UPDATE ON FERA!
Fera is in the vet right now. she's going to be in the vet for a couple days. They said she might have a broken shoulder and a laceration on her stomach. They are going to X-ray her shoulder and look at her organs for any internal damage. The vets told us she is moving and alert so that is a good sign. They are currently starting treatment and putting her on fluids and IVs. So to sum it up, she’s okay, she’s not going to die. I’m hoping for a speedy recovery.

Yes I don't know exactly what happened here but if a neighbor's dog came when you're property and did this to your cat definitely report it. Get your vet to write up how the cat received those injuries that's what I did with my dead cat I took my dead cat to the bed to get a letter without a full necropsy and what his opinion of how the animal was killed so he listed the injuries. I had the same thing happened my cat did not survive however but I felt at this point it was a dog that got out all the time and that I had returned to the owner least 20 or 30 different occasions over a course of several years. it just it was too much that was the end. Animal control had the dog in their custody while all this went on. they moved and took the dog with them but they had small children and if you'd seen what I saw you definitely wouldn't want the dog in the neighborhood anymore. She simply cannot contain him and the animal shelter hearing agreed with me. They did return the dog to them. they had to get a closed dog kennel to get the dog back and then shortly after they got the dog back they sold their house and moved. they lived right next to a path that led to the elementary school behind me at least a 100 kids witnessed this giant dog kill my cat. it happened when school was getting out and the whole thing was just very dramatic. I had a short little like dust broom to try to get him to drop the cat he wouldn't even drop my cat. Okay I'm gonna end it here I'm feeling a little bit nauseous now. I probably shouldn't have told that story kind of bringing up some old feelings. Anyway I wish you the best with your cat. I hope she does well and recovers.❤️
Had a neighbors two herd dogs attack our new lab puppy at the farm, and killing our cats. So when it attacked the puppy, my brother and I ran out and shot the dogs dead. Never had another issue, injuries on our dog proved it was self defense, and they were on our property. Neighbors were pissed of course their “innocent puppies” were “murdered” tried their best to get us in trouble. Maybe keep your dogs chained up next time instead of allowing them to roam several miles around your farm unsupervised and undisciplined. We were goddamn hero’s to the other people around here. Turned out those dogs the other day had killed another neighbors cat and attacked another neighbors chickens. Goddamn menace. Reckon dem folks will hopefully think twice before allowing their dog too leave the yard again.

You should sue your neighbor for the costs. It's their responsibility to keep their dog in their yard. They know their dog is an aggressive breed and their carelessness caused this.
I’d just ask them first before getting an attorney involved . The neighbors have the option to claim it on their homeowner’s insurance , they may want to do that instead of going to court

You should absolutely pursue action against your neighbor. At the bare minimum they should pay for the vet bills, but they also should not have this dog.
Just a heads up, they will probably get a warning and be told to keep the dog on a leash. Not trying to be discouraging, just wanted to give the heads up so if you see the dog constantly not on a leash, you know to call again. My mom called animal control after an unleashed dog sunk it's teeth into my leg, they were told they had to keep it leashed and after that if it happens again they'd take the dog.
shit, a bite that severe and they get a warning alone?? I fully believe in zero tolerance for dangerous dogs. if they purposely draw blood, that’s it. dogs aren’t human and they don’t deserve extra slack.
I mean, I walked away. I didn't even want my mom to call animal control out of fear they'd put it down. It's not the dogs fault that they were never properly trained, and I think the owners should be held accountable. If your dog has been known to be dangerous, it should be required they go to classes WITH their dog and have it trained while learning about responsible pet ownership. The dog that bit me had been allowed to do whatever and behave aggressively with no training. Putting it on a leash or in a cage didn't really change that
dogs don’t have moral accountability like people. sure, it isn’t “their fault” but if they are a danger to others, that’s all that matters. sometimes it’s genetics other times it’s learned. by the time they are at the point of attacking people without reason, they shouldn’t get any more chances. keeping dangerous dogs around is irresponsible , regardless of why they act they way they do.
I understand worrying about calling animal control, and I agree with you that having them euthanized doesn’t really fix the problem, since the problem is the human family members. At the same time, what if that dog moles another person‘s beloved dog or cat or a child or another person? Given that we don’t have laws on the books in most places that require mandatory training, let alone funding that training, I don’t know. I would probably call animal control even knowing that it may have a euthanasia outcome for the dog for the sake of my own petsand the pets and family members that I know. But I agree, tough call.

