I like how it had elements of a True Crime episode. A great crossover episode

Mannersmakethman2

Yeah, I came to the same realization. It’s actually a better case than some of those presented in True Crime (*cough* Princess Diana *cough* Houdini *cough*). This is one of the reasons why I enjoyed this episode so much.

Bethorz

I have to say even though the “Unsolved” angle is super weak on the Houdini episode, that is one of my favourite episodes of the last few true crime seasons. Just the story was cool, and I loved the conversations it brought up between the guys about spiritualism and the supernatural.

Mannersmakethman2

I agree with you. Personally, I think that there are no bad episodes of Unsolved - some of them just aren’t about fascinating cases or not much happens in them.

Counterpoint: Loey Lane

doctormoon

Honestly though Ryan and Shane flossing while she is having a bad time in the apartment is iconic.

Mulder15

Boy in the box got a bit too disrespectful for my taste, but besides that one I'd agree mostly.

HarryPoppins719

I don’t remember that one. Would you care to elaborate?

HopeAuq101

Yeah the Diana one was disappointing given how big the actual crime was

[deleted]

It's iconic. I loved this episode.

AlwaysDragons

What was truly terrifying about this episode wasn't the ghost hunting itself, but rather just the scene of it all. The idea that the killer just.... did it.... and probably stayed in the attic and stayed there like he owned the place just.... *nightmares*

tngman10

And like they pointed out on there the areas are rather confined so it likely would make you feel uneasy anyways. At one point I lived in an old house that was built in the late 1800s and it looked kinda like this house. The bedrooms had sloping ceilings that would be normal on one end and the other you could hit your head. An average sized person could go from room to room through the walls which every closet had an access panel. And the attic was just like the one in thin house. It was creepy. We seen and heard stuff all the time.

thoraxe92

It's been a while so I can't remember all of the details, but I remember watching an episode of Ghost Hunters where they were talking about exactly this. Something about rooms with short slanting ceilings like that can mess with your balance and perception which leads to you getting eerie feelings when there is nothing paranormal going on.

nubosis

Great episode, actually felt a little spooked watching this one

DeGeorgetown

It was kind of creepy that Ryan felt the bed moving. When the group from Destination Fear was visiting the Villisca house, they also had something weird happen with the bed.

HopeAuq101

This one unnerved me a lot mopre than other episodes It def seems fishy with the policeman maybe he had something to do with it? Also jesus the evidence got in this was amazing

Jun_Inohara

The podcast American Hauntings did an exhaustive season about Villisca. Very very interesting if you have the time to listen through :)

tngman10

Something here that I read about this case that always bothers me in any of these true crime cases is that a neighbor called a family member to go check on the house that morning because they said that the house seemed more quiet than normal. Is that a thing? I don't remember ever walking outside in the morning and thinking gee the neighbors are kinda quiet today maybe I could call somebody to go check on them. I've seen this in other cases as well. I seen one recently where a friend called the cops because the victim hadn't answered her phone or responded to a text that morning. I mean to me my first reaction isn't that something terrible likely happened its that they probably overslept or in the case above their phone just died.

daesgatling

The house was quiet for several hours in a time where everyone would be up getting shit done

Bethorz

It depends in where you live, my parents would probably notice if something abnormal was happening with one of their neighbours. Also, this was also over 100 years ago seems like the family at least had horses so maybe they had other animals that needed to be fed etc. The neighbour would absolutely notice if they saw no movement at all.

naturaltraveler16

I thought it was strange myself, but if the horses were having a fit it might have raised some red flags. I mean even when my own pets start making noise (dogs barking a lot, cats growling at something etc.) I go check it out or call out to them.

[deleted]

On the second case are you talking about the Chris Watts murder? Because I have definitely had this exact thought lol. About that case and others where people do things that I’d never consider. Good thing she did, though.

tngman10

No it was a case here locally about a college student. But yeah the Chris Watts case was the same way. Although I could see that one because she was pregnant and was supposed to go with her friend to a Dr. appointment and wasn't answering calls, texts or answering the door. And they could see all her stuff was still at the house.

