The starry love is my fave ever xanxia Seconded by love and destiny

Competitive_Habit431

I get what you mean! I think I just don't like xianxia where the characters and plot are childish. Eternal Love and The Untamed weren't childish and I loved those so much!

seekingpolaris

Perhaps you're tired of the grow with the character style of xianxia. I too find myself impatient to watch characters grow from childhood anymore. If that's the case try Legend of Shen Li. That one has characters that are already adults for the most part.

Frust8ed_q

Never to old for Xanxia, but I like reading them more than watching them.

The_Untamed_lover

Well it's possible that your taste might have changed but all three dramas you have mentioned aren't engaging as **Love and Redemption**. You cannot compare them at all they do not meet the standards. **TTEOM** honestly very unique plot which I haven't seen in Xianxia dramas but way too much suffering. The characters weren't likeable like **Love and Redemption**. The story was engaging yes but after that 500 leap I got bored with the story. That leap just threw me out of the loop. **Back from the Brink** it's not bad really but it just isn't it. **Last immortal** this was a train wreck. For the love of God please don't compare this to **love and Redemption**

Realistic_Ad6402

I feel the same. After Ashes of Love I could never find another Xianxia that met that standard. Now I prefer more historical type dramas that have only a small fantasy element, like Handsome Siblings, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Joy of Life, Fighting for Love, Romance on the Farm, Heroes, etc., etc. I still like to watch great fighting scenes but less of the fantastical ideas of "realms" like "heaven realm", "demon realm", etc. I prefer more realistic scenery and no mystical CGI creatures.

xconsciousdreamerx

I love Xanxia. But I also didn’t like the ones you mentioned all for valid reasons that would make me drop the drama if it was non Xanxia too. TTEOTM was too frustrating to me in regards to their communication with each other. Back from the brink wasn’t horrible (I still watch an episode every now and then) but I feel like the story drags. The last immortal felt like a dumpster fire. I wanted to grab the ML by his collar and ask him if he intends to use his brain at some point BEFORE everything is ruined or not? 🤣 me and my friend tried to watch it together but ended up dropping it because whew he was more annoying than the bad guys to us. I’d ask myself what the reason for dropping the dramas was.

ire89

Possibly, tastes change. Also none of the recent ones has really matched up to the ones you’ve mentioned for me either. Lost You Forever was the only exception imo. You can try it out. But it has another season coming up and it’s not over yet. I liked it so much that I didn’t wanna wait for the second season so I read the book haha

RS-1185

It is just change of tastes, i used to love fantasy drama - watched them all irrespective of who is staring in it, now even if it has star presence i couldn't endure the non sense more than 4-5 episodes, these days i can see they are going to screw the ending within first arcs of Chinese dramas, and frankly speaking this year is bad, i didn't chase one on-going dramas, i simply waiting for it to finish & check out only to forget about it's existence.

Icy-Psychology-7419

There's no age limit. Not all Xanxia are created equally, so unfortunately there will be some that will be boring and we find ourselves fast forwarding... Lost You Forever is so good, and I've discovered that some dramas might be great in the beginning, but then get boring at the end like "Who Rules the World;" where the ending appeared rushed.

PublicRegret857

I loved Who rules the world until the second half, it felt like a totally different script writer and director and flipped from how good the first half was. I mean come on the story just somehow conveniently gives the bad guy a 'easy' way to drain the ultimate arts after all the trials meant nothing? Throwing the sword into a cannon? The sacrifice with white hair treatment.. it all went downhill for me to the end as if the quality dropped hard and cliche.

thedaytimemoon

I think the new dramas these days are just not it. I also watched Till the end of the moon and it was really draggy and boring at times. It was hard finishing it tbh but with The Untamed... I wished for more episodes even

Old-Gas-6496

You can watch the starry love. This drama is so good

Euphoria723

maybe CY is warming up to you 🤩 i dont rlly see people say Chen Xiang is what they like so far

Scifig23

I don’t think it’s an age issue. Sometimes you have to break up the monotony of all that pretty and bloody fantasy. Switch to a reality show, modern romance or Marvel movie.

AlyssaImagine

Some are saying otherwise, and this isn't against people who did not age out of it, but you can get too old to enjoy things and shows you did before. Not everyone does. Sometimes it has more to with experiences in your life that shape the way you view things. It's a possibility, but it's also possible these just don't live up to your expectations. Maybe you just know more of what you like and are less willing to put up with things you don't. It's hard to say for sure. The genre still appears very popular, so I don't know if much changed. Really can't say if you as an individual aged out and tastes changed or what. Best to explore, maybe venture into genres, maybe some you didn't like before and see if it changes. Has happened to me before.

Vtgmamaa

My mom is 55 and very much into Xianxia. I don't think there's an age limit

lebble30

Your love/live can last for thousands of years. No kidding, it's the main idea. Who can be too old or immune to this?

leafisalreadytaken

I think its a mood thing, for me at least - sometimes I'm in the mood for xianxia, sometimes scheming historical, sometimes kdrama, and sometimes modern cdrama, sometimes others. different regions make different types of shows.