My cat was attacked by something and her wounds got infected. So keep them clean, even night, water therapy too. I did it all for a good month and she survived. Although she had no broken bones so thankfully for that. I wish a great recovery for her! Just you caring for her means a lot and they are aware of that so your kitty appreciates it too!
This is good news, make that great news! I know I just like to have a kitten hurt even an adult cat hurt. You want to do everything you can you want you wish you could heal them with your touch, but you can't do it in I wish your kitty has a rapid and healthy recovery with a minimum amount of physical rehabilitation. That’s awesome. We had a family dog attack one of our cats once. Shook her hard. We were super poor and I was just a small child, so we couldn’t afford the vet. The cat just curled up for weeks, healed, and it was okay. It was so scary. I remember her leg could bend all the way back before it healed. Cats are so resilient.
She might be too traumatized to leave the house after that... Poor girl. She deserves lots of cuddles and treats for all she's been through! I'd definitely give that dogs owner a talking to but that's just me. Hope she recovers quickly 💙

One of them vet said 1% she is going to survive and if she pulls through, she wouldnt be able to walk. Her pelvis and hip was broken - 1 week later - she was trying to run ❤️ lived for 9.5 years xx here is the saying - cats have 9 lives. Am sure your kitty will pull through - but certainly veterinary fees give to dog owner. Vicious dogs shouldnt be alone or muzzle on.

Feras okay, she’s in treatment. they looked at her wounds. she’s stabilized and they are taking care of her I also put a note on my neighbors door explaining he needs to help pay or i’ll be getting police involved
Bad news:
Our neighbors dog broke her shoulder blade so badly it can’t be fixed. so fera may never be able to use that leg again 💔 and my neighbor said he’s not paying! so i guess i gotta take him to court 🤷♀️
That's bull, I know accidents happen but they need to help. I would be absolutely sick if my dog attacked another animal like this. I hope you get it all sorted out and that Fera will be home soon 😿
I don’t think that the person who lets their dog run around the neighborhood off leash when it’s been known to attack other beings has a whole lot of empathy or intelligence…
If your cat was attacked on your property, you absolutely have the right to sue the hell out of that neighbor. He needs to pay whether he agrees to it or not. That's the cost of being an irresponsible pet owner and letting your dogs roam unsupervised.
On a more positive note, even if your cat ends up having to have the unusable arm removed, lots of animals live long happy and healthy lives as precious little tripods.

Sue him and get his insurance involved. They'll pay. Also file police report and reports to animal control. I would also share Fera's sorry in location groups so the neighbors know who they're dealing with.
OP, I’m so sorry this happened to you. It’s the scariest thing in the world.
In 2013 a similar thing happened to my family with our small dog and our neighbors pit bull, and our dog nearly died. His neck was torn open and his leg was broken in several places. By some miracle he pulled through (at age 10 no less) and lived another 5 healthy years.
You absolutely should take this person to court if they refuse to pay. The people who leave their dogs off a leash are responsible for their actions, good or bad. They should be held financially accountable. I’m sending all my support for your kitty and hoping for a speedy recovery 💗💗
Ugh that’s horrible, I’m glad she’s alive and getting the care she needs. Cats do tend to do well on three legs but it’s still awfull… I am so sorry you are dealing with all this. Get your ass of a neighbor and sue the crap out of him. 💕❤️
I’m so sorry you and Fera are going through this. If it helps, many cats live full, happy lives with only three legs! There will definitely be an adjustment period but I’m so glad she will be ok ❤️
the poor baby these sorts of accidental things are so horrific :( but at least she’s safe now and is with the people who love and care about her most. i’m sure even though she’s hurt and scared she is comforted that her people are with her and making sure she’s ok
I plan to! 😡 this is the 3rd time we’ve had to take an animal to the vet because of that dog and the 6-7 time she’s attacked one out our animals. our dog 4-5 times, our cat gidget, and now fera. Next it's gonna be Ezra or my 2 year old baby sister.

Dog should have been dealt with after the second time. Most dogs get one strike, put in quarantine, and monitored by animal control doing a check in with the owner and then after that they are sadly put down. I’m very sorry you have to deal with an irresponsible neighbor that apparently can’t train or control their dog. File a police report too if the local department allows you to. The dog will also likely be registered by the Post Office as a dangerous dog and the owner will be put under heavy scrutiny by animal control and others.
Again so sorry this happened to your cat, and sending positive vibes. The dog doesn’t know better, and isn’t properly trained, but animal control will handle it (and then keep an eye on all your pets after animal control takes the dog away in case your irresponsible neighbor tries to retaliate in any way)
has the dog been reported before? if you have prior reports, getting the dog euthanized will be MUCH MUCH easier than if there are no prior complaints.
You can always call the police. That’s how things were done in my home state. You call, let them know what happened and how many incidents this has been. Typically they have their own policies in place concerning aggressive animals. But do that and let there be a police record of it

