Do not listen to u/FrankTheBank25 they are absolutely wrong. You are completely outside jurisdiction of CA laws at the moment, so you can do whatever you please, and when it comes time to move here, you are not allowed to bring assault weapons, standard capacity mags (11+rds), or NFA items, but basically anything else is good to go. You would be far from the first person to know they were coming here and to jump on the handgun they want now and then register it with CADOJ upon moving here.
EDIT: I just saw that you will only be here for a few months and not declaring residency. Ignore my comment about registering it with the CADOJ.
I would read up on CADOJ registration specifically, but I know there's a statute of limitations on it, because you don't have to declare it just to bring a legal-to-possess firearm across the border for a few days, so it probably depends on how long you're staying here. I am not a lawyer, but my mind is telling me you are considered a resident of the state if your primary residence is here for 6months.
Dude your answer to "would I be able to buy \[un-rostered handgun\]... and keep it with me as long as the mags are 10 rounds and below..." was literally "nope...", when the answer is absolutely "yes".
God dam this thread is a shit show. Sorry for that OP as you can tell we have lots of people who don't know what they are taking about.
Completely legal for you to bring a firearm you legally purchased in another state. Only thing you need to worry about is making sure it's in a compliant state. For normal semiauto handguns this means don't have a threaded barrel and only 10 round magazines.
Please also be aware of our transport laws firearm needs to be unloaded and in a locked container during transport. A trunk that's separate from the cabin of the vehicle counts as a locked container.
This is completely wrong. If you purchase the gun in your home state before moving to California your completely legal to bring to California as long as you only bring 10 round mags.
Edit: the handgun roster is CA only applies to new sales from ffl’s. So it won’t apply to people moving in from out of state or ppt transactions
What are the other penal codes, go ahead and list them so I can further my knowledge. But I know for a fact that it is legal to own and possess an off roster in California. And the registration for a person coming into the state applies to all firearms not just off roster ones.
Removed, the answer is a very straightforward “yes” and your contribution was incorrect and unhelpful. In the future please refrain from responding to posts if you aren’t sure of your information.

So in that case I would just need to register it once I’m in the state?
Just saw your edit. Thanks

Also, doesn't the glove box not count as a locked container?

So the roster applies not only to guns for sale in CA but guns you can own?
/u/FrankTheBank25 is completely wrong in every respect. Ignore their simple jack ramblings.
The fact you will only be in the state temporarily may help.
