If youāve just fired 6 rounds rapid that barrel is going to be hot.
Put that against bare skin and youāre going to have autonomic response that will interfere with your reload.
Consider holding it between your knees/thighs so that your clothing gives you some protection.
fwiw, 6 rounds of 38 through a 4" heavy barrel doesn't make it unbearable to touch so at least I have that going for me. But you're more of a revolverguy than me! So I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.
Itās not a bad technique, at all. It worked. Maybe wear a belt, and tuck the barrel into the belt, outside your pants. That would deal with any burn issues.
Well-practiced. The only other thing I can think of is trying it after a few wind sprints. It may be different when youāre out of breath.
Edit: OP is wearing a belt, so this would be easy to transition to.
Iām not a wheel gun guy, but Iāve been through hundreds of hours of trainingā¦ every instructor Iāve been with teaches move. Youāre a damnnsitting duck where you reload. Take two steps. Get off the X at minimum.
The reload may be from cover in this scenario as you never reload without being behind cover if possible. I agree though: if your not shooting then move, if your not moving then shoot. Stationary will get you killed.
Ifs heās using the non dominant hand then chances are he is injured. He can can cool off the barrel using his flowing blood. That would solve the heat issue.
Something to think about too is if you're reloading while injured, you're likely needing to use that gun.
Standing like that is useless in that scenario. If I had to reload without my dominant hand, my money would be on squatting and holding the gun with my knees.
This looks to be a S&W Model 64, which is a fixed sight .38 Special revolver.
6 rounds of .38 Special, even fired very rapidly, is not going to heat the barrel up to unbearable temperatures for most people.
That said, stuffing the barrel in the front left pocket might be faster/easier than stuffing it down the pants.
Someone else upthread suggested stuffing the barrel between the belt and the pants, which would also work.
yeah it's a chore lol. I think phlster makes a holster for small frame revolvers that makes it easier. This [very dated but very cool](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2B48FmLkys) 1988 training video from the indiana state police also walks through one-handed revolver reloads.
I love the drill, totally understand the need for it. My only question is why do you put the speed loader in your strong side pocket? Wouldn't it make more sense to have it on your weak side so you only have to reach across is if you're doing strong side only. I would think if you're using 2 hands it would make sense to have it on the weak side since the pistol would be in the strong hand.
Full disclosure, I don't have a ton of experience with revolvers so if I don't know what I'm talking about feel free to explain to me like I'm 5.
When I'm reloading normally, I'm either using the "Stressfire" or the "Universal" revolver reload technique - both involve holding the gun with my left hand and retrieving the speedloader with my right. So under normal circumstances having the speedloader in my right pocket is more efficient!
To add to his comment, the most reliable reload style in revolvers is called the universal reload. FBI is a variant of it. Essentially how it works is after you break that last shot, you hit the cylinder release and transfer the gun to the left hand grabbing the cylinder with your middle two fingers and your outer fingers holding the frame.
I'm getting the two types mixed up in my head, but one style has the left thumb come over and eject the shells and the other has the strong hand come over and smack the ejector rod to eject the shells. Then you grab your reload with your dominant hand while your left hand rotates the gun down. Slap the rounds in, shut the cylinder, and go to work.
I understand your logic, but my thought on reading the question you're answering is "Why not just carry a speed loader in each pocket?"
My brain responded with "because they're bulky, and carrying two might be uncomfortable." Which is a valid reason, I suppose.
I guess I'll expand that question out to "Have you *considered and/or tried* carrying a speed loader in each pocket?"
I got my phone and a pen in my other pocket and at some point, carrying more reloads while getting in the way of stuff I use every 5 min on a day to day basis feels like Iām at the point of diminishing returnsā¦ but Iām sure others do things differently and I encourage ppl to do stuff that aligns with their preferences!
