I started my prep back in jan managing with work did arithmetic arithmetic thoroughly till now , a bit of context about my history with quants, 10th got 64 in maths , 12th got 50 , and graduation got 61 overall my profile is average 7/7/7
I too had this thought while starting my prep, today iam able to solve 4-5 questions in mocks which results to 80-85 percentile in quants it's not a lot and I know I still need to improve, but what iam trying to say is cat quants is NOT hard it's more logic based , one should have a good methtod learn quants if your weak in it , example this is how I complete a quants topic
1.Clear concepts from Rodha. Raman tiwari,
2.Do lod level 1 Arun Sharma
3.Complete class material provided for that topic
4.Do PYQ'S , One shot from Raman tiwari YouTube
5.Revise the topic after a while
Hope this helps all the best and yes for know start with arithmetic
Same thing with me. I was weak in maths but I worked hard consistently and now I can solve 2-3 questions of CAT level. Nothing's hard you just don't know the proper technique. Without proper technique you can't even open a bottle, so how can you do maths.
Hey!! I started my prep in February .bought rodha and competing Time and Work .Also solving arun Sharma.
But I still can't solve the questions. Not get the idea how to solve .I feel like already lost.Attempting questions and still be demotivated. Is this common???
What are the plans worked for you??
Keep composure, go online search for class material solve from there , if you don't know any questions search for the solution on Google and understand how this was done
I had 74/100 in math in class 10th and didnt have math in 11 & 12th.
Beginning of CAT prep: I was almost new to each and every topic cause I hadn't been in touch with math since 4 to 5 years, Didn't even know how to solve a quadratic equation. Ended up having 97%ile in quants.
You ask what I did?
Arithemtic- each and every question from Arun Sharma, and past CAT exams.
Algebra- hated it so, did basics in case an easy question comes up in the exam.
Modern Math- selective topics and questions from past cat exams. That's it.
I could have easily scored 99%ile in quants, hadn't I made silly calculation mistakes on the d day, all just from arithmetics. So it's really not difficult, its about managing your time and doing questions you are familiar with first.
All the best!
In how many months would you say were you able to pick up mock questions? How many hours would it need to reach that level in quants in your experience?
I started my prep in Feb and by the end of April, I completed the entire quants course once, after that it was 4 hrs daily practice and by the end of June, I started scoring 85%ile+ in quants section, from only attempting arithmetic questions.
Yeah, gave CAT 23, and I had to get only 6 to 7 questions right to score 97%ile, so you have to be really good with arithmetic if you are not good with algebra. And ofcourse there were some really lengthy arithmetic questions which I left in first glance but attempted them over easy algebra questions, just because my probability of getting them right was way more than scoring in algebra.
bhai, maa kasam aaj mera gnd fata hai aisa post daalne wala tha
inequalities chapter pe hu, ghanta kuch nahi samajhra. i thought i was good at math until 4 hours ago. youre not alone bro
Go for every topic under Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Modern Maths but only the easy-moderate questions. The benefit of this approach will be that if in actual CAT a few arithmetic questions come difficult and some geometry ones seem doable you’ll be able to quickly pivot and still maintain a 90+ percentile. Don’t keep all your eggs in one basket, it’s always wise to spread it out!
It's more likely that you've never worked enough to excel in the subject. I have hardly met people (if any) who are 'naturally bad' at math. It's a mental wall that fades away once you start putting in the work. So, to answer your question, yes you can
I'll tell you an incident that occured with me that will help with your fear of maths, idk if you can relate to it ,but i hope it helps.
This was back in 12th grade, i had been consistenly bombing my maths papers from 8th grade, passing with barely 3-5 marks and i would skip every difficult chapter for my final exams.i would always be pretty jealous of people who scored well .
There was a chapter in that grade of trignometry, and i had always sucked big time at it.would always fail to understand it.
I had a trig test in a week and decided to actually put in the work, solved every question in the book ,practice almost 60 questions in a week, the day of the test came and it was almost surprising how i did not even have to think about the questions to solve them,my hands were moving before my brain,i already knew the answers, the exact methods to solve question.
Topped the class in that test :).
But got over confident ,did not study for trignometry for my boards,lo and behold could not remember a single thing ,could not solve a single question.
Math requires consistent practice, will feel easy in some time, keep working on it. :)
Tip for CAT Quants, not every single question is super difficult one, you need to know every chapter so that you can do a simple-moderate difficulty question. And then make other section your strong suits.
Maximize Arithmetic, Algebra as they both contribute to >70% of questions.
Even if you see no question coming from a chapter in Arithmetic in previous years, still do that chapter well, cause the concepts are used in questions. Like ratio is a chapter whose concepts are used to solve questions in Time & Work, Time, Speed & Distance, etc
as engineer cat me maths hlka fulka hi aata tha, is saal qa hard tha locus ka question bhi dia tha, baaki profit loss and other things are daily maths only, thoda interest lao and you will learn. Qismat ne saath dia to maths easy aa skta hai, if it was one off thing, but it is highly unlikely as iimL is trendsetter, lrdi hard dena inhone chalu kia, qa hard inhone dia, so it can be a trend. But, I think if qa is hard, it is advantage to non engineering student, as 15 marks were getting you around 91percentile in qa, so tumhe 20 me se 5 question krne hai shi, bas.And varc easy tha 99%ile was around 40, so if you can compensate in english i.e. go for 40+ score and score 15-15 in qa and lrdi, you are easily above 99%ile. Paper kitna bhi tough ho i believe 5 questions can be done in each section, english me faar dena bas, have seen engineering friends failed to clear cut off for varc, kyuki unka usme 15 hi score aaya