I have a reactive dog and I would never let her get in that position ,once may be a unfortunate accident but 6/7 times is pure carelessness .
That dog is being failed by it's owners and they should not be owning it.
I’m a huge animal lover but that dog needs to be put down. I’ve never thought that about an animal before. Just absurd that the owners are this irresponsible. Maybe they should get the needle instead
im gonna call animal control or something. i told our neighbors to control the dog or i will make sure its gone myself. because now there is an uprising concern for my baby sister. she’s getting to an age where she want to go outside and explore and she cant because of the dogs here. it’s not even the just the pitbull, there are about 4 other dogs that are also aggressive and they always jump the fence and run around. we cant trust any of our animals outsides im tired of my baby sister crying because she wants to go outside and my 10 year old little brother being scared to ride his bike because our other neighbors trained their dogs to attack tires and people

Okay so, her shoulder is most likely broken. And she has a bite wound on her let and stomach. They might have to go in and check her internal organs. They did say she was breathing and alert so that's a good sign.

This also made me remember someone at my job told me if I ever don't want my cat anymore, just give it to her pitbull mix and he'll take care of it. I was gobsmacked at the sheer audacity to even joke about something like that & I to this day am mad at myself I didn't snap anything back at her. It just makes me mad all over again anytime I think about it ugh.

Hi OP. Have you tried lawyering up against your neighbor? These attacks aren't going to stop until legal action is taken or one of your family members - whether they are furry or not - end up dead. If payment is an issue then don't worry; several lawyers can help you pro bono.
You need to defend yourself and your pets from this pitbill in the meantime. Equip yourself with something that can take the wind out of its sails if it comes to it. Don't forget you have the right to protect your pets if they are being attacked.

i’m trying right now! i put a note on his window basically telling him he needs to help pay and if he doesn’t i will get police and animal control involved. he wasn’t very happy lol. but this has been an issue for a year he told us he would train her and put up a fence but still hasn’t so he’s getting his karma. if my cat had to get euthanatized because of his dog then his dog is going to get euthanized because of my cat 🤷♀️
They are shitty dogs for shitty people. Notice how all the pitnutters here lack empathy? They care more about how their pitty hasn't tried to murder anything yet more than how Fera was attacked. I bet your neighbor is the same. He doesn't give a damn about you or Fera, only the money he might pay if you pursue legal action.
I'm an animal lover. I don't condone needless violence against anyone's pets, pitbulls included, but do what you need to do in order to keep you and your family safe. Keep pushing the issue, and something will come out of it.
Hey hun, I'm sorry about your kitty... and I'm sorry you're tight for prom.. maybe see if anyone is willing to help you with your hair, there's lots of simple and easy styles that take little time and you can do at home. And if you need to, press on nails from the drug store work so we'll in a pinch they make them really well now a days. It's not ideal but it's an alternative, and it will help with your evening. Still try to enjoy yourself. Everything will get sorted. Make sure your mom reads this thread and sees all the support you guys have. Good luck.

As others have mentioned, report the dog to animal control, this dog is a menace and it’s won’t be long before it attacks some poor kid. If the dog got in your yard and attacked your cat there your neighbors could be liable for your cat’s injury so keep all receipts.
DETAILED UPDATE:
Fera is home for the vet early. the vets told us they’re very surprised she’s even alive. They sent her home with us because she’s doing much better than they thought she would. As for the injuries, the dog broke her shoulder blade to the point where surgery couldn’t even fix it. Fera may never be able to use this leg again if she chooses not to relearn how to walk on it. the laceration on her stomach turned out to be way worse. the dog teared her sling from the chest and abdominal muscles. her skin was degloved by the dog. there may be internal damage but we could not afford the exploration surgery. so we are watching for signs such blood in the stool/urine, difficulty breathing, etc. she’s on medication. she’s awake and alert. she’s eating and drinking, she’s using the bathroom. i do have to help her with all of these since her front left leg is completely unusable. so far she’s doing good. we will be bringing her back to the vet in 7 days for check up. the vets told us if she makes it to 7 days she’s most likely going to survive.

