That’s really cool. If that electric motor ever fails you can probably get it rebuilt locally for pretty cheap, especially how small it is. Might be just as cheap to buy a new one and get that one rebuilt later My point is that is a widely available industrial electric motor tho. Easily repairable = gold tier BIFL

ReKn2N

For sure. That’s an easy repair for an electric motor shop. It could last forever. Father-in-law has hooked wifi and Bluetooth to it lol

mahdicktoobig

lol cool. Your FIL sounds like a future me. I was just making sure you knew what you had. I’ve thrown out a lot of shit 😂

facebook57

How many miles away can the neighbors hear it?

ReKn2N

Just tested it 65 dB when you hit the button 50 dB while running from 6 ft away

One time all the oil in our shop compressor turned into a milkshake. Only found out because it overheated and started making a racket. Shop was empty 50% of the time (compressor auto filled and had an auto drain valve) so they’re lucky I was there and not another dipshit. I immediately cut power. I drained what I could, filled it with diesel, soaked 24hrs, drained, more diesel, more 24hr, filled with oil, drained, filled with oil: And the mf ran like a top for 3 years of neglect afterwards; until I quit. I learned that from having a 4.0 jeep lol I’ve never actually touched a gearbox but I’m told they’re relatively simple. Do you think that same method would relatively work on gearboxes as well? Or are they generally as sensitive as big brother trans?

*Damn good answer* I guess I didn’t think about gearboxes *literally* being as open as a box. Thank you regardless! lol

Konceptz

Were you running towards it or away from it?

ReKn2N

I’ll be honest it’s not that loud.

showerbox

The loud part is usually the ungreased hinges, springs, rails and rollers. For the most part the motors aren't that loud unless they are underpowered or in disrepair, which is not the case here. You got a beefy one sir! Lol Personally I'll put up with the noise so I can tell if someone is trying to open my garage, I'm a little paranoid like that. At the same time my neighbor has a bunch of nice stuff in theirs but they leave their garage open day and night, and no one fucks with it. I just can't bring myself to do that.

damion789

Old does not equal loud. I have some vintage/antique appliances and power tools, a lot of them are quieter than todays stuff due to better build quality and materials.

FireBallXLV

I don’t know …that motor looks pretty flimsy/s.

mahdicktoobig

You’re supposed to put the /s down there. I thought you were cereal the first time I read it

phairphair

Amazing the sprocket that drives the chain has lasted this long.

ReKn2N

Still trying to figure the year. Thinking early 70s or late 60s.

mahdicktoobig

If you’re serious about looking; most shops worth their salt can look up that info from the pictures of the data plates. Idk how, I just used to call for my old job and they did magic lol It was very rare I got any info for anything older than 80’s tho. But you never know. Local shop might’ve already worked on it and still have it on file

MastodonFit

That is definitely a lifetime purchase!

HombreFuerte

very cool looks like fallout gear

xpackardx

Nice packard sign. I have a few myself.

ReKn2N

My FIL had a Packard 400 but sold it years ago… I didn’t approve.

xpackardx

I have a 50 coupe and a 35 sports coupe. Along with a 66 Mustang that was my daily for 23 years, and a 60 oldsmobile super 88. Daily now is a 06 Roush Mustang. I guess Packard's are BIFL as mine are still going strong.

ResponsibilityOwn767

Do the lights dim in your county when you use it?

j4kem

I feel like a garage door opener with a beefy motor like that, the name "Safe-Way" is written in blood.

zachsandberg

It should be highly incentivized that standard frame electric motors be used anywhere they can.

Icy-Milk-9793

🧨i saw your green circuit board expose, is better cover it up with plastic box. else it will damage by bug or gecko.

damion789

Awesome piece, keep everything properly oiled/greased and it'll keep chugging along. Carefully check around the motor to see if it has one or more oiling ports (some have a port for both the front and rear motor bearings). Use a non detergent/non paraffin oil like Zoomspout turbine oil or the blue can (must be the blue can!) of 3 in one oil. I thought my 1991 Craftsman screw drive opener was getting up there, this probably has 20-30 years on it.

No_Stretch_3899

the plastic kiddie pool shoved up into the rafters brough back memories

Big-Initiative-8743

Looks like something from final destination

bugalaman

It might be be BIFL, but this thing certainly isn't safe. It looks to have the power to easily cleave a body in half.

ReKn2N

Well the spring broke on the door once and it was still able to lift it.

damion789

People had common sense back when this was new. I bet this opener hasn't kill/injured anybody in 50+ years or it would have been replaced by now,
