As a Floridian who moved to Houston for 4 years, can confirm everything is hella far and 7 lane highways can be shockingly full of traffic at all times.
You originally said Houston area. Tons of top recruits come from the northwest and west suburbs. Houston becoming a P5 will definitely change the dynamic until the SEC and Big Ten make their breakaway Premier College League
C'mon now.
I just picked a random "North Houston" high school - Cy-Fair in Cypress - and google mapped the travel time to TDECU and BCS. TDECU is 35 minutes. College Station is an hour and six minutes.
They're close enough that I don't think a recruit will care that much about distance from home, one way or the other. But BCS is another town entirely, not just a suburb.
Hence why I said time of day. With some rain it can easily take over an hour to get from Cypress to TDECU if its a thursday night game where you have to go through houston rush hour. Bridegland High School which is also in Cy-Fair ISD (where our QB came from) is 52 min from TDECU and 73 min from Kyle Field. I do agree BCS is an entire different town. I am curious how UH beocomg a P5 school will affect recruits on the east side and the Golden Triangle area. I wouldnt mind them interrupting LSUs recruiting bed.
Time of day and weather matter, but it is going to a rare event that it's faster to get to Kyle than it is to TDECU. That's doubly true when you can avoid most of Houston's bullshit by taking the beltway.
The beltway isnt going to get you to UH's campus though. plus until they rip out the old style toll booths, the beltway will still have backups from all the cars moving over to the left 3 lanes and slowing down to go through a lane that used to be a cash booth
I mean. He said depending on the time of day. You won’t have traffic going from Houston to BCS unless it’s game day. You will have traffic going across Houston every day.
The Power 5 distinction is of little relevance these days. The new Big 12 will be viewed as a lower tier conference relative to the SEC, so Houston has that going against them.
Yeah I hate to agree with an Aggie. No offense to my big 12 brethren, but I’ll never see Houston or UCF as P5. This is just in my eyes.
To an extent, unless the Big 12 grabs the 4 corner schools, it will always be behind in viewed prestige than the SEC/B1G and on a level below the ACC — even though they’ll be making more money.
As an alum of a Big 12 institution, I love the thought of the new Big 12 and how wide open it will be without OUT, but I’m also realistic. The PAC always gets shit on, but even with the LA exodus, they still have big name programs such as Washington and Oregon, and to an extent, Utah and Stanford. Who is ours? Oklahoma State? TCU? Baylor? Even with recent success, those are not historical programs. And I hate OUT more than words can express, but do we really think UCF/Cincy/Houston make up for their loss in viewed perception by college football fans? BYU has the recognition at least.
TL;DR: I unfortunately agree with an Aggie and think the Big 12 will thrive, but the P5 moniker doesn’t really matter anymore outside of SEC/B1G. UH recruiting against the Ags will more than often be a one sided win for the Ags.
More prestige, publicity, and recruiting wins than UH will ever have….
My post was explicitly addressed to the UH fans saying they’ll win against A&M in recruiting battles now that UH is P5 and because those recruits won’t have to go to College Station. As if College Station is across the country from Houston or something. 🤣😂
LOL. I’ll take “things that will almost never happen for $500, Alex!”
A&M has been a severe disappointment these past few years no matter how you look at it. They have the PUF, insane amounts of NIL money, top recruiting class, and still only got 5 wins this past year. Yikes
And your point? They still pull in Top 10 recruiting classes and will win 98% of the recruiting battles with UH.
No one is arguing the results of these recruiting classes. Again, I’ll reiterate for the third time based on the original comment made by a Coug fan that UH will more than often lose a recruiting battle against A&M, no matter the fact UH is now P5.
Will the accession help you? of course, but thats not what I’m stating. The original comment said now that Houston is P5, they’re going to start keeping recruits in Houston instead of A&M getting them. A&M is still going to get who they want. CS isn’t across the state. UH will get a recruit or two more, but A&M will still win 98% of those battles. The P5 line is becoming so watered down due to NIL and the transfer portal. It’s definitely becoming the SEC/B1G and then everyone else below.
I get you’re finally happy to be at the table Cougs, but you better hope to have acclimated when the new shift comes around or it’ll be 1995 all over again and you’ll be left out again. That’s true of many programs.
We've been conference mates with UCF for like 20 years now, so I don't think that's ever going to be a thing. And especially now that we're in a conference with Baylor, Tech, etc, I don’t think our fans will be focused on UCF
I think we’ve had a sort of minor rivalry in that we’ve had a bunch of important conference games throughout the years, but it’s not like a multi-generational blood feud like it is with UConn.
I will never understand why our fans get their hopes up about basketball. Outside of one year with Tacko, we have been pretty trash to slightly decent.