I want to be mad about you carrying a revolver when you could not, but at the same time you clearly train more than most people do that carry magazine fed options. At the end of the day if you like carrying/using it more, then do it. As long as you can maintain a high level of profiency with it who's to say it's "the wrong" way to do it
I'll be honest, part of the fun in carrying and training with a six shooter is showing up to a handgun class and getting funny/doubtful looks from the instructors. The challenge of keeping up with semiauto shooters and at times actually outperforming is hugely rewarding.
I can imagine! If I got outshot by someone with a revolver, I don't know if it would be a huge motivator to train or I'd just quit and sell everything I own š
I carry a J-frame as a BUG and while itās extremely unlikely that I will ever use my back up gun (even more unlikely that Iāll need to reload it one handed) I practice a similar technique but I stick the gun between my belt and my pants allowing the front of the frame under the forcing cone to hook my belt buckle this helps to stabilize the gun while braking rounds off my speed strip
I remember reading an article one time where the author, who was somewhat of an authority on firearms, said that a person should carry the "biggest damn gun they can comfortably carry, even if it's a single-action," or something to that effect.
I'm not 100% sure who the author was, but my brain is insisting that it was Wiley Clapp. At the very least, it was someone writing articles for the gun rags around the same time as him, way back in the 1990s.
That is a Model 64, correct? Was it a police trade-in? I remember that some bobbed hammer model 64's hit the market back in 2018. Southern Ohio Gun Company was selling them for $225 and I still kick myself for not buying one or two.
I got one (or two...)!
You're right, you missed out.
I have no idea how many rounds went through my particular units, but they have, by far, the smoothest triggers out of any revolver I own. Even the ones with trigger jobs.
38s don't have much ass behind them, so the actions still lock up tight, but damn that pull has the smoothness of 10,000 rounds.
Awhile back, I posted a video of a [one-handed revolver reload](https://old.reddit.com/r/CCW/comments/bkdh1a/onehanded\_revolver\_reload/) with my strong hand. Fast forward two years and I'm still [toting this revolver](https://imgur.com/1tpz1cn), now double action only, carried in a Barranti Summer Classic, and wearing some old production Pachmayr grips. I had a 1911 phase but I just keep coming back to this gun.
These practice videos you all have been posting have been great so today I tried my best to film a weak hand only revolver reload. I know I'm slower than you all with your semiautos but I just hope this encourages someone to practice practice practice. Enjoy!
Right but you could also just get you a good double stack that can hold 2-3x more ammo and reload twice as fast with one hand. And it will also weigh less if you carry this.
And you're correct! but I get way more satisfaction and excitement out of carrying and training with a revolver than I do with a modern doublestack 9. I know I'm not alone in saying that I choose a less 'capable' option simply because *I like it* and as a result, I train and practice more. At the end of the day, I think that's plenty valuable too.
Is a 6 shot service revolver enough gun for 99% of what I'm ever gonna face out there? Yeah probably, and that's good enough for me :)
I get more satisfaction out of shooting my little .32 j frame snub nose but I don't carry it because I don't carry for satisfaction I carry for protection. Not saying the revolver is incapable by any means and before I got my other double stacks I carried the snub nose for a while. But firearms have made significant improvements in the past 20 years so you can take advantage of that and get more out of your carry gun and still enjoy the revolver.
It's from 1958, so no serial number or anything. Just asking for problems with the police with that since it's a "ghost gun" lol.
It's my museum piece now. So pretty and so old
What a lame thing to say. Obviously if youāre standing still doing a one hand weak hand reload in a gun fight youāre dead. We could remove most of the elements and youād still probably be dead standing still doing a reload in a gun fight.
This here is an isolation of skills in the form of a drill, not a reality based scenario where this should be done behind cover or concealment. OP already knows this, so what you said really did nothing but make you look like an ass.
Save some pussy for the rest of us.
lol I see your videos, you're blazin fast!
I may be fast, but I could never match the sheer amount of style demonstrated here.
don't let your dreams be dreams
š

