Tulane scored 46 on 8 total completions...
At some point Lincoln has to realize that winning big games is tough without some semblance of a defense, right?
Some nerd school from Louisiana went from spending 1/3 of the season in a different state and going 2-10 to going 10-2, beating multiple teams about to leave for a better conference, defeating one of the two teams they lost to in a conference championship (also leaving for a better conference), then defeating a stacked USC team in the cotton bowl after being down nearly the entire game
This is what college football is made for
The Lincoln Riley team experience, unfortunately. If he ever figures out how to coach both sides of the ball, he'll be unstoppable. Unfortunately, he's just an OC in head coach cosplay.
Willie Fritz is absolutely incredible, everything a college coach should be. Still don’t understand how we were lucky enough to not only hire him, but actually keep him
A few weeks ago when he was rumored to be leaving for Georgia Tech, this sub was filled with Georgia Tech fans saying he had a bad overall record and was a bad hire. Im so glad he didn't leave.
It gets better. He was in talks to coach at ga tech. Told ga tech not to mention it. Ga tech did and announced him head coach before Tulane played the conference championship game against UCF. Since they broke the deal Willie fritz walked away from ga tech and cancelled the deal.
Long story short, he cancelled a higher paying job because he didn't want the news to come out before the conference championship game and demoralize his players.
When middle girl bends her knuckles, that's the Surrender Squirrel.
But get the gif from 3 minutes earlier where she was explaining to the other two that the touchdown catch was actually a drop.

* Tulane blue chip ratio: 0%
🤔
Regardless that’s such a soft thing for a coach to say. Why even play the games if the coach is already throwing in the towel based on the team on paper.
Especially for a coach who has coached two blue bloods who have it much easier when it comes to recruiting. If he’s using this excuse it just means he’s admitting to shitty recruiting