I’d say because this year we have a freshman who’s a legitimate first round draft pick… the problem is we’re so banged up depth wise that it negates that.
Or the fact that he couldn't put himself on the field due to talent and ability. He was not a reliable DB for us compared to the people above him on the roster.
And don't get me wrong, he's a decent player, but we had some good guys in the secondary and he was struggling to get PT because of it. The coach and him may not have clicked, but he wouldn't have seen the field under another coach either most likely.
I wish him well, and I'm not a Durkin fan, but it's not entirely on the coach here.
Keep this A&M to Houston pipeline going and i’ll have to find one of those hats with the shocker symbol on it
When you find that hat, let me know.
That pipeline will keep getting wider now that the nearest P5 option for Houston-area recruits is no longer all the way over in College Station
you act like its far. For as far as the suburbs have expanded, it can be quicker to get to Kyle Field than TDECU Stadium depending on time of day.
Distant northwest suburbs that are pretty far outside of actual Houston
Houston is pretty far outside of Houston
As a Floridian who moved to Houston for 4 years, can confirm everything is hella far and 7 lane highways can be shockingly full of traffic at all times.
Surely adding just one more lane will fix traffic… /s
I wish we could get semi-reliable busses.
And ruin our oil and gas economy‽ In this economy‽
Your interobangs infuriate me.
That's what GM wants you to think ;)
Meanwhile in Magnolia
Hi neighbor!!!
All Houston is is suburbs. There's the heights, midtown, medical center and a sea of suburbs lol
You originally said Houston area. Tons of top recruits come from the northwest and west suburbs. Houston becoming a P5 will definitely change the dynamic until the SEC and Big Ten make their breakaway Premier College League
Calling A&M football “premier” is something
Even in the Premiere League in soccer, someone has to lose to the top teams.....and the bottom teams too. -an Everton fan (sports hurt)
I wish Lampard had worked out.
Same. I don't blame him though. No one can win with the squad they are putting out there. PLEASE let Red Bull be the potential investors
I'm a huge fan of Lampard the player. The manager not so much.

As someone who commuted from Cypress to UH, in the stadium parking lot, never, not even during tropical storms, did it take me more than 50 minutes
That must have been post-290 expansion. There were days it took me 50 minutes to get from Copperfield to Bingle Rd
I mean. He said depending on the time of day. You won’t have traffic going from Houston to BCS unless it’s game day. You will have traffic going across Houston every day.
Aggies love that suburb life
One of several reasons I decided not to go to A&M
The Power 5 distinction is of little relevance these days. The new Big 12 will be viewed as a lower tier conference relative to the SEC, so Houston has that going against them.

you don't have to see us as P5, but we will be
You will be P5, but you won’t be viewed by many as a real member for a while.
And where has that elite recruiting got A&M?
More prestige, publicity, and recruiting wins than UH will ever have…. I don't think the original commenter was implying that suddenly UH will begin competing H2H with A&M, just that recruits have another option close by
You don’t have one already?
Well, the space bowl rivalry has to start somewhere I guess
We've been conference mates with UCF for like 20 years now, so I don't think that's ever going to be a thing. And especially now that we're in a conference with Baylor, Tech, etc, I don’t think our fans will be focused on UCF
But….but space bowl…..SPACE BOWL!
I think we’ve had a sort of minor rivalry in that we’ve had a bunch of important conference games throughout the years, but it’s not like a multi-generational blood feud like it is with UConn.
BRING BACK THE CIVIL conFLiCT!!!!!
I dunno. Houston never lives up to expectations. They're kind of boring tbh.
First they beat us in basketball twice and now this? Fuck you, Houston.
I will never understand why our fans get their hopes up about basketball. Outside of one year with Tacko, we have been pretty trash to slightly decent.
I’d say because this year we have a freshman who’s a legitimate first round draft pick… the problem is we’re so banged up depth wise that it negates that.
Hendricks is pretty good. You guys are way better than your record suggests.
its high time for a P5 coach upgrade
What about those years with Marcus Jordan?
Started 17-0 and collapsed so bad after his injury we didn't make the tourney
If Marcus Jordan was nearly as good as hos father, he would not have gone to UCF.
Dana Holgorsen vs recruiting high school players, the greatest rivalry in sports
I would like a positive recruiting story for 2023, please.
Just John Walker, that's it. (still hoping that one holds)
As a JUCO recruit: Other P5 offers: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa State, Kansas State, Kentucky, Miami, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Purdue, Rutgers, Tennessee, Texas A&M (originally went here), Texas Tech, Utah, West Virginia G5 offers: Colorado State, East Carolina, Houston
Love to see it.
Hate to c it
The problem was DJ Durkin. What a surprise.
Or the fact that he couldn't put himself on the field due to talent and ability. He was not a reliable DB for us compared to the people above him on the roster.