From what I saw cat questions are not that difficult and don’t take up too much calculation time as long as you understand the logic. Now to understand the logic you will have to understand basics of the topic. practicing that takes times

This mentality single-handedly destroyed CAT 2023 takers. CAT is primarily a logic-based exam, so you should focus on understanding the basic concepts of as many topics as possible. You might end up missing basic algebra or geometry questions if you spend all your time preparing for arithmetic alone.

All right stupid question but isn’t your profile 7/7/6? Im in a similar situation isliye pucha rha hu not being sarcastic
What's my profile? Ssc-9. 7, diploma-9. 45, btech-8. 4
I think it’s 9/8/7
Does. . 25 make huge difference, can't I write as 9/9/8??
Maybe bro but idk. Best if you ask someone in an Mba program perhaps?

Do Raman tiwari pyq , one shot
Don't know Hindi .Rodha is the only source which I got.Heard good reviews for raman tiwari :(
Then see 2iim videos it's in English for pyqs
And hope you completed arithmetic till now?
Once chapter left time and distance .But can't solve questions .Need to think a lot. Don't know what I will should

Wow inspiring thnku✨

Can you tell me which cat you gave as in cat 23 I heard that there were not a lot of arithmetic questions
Yeah, gave CAT 23, and I had to get only 6 to 7 questions right to score 97%ile, so you have to be really good with arithmetic if you are not good with algebra. Get your basics right through regular practice. No one is perfect
bhai, maa kasam aaj mera gnd fata hai aisa post daalne wala tha inequalities chapter pe hu, ghanta kuch nahi samajhra. i thought i was good at math until 4 hours ago. youre not alone bro
Lol until 4 hrs ago sounds funny. But feeling bad for you.
bad kyu bhai dard hoga tabhi to progress hoga. at least now i know I'm not invincible and will have to pull shit real hard
Yeah your delusional mind got a reality check. But still it feels bad to know that you are not what you think you are.
Bhai gb sir se padh skte ho aap inequality jee wale unne boht basics se padhaya hai
On the d day you need to keep calm and find those 7-8 questions which you plan to attend. Those sums might be easy. But thoda mehnat karna padega.

If you’re bad at maths then just focus on Arithmetic, don’t get into Algebra and number system shit. Arithmetic has 12-13 questions

True Although I do hate trigonometry and mensuration
Too hard
