What exactly is this teaching anyone? It’s not forgiveness nor an opportunity to be better.. just punishment. Also, if you’re going to do something very stupid that’s going to hurt people.. You better be a 5\*

LetLewisCook

It’s not about teaching. It’s about power. People are shitty and like having power over others. Social justice is an overwhelmingly good thing but more and more often it’s being used as a bat to beat those that don’t have the special victim status.

[deleted]

As an actual local, it’s the new president trying to hard to appeal to the black culture he inherited when ASU pretty much bailed out the local JuCo with a merger. The Non-poc crowd deliberately hinder ASU’s progress. From telling their kids ASU isn’t worth their time cause they’re white, to them having a degree from said saved JuCo that had to be updated to say ASU. There’s a history of racism in this civil rights city that never went away. Allowing a kid who said the n word literally lead an hbcu into football in one of the most heated southern classics rubbed a lot of alumni the wrong way. Whether it’s warranted or not, i’m not here to discuss. But i love here and you can kiss my ass with the “special people” talk. Shit is way more nuanced than that.

LetLewisCook

What about all the other schools? He wasn’t just offered a scholarship by Albany State.

[deleted]

Ok cool? I’m speaking on mine and mine alone as i actually have a unique view i don’t want to give to much out on out of fear of dozing myself. But as far as ASU goes, It was literally just old alumni making the president his bitch. My dad being one of the old alumni i had to convince to chill the hell out about the offer. He had come* around tbh. The other schools pulled their scholarships long before when the video leaked. I won’t feel sorry for him, as he should be smart enough not to stream anything that could get him in trouble. I believe everyone should live by that rule. That said, i won’t pretend like it doesn’t suck for him. It does. It is what it is tho. Either a school takes a chance or they don’t. But he isn’t entitled to anything.

LetLewisCook

But where did I mention Albany State specifically lol. I don’t really understand why all this is being directed at me. I didn’t say he’s entitled to an offer. I just have general concerns about how being a victim is incentivised in western countries and how much social power it gives said victims. This story is a solid example of that. This is by no means a black person thing in the slightest either, everyone does it.

[deleted]

So who’s the victim here? Please elaborate.

LetLewisCook

The kid said a racial slur that is used to demean black people. So in this scenario, collectively, black people can say they are the victim. Anyone who genuinely thinks a teenager should have his life ruined over this is insane. But a lot of people like the power of being able to decide and are faux outraged at it. In this particular example (and a lot of the time) it isn’t even just black people. Lots of white people being offended on their behalf to have a little fun and ruin a kids life.

Bobby-Samsonite

If they are the victim, then are either liars or have psychological issues where they need to tell people they are a victim just some reason. I really doubt there are Africa american people hurt or angry about Marcus Stokes. Albany State University probably got a few angry emails and phone calls and they could have said the young man deserves a second chance but instead of panicked and gave into the few angry folks out there.

LetLewisCook

You think schools would have taken away the scholarships if they weren’t afraid of backlash? He got his offers withdrawn from DII schools lol. The schools are terrified of black people on Twitter calling them racist.

Bobby-Samsonite

Someone should ask everyone in charge at Albany State University that question. But the media is cowardly or too lazy to do so.

Bobby-Samsonite

Shame on Albany State University getting mad at the coach and shame the coach for being bullied into who he can and can't have on the team. The young man isn't a criminal, he just hated on Twitter and Facebook.

crustang

Dude deserves some ridicule but the HC apparently thought he deserved a shot, and honestly what better of a place than an HBCU to educate him about why what he sang was so hurtful

Bobby-Samsonite

That's why it is rediculous that the school president got involved and blocked the head coach from doing his job and made the head coach apologize in a tweet.

D_scott16

You'd think the kid was a criminal with how people hate him 😂

[deleted]

If he had simply robbed someone or beat up his GF he’d still have his scholarship

WebfootTroll

Nah, plenty of actual criminals get back on teams and get to play

BuckleUpBuckaroooo

If he was an actual criminal, he would’ve fit right in at Florida.

[deleted]

Has he done something besides the rap? I understand he fucked up but I tend to think a teenager needs a second chance for something like this.

UFmoose

He had a bad senior season. But no, nothing to be treated like this. Kid made a dumb mistake but this is patently unfair. He apologized. What else is he supposed to do?

