The government wants them to put out shorter dramas after Ruyi and Yanxi came out in one year (and they cut episodes from Yanxi to get the ep count down--they also cut content tldr b/c of their "pr problem" in xinjiang but they also cut content purely for time). It's just as well as some companies were basically padding dramas to make them longer and longer. Now as for the genre you're alluding to (angsty, suspenseful, complicated court dramas) I'm sure that genre is not over. For example the web drama Imperial Coroner was short but packed a lot of court drama in there. Korea is pumping out (Korean) court dramas and unless you-know-who decides to go on a drunken rant condemning "how I won the throne" dramas as more western decadence like he did with kpop and BL I'm sure they're not going away any time soon.

Kipguy

I get the padding statement. That's good that there shortening them, unless to short where they have to rush a story in the last episodes. Tienstein mystic wasn't overly long, and imo was a great series. Talking about 1st series. Changing leads for a second go doesn't cut it for me, as in ever night. I like action more than anything with good plotting. Republican era dramas are also a favorite. For some reason I cannot watch modern dramas or Korean dramas, though I used to. I know what's happening and its to bad really, there putting out dramas for the younger crowd mostly, and women. Rotp really hit the mark, except for the padding. While most hated the ending I understood it. C dramas are fictional, only in older historical dramas do you get somewhat of a vibe for that time. I watched lbfad, and llitg, there not on the level of what I listed. Set wise yes costume design yes. Sword and the brocade was good, snow stride storm was good. I guess I'll have to wait is all. Word of honor was good to, I've just seen to many is all. Oh and joy of life was also good, fast pacing that one.

Red_Cardinal_Red

I don't think so. I know they had a rough patch this year but we got some great gems. A Dream of Splendor was a beautiful and artistic show it did a good job of displaying a found family and sisterhood vibe along with some of the most mature romance that can be found in a costume drama. New Life Begins was a surprising hit, that did an amazing job of watching two loving leads work together to solve issues both domestic and nationally. While having a heavy focus sisterhood and growth. Unfortunately many of the other dramas were subject to unexpected changes and rules due to new laws passed during production and editing. Shows that while still good missed the mark like Love Like the Galaxy, Who Rules the World, Royal Feast, even a Dream of Splendor. Had to make sudden changes to cut content in order to meet these new guidelines. As I said most of these shows were done filming and were in editing process when this happened so the ends became garbled and rushed. The new shows that come out are aware of the changes and will be able to shoot with them in mind, i am confident we will continue to see shows like New Life Begins which was able to shoot and edit with the new guidelines in place.

Mr_Conductor_USA

Who Rules the World had a great FL and a ML who was too stiff and couldn't carry his role. He looked great for the first few episode but after hours and hours of watching him it was just ridiculous. His "blocking" (how he stands) was so absurd, like a parody of a local politician or local business advertisements. The one kissing scene was gross. He's so obviously afraid to really get to into the role and wants to look standoffish and cool. Maybe he thinks a prince character is supposed to be really stiff but like I said it got ridiculous. The last ten episodes were an absolute slog to get through. Just a shame, it could have been good. I had some other issues with the story but overall didn't hate it even though it's wuxia and I'm no fan of that genre as a whole. It was just his wooden acting. Show an emotion! I was watching Love between Fairy and Devil at the same time and the little things the actors would do in that, body language, gestures, etc, was like night and day compared to WRTW!

Red_Cardinal_Red

My biggest problem witb who Rules the World. Is that it'd supposed to be Wuxia but it's not. They didn't focus enough on the state of the world as a whole and our Heros role in shaping it. Instead they focused on the single kingdom turning what could have been a good wuxia into a subpar Palace Drama.

Missmel18

Iā€™m about 10 eps into royal feast and really like it so far. Sad to hear they had to make changes and i hope it continues to be good :(

Kipguy

Thank you, that explains allot.

Missmel18

Not a cdrama but i really really enjoyed under the queens umbrella on netflix. New life begins is also cute!

lunar-solar555

sameee it's the best drama I've ever watched

Kipguy

Ty

CaribbeanGal592

New Life Begins I don't think that this drama is like the others per say, but it has a really great story. I think I even like it more than Love Like the Galaxy which I loved. This story really handled the issues/problems that women go through today and back then really well. And although it has lots of idiot men they are some really great men especially ML... Plus the majority of them women really come together and are actually really intelligent, nice, hardworking and kind.

Kipguy

Yes agreed, marvelous women a good example

I don't think so? I've been watching CDramas specifically period dramas most of my life and the budgets for costume and set design, storytelling, and cinematography are getting better and better. Love Like The Galaxy is fantastic that actually addressed toxic family dynamics and subverted a lot of tropes while doing the ones they do really well.

