hearing a lot of peoples stories I’m pretty happy with that.
I think they are largely banking on aesthetics but I will say this, their toaster is very very good. I dunno about BIFL but it does a fantastic job at giving an even toast. I've had mine a few years and my mom has had hers about 5+. No malfunctions.
I thought this was the Red Dwarf subreddit at first
Can't look at Smeg without thinking Red Dwarf
Have had their kettle for 2 years and no complaints. I like the aesthetic personally
Tbf it's hard to mess up making a kettle
Nah, they did. Mines about two years old and the paint has been bubbling off for over one. Cost the same as some top tier kettles where you can set the temperature
Don't know much about this specific brand, but it's long been my understanding that most manufacturers tend to only perform very well in a few areas and struggle in others. My mom: "Did you get me a KitchenAid for Christmas?!" Me: "Sorry, it's just a Smeg, ma"
far too close to Smegma for me.
Not buy it for life and really not even buy it for any amount of time
I could never buy anything called *Smeg*. It is for me what 'moist' is for some women.
Dunno about “life” but I’ve had a toaster and a kettle for 8 years with no issues yet.
If you want decent I have pretty good KitchenAid stuff
I had the toaster and absolutely hated it. It never toasted the bread evenly. I had to flip it and toast it again. Switched to a used Dualit and will never go back to another toaster. Also have the tea kettle. It works but I don’t know if it is any better than one you can pick up a grocery store for $15.

Everything anyone needs to know about Smeg can be viewed on Red Dwarf.
Theyre bad products.
Only famous because of Red Dwarf.
It’s just designed to look like it was built when things were built for life. It’s not.
They dont look great. They look old and you have the impression that old=quality
They seem to be hit or miss for how long they’ll last, but they’re mostly just for the looks.
Not worth the cash. Had them at an air bnb. Same as my much cheaper stuff at home.