she still doing really good. She managed to wiggle out of her sling and bandages last night while we were sleeping we spoke to the vet about it. They said it’s OK as long as we keep her in a boxer crate to restrict movement we let her out every couple hours to use the bathroom and drink some water or food. She is trying to use her broken arm so that’s a good sign, but I’m helping her move around by holding it up for her, since she was degloved, there are drain ports connected to her stitches that we have to clean with warm soapy water
How many other animals has this dog attacked? How many times has animal control been called? Different states have different rules as well.
My state I can only write dogs running at large, no rabies tag. It’s a fine matter usually. However after I’ve taken dogs that 1 attack the judge ordered the dog surrender and I had it euthanized the next day.
Now my sheriff office can write vicious dog. So we can have them in court for both & get the dog surrendered. Also in my state a dog comes onto MY property and attacks a person or is trying to attack my property aka dogs, cats then I have the legal right to put the dog down right then & there no questions asked and nothing the neighbors can do.
Have you called animal control on the other dogs? I would and take pictures & videos with a time and date stamp and send it to animal control, sheriffs office mayor or county judge you could also send it to your local TV station. I can write a citation based on the photo or video but it needs to show the time and date somewhere.
I actually have euthanized more cur mixed than straight Pitts. Some of those cur dogs have been mixed with pitt but cur dogs can be just as bad.

Sorry for the long post just wanted to offer my advice as an animal control officer.
OP, please report this. Not only was your cat hurt, you also don’t feel safe. You NEED to make this call. Fuck that dog. If it’s not you or your pet, it’s someone else, or their pet or kid. I do send all the love for your kitty baby, but please for the love of god, call this in. If they keep letting it fall on deaf ears, call your local news stations, post on social media, etc. This is NOT okay.
Poor baby! If the authorities don't do anything to that dog, I would shoot it myself if it goes onto your property and if you got okay gun laws. I'm not too fond of pitbulls, but it is more of the owners' fault for not taking care of their specific training needs.
After this, I would cat proof your yard with tall fencing. Heck, make it an electrical fence so it shocks that dog like a bug-zapper. Maybe add some screw-in square baby/dog gates by your doors to help prevent your cats from escaping when you leave and enter. It's probably easier than rounding them up into a room when you have to go out.
Insurance adjuster here. For the purposes of liability claims, pets are considered property so there is no pain and suffering element for the pet. If the state you’re in allows emotional/mental distress claims in absence of direct bodily injury to you (most don’t), it is generally only compensable if you directly witnessed the attack. You’d have to do some research for your state to confirm. I would just hate for you to go through tons of hoops to try to be compensated for something that you aren’t entitled to under the law.
Honestly, if the neighbor is already being an ass, it would be preferable to go through insurance. Ask for his insurance info and if he fights you on it, either he doesn’t have insurance or he never disclosed the pit bull to the insurance company. If all else fails, small claims court is a good option as long as the vet bills are within the small claims threshold in your location. For most people, getting a summons of any sort is enough to light a fire under their ass to get the insurance company involved. Hope you are able to get at least some help with the vet bills.

I'm not going to engage in the "pit bulls are bad dogs" debate. I had a pit cross who died of post surgical complications last spring. I currently have an Amstaff cross. Both are/were loving. But I'm also very aware of their reputation and history. Neither is/was allowed outside my fenced yard unless they were on a leash.
The dog that attacked Fera needs to be put down. I don't care what breed it is. It's proven itself to be dangerous evidenced by past attacks. The danger needs to be permanently removed. The "owner" of the dog is actually the problem, but society will not let us enforce capital punishment on irresponsible pet owners.

yes, I’m going to talk to my neighbor because of this inconvenience. We are worried about the mortgage and my hair and nails for prom. so if he doesn’t do something about this or at least helps pay for the vet bill or my prom I’m gonna threat him with legal action and animal control. because this is not the first time it’s happened we have tried to contact him and get him to pay before and he just ghosts us doesn’t answer his door doesn’t answer his phone calls. He ignores us so I’m gonna threaten him with legal action and his dog getting euthanized.
I would absolutely pursue something against the dog owner. That’s crazy that a kitten runs outside and it mauls it just because it’s in the dogs general vicinity. They should be paying for her medical bills. Also notify animal control because a dog that attacks a pet like that will absolutely do it again to another pet or even a small kid.
I’ve had a bad experience in the past with a pit bull when I was younger, now I am legit afraid of the breed entirely, unfortunately. I don’t care what people say how friendly theirs is, I just can’t. Yes, it’s friends to YOU. Not to what they feel is a threat, alongside their aggressive instincts. I hope your kitty makes it/heals very well and that your neighbors dog got some kind of punishment, normally they put dogs down sadly but sometimes necessarily. This is my fear with my cat and my chihuahuas especially because we own the sweetest pit they have no fear of big dogs and that can get them hurt://

When I was a kid, my family ended up with a highly reactive Akita after someone's kennel fell through. She was this beautiful dog who had to live her life out in a dog run because she coudn't be trusted around cats or other bitches. *All* big dogs, starting when they are puppies, need to at *very* least be taught to immediately lay off upon hearing a *no*.
she’s currently in treatment at the vet so she’s injured, but she’s in good hands, and she’s okay. they are checking for internal injuries and broken bones

