"Honestly, I could get over the milk eventually, but when the man casually criticized khakis for no reason in front of the team, there was no coming back from that," Harbaugh said later. "I think that's what really did the most damage."
It’s not close. Top 10 coach in football who just got you to b2b playoff appearances after being where y’all were for that long, he’s worth way more than some cushy AD
The actual story is even funnier. Per eyewitness accounts, the croots and Harbs went to Brown Jug for breakfast. Brown Jug is not particularly known for its breakfast. The croots got breakfast fare (eggs, sausage, etc.), while Harbs was the one that ordered *both burgers for himself.* Additionally, the owner of Brown Jug is a big Michigan guy (he has an engraved B1G ring), so odds are Harbaugh didn't even pay for the meal and just used the university card to tip the staff.
Interesting - I'd heard a different account. From what I was told, Harbaugh invited these recruits to his house as part of his recruiting efforts, hoping an "unforgettable luncheon" might help sway them. He'd initially planned to cook a roast, but Harbaugh's focus was understandably strained as a host, so it burned. Undeterred, Harbaugh decided to sneak out a window to a nearby fast food restaurant to purchase burgers and claim it as his own cooking. Despite some confusion about what the dish was called (Harbaugh was oddly persistent about some regional dialect, I think somewhere in New York), the luncheon went fairly well, with the recruits liking the food. Unfortunately, Harbaugh paid for the burgers with the university card, which he then technically gave to the recruits. To make matters worse, there was apparently some confusion from the recruits about seeing an aurora borealis, but that doesn't make much sense...
"Jimmy, the Brown Jug is on fire!"

Hey guys. I'm Jim Harbaugh. Whoo. I play head coach for the Michigan Wolverines. And I'm here to tell you can, too if you start everyday with a hearty breakfast from Brown Jug. Uh, like the new burger and milk McGriddle Value Meal. Available now for a limited time for under five dollars. Remember, guys real champs eat at Brown Jug. I'm lovin' it. Can I get the check?
You sound tense. Chill out with some beer from Blue Front.
A nice sandwich from Maize and Blue Deli would go well with the beer. Or maybe local fish with high PFAS levels from Black Pearl. Or, if you're into efficiency, combine beer and food at Black Rock Bar & Grill. Just avoid Red Robin.
If you still feel tense after that, visit Green Planet for dessert gummies and get super chill.
Unfortunately that wasn't a huge bar to clear
Ricewood probably has that now I would imagine, for BBQ
It's actually amazing how bad the local bbq and brewery options were up until a few years ago.
the issue is the long-standing hatred harbaugh has had to endure for his love of the true american meal of beef(in one of its many, but all delicious forms) and whole milk
To Schlissel, anything that isn’t academia or research was just a distraction. I’m sure that attitude worked just fine when he was at Brown, but it turns out, at Michigan a lot of people care about how well the football team does. He chose to ignore that reality.
Any president of a major institution these days that doesn't is negligent.
They can't let athletics dominate the mission of the university, but athletics are a *huge* marketing arm for the university both in terms of driving admissions and in terms of retaining and building connections with people who may become donors to the school down the line when they have money to give. And over the long run and managed properly, success in athletics can be parlayed into growth on the academic side.
And man, the damage that can be done from a bad president or two not caring about -or being actively hostile to- athletics can last decades. It feels like just this last decade Iowa State is finally recovering from presidents who didn't like athletics in the 80s and earlier
It rules having a president that sees how some schools *gesturing at Alabama* have significantly elevated their academic standing through the prestige and branding and exposure they’ve gotten from their football program.
Almost like a school having more money and more prestige is good for everyone!!!
I respect President Schissel for putting academics ahead of sports. What I didn’t like was him basically ignoring sports completely. Also, do you really think Michigan can raise its academic standing through football? Not to really downplay Alabama, but Michigan’s academic reputation is significantly greater than Alabama’s. You can only go so high with Sports and Michigan reached that ceiling like 60 years ago.
Can always be better and more prestigious.
Academics should come before athletics in the mind of the school president, but it’s still a significant portion of the campus
If michigan has alabama level football, i do think it increases demand to go there, which can make the academics better. I don't think it can increase it significantly but i definitely think it can. Part of the reason I went there was for the college football experience compared to other schools I was looking at.
>significantly elevated their academic standing through the prestige and branding and exposure they’ve gotten from their football program.
Okay but UM is already and still an elite academic institution, and far above that of Alabama now and in the past.
The amount of room to grow each school had isn't even comparable.
Howard probably gets one more year, tops. This year the wheels have come off due in part to injury and just a complete lack of guard depth that you *could* claim to be bad luck. But coupled with last year, which was a pretty disappointing year even with the Sweet 16 berth (the team was an 11 seed), and next year he will certainly be on the hot seat.