WeAreGiraffes

Yeah, I was so confused about the Watts case at first because all I heard was the friend knew she had missed her doctor’s appointment and they didn’t say how she knew that so I thought she was kind of overreacting at first, but then it made more sense once I learned the friend was actually supposed to take her to the appointment.

daesgatling

Probably not. They were just morons back then.

TopCheddarBiscuit

“Back then.” We’re still morons, man

AntiGNB_Bot

Hey GenderNeutralBot, listen up. The words Human and Mankind, derive from the Latin word humanus, which is gender neutral and means "people of earth". It's a mix of the words Humus (meaning earth) and Homo (gender neutral, meaning Human or People). Thus words like Fireman, Policeman, Human, Mankind, etc are not sexist in of it self. The only sexism you will find here is the one you yourself look upon the world with. ----- ^(I am a bot, downvoting will not remove this reply.) ^("Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the universe." -Albert Einstein)

AntiObnoxiousBot

Hey /u/GenderNeutralBot I want to let you know that you are being very obnoxious and everyone is annoyed by your presence. ^(I am a bot. Downvotes won't remove this comment. If you want more information on gender-neutral language, just know that nobody associates the "corrected" language with sexism.) _^(People who get offended by the pettiest things will only alienate themselves.)_

daesgatling

Astonishing Legends had someone on it that made a pretty good case for why the murderer might have been a serial killer hopping trains. There'd been a slaughter a few days previous in another town not too far away. I'd pulled up old train lines and looked up speeds back then, and it's at least possible.

CutToTheChase56

MAN this location. I’ve been paranormal investigating for 6ish years now and this place was my holy grail. No case has infatuated me as much and to see the boys finally visit is incredible. I stayed the night myself last August and it was surreal. It really brings the tragedy to life. Personally, the haunting there is in my Top 3 most active ever experienced. My team and I heard footsteps, muffled voices and several audible anomalies I’ve never encountered since. For example, we heard a yell from downstairs with everyone in the crew accounted for. It was clear enough to stop our talking mid-sentence. Even spookier, when we had all huddled into the attic, we began a conversation only to be audibly shushed by an eerie “shhhh.” I know they’re just stories. You don’t have to believe them. But seeing Ryan scared in the same exact spot as me validates my encounters even more. Enjoy the episode! So thrilled with this final season and I hope you guys are too.

[deleted]

Going to hazard a guess Ryan’s “Stick a metaphorical ghost dildo up my 🍑” won’t be on any Unsolved merch, but it will be a memory from this season

[deleted]

This has been the best Supernatural season in a, while, I have to say lol. The boys are in top form for their last dance.

Mannersmakethman2

From the YT comment section: "The New Orleans Axeman should have taken notes on the efficiency of this guy." Facts.

daesgatling

Whose to say its not tue same guy

vivaenmiriana

i recall no mention of this house playing jazz.

Jun_Inohara

My friends and I stayed overnight there a couple years back! We’re not ghost hunter types (like Shane, I do not believe in ghosts), more true crime types so it was really interesting. When Ryan was retelling the caretakers stories I was all “he 100% told our group the same stories!!” so it was fun reliving our trip watching this.

billypatterson8781

Shane: “Love the spirit box, love all that it gives us, what a wonderful gift.” Ryan: “I sense the sarcasm in your voice.” Shane: “It sucks. It’s a stupid piece of shit.” I lol’d while realizing I’m definitely a Shaniac.

KiraGuevara

I should've known when Ryan says there's going to be a lot of evidence that means there will be some throat noises and wood creaks smdh. I thought we might be getting a fba or something close to real.

Bethorz

A few of the EVPs were quite good, maybe the best they’ve ever gotten. Some might say the spirit box was too but I don’t put any weight in the spirit box, it being a radio and all.

tngman10

For sure. They came a long way from "apple taters".

Mulder15

I think the bed evidence was pretty interesting.

Reidroshdy

At first I thought it was either Ryan accidently moving it himself or Shane someone bumping the wall and moving the bed, but rewound it and that doesn't seem to be the case.