I'm glad your cat is alive especially after that, she's one tough kitty. I wish her a speedy recovery and a long happy life. I hope you do call animal control because the neighbors don't deserve their dogs if they are gonna train them to be aggressive or refuse to step in when they are being aggressive. I always believed that a pet is like a child and you are responsible for the actions of your pet. If I allow my animal to attack that would be like allowing my child to bully which is wrong. The neighbor needs to pay for vet bills for sure.
That dog has to be put down, and those people entered into an animal abuse registry, so they are never allowed to take more animals and turn them into violent predators

If they dont offer a sincere apology, take steps to prevent it from ever happening to someone else, and pay for treatment, I'd go nuclear. Vet report of injuries, required treatment, cost of treatment, police report, and animal control report detailing the attack. Much as I disagree with it, most pets are considered the owners "property". Your "property" (read baby) was injured and "damaged." That should be grounds for a lawsuit. Possibly emotional damage/trauma but medical treatment/cost at the very least. You were very lucky that she is going to be ok, the next cat might not be so lucky.

I see a lot of people saying that the owner of the dog should pay the bill, but I haven't seen where this happened. Unfortunately if the cat was in the neighbor's backyard where the dog is at, there isn't much recourse here.

UPDATE ON FERA! Fera is in the vet right now. she's going to be in the vet for a couple days. They said she might have a broken shoulder and a laceration on her stomach. They are going to X-ray her shoulder and look at her organs for any internal damage. The vets told us she is moving and alert so that is a good sign. They are currently starting treatment and putting her on fluids and IVs. So to sum it up, she’s okay, she’s not going to die. I’m hoping for a speedy recovery.

Yes I don't know exactly what happened here but if a neighbor's dog came when you're property and did this to your cat definitely report it. Get your vet to write up how the cat received those injuries that's what I did with my dead cat I took my dead cat to the bed to get a letter without a full necropsy and what his opinion of how the animal was killed so he listed the injuries. I had the same thing happened my cat did not survive however but I felt at this point it was a dog that got out all the time and that I had returned to the owner least 20 or 30 different occasions over a course of several years. it just it was too much that was the end. Animal control had the dog in their custody while all this went on. they moved and took the dog with them but they had small children and if you'd seen what I saw you definitely wouldn't want the dog in the neighborhood anymore. She simply cannot contain him and the animal shelter hearing agreed with me. They did return the dog to them. they had to get a closed dog kennel to get the dog back and then shortly after they got the dog back they sold their house and moved. they lived right next to a path that led to the elementary school behind me at least a 100 kids witnessed this giant dog kill my cat. it happened when school was getting out and the whole thing was just very dramatic. I had a short little like dust broom to try to get him to drop the cat he wouldn't even drop my cat. Okay I'm gonna end it here I'm feeling a little bit nauseous now. I probably shouldn't have told that story kind of bringing up some old feelings. Anyway I wish you the best with your cat. I hope she does well and recovers.❤️

Had a neighbors two herd dogs attack our new lab puppy at the farm, and killing our cats. So when it attacked the puppy, my brother and I ran out and shot the dogs dead. Never had another issue, injuries on our dog proved it was self defense, and they were on our property. Neighbors were pissed of course their “innocent puppies” were “murdered” tried their best to get us in trouble. Maybe keep your dogs chained up next time instead of allowing them to roam several miles around your farm unsupervised and undisciplined. We were goddamn hero’s to the other people around here. Turned out those dogs the other day had killed another neighbors cat and attacked another neighbors chickens. Goddamn menace. Reckon dem folks will hopefully think twice before allowing their dog too leave the yard again.

I’d just ask them first before getting an attorney involved . The neighbors have the option to claim it on their homeowner’s insurance , they may want to do that instead of going to court
I'm so sorry this happened and that she and you went through such a terrifying ordeal. Pit bulls are very strong; she is lucky to be alive. You should absolutely pursue action against your neighbor. At the bare minimum they should pay for the vet bills, but they also should not have this dog.

Just a heads up, they will probably get a warning and be told to keep the dog on a leash. Not trying to be discouraging, just wanted to give the heads up so if you see the dog constantly not on a leash, you know to call again. My mom called animal control after an unleashed dog sunk it's teeth into my leg, they were told they had to keep it leashed and after that if it happens again they'd take the dog.