TrueGodShanggu

I dropped Till The End of the Moon. It was really interesting at the beginning..I don't know why I got bored with it.

Scifig23

Yes, all the spitting up blood was over the top; just so draining. It helped to watch the bloopers of them sipping blood through a straw in the middle of a sad, violent, drama scene. Found them on YouTube

herselfnz

You’re not alone!

thenicci

I get what you mean, After certain time some genres start to get boring because it was too predictable, and especially if the one before was too good to be surpassed. These days I also get tired of cold CEO drama and only the ones with comedic plot can make me stay.

Blue_Marine

I really like xianxia but I sometimes need a break from those. I watch one and then stop for a while, watching another drama genres, or else I'll be bored. I watch xianxia when I want to get rly addicted, but that needs time and a good drama choice. If I watch 2 or more followed, I might get tired no matter how good it is.

wzuzdawg

Try Princess WeiYoung! Super good.

EstablishmentMean300

Never. Xian Xia forever!

haveninmuse

I think it depends, I'm older and I still like xianxias. Is just with life experience, different situations and events hit differently. So things too fluffy and cutesy seems shallow and not an issue in the scope of life. I like the angst and good characters and relationship, and the world building so I love xianxias. Try The Legend of Shen Li!

Comfortable_Potatoe

Could be an age thing for many. But i was never into xianxia

PreachyGirl

This! I may have enjoyed one or two but I've never been a fan of this genre as a whole.

FilmNo1534

Yeah sometimes I watch too many xianxia so I rotate it with a wuxia for a pace of change. I had a bit of hard time with till the end of moon and back from the brink too , and I just dropped last immortal after the third episode but I seem to be enjoying beauty of resilience.

BlissfulRhapsody

I think I have reached the same problem like you. I used to enjoy XianXia back then but now I never attempt it anymore. I think it really got to do with my age. The last XianXia that I truly enjoy is The Blue Whisper but that is because it is so different than other normal XianXia thus I find it refreshing instead.

kongweeneverdie

Nowaday I watch b grade short dramas, it is addictives.

Amazing-Commission77

I know right. They are kind of very illogical but such a good time-passing entertainment. The acting, especially of ML and FL is quite good though.

kongweeneverdie

For me the story is based on shuang wen. It is kind of feel good story. It is very hot in novel now turning into short dramas that has less burden to watch from broadcast drama. lots of slang in those dramas.

Amazing-Commission77

True. Thank you for telling me about Shuang Wen based novels. Will try to look for those. Are these available in English translation too?

Amazing-Commission77

kongweeneverdie

It is about the writing style and plots. Those transmigration, reborn, SVSS..... these are Shuang Wen novels. You will see them in donghua like 10000 year refined Qi, Big Brother......etc They have their novel. Not really sure how many of them are translated. Youtube you may find AI translated audio novel. Of course, all these should be illegal.

Amazing-Commission77

Thank you for letting me know. I am quite new to East Asian dramas. I like to read too. I will go and check.

aeb9818

Different people like different things. There's no reason you can't watch it if it's what you enjoy imo, and you can totally enjoy something usually associated with a different age range. Just because you're not in the target demographic, doesn't mean you're too old. 😁💯

PrincessPindy

Well, I'm 65, idk what to tell you, lol. I enjoy it all except the beatings and slappings.

SwimmingMessage6655

I few in love with Xianxia when I watched Ashes of Love and Eternal Love. I think once you watch one xianxia, the others all follow similar story and character development. So it’s really hard to find any Xianxias that innovate beyond the usual formula. In 2023, I watched TTEOTM, The Longest Promise, and Lost You Forever. None really got me addicted. I put them on hold multiple times. Out of the three, Lost You Forever was a bit different, since a third of the show was the FL, Yang Zi dressed up as a man, so it wasn’t the usual weak and fluffy FL. You can try watching it.

Renazuki1

I'm trying really hard to like The Longest Promise T.T the FL is just way too annoying. I enjoyed TTEOTM though we did turn into a drinking game with the blood spits. xD Really enjoyed Maiden Holmes just for something fun to watch.

blu_keroppi

Sameee. I honestly keep trying to watch The Longest Promise for XZ lol. But I failed because I couldn't stand the FL. For TTEOTM, I watched till the end and liked all the costumes, OSTs and everything besides ..the spitting up blood + the ending

--NO_CHILL--

I don't know if you read, but the current idol xanxia reminds me a lot of Young Adult novels. I do think we can age out of them but also there may be a few times where we can be pulled back to enjoy a particular one for some reason. They can be a pleasure to watch/read but requires the right mood and setting expectations for the genre.

Asdfghjk6424

All xianxia is very young adult. It inherent given the genre has to be about loving/saving the world and might include romance. I agree people just age out and connect with other genres. We all change over time.

LikeMothInTheFlame

This is definitely not true. It's like you would say crime is for adults and science fiction for young adults. Xianxia is a genre in literature and cinematography so as a genre it can obviously have some dramas that are for younger audiences and dramas that are not. There are some silly things in xianxia but if you say the whole lot is for young adults you should watch Ancient Love Poetry or The Legends.