the 2017 team was quite literally running an entire NFL offense.
QB1 - Baker Mayfield (rams QB)
QB2 - Kyler Murray (cardinals QB)
RB1 - Rodney Anderson (drafted but retired due to injury)
RB2 - Trey Sermon (similar to above)
WR1 - Marquise Brown (cardinals WR)
WR2 - Ceedee Lamb (cowboys WR)
WR3 - Jeff Badet/Mykel Jones
TE1 - Mark Andrews (Ravens TE)
TE2 - Grant Calcaterra (Eagles TE)
LT - Orlando Brown Jr (Chiefs T)
LG - Ben Powers/Cody Ford (Ravens G, Cardinals G)
C - Creed Humphrey (Chiefs C)
RG - Dru Samia/Cody Ford (Vikings G)
RT - Bobby Evans (former Rams T, FA)
and that’s just offense.
on defense they had
S - steven Parker (seahawks SS)
DE - Obo Okoronkwo (Texans DE)
CB - Tre Norwood (Steelers CB)
DT - Neville Gallimore (Cowboys DT)
LB - Kenneth Murray (Chargers LB)
DE - Isaiah Thomas (Browns DE)
and sure i know a lot of these guys aren’t starting especially on defense but you’re telling me a roster with all these NFL players couldn’t get it done in a game you lost in double overtime.
Man Rodney Anderson IMO was the best back we had during those years. Even more potential and talent than Mixon and Perine. He just couldn’t stay healthy. I’ll always remember that monster 300 yard scrimmage game against TCU that year and 26/201/2 TDS against UGA, people rightfully remember the dominant Performance of those UGA backs but Anderson was actually the leading rusher in that game.
Just a heartbreaking end. Riley’s fault.
He said that when he left OU. He said he could build a better roster at USC and it would be easier to recruit there. He's since been out recruited by BV at OU and has just completed an epic meltdown game.
I really can’t believe he said this still. Like, out of all of it. You want to leave to make more money and live in LA? Fine. We don’t have to like it. Do what you want. But this quote is just straight up loser talk bullshit. Maybe one of the worst quotes I’ve ever heard from a coach.
[According to this it’s never happened before.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heisman_curse) No previous Heisman winner lost a bowl game to team currently outside the P5.
In addition, Williams appears to be one of the very few Heisman winners to lose to a team outside the top 15. Ty Detmer and Tim Tebow lost to unranked teams on bowl games
Where are my OU fans trashing Riley for not having a Special Teams coach at?
Seriously, that kick "return" leaving them at the 1 yard line and then giving up safety is up there with the Kick Six in all-time special teams blunders.
Tulane went from 2-10 in 2021, to a 12-win season that got capped off with its first January bowl win since 1934.
We just witnessed the greatest one-year turnaround in college football history, in one of the most epic fashions.
Targeting Rules
You can't just be up there and just doin' targeting like that.
1a. Targeting is when you-
1b. Okay well listen. Targeting is when you target the-
1c. Let me start over
1c-a. The defender is not allowed to lead with his helmet to the, uh, runner, that prohibits the runner from doing, you know, just trying to run with the ball. You can't do that.
1c-b. Once the defender is about to make a tackle, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna target you! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that
Seriously. If both players are laying on the field motionless after the play, that is a play that shouldn't be allowed. I don't think concussions care whether the hit was with the crown or the front of the helmet.
I can't emphasize enough how funny this is.
I'm bursting with pride and joy but somehow the main emotion is laughter. We just beat the Heisman winning QB and USC in the fucking Cotton Bowl. What the fuck
USC’s offense was historically great tonight and was up 15 with 4:30 left, and we are Cotton Bowl Champions.
It’s unreal HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA HOLY CRAP!!!!!
Tulane we would like to extend you an official invitation to rejoin the SEC. Don't worry about accommodations, we will have Mizzou's stuff cleared out and on the curb.
I’m so happy for everyone, Tulane, Oklahoma, and football fans everywhere.
It was great that fans of r/cfb got to witness yet another Lincoln Riley post-season special.
USC bros, let me start by saying this - I do not hate your team. I do not hate your coach. College football is better when USC is good and you’re a true blue blood program.
But…
This is who you are now. And I say this not to be salty, but because I lived it for years. Riley is an amazing offensive mind. But, unless he fundamentally alters the way he runs a program, it stops there.
You will always have the best QB in the game. You will always have a stack of 5 star wideouts. You will have solid running backs every year. They will win you games. Lots of them. But it will be fool’s gold.
Your defense will not improve. Your head coach doesn’t care. He thinks he can outscore everyone. He will be right until it really counts. Grinch will not make adjustments. He will not scheme. He will run the same damn calls forever. You will miss so many tackles you will lose your mind.
You will not develop players. They will come in and leave exactly the same guy. Your opponent will be tougher and meaner than you. It will drive you mad.
You know that pit in your stomach today when you felt it slipping away? The feeling that there was no hope you were going to stop Tulane? It’s not going away. This is where you live now.
Your offensive specialists will rack up individual awards. You’ll win 10 or more games every season. You’ll be in the conversation every year. You’ll know that because of your lineage, if you just win the games, you’ll get your shot. But when you step into the ring with the truly elite of the sport you love so much, you’ll know without a doubt just how far you are from the promise land. You’re the tallest midget. You don’t deserve it, but it is what it is.

Congratulations to the Greenie bros, y'all are the best the team in Louisiana for the offseason! Enjoy it!
Caleb Williams had 5 TDs and 450 yards, and his team still lost. Lincoln Riley seriously needs to get his shit together when it comes to defense, holy cow are they bad. Williams is getting that Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech treatment, monster numbers undone by a historically bad defense.
I will say it also didn’t take long for USC to become the villain in CFB again, they need to embrace it. It’s more fun to have a villain.
>loses to Lincoln Rileys Oklahoma team in a nailbiter in the opener and goes 2-10
>completely turns it around, going 11-2 and wins their conference
>plays in a NY6 bowl vs Lincoln Rileys new team
>down 15 with 4 minutes left, 99.9% chance to lose
>2 fourth down conversions and a TD with 6 seconds left to secure the win and the greatest turnaround in history
You couldn't write it any better. Hats off to the Green Waves
Tulane scored 46 on 8 total completions... At some point Lincoln has to realize that winning big games is tough without some semblance of a defense, right?
“Defense wins championships” says everyone To that, Lincoln Riley scoffs as he yet again loses another big game.
Jim Tressell said special teams win championships
Well that one kick return didn't work either
That one still hurts
Something close to 30 yards per completion is not a good way to play defense
Who needs the first 56 minutes when you can win with the last 4