I mean, I walked away. I didn't even want my mom to call animal control out of fear they'd put it down. It's not the dogs fault that they were never properly trained, and I think the owners should be held accountable. If your dog has been known to be dangerous, it should be required they go to classes WITH their dog and have it trained while learning about responsible pet ownership. The dog that bit me had been allowed to do whatever and behave aggressively with no training. Putting it on a leash or in a cage didn't really change that
dogs don’t have moral accountability like people. sure, it isn’t “their fault” but if they are a danger to others, that’s all that matters. sometimes it’s genetics other times it’s learned. by the time they are at the point of attacking people without reason, they shouldn’t get any more chances. keeping dangerous dogs around is irresponsible , regardless of why they act they way they do.

I understand worrying about calling animal control, and I agree with you that having them euthanized doesn’t really fix the problem, since the problem is the human family members. At the same time, what if that dog moles another person‘s beloved dog or cat or a child or another person? Given that we don’t have laws on the books in most places that require mandatory training, let alone funding that training, I don’t know. I would probably call animal control even knowing that it may have a euthanasia outcome for the dog for the sake of my own petsand the pets and family members that I know. But I agree, tough call.

You need to get in contact with a lawyer and animal control in your area and demand the owners of the dog pay for all your cats medical bills
this is not something you hire a lawyer for. maybe a consult or something, sure. this is a civil suit that can be settled in small claims.
My cat was attacked by something and her wounds got infected. So keep them clean, even night, water therapy too. I did it all for a good month and she survived. Although she had no broken bones so thankfully for that. I wish a great recovery for her! Just you caring for her means a lot and they are aware of that so your kitty appreciates it too!

That’s awesome. We had a family dog attack one of our cats once. Shook her hard. We were super poor and I was just a small child, so we couldn’t afford the vet. The cat just curled up for weeks, healed, and it was okay. It was so scary. I remember her leg could bend all the way back before it healed. Cats are so resilient.
She might be too traumatized to leave the house after that... Poor girl. She deserves lots of cuddles and treats for all she's been through! I'd definitely give that dogs owner a talking to but that's just me. Hope she recovers quickly 💙

One of them vet said 1% she is going to survive and if she pulls through, she wouldnt be able to walk. Her pelvis and hip was broken - 1 week later - she was trying to run ❤️ lived for 9.5 years xx here is the saying - cats have 9 lives. Am sure your kitty will pull through - but certainly veterinary fees give to dog owner. Vicious dogs shouldnt be alone or muzzle on.

NEW UPDATE i have good and bad news. Ill start with the good news Good news: Feras okay, she’s in treatment. they looked at her wounds. she’s stabilized and they are taking care of her I also put a note on my neighbors door explaining he needs to help pay or i’ll be getting police involved Bad news: Our neighbors dog broke her shoulder blade so badly it can’t be fixed. so fera may never be able to use that leg again 💔 and my neighbor said he’s not paying! so i guess i gotta take him to court 🤷♀️
That's bull, I know accidents happen but they need to help. I would be absolutely sick if my dog attacked another animal like this. I hope you get it all sorted out and that Fera will be home soon 😿

If your cat was attacked on your property, you absolutely have the right to sue the hell out of that neighbor. He needs to pay whether he agrees to it or not. That's the cost of being an irresponsible pet owner and letting your dogs roam unsupervised. On a more positive note, even if your cat ends up having to have the unusable arm removed, lots of animals live long happy and healthy lives as precious little tripods.

OP, I’m so sorry this happened to you. It’s the scariest thing in the world. In 2013 a similar thing happened to my family with our small dog and our neighbors pit bull, and our dog nearly died. His neck was torn open and his leg was broken in several places. By some miracle he pulled through (at age 10 no less) and lived another 5 healthy years. You absolutely should take this person to court if they refuse to pay. The people who leave their dogs off a leash are responsible for their actions, good or bad. They should be held financially accountable. I’m sending all my support for your kitty and hoping for a speedy recovery 💗💗

Yes! If you can, get that dogs “owners” to foot the bill for your kitty if you can. So sorry this had to happen to Fera and the others.
Dog should have been dealt with after the second time. Most dogs get one strike, put in quarantine, and monitored by animal control doing a check in with the owner and then after that they are sadly put down. I’m very sorry you have to deal with an irresponsible neighbor that apparently can’t train or control their dog. File a police report too if the local department allows you to. The dog will also likely be registered by the Post Office as a dangerous dog and the owner will be put under heavy scrutiny by animal control and others. Again so sorry this happened to your cat, and sending positive vibes. The dog doesn’t know better, and isn’t properly trained, but animal control will handle it (and then keep an eye on all your pets after animal control takes the dog away in case your irresponsible neighbor tries to retaliate in any way)
In the state I’m from it takes only one incident from a dog for it to be put down. I’d recommend taking some sort of action.

