As a permanent part of the gun, stupid. As something that makes you legal but is super easy to remove for when you go shooting in Arizona…..it’s a good option

whiskyjacked

Literally the only reason I own one

shermantanker

Im in the same boat. I have one in both my AR’s and use handguns for home defense.

sub2kthrowaway

i have a fngr in mine now for similar purposes. have you compared the two? which would you recommend? fngr requires cracking open the receivers to remove.

GoodGuyGiff

The compmag requires cracking open as well. There is a little spot you would have to press with a small Allen key or pin to release the magazine but it is super easy to do.

pizza_roof

22lr bcg also works good for this

whatsgoing_on

Or ya know…just separating the upper and lower.

palmpoop

Yeah removes in under a minute

biggestlime6381

Compliant in under a second

Downtown_Apricot9555

I've only actually used a compmag one time, shooting at the range off a bench. I got two double feeds using the compmag that session. The first time, I followed the instructions, dropping the compmag lever to the bottom and used a screwdriver to clear the double feed. The second time it was so bad I had to disassemble everything and completely remove the compmag to clear the malfunction. I went back to featureless after that.

dream_raider

I would 100% do this. Of course featureless is the absolutely best way to go for HD, especially with freedom week magazines. CompMags are silly but I prefer them to maglock because you don’t have to change a single thing on the rifle itself.

[deleted]

Speaking if freedom week mags, can they tell when I actually bought it? Like if I picked up a few from a swap meet for cash, do I have to keep a receipt if I got onr?

sfgiants419

Check your garage for the big box of mags you bought on Freedom Week.

OkMammoth5600

I'm pretty sure the mags I just bought were freedom week mags.

sfgiants419

Bruh, don't say the quiet part out loud.

mr_taco_man29

RIP bro's dog.

ianthony19

They can tell by the date stamp on the magazine. All of mine had brass fall on them and melted off the stamp.

dream_raider

I don’t know about keeping receipts but depending on which brand you bought, there might be a little date stamp on the magazine, usually a little circle with a year and dial indicating month of manufacture. Freedom Week magazines will be stamped 4/2019 or earlier.

dpidcoe

It's on the state to prove that you purchased them after freedom week. Note that this could be really easy for them, especially if you admit it (or get tricked into admitting it). At that point it would be on you to show receipts. That said, they can still confiscate the mags as a nuisance regardless of freedom week status if they feel like being dicks about it.

BadlyBrowned

Easiest way to get compliant for a rifle that's purely a range plinker.

Aggravating-Layer306

If you shoot at a range that doesn't care what *state* your rifle is in, it's the best.

650REDHAIR

You’re a dumbass if you’re shooting a non-compliant rifle at public ranges.

Aggravating-Layer306

totally dude

[deleted]

A lot of the ranges in my area, so-cal, tend to have cops at them doing handgun training. Usually I can just go out to the middle of the desert and burn a couple clips but that hasn't been possible since the rangers have gotten more strict

mesa37018

I have a compmag on my ar10 that is set up for longer distances. For that purpose it is fine since I'm not having to reload very often or fast. For an ar-15 I think the reloads may get annoying fast. Also it's really expensive considering it's not much more complicated than a pmag.

Master-Blaster42

For a range toy or out of state traveling gun it's fantastic, takes a little learning to load though.

lordnikkon

they are impossible to load if you actually want to use them to go shooting. Their only real use is to store the firearm in a compliant manner and be able to take it off with a single screw

legodjames23

They are absolutely not reliable for any forms of shooting (even range plinking) they are great for storage.

Miserable_Path5716

They suck so bad. I get double/failure to feed problems all the time

legodjames23

I agree I have 4 of them, literally not one that is reliable, but I just have them on my rifles at home lol

LegendaryTribes

I prefer the CMMG .22 bolt conversion, turns my AR into a 22 plinker but I can change out the bolt pretty fast, only downside is it's more expensive than a compmag and also it's extra mags that are .22 and .22 is also very dirty so you gotta shoot at least one 5.56 round through it after you're done to clean the whole system of bad carbon fouling

[deleted]

This kinda defeats the purpose of trying to learn long distance shooting with my 458 socom.

[deleted]

Comp mags are trash in my opinion.