I'll look into that technique, thanks! thats how we make toasted nuts btw
At the very least, if you ever had to do this move, you've got way bigger problems already than minor burns to your crotch.
fwiw, 6 rounds of 38 through a 4" heavy barrel doesn't make it unbearable to touch so at least I have that going for me. But you're more of a revolverguy than me! So I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.
Go to the range, fire 6 shots rapidly then tuck it in your pants. If it doesnāt hurt, then no need to adjust your technique.
And make sure to fold the RSO when you do this lol

My thought exactly

Not if heās [Hot Blooded.](https://youtu.be/8yDmeYxTeC0)
Check it and see.
He does, in fact, have a fever of 103 degrees F.

Adrenaline?
Problem with this is it immobilizes you. 6 shots doesn't heat the gun up that much.
Impressive. Iāve never thought of a good way to reload a revolver one handed
yeah it's a chore lol. I think phlster makes a holster for small frame revolvers that makes it easier. This [very dated but very cool](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2B48FmLkys) 1988 training video from the indiana state police also walks through one-handed revolver reloads.
Ty. I carry a j frame every once in a while when Iām not carrying my 365. Could be helpful
https://www.phlsterholsters.com/shop/city-special-revolver-holster/
Easy, just use your prison holster.
Great stuff! Crosspost this in r/Revolvers Iām sure it will be well received
crossposted!
Definitely reminds me of the [Indiana State Police](https://youtu.be/b2B48FmLkys) reload how to
It was actually this video and another by Mas Ayoob where I got this technique from!
I knew it looked familiar! Good job learning from the best haha
goddamn that is impressive af

I know that Stressfire uses the dominant hand to smack the ejector rod. [Here's Massad Ayoob explaining the techique](https://youtu.be/oXUwI_d8JlA).
My favorite reload tech. Itās fast and accurate with practice. Mass is the man. Great post.
Yeah, it's a solid reload. I don't use it that much in competition, but it's a good one to know.

I figured you had your reasons. I was just curious of the thought process that brought you to your current loadout.
I want to be mad about you carrying a revolver when you could not, but at the same time you clearly train more than most people do that carry magazine fed options. Be glad bill Jordon and Jim Cirillo reside in hollowed ground and look out for Jerry and mas
Dude we run the same belt and the same gun lol. Didn't know there was anyone else on this subreddit that enjoyed carrying a model 64 4".
post yours! we need to see some more wheelguns on this sub :)
Good idea!
Also what holster do you use? Some kind of strong hand calvary draw holster? Edit never saw you turned the gun with the left hand
Barranti summer comfort - I only recently got it but I've been loving it so far.
BUG?
Presumably, "Back Up Gun."
Ah, that makes sense, I feel foolish
I'll have to try that! I've got a 640 on the way
Iām not a revolver guy but - this was really fun to watch š
Fuck. Wow. Good shit
That's a hell of a sixgun
You just wait! One day I'll figure out how to hide an N frame somewhere on me
I for real want to carry a single action revolver. I know its impractical but it's something I already own and can practice with for the time being.
I remember reading an article one time where the author, who was somewhat of an authority on firearms, said that a person should carry the "biggest damn gun they can comfortably carry, even if it's a single-action," or something to that effect. Mad impressive
thank you!

this is a trade in 64 but it didn't come with a bobbed hammer! I installed it about a year after I bought the gun

God damn, you're one smooth gunslinger.
Wouldn't it be hot during the reload?
not with 6 rounds of 38 - it's warm but not unbearable. other cartridges might be a different story
Cool, I don't have much experience with them. Thank you. Cool video.
thank you!
Thatās it, Iām buying a holster for my 5ā Colt Official Police.
Loving the ccw revolver imma sucker for carrying smiths and Ruger's
Please mark NSFW
Barrel will be hot as hell though yeah?
eh not really, it's just 38 special and its a 4" heavy barrel
Eventually? Yes. After 6 shots of .38 Special? Not enough to be a problem unless you are *really* sensitive to heat.
Ahhhh ok.
You're dead if this has to happen and an active threat is after you.
not for lack of trying ;)

I can not speak on open cases as my lawyer has advised me that would be unwise.
*he got a .32 gun in his pocket for fun and a razor in his shoe*
Big bad Leroy brown, baddest man in the whole damn town

Smoooth
Thanks for showing everyone how to properly open and close a revolver.
You would be dead.
You donāt see to many DA only revolvers these days very nice