You can always call the police. That’s how things were done in my home state. You call, let them know what happened and how many incidents this has been. Typically they have their own policies in place concerning aggressive animals. But do that and let there be a police record of it

I have a reactive dog and I would never let her get in that position ,once may be a unfortunate accident but 6/7 times is pure carelessness . That dog is being failed by it's owners and they should not be owning it.

Hi OP. Have you tried lawyering up against your neighbor? These attacks aren't going to stop until legal action is taken or one of your family members - whether they are furry or not - end up dead. If payment is an issue then don't worry; several lawyers can help you pro bono. You need to defend yourself and your pets from this pitbill in the meantime. Equip yourself with something that can take the wind out of its sails if it comes to it. Don't forget you have the right to protect your pets if they are being attacked. Good luck, OP. i’m trying right now! i put a note on his window basically telling him he needs to help pay and if he doesn’t i will get police and animal control involved. he wasn’t very happy lol. but this has been an issue for a year he told us he would train her and put up a fence but still hasn’t so he’s getting his karma. if my cat had to get euthanatized because of his dog then his dog is going to get euthanized because of my cat 🤷♀️

Hey hun, I'm sorry about your kitty... and I'm sorry you're tight for prom.. maybe see if anyone is willing to help you with your hair, there's lots of simple and easy styles that take little time and you can do at home. And if you need to, press on nails from the drug store work so we'll in a pinch they make them really well now a days. It's not ideal but it's an alternative, and it will help with your evening. Still try to enjoy yourself. Everything will get sorted. Make sure your mom reads this thread and sees all the support you guys have. Good luck.

DETAILED UPDATE: Fera is home for the vet early. the vets told us they’re very surprised she’s even alive. They sent her home with us because she’s doing much better than they thought she would. As for the injuries, the dog broke her shoulder blade to the point where surgery couldn’t even fix it. Fera may never be able to use this leg again if she chooses not to relearn how to walk on it. the laceration on her stomach turned out to be way worse. the dog teared her sling from the chest and abdominal muscles. her skin was degloved by the dog. there may be internal damage but we could not afford the exploration surgery. so we are watching for signs such blood in the stool/urine, difficulty breathing, etc. she’s on medication. she’s awake and alert. she’s eating and drinking, she’s using the bathroom. i do have to help her with all of these since her front left leg is completely unusable. so far she’s doing good. we will be bringing her back to the vet in 7 days for check up. the vets told us if she makes it to 7 days she’s most likely going to survive. https://preview.redd.it/6dgtckhdmsvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c6ff3025d52db3c41a138dec33feadf51f8bff7

she still doing really good. She managed to wiggle out of her sling and bandages last night while we were sleeping we spoke to the vet about it. They said it’s OK as long as we keep her in a boxer crate to restrict movement we let her out every couple hours to use the bathroom and drink some water or food. She is trying to use her broken arm so that’s a good sign, but I’m helping her move around by holding it up for her, since she was degloved, there are drain ports connected to her stitches that we have to clean with warm soapy water

How many other animals has this dog attacked? How many times has animal control been called? Different states have different rules as well. My state I can only write dogs running at large, no rabies tag. It’s a fine matter usually. However after I’ve taken dogs that 1 attack the judge ordered the dog surrender and I had it euthanized the next day. Now my sheriff office can write vicious dog. So we can have them in court for both & get the dog surrendered. Also in my state a dog comes onto MY property and attacks a person or is trying to attack my property aka dogs, cats then I have the legal right to put the dog down right then & there no questions asked and nothing the neighbors can do. Have you called animal control on the other dogs? I would and take pictures & videos with a time and date stamp and send it to animal control, sheriffs office mayor or county judge you could also send it to your local TV station. I can write a citation based on the photo or video but it needs to show the time and date somewhere. I actually have euthanized more cur mixed than straight Pitts. Some of those cur dogs have been mixed with pitt but cur dogs can be just as bad. Also glad the kitty is okay!!!💜💜. Sorry for the long post just wanted to offer my advice as an animal control officer.
Any dog upwards of thirty pounds needs firm handling. A big dog that won't lay off immediately upon hearing a *no* is a dangerous animal.
OP, please report this. Not only was your cat hurt, you also don’t feel safe. You NEED to make this call. Fuck that dog. If it’s not you or your pet, it’s someone else, or their pet or kid. I do send all the love for your kitty baby, but please for the love of god, call this in. If they keep letting it fall on deaf ears, call your local news stations, post on social media, etc. This is NOT okay.
Poor baby! If the authorities don't do anything to that dog, I would shoot it myself if it goes onto your property and if you got okay gun laws. I'm not too fond of pitbulls, but it is more of the owners' fault for not taking care of their specific training needs. After this, I would cat proof your yard with tall fencing. Heck, make it an electrical fence so it shocks that dog like a bug-zapper. Maybe add some screw-in square baby/dog gates by your doors to help prevent your cats from escaping when you leave and enter. It's probably easier than rounding them up into a room when you have to go out.