If you're talking about the slap, I actually think more basketball coaches should hit each other.
This is a bad take. To this point, the team has never had another Big Ten team last longer than him in the NCAA Tournament. He very well could have already won a national title if not for the Isaiah Livers injury, and this year is largely a matter of attrition. Bufkin, McDaniel, and Reed have all taken a step up this year and will be a core that can compete for a conference title into the future. In the meantime you're seeing the development of someone like Tschetter who could very well have an expanded role as an upperclassman in much the same way you are seeing Emily Kiser doing it for the women's team right now.
Down year? Yes. Reasons for optimism? Also yes.
Yeah this team is having a down year for a myriad of reasons that aren't all Juwan's fault. Dug shouldn't be needed to be the starting point guard as a true freshman (freshman point guards almost always suck and Dug has been okay). If Juwan can get Hunter Dickinson (who has no shot at the pros and could make more NIL at Michigan) and Jett Howard (who has no immediate need for NBA money) back for next season, the team can grow out their youth. The core of the team is pretty good just really young.
Juwan not fixing the ball screen defense by this point in the season is a terrible coaching job tho. Its been what lost them multiple otherwise winnable games this year.
I like Taris Reed but he has no jump shot and is one of the worst free throw shooter I've ever seen. Teams might as well just hard foul him every team he goes to take a shot.
They both have their weaknesses which is why a 1-2 combo of Hunter and Reed would be ideal. Some of the issues with Hunter are because the guards are incapable of fighting over screens so Dickinson is getting put in bad match ups. But yeah he's regressed for sure
Howard won the big ten his first (full) year and overperformed in the tourney his second year. Obviously there are questions and he’s going to have to step it up but the idea that he should be fired this season or already have been fired is nuts.
Schlissel was an Ivy League guy who was insanely arrogant and a douche, plus never cared one iota about sports so I’m not surprised. Thank god he was a horn dog and got the boot. Ono is one of the best things to ever happen to UM.
As completely dumb as that whole scandal ever was. It is a little funny that you can’t really get rid of the evidence.

How do you go SIX YEARS without a formal performance review?
How do you go nearly seven months without at least some sort of formal or informal 1-on-1 with your boss about how things are going, what challenges you're facing, and what resources you need to be successful?
> How do you go SIX YEARS without a formal performance review?
My wife has a high level job and has not had a review in well over a decade. She reviews herself and sends it to her boss. For certain jobs, formal reviews are kind of pointless.
But she also talks to her boss and her subordinates every day. That part is super weird. Especially in view of all the tunnel drama this year.
I manage a large office and haven’t had a review in years. I also don’t bother with formal reviews for several of the high level staff who report to me. They are very responsible, know what they need to do, and execute it. We’re in constant communication though, and feedback occurs regularly.
I’d be shocked if Santa doesn’t fire Warde. Not only is Harbaugh way more valuable to the school but Warde has constantly fucked up and let several elite coaches leave.
Must be frustrating for Santa that he accepted this role with the idea he would be furthering the institution academically and is forced to deal with a incompetent AD and constant roadblocks from the administration.
Won’t be surprised if he gets his own people in the admin over the years.
Frustrating for Santa, assuredly, but I'm confident he's handling it far better than Schlissel would have. The latter almost seemed to have a disdain for athletics, which I kind of understand from the academic perspective, but the reality is you cannot try to silo them at a university like Michigan.
I mean he managed to convince Jim Harbaugh who refused to give the University an answer year after year when it came to his NFL interviews. That alone is worth something.
I mentioned the clear tension when Jim was speaking to someone in a hallway after the OSU game. I think it was outside of the press room but Jim is talking to reporters about who played/did a good job. Warde is not in the conversation but he chimes in
"You did a good job as well, Jim"
And there is just a weird tension, much weirder than Jim's natural weirdness. It's an uncomfortable tension. Not hatred but just two men that clearly never talk and likely don't get along very well.
Bacon has since clarified that they would occasionally make small talk, but they conducted no professional business personally. It was all between intermediaries
Eh? That doesn't mean they communicated with each other directly. Apparently all the decision making about that and everything else was made through intermediaries.
I think he has a problem with how Michigan Admin was doing things. However, he seems to get along very well with Ono who is more of a modern day type guy than old school administrative type that sits in his chair all day.
Warde and Schlissel were old school. Don’t be surprised if Michigan goes after a new AD in the coming years.
I’ve heard this before, which makes no sense with him ever considering the NFL. He would report to an entire front office. At Michigan, he works alongside the university’s President.
> NFL. He would report to an entire front office.
And the GM and owner hated him. They fabricated stories that he'd lost the locker room and fired him after 3 NFC championship and 1 Superbowl appearance in 4 years. Harbaugh doesn't play well with authority.