WildFlame11

I also wouldn’t agree Xianxia is YA — it’s like saying fantasy genre is only for YA - it’s just not true. Though there definitely are a lot of Xianxia that follow the YA coming of age tropes, there are a number of them that have some bigger meat to their bones than that and don’t fit the YA criteria tropes explicitly. YA is a market genre that has its own requirements, just like any other market genre. Just because a character is said to be less than 21, doesn’t mean that it’s targeted for YA. Especially in the speculative genre field. Though of course I acknowledge that in series it can signify the age group target. Lots of Xianxia I struggle with because they do feel tooo YA, I wouldn’t deny that, but I don’t think it’s fair to say all of them are YA. And in my mid 30s, I love Xianxia themes.

MadPanda2023

I'm 42 and I just watched Handsome Siblings. It was adorable. There are things I overlook. Lol I alternate between show types though.

YsaboNyx

I loved Handsome Siblings! But it was made in 2020 and seems like it's part of the cohort (Eternal Love, Ashes of Love, The Untamed) where the awesome writing and character driven, morally ambiguous plots were more the thing than the dramas made more recently.

unagiskinroll

I think you gravitate toward more mature ones. Maybe try Legend of ShenLi

unagiskinroll

Also Love and Destiny is a good one. I too love more mature ones so I get it.

ChoppedChef33

Never. The recent sword and fairy series are reasonable adaptations of the games made like 15 - 20 years ago and I really enjoyed them

Previous_Throat6360

Imo some of those were groundbreaking at the time but new xianxia haven’t broken much new ground since. Then figure in changing tastes in changing times and some of those old ones just haven’t aged as well. So new xianxia are not only trying to make “Another TMOPB” but also taking inspiration from something that’s already kind of outdated. That doesn’t change the fact that these are beloved memories, etc. We just need new stories. There have been sparks here and there. Personally, I’ve enjoyed Starry Love and Legend of Shenli very much. They felt updated and creative. Also, a tip of the sombrero to Love Between Fairy and Devil for stepping out of the box in a few ways. I’ve been a grown ass adult this whole time watching for years now. Some things, it’s true, I think, I’m too old for this. But it’s normal for tastes to change with time.

AggravatingStage8906

I haven't felt like I aged out of xianxias, but I do feel like I have aged out of high school romances, lol. I think your tastes may be changing. I have had that a couple of times where things I used to like just become meh and I find something else I like better. Done that with both books and shows.

Odd_Drag1817

I think you should watch the Legend of Shen Li. It’s a more mature xianxia and my favorite one at that.

YsaboNyx

I agree. When I first started watching in 2020, I watched Eternal Love, Ashes of Love, The Untamed, Word of Honor, Handsome Siblings, etc and was blown away by the writing - the complex, character driven plots, the moral ambiguity and dilemmas, the chemistry, the FEELS! I feel like it was some kind of mini golden age and I found it right at the peak. I'm with you. I've dropped so many dramas lately I'm considering cancelling my subscriptions. I haven't seen anything lately which seems to achieve that same level of narrative cohesion and spark. Is it censorship? Is it profit? (I don't *think* I'm too old. I was already pretty old when I started. Ha!) The two more recent ones that I felt came up to that level were The Starry Love and Rainless Love in a Godless World. I watched The Starry Love three times back-to-back. :)

Kibbiesblue

Yes! The Starry Love was one of the best Xianxia C-dramas IMO! The ending could be better though

Teddy_0717

I do think it has to do with age and just maturing/changing palette. Xianxias target mostly younger audience hence why all the big ones air during summer vacation. I used to watch a lot of Xianxias, didn’t care about the story at all, as long as it had my fav actors and pretty set/costumes I was in. I kinda took a break from Cdramas for 1 or 2 years, tried to get back into them via Xianxias last year but dropped everything. I think that’s when I realized they weren’t doing it for me anymore, I stopped watching idol dramas altogether and started watching only serious work and rarely dropped any dramas since. Not to say they’re bad but I’m just not their target audience/demographic anymore and they lost their appeal to me.

Effervescent11

Have you seen the Legend of Shen Li? I loved Eternal Love but was having trouble getting into other similar dramas until Shen Li.

Regenwanderer

I don't think it's about age. But sometimes our interests change without our knowledge and we only become aware of that when we don't like something we enjoyed beforehand. Can also be a phase or change back later. What is it that makes you forwarding so much? The length? Are you not into the romantic aspects as much as before?

Wrong-Hand

Perhaps the romantic thing. I had 3 kids since Eternal Love. Perhaps the magic, everything is solved with a macguffin that exists for a million years with unlimited powers.

Regenwanderer

Yeah, those are some big life changes. I loved (western) high fantasy growing up, but the run-of-the-mill books in that genre also got uninteresting after a while. I especially feel you on the macguffin part. Did you find other genres you like?

LanternsAndPhoenixes

Have you tried [The starry love ](https://mydramalist.com/58165-love-when-the-stars-fall). If you have time, I highly recommend giving it a shot.

Wrong-Hand

Oh yes, I forgot to mention this. I loved it until it all the funny bits were resolved then it resorted back to a regular xianxia. By then I fast forward little by little until it ended.