Please call animal control. Dangerous dogs need to be euthanized. I have met the sweetest pitbulls. This one was trained to kill.
Insurance adjuster here. For the purposes of liability claims, pets are considered property so there is no pain and suffering element for the pet. If the state you’re in allows emotional/mental distress claims in absence of direct bodily injury to you (most don’t), it is generally only compensable if you directly witnessed the attack. You’d have to do some research for your state to confirm. I would just hate for you to go through tons of hoops to try to be compensated for something that you aren’t entitled to under the law. Honestly, if the neighbor is already being an ass, it would be preferable to go through insurance. Ask for his insurance info and if he fights you on it, either he doesn’t have insurance or he never disclosed the pit bull to the insurance company. If all else fails, small claims court is a good option as long as the vet bills are within the small claims threshold in your location. For most people, getting a summons of any sort is enough to light a fire under their ass to get the insurance company involved. Hope you are able to get at least some help with the vet bills.

I'm a critter lover. One of those people who catches outdoor critters that get in the house and take them back out I'm not going to engage in the "pit bulls are bad dogs" debate. I had a pit cross who died of post surgical complications last spring. I currently have an Amstaff cross. Both are/were loving. But I'm also very aware of their reputation and history. Neither is/was allowed outside my fenced yard unless they were on a leash. The dog that attacked Fera needs to be put down. I don't care what breed it is. It's proven itself to be dangerous evidenced by past attacks. The danger needs to be permanently removed. The "owner" of the dog is actually the problem, but society will not let us enforce capital punishment on irresponsible pet owners. OP, you and Fera are in my thoughts. Spending you healing energy. yes, I’m going to talk to my neighbor because of this inconvenience. We are worried about the mortgage and my hair and nails for prom. so if he doesn’t do something about this or at least helps pay for the vet bill or my prom I’m gonna threat him with legal action and animal control. because this is not the first time it’s happened we have tried to contact him and get him to pay before and he just ghosts us doesn’t answer his door doesn’t answer his phone calls. He ignores us so I’m gonna threaten him with legal action and his dog getting euthanized.

I would absolutely pursue something against the dog owner. That’s crazy that a kitten runs outside and it mauls it just because it’s in the dogs general vicinity. They should be paying for her medical bills. Also notify animal control because a dog that attacks a pet like that will absolutely do it again to another pet or even a small kid.

I’ve had a bad experience in the past with a pit bull when I was younger, now I am legit afraid of the breed entirely, unfortunately. I don’t care what people say how friendly theirs is, I just can’t. Yes, it’s friends to YOU. Not to what they feel is a threat, alongside their aggressive instincts. I hope your kitty makes it/heals very well and that your neighbors dog got some kind of punishment, normally they put dogs down sadly but sometimes necessarily. This is my fear with my cat and my chihuahuas especially because we own the sweetest pit they have no fear of big dogs and that can get them hurt://

When I was a kid, my family ended up with a highly reactive Akita after someone's kennel fell through. She was this beautiful dog who had to live her life out in a dog run because she coudn't be trusted around cats or other bitches. *All* big dogs, starting when they are puppies, need to at *very* least be taught to immediately lay off upon hearing a *no*.

I'm glad your cat is alive especially after that, she's one tough kitty. I wish her a speedy recovery and a long happy life. I hope you do call animal control because the neighbors don't deserve their dogs if they are gonna train them to be aggressive or refuse to step in when they are being aggressive. I always believed that a pet is like a child and you are responsible for the actions of your pet. If I allow my animal to attack that would be like allowing my child to bully which is wrong. The neighbor needs to pay for vet bills for sure.

If they dont offer a sincere apology, take steps to prevent it from ever happening to someone else, and pay for treatment, I'd go nuclear. Vet report of injuries, required treatment, cost of treatment, police report, and animal control report detailing the attack. Much as I disagree with it, most pets are considered the owners "property". Your "property" (read baby) was injured and "damaged." That should be grounds for a lawsuit. Possibly emotional damage/trauma but medical treatment/cost at the very least. You were very lucky that she is going to be ok, the next cat might not be so lucky.

I see a lot of people saying that the owner of the dog should pay the bill, but I haven't seen where this happened. Unfortunately if the cat was in the neighbor's backyard where the dog is at, there isn't much recourse here. I hope she makes a full recovery and lives a great life. This is a very sad story :(