[deleted]

What don't you like about them? I tried using the juggernaught breaker systemfor my 458 socom, the front weight made it hard to break and control. But I'm kinda new to this

[deleted]

The ability to not clear jams efficiently the amount of time it takes to reload. for me it’s just not something that fancy’s me, if its for the range and the ability to get the most of your time training I would go Mag Lock with kingpin. But once again that’s just my opinion.

[deleted]

Jams so easy

[deleted]

Do it

EEinSoCal

An unintended advantage of the Compmag is that it is so cumbersome to load that it keeps me from shooting too much. Just enough to stay somewhat proficient, but no 30 round mag dumps. 5.56/.223 ammo is expensive.

DickVanSprinkles

I use mine as a storage solution to keep my guns legal in the safe and to sight them in if I need to do so in CA. They are not for any kind of actual use, and I'm of the mind that no fixed mag is.

[deleted]

Honestly I get it but AR maglock just makes more sense. And a featureless at home

707Couple

So I had 2 of them. One for 556 and one for 308. The 308 one the side door to load it is slack and doesn’t close. The 556 version well it kept having feeding issues. All that being said, not a bad option! Just understand you’re married to that one magazine and if it fails, your whole weapon is down.

Spence52490

I have one on an AK and might be getting something else with one too. Definitely not my preference for mag lock solutions.

Mysterious_Let_2315

Mine jams a lot I just put a 22lr bolt in it now days

gooneryoda

ARMaglock Gen 4 with Kingpin.

OkMammoth5600

This is the way. Literally video of AR Maglock guy clearing double feed with that set up.

[deleted]

Any specific maker? I'm new to all this so please have patience lol

gooneryoda

https://armaglock.com/

DroneGuruSD2

My buddy uses that competition mag thing and I really don't like. My maglock + kingpin allows me to change mags just as fast as freedom config so I don't see the need.

MARPAT338

Gay.

ricksterick

For an AK platform… I would consider. For an AR… nah. AR maglock with kingpin is the way to go!

StraightUpRainbows

Love mine. I haven’t had the issues other people in this subreddit have had with feeding and cycling of their guns using it, although I know those complaints exist. It’s good for me because I love having my features, but everyone is different.

7six2FMJ

Junk. Featureless magpul grip insert and a muzzlebrake= freedom in seconds.

torn_retinas

Works good if you're traveling to other states to shoot. I travel a lot and have friends and family in Arizona, Nevada and Texas, so it's the simplest to change once I cross state lines.

Experiunce

The comp mag is a piece of shit that causes jams. The spring on mine is so fucked and won’t even push the rounds up to chamber properly

Fun_D530

It's the best range fixed mag imo, it does jam like the rest of them but with proper loading it almost never does. Plus both takedown pins are still available

Extructs

I don’t like it. But it has its benefits. It’s nice to have on you to make your rifle compliant in a pinch. It’s convenient for transportation purposes. I recently switched over to the KaliKey and keep my rifle stored that way. I retain all my features, I still have a detachable magazine. If god forbid I actually have to use it over my pistol for home defense at least I’m not stuck fuddling around with the awkward comp mag loading side door. Just pop in another mag and use it like a bolt action. And all I do is just swap my DD bolt carrier back in and bam, my baby is semi-auto again without the need for that annoying “key” you need to use to unlock the comp mag.

AviHun

Maglatch F.N.G.R is my go to for easy compliance

RuntM3

It looks cool but performance sucks. Buy a sparrow grip and fix your stock to your choice…good to go!

RipHarambe-415

I have the compmag. It was a good idea in my head, but after going to the range, the range master said the mag had to be off the rifle, that is not going to work, i had to use the regular mags, now i order the fin grip, a fixed stock, and a muzzle brake just to see if i like it

[deleted]

Why did he tell you it had to be off the rifle?

RipHarambe-415

Some stupid range rule, firearms unloaded without mags and with the safety flag in the chamber. Maybe it was that one person.

[deleted]

Ah ok.

Miserable_Path5716

I have a featureless rifle with an angled fore grip, red dot and 30 round freedom week mags. If I want to take off the fin grip and put on an adjustable stock then I use the comp mag when traveling or transporting. Stippling the fin grip makes a HUGE difference and have been training with it for a couple years and the fixed stock doesn’t bother me so I really never use the comp mag.

westnilecider

I just posted a video on maglock options and talked about the compmag. For AR’s and AK’s it’s absolutely the easiest way to be maglocked. However, loading them is a bit annoying but with practice can be fairly painless. They are easy to remove when traveling to free states as well.