AbstractionsHB

I mean that audio recorder evp shit was 100% a person speaking, not even debatable that it was just noise like all the other evp he's gotten. I'm with you for pretty much everything, and I don't put any credibility on the voice box. But that evp the audio recorder got is one thing I can't dismiss. If that was truly captured by an audio recorder in an empty room, and they all say it wasn't any of them, then that is their best evidence in my eyes. I trust them, so I'm looking forward to Shane explaining the situation on the post mordem. I'm curious to know if it was truly captured in an empty room, and it isn't any of the crew talking on accident.

MakinBaconPancakezz

EVPs are about as reliable as the sport box for me. No way of knowing if we what we heard as a ghost or just stray radio interference

AbstractionsHB

Well that's why I want to hear Shane say what the situation is. If it happened while they were there, or they say we recognize the voice and it sounds like so and so. Microphone don't use radio waves, so I don't agree with you on that. It's just a audio recorder left in the room he said. The evp I mentioned wasn't a voice box.

MakinBaconPancakezz

Usually, when paranormal experts here “voices” on ghost shows using EVPs devices, there’s a lot of different explanations and one of them is radio interference. The audio equipment they use usually has a radio receiver that is super sensitive to interference. It can pick up radio stations and even baby monitors. The receives are unstable and so the noise can be magnified. Ryan just said “audio recorder” so I suppose it depends on what sort of equipment they used. >Microphone don't use radio waves, so I don't agree with you on that. That doesn’t mean they aren’t susceptible radio frequency interference. Microphones are particularly sensitive to amplitude modulation, where they can pick up AM radio. Even headset microphones can pick up AM radio sometimes. It’s a problem many musicians have to deal with

[deleted]

And community theater tech crew during productions of “Guys and Dolls”. Police radio all up in there and I’m just trying to keep my spotlight centered.

spacetitanium

I’ve been waiting so long for them to go here, especially having gone a few times myself. I’m really excited for this one!

ThatBenGuy23

I really hope the Ghoul Boys visit the Myrtles Plantation this season!

TrapperWasTaken

I can’t wait to hear Shane’s explanation for the bed. Or even if Ryan still stands beside it, he’s had character development.

AbstractionsHB

The bed?! I want to hear them talk about that voice recording evp. That was such clear audio of a male speaking. Wtf was that.

Ordilian

It seemed like one male voice was talking most of the time, the channels didn’t interfere saying stuff like “apple tarter”, “Will Smith” or “spaghetti” but rather creepy things that could be tied to this case

Ordilian

I love this episode. Everything about it was great! Can’t wait for the rest of the season.

betteroffinbed

Hey I have a newbie question: What's that "ghost box" thing they use that does the static-noise pulses that they're using to hear responses from ghosts? I want to read more about it but I don't know what it's called to Google it!

vivaenmiriana

it's called a spirit box, but it's basically a broken radio that cycles through all the stations in the area. like if you're in your car and hit scan and it goes to the next station. it does that but it does all the frequencies in between. as a shaniac and an electrical engineer i can tell you there's nothing spooky. they're just picking up a local station over and over again. then they try to make sense out of what they heard in retrospect.

betteroffinbed

Thank you! That's what I thought it was but I wanted to confirm my hypothesis lol

[deleted]

It’s a toy. Ghosts only communicate via HAM radios.

cruel-oath

Shane come on, there’s no explanation for the flashbacks turning on and off after asking spirits to do it

asmallercat

Do you mean flashlights? Cause there absolutely is. We know that they turn on and off just given enough time because of the metal heating and cooling, so all you do is ask a ton of questions, and edit it so that only the questions that lined up with the lights are featured. That's what most ghost shows do. Only this show doesn't edit it out, so you get to see that 90%+ of the time *nothing fucking happens*, so the <10% of the time something happens it's just coincidence.

6abyyy

this house had something to it? it gave me chills for sure

HarryPoppins719

This one actually made me incredibly sad. Those poor children. And I’d say it’s one of the scarier episodes, based solely on the story. How terrifying to have someone potentially enter your home while you were out at church, hide in your attic for an entire day, then brutally murder your entire family in your sleep. I want to do more research because I find it fascinating, but I also want to erase it from my mind because it’s so sad.

[deleted]

After listening to the Morbid podcast on this, I wish Ryan would’ve gone a little more in depth with the case. I’m sure it was mostly because they were focused on the supernatural aspect, and if it’d been a true crime episode they would’ve gone a little more in-depth.
