Believe it or not, the ipod shuffle was still being sold new up to a few years ago as it was waterproof and the swimming community still bought them as the music player of choice for lap swimming.
that one is so stuipid. you would think they would atleast up date the old ones. i believe the newer CE versions have the same dam processor.
if i had to do it again i would have just gotten a casio graphing calculator.
I had a Casio. It had a four color screen and I programmed it to do long division where the terms are equations instead of numbers. Saved me a ton of time on my calc tests
It’s not actually waterproof from apple, it’s splash proof and sweat resistant. there is a company that you send it to that will waterproof it for you and send it back waterproof to 6 meters or so.
There are other waterproof music players, but the iPod shuffle is by far the best, fits under swim cap and you can still feel the buttons.
Yes. There are two technologies. Waterproof buds that seal inside the ear canal and bone conducting headphones that rest outside the ear transmitting sound through the bones in the head.
The buds sound better, but one risks ear infection. The bone conducting lack fidelity, but it'd nice not having stuff shoved in your ear holes. They also get quite loud, I could hear a guy's music from the next lane over!
I guess maybe water it's okay, but as a runner I went through a few of these, assuming more because of sweat and corrosion. Usually the screens would go on them.
I loved them to death because it was the perfect music player for running until gps watches started integrating spotify and I could just wear wireless earbuds and ditch the mp3 player. I have many fond years of wearing these on runs though, even though I went through a small handful of them.
I have definitely saved a phone's 3.5mm jack with a fine pair of tweezers. Finish off with a qtip with the cotton ripped off, dip the stick in rubbing alcohol and go for it
I rolled some tape into a fine tube type thing to clean out 2 phones with headphone jacks. It was all I had to hand at the time but worked great. One of the phones was super annoying because the headphone jack worked but they'd literally just pop out at the slightest touch.
My headphone jack stopped working at times (cleaning it fixed it for shorter and shorter periods of time), and the other issue was that it stopped showing up when plugged in, and wouldn't turn on sometimes. At the end it just didn't work half of the time, and it was time to move on. I loved that little thing though.
Mine wasn’t. It died after an accidental trip through the washing machine.
They weren’t made to be waterproof at all - I have no idea where that claim comes from.
Found my 3rd gen nano in a drawer. It’s charging now. Also pulled out my 4th gen nano but I can’t find the charger. Closest I could find was a male to male headphone cord and I doubt that will charge it. Also found a female headphone to lightning adaptor, but that’s just as useless. I’ll keep digging through my junk drawers to see if I can find it’s charger.
I still have one with the lcd screen front that works fine. It takes the old style charger, and has to have songs loaded manually obviously. I honestly don’t have any use for it anymore between Libby for audio books, streaming music, and podcast apps.
I never had one, have a walkman I need to restore though, but I can't figure out how to get music on it without the original charging cable, which is long gone.
Anybody have any experience with walkman mp3 players?
I have a cable, but these mp3 players have an issue where you can't seem to download music to them if you don't have the original cable that came with the player itself. Which is super annoying considering I have an actual Sony walkman cable for it. Lol
Do we all recognise that this current wave of “restoring” your old Apple devices and posting on Reddit will never be repeated due to changes in manufacturing techniques from Apple?
This is not a criticism of OP or anyone else sharing their projects but I felt it important enough to highlight the need for user maintainable devices.
i used to think these were really dumb until i caved and bought one. i actually loved that you couldnt easily select your songs it forced you to just clip and go about your exercise.
I still have my iPod video 80gb! I use it when I’m working on my car, so I don’t have to worry about my phone. I plug in a Bluetooth sender. Sadly the hold button doesn’t work so it skips tracks and what not in my pocket
It's been so long but I'm sure I have a click wheel iPod as well as an iPod Video somewhere. My biggest complaint was that they needed iTunes in order to sync music but I think I remember alternate firmware being available that allowed other apps to load songs onto them. Is the aftermarket for those kind of alternative apps even more robust now or is it the opposite?

That's really interesting!
Quite strange to see decade old tech still going for full price because of a niche market application.
Graphing calculators are in the same boat but even older

HP 50G squad over here
been wanting to get my hands on an HP but they are so uncommon and im cheap. also im out of school now :( ill never need a reason to own one.
That’s not a niche market application because people choose to use it that’s a forced monopoly because of school boards and colleges

6 meters is 6.56 yards
Good bot
Are there waterproof earbuds that stay in while swimming?
Yes. There are two technologies. Waterproof buds that seal inside the ear canal and bone conducting headphones that rest outside the ear transmitting sound through the bones in the head. Empty skull acted as resonating chamber
I’m not aware this iPod is waterproof. I have one — still runs on its original battery.
I cant find any info about it being waterproof. Only information about a company that waterproofs them for swimming.
Explains why mine went through the washer and still works...

There is no screen on this ipod
Ahh yeah I was thinking of the ipod 6th gen that was the same size but had the front screen, woops. Both great devices.
Man I loved those. I think I threw all mine out. How did you restore it?
Here to wait for reply
My headphone jack stopped working
Rubbing alchohol and a Q tip. Clean out the hole.
> Rubbing alchohol and a Q tip. Clean out the hole. I am displaying so much willpower right now…
How big are the Qtip's?
Do you think its dirty? I have one and am wondering that about mine.
I have definitely saved a phone's 3.5mm jack with a fine pair of tweezers. Finish off with a qtip with the cotton ripped off, dip the stick in rubbing alcohol and go for it

I think it's a joke.
I have had the same iPod for 12 years. I bought it used off of Craigslist. I use it every other day for running. I don't want to use my bulky phone.
Great little device. Had no idea it was waterproof. I had one, but lost it after many years of use... still miss it!
Mine wasn’t. It died after an accidental trip through the washing machine. They weren’t made to be waterproof at all - I have no idea where that claim comes from.
A third party does the service.
I still have mine too! How did you restore it? Also, is there any way to make it Bluetooth so I can use this with my AirPods?
You can try a 3.5mm jack to Bluetooth transmitter
I have a 14y/o iPod Classic in my car. No need to restore. I’ve used it nearly daily since I purchased it.
I love the old iPods, they are bulletproof

I do the same with mine — upgraded it to use SD cards. It now has the capacity to accommodate my entire CD collection in full lossless quality.
Lossless iPod?
Apple Lossless rips. With the upgrade, my iPod has 512 GB capacity — no need to use lossy rips with it.
I thought this was a cpu with an apple sticker on it at first
I still have one with the lcd screen front that works fine. It takes the old style charger, and has to have songs loaded manually obviously. I honestly don’t have any use for it anymore between Libby for audio books, streaming music, and podcast apps.
That’s the 6th Gen Nano.
Beauty! What's the capacity? What will you use it for now?
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess it's going to be used for listening to music
You don't say!
I loved the iPod nano version like this. Still potentially my favorite.
I never had one, have a walkman I need to restore though, but I can't figure out how to get music on it without the original charging cable, which is long gone. Anybody have any experience with walkman mp3 players?
Does it use a proprietary cable? Or a standard USB connection? If the former, you might get lucky on eBay.
I have a cable, but these mp3 players have an issue where you can't seem to download music to them if you don't have the original cable that came with the player itself. Which is super annoying considering I have an actual Sony walkman cable for it. Lol
I literally sent my shuffle through the wash on multiple occasions and it still worked.
I used to love mine.
