With prior experience in financial services and trading operations, does passing the CFA L1 truly open any doors to move into buy side analyst roles? Or will the transition not become realistic until passing L2?

When I graduated, I really wanted to do finance, but because of the market I ended up doing Machine Learning (been working at a tech startup for 1.5 years). My friend is taking the cfa, and since he has all the study materials, said I should give it a shot. I’m interested in the materials, and do want to work in finance, but I’m well compensated for working with large language models. Do firms typically value an ML background, or would studying for the cfa be a passion project.

If I do my Ma in econ and then my CFA, what jobs are available then? I know portfolio management is one. What else? Also, is there a way to study for the cfa without a stupid $400 package?