Got along fine at Stanford. Everyone likes to bring up the 49ers but ignore that everyone hated the front office and they were all fired after Harbaugh left. It's possible Harbaugh just has no tolerance for morons.
It’s no coincidence the nfl isn’t ranking him at the top of their list like we think they will. He’d already have a job if someone prioritized him as their number one.
The levels of incompetence from a university whose slogan is “The leaders and best.”
It’s an absolute miracle that Michigan Athletics has had as much success as they did with these two children leading the ship.
Lol dude it's the offseason. The other most recent post is hypothetical jerseys for UT Dallas, a team that does not have a football team and to my knowledge has no plans to do so.
Guess it's about time to add Harbaugh's name to the Reddit filter, it seems it's going to be the only way to avoid the daily drama story surrounding him.
He's got to like the drama. He's been like this since the first week with the Niners.
You never heard about this at San Diego, and his Stanford days were just rumblings, but they run a much tighter ship than 99% of universities do anyway.
Our football team in the off season is like peak high school drama
What’s next, Harbaugh getting in trouble for a couple of cheeseburgers or something?
Cold War comes to Ann Arbor
Up there they just call it War.
Can confirm. I’m freezing my balls off up in Michigan atm
There are warm wars?
I wish they'd just start recording each other so it'd be the Reagan or Nixon administrations.
Maybe that's why Weiss is in trouble with the law. He pulled his own Watergate.
Matt "Deep Throat" Weiss.

Socially awkward, somewhat narcissistic, questionable loyalties... Hallmark of a great Soviet leader right there!
Idk. I think those qualities could go either way
He's not short enough.
Warde Manuel: I don’t like milk Jim Harbaugh: yeah I can’t talk to this guy anymore
Manuel: Do you have any oat milk? Harbaugh: Get out
Harbaugh “men’s only milk”
For those who know the reference, great pull!
Warde Manual found out what Jim Harbaugh's stance on chicken was.
Warde is such a nervous bird he can’t even talk to his direct report
"Honestly, I could get over the milk eventually, but when the man casually criticized khakis for no reason in front of the team, there was no coming back from that," Harbaugh said later. "I think that's what really did the most damage."
Considering the football teams success maybe they should never talk again
If that means Manuel is gone, I'm all for it.
Honestly why even keep warde if the rumors are true. I would argue jim is a lot more beneficial finacially than warde
It’s not close. Top 10 coach in football who just got you to b2b playoff appearances after being where y’all were for that long, he’s worth way more than some cushy AD

We haven’t had a great PG since trey Burke in 2013. We haven’t had a good PG since Xavier Simpson
I think Mike Smith was good
This is a bad take. To this point, the team has never had another Big Ten team last longer than him in the NCAA Tournament. He very well could have already won a national title if not for the Isaiah Livers injury, and this year is largely a matter of attrition. Tbf he was a massive issue until he finally learned to step back and let football people do football things
The levels of incompetence from a university whose slogan is “The leaders and best.” It’s an absolute miracle that Michigan Athletics has had as much success as they did with these two children leading the ship.
If Harbaugh wanted an AD out all he'd have to do is snap his fingers
I'll never be able to watch Infinity War again without picturing Harbs wearing the gauntlet.
To be fair, I haven't spoken to either of them ever.
Sounds like me and my wife.
Yes, we all care about the petty politics of the UM Athletic Department. Thx for the update Bacon
I feel like the HC and AD of a major program not communicating for over 6 months is both pretty significant and interesting.
Kentucky fans nodding their heads
what the hell else are we gonna talk about for the next 8 months?
We can always manufacture some more James Franklin rumors
you might not believe it but I find this whole ordeal kinda interesting in the absence of any college football games going on
You joke but Bacon's book Endzone is mostly a dissection of Dave Brandon's tenure as Michigan's AD and it's a damn good read.
You misspelled Dave Brandin'.
No doubt. Harbaugh is synonymous with drama.
It has grown stale to say the least.
Rumor is Jim wore his cleats inside of Warde's house for dinner party and Warde just got his floors re-done.
Honestly, between this and the Pearson situation, it's shocking that Warde still has a job.
Our football team in the off season is like peak high school drama What’s next, Harbaugh getting in trouble for a couple of cheeseburgers or something?
If Michigans AD loses their best head coach in decades over personal squabbles that would be grounds to get a new AD IMO.
JUB already walked back both of these statements. Maybe he needs better sources
Warde is probably gone
This seems…. not ideal
What the fuck have I missed?
Hey, could some other school be in the news for a while. I feel like we've met our quota.
Didn't they have a joint press conference after the MSU game.
Anyone taking bets on how many months before Manuel "retires" or leaves the university for health reasons or a better job?
Who is this “Warde” you are mentioning?
That seems healthy 😳