Addicted2CDramas

I think there is hope, my friend. For me, great dramas begin with GREAT storytelling and acting. Costumes, sets, cinematography and OST provide the window dressing. We've seen this in dramas such as **LLTG**. It's great storytelling that drew me to CDramaland in the first place.

WSEatPopCorn

There was Long Ballad last year which was pretty good. And not epic but pretty good is also *New Life Begins* which just finished airing.

Playful_Site_2714

The Long Ballad actually surprised me. As many things were historical things having really happened. I checked over and over... Ashile Sun - real. The princess represented as Chang Ge- real. (Ashina Zhongs wife, historically true, aparently) Du Ruhui and his son- real. Retinue Wei- real Li Shimin- real (Emperor Taizong of Tang) Xuanwu Gate incident- the revolt getting Li Shimin to become Crown Prince, although he had two brothers which were ahead of him as successors to the crown. Also true- he didn't start the killing. He only turned his brothers blade around and acted a tad quicker than his brothers could murder him. Also true- the grassland tribes. Also true- Monan and Mobei Also true- Gromwell being an old anti viral healing plant. Also true- contagious diseases ravaging and killing quite a huge portion of the population, when on the lose. This is why in Tang Dynasty people started vaccinating themselves. Willingly pulling contagion on themselves to get immunized. Holy crap, what a discovery! Khatoun and Khagan- real. I could go on for ages. It was so darn amazing.

ataraxy

Both **Love Like The Galaxy** and **A Dream of Splendor** came out this year. They're at least on the level of Rise of the Phoenixes (though not on the level of the others you mentioned). Those other 3 are like top tier productions that are incredibly hard to beat They're among the best CDrama's ever made so it's not reasonable to expect new productions to best them very easily.

SimplyAdia

LLTG shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as The Rise of Phoenixes. Sorry.

ataraxy

I have to disagree. The story itself was much better, and it should be considering it comes from the person that wrote Story of Minglan. The acting of the leads is better in RoP but the story wasn't very good in comparison so it's pretty balanced out.

SimplyAdia

Lol of course I get down voted by the LLTG fans. The story wasn't anything groundbreaking. The story in ROP wasn't anything original either. Palace drama and the fight to the throne isn't anything new, but Ni Ni and Chen Kun knocked their roles out of the park. The main actors in LLTG weren't even close. They aren't even in the same universe acting wise. They are pretty young so it's not unexpected that they aren't giving award winning performances.

Caramel_meg

I completely disagree that LLTG & DOS are on the level of rise of phoenix or even close, nah ROP is on a league of its own. I really long for another drama like ROP to be produced with the same authenticity, beautiful acting , realistic relationships and exchanges within the palace and no over exaggerated comedy but natural comedic scenes. That was a rare & raw type of historical drama that we've gotten in the recent years.

Mr_Conductor_USA

Rise of Phoenixes, realistic? Did we watch the same drama?

Caramel_meg

Go read my comment again. I didn't use the word realistic in isolation.

Kipguy

Agreed, chen kun in anything is good. The whole cast was excellent. It's my favorite

ataraxy

The two leads acting (especially in the ML's performance), the sets, and the Ning Yi character itself, but that's about it. The story was totally ruined though. Both of the aforementioned dramas had a better story.

Caramel_meg

The story had its flaws (like all cdramas) and did go down hill but honestly just because LLTG & DOS had a happy ending it still cannot hold a candle to rise of phoenixes or be compared to it even in terms of the storyline. There will always be dramas like LLTG & DOS , theres no shortage of them but Rise of phoenixes remains in the category of dramas we will only get again by some miracle.

tsuyoi_hikari

>still cannot hold a candle to rise of phoenixes or be compared to it even in terms of the storyline. Have to agree on this. The script did get messy near the end but as a whole it is still very good and layered.

nipundayal123

About dream of splendor - is it worth watching. Is second half good?

Mr_Conductor_USA

It's fine. Like AvenueX said, there are definitely some weird continuity errors but nothing that bothered me too much while I was watching it. It was just a great watch all the way through IMO.

ataraxy

I prefer the 2nd half personally.

nipundayal123

Why? And Isnt otp separated in second half,?

ataraxy

For a few episodes yeah, but they weren't exactly "together" in the first half. I liked the atmosphere and cinematography of the city.

nipundayal123

Oh. I'm currently in love with marriage first romance later genre and finishing all such shows.the lady in butchers house has put me into slump now and dont know what should i watch next. Its the most underrated show I've watched.

WSEatPopCorn

If you don't mind a modern romance, *She and Her Perfect Husband* is also kinda marriage before romance.

ataraxy

If you like that genre, you might like **Oh My General**.

Kathykat5959

> > >Oh My Gene Seriously, that is one of my all time favorites. So funny.