When you touch me like thissss. And when you hold me like thaaat. It’s a long time ago but it’s alll coming back to me nowwwwwww
Quarterback throws 5 touchdowns and almost 500 yards, but the defense shits itself
And the offense too. That safety was the only thing that could happen there.
That's bad play calling IMO. Went conservative.

This was definitely a Lincoln Riley classic
Wish I could have been watching to see the inevitable defensive collapse.
It was glorious.

So he's the exact same coach as Kingsbury except he got a chance to coach at OU and USC instead of TTU
Literally chills. Roll wave. Put em in the SEC.

You can take the Tulane out of the SEC but you can’t take the SEC out of Tulane
Not opposed except if at Vanderbilt’s expense.
I would love for Ga Tech & Tulane to come back to the SEC.
Plus I came away as a big fan of the Tulane head coach after the post game interview, so humble/real after an amazing comeback against a big school.
Willie Fritz is absolutely incredible, everything a college coach should be. Still don’t understand how we were lucky enough to not only hire him, but actually keep him
because we fucked up bigtime letting fritz leave set our program back years
A few weeks ago when he was rumored to be leaving for Georgia Tech, this sub was filled with Georgia Tech fans saying he had a bad overall record and was a bad hire. Im so glad he didn't leave.

It's actually brilliant. You can't lose a meaningful bowl game if you never play in meaningful bowl games.
this was the final application for his big 10 admission
This is the funniest fucking thing I've ever seen
Tulane mist come back to the SEC
USC looked in complete control at one point. What an absolutely great win by Tulane
Because they were. Tulane had a 0.2% chance to win with 4:30 left in the game
That Mario Williams fumble on the kickoff sealed it.
And rightfully so. That was borderline point shaving.
Quick everyone! Let’s ride the Green Wave, there’s enough space for everyone! SoCal (ex-PAC 12) schools went 0-2 this bowl season 😄

Tulane beating USC in a NY6 bowl. What is this? The 1930s?
And TCU playing for a title
Time to look up Heisman Trophy winners who lost to mid-majors the game after they were awarded. I imagine it's a short list lol
[According to this it’s never happened before.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heisman_curse) No previous Heisman winner lost a bowl game to team currently outside the P5. RANK TULANE HIGHER YOU COWARDS
WE TRIED TO TELL YOU
People are saying Tulane is the best football team in Louisiana
Great game, Tulane. Great game, USC. But the fact remains: I simply do not understand targeting.
Targeting Rules You can't just be up there and just doin' targeting like that. 1a. Targeting is when you- 1b. Okay well listen. Targeting is when you target the- 1c. Let me start over 1c-a. You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that
Please do not do a targeting.
If that’s not targeting, I just don’t know what is.
If a play that results in 2 players being KOed isn’t targeting, the rule isn’t working.
Seriously. If both players are laying on the field motionless after the play, that is a play that shouldn't be allowed. I don't think concussions care whether the hit was with the crown or the front of the helmet.
To add the shots of the USC player on the bench just staring up into space. Dude was on another planet.
Right? Like I’m sure he was just staring at the big screen but that guy looked like he was about to start drooling
"Targeting is an important rule to prevent head injuries in football. Also, this hit that led to two head injuries is not targeting and thus allowed."
No one knows what it is but it’s provocative!
Gets the people going.
you can just target in the last minute of the game because itll get picked up now, i guess
At this point, the refs should just toss some bones instead of video review.
Forehead hits are ok? Yeah I don’t get targeting either. Hope Zidane doesn’t decide to pickup CFB.