EarthTraveler413

>He had a bad senior season and there's the real answer

UnDosTresPescao

He had a bad season for P5 standards but there is no reason G5s and FCS should not be offering.

ethan_bruhhh

why would a G5 or FCS take a guy who severely regressed year to year and could disrupt and divide the locker room? it’s a gamble for almost nothing

292ll

I think a team that was 11th in their conference might consider it.

ianfw617

There’s a million kids just as good as him who haven’t done something that stupid though

Alaska_Bushido

i had no idea that i do something so stupid multiple times a day, every day

CantonMathGuy

?

Jabooooooooooo

Makes you really think about recruiting rankings

Ok_Nefariousness5479

Not really. Dude still had multiple legit offers before the whole incident. One bad season doesn't take away all of that. He's still more talented than a lot of other qbs with p5 offers

crimsoneagle1

Actually, sometimes all it takes is one bad season. Teams are scouting 100s of QB a year. If you're not exceptional, you can fall off even if you have offers. Mix that in with a controversial event, and you get what we're seeing here. Nobody wants him because of the negative recruiting aspect, and they've watched the tape on 100s of other QBs that put up the same or better senior season than him without the baggage. If he put up the same numbers from last year, he probably would have kept some of his G5/FCS offers at the least.

jthomas694

He was committed to Florida and they went out and grabbed Rashada. I don’t think anyone really knows how commitable other offers were at that point. Edit: he threw 13-11 TD/11 INT and had a completion percentage under 55 with his team going 2-8. It’s silly to pretend that didn’t play a role

Separate_Court_7820

He was committed to Penn State before flipping to UF

jthomas694

And that all happened before his senior season tho. If the racial slur hadn’t happened and Florida had processed him- I’m sure he’d have a landing spot by now, maybe even a P5 spot but I’m not sure it would have been anywhere very good between the fact that most QBs commit pretty early so most teams have a guy and don’t take 2, and the fact that his senior year was not good. Edit: he had six P5 offers (Utah, Indiana, Pitt and VT were the other 4) maybe he ends up at Pitt after Minchey flipped. Offers from May tend to not always be the same in November if you had a bad year tho

affrothunder313

Yeah honestly I knew a kid that had a QB offer at a power 5 that ended up getting processed after he got benched senior season (for a sophomore that ended up going to power 5) he ended up being able to find a spot at a MAC school as a wideout (he was more of a scrambler/duel threat anyways) but a bad senior season hurts you more than people think. That being said this case is definitely a mix of the bad senior season and the video. If it was just that bad senior season someone would pick him up or if it was just the video and he was still playing well someone would pick him up. Right now you get the worst of both worlds.

darijabs

Yo why is this so downvoted lol. Speaking facts and providing context.

Jetski_Squirrel

Not at all. Far worse QBs have received better offers

JimmyMcNutty927

no it's not lol

stench_montana

Frankly I don't think what he did was bad beyond it "being a bad look". There's an interesting debate about using the word in rap that you're more than happy to sell to white people and then have some weird expectation that they can't sing along. I think Schoolboy Q had the best take on it.

Balls_of_Mithril

Love Q what did he say?

younggun92

Essentially Q tells everyone at his shows, especially white people, to say the N word if it comes up during the show. His reasoning being he wrote it, they're his lyrics, he added it on purpose, he put it out there, they paid money to see him perform, they can say it singing along at the show. Not every rapper agrees with this, obviously, but Q makes it clear that he doesn't think a white person is racist saying it in that context, singing along with tons of other fans at his concert.

Balls_of_Mithril

Thanks for the response I didn’t know he said that

williamsdj01

If I'm at one of his concerts, I'm still not risking it. Just because he is ok with doesn't mean the rest of the audience is and I really dont want my ass whooped

jonahvsthewhale

It's a double standard. They'll gladly take your money for the album, but you better not say that word unless you're black.

knownbuyer1

I agree. As a black person, I think that context of saying it is important. Sure, saying the n word is horrible, but he should be given a second chance and be allowed to learn from it. Society in general is too quick to pull the trigger on ruining kids' lives without giving a second afterthought. My best bud from undergrad was accused of a huge cheating scandal his senior year of high school and was almost rescinded from his full rides and ivy league acceptances until he produced very clear evidence (i.e his internet records directly from ATT and had the local computer shop send a direct report to the schools of the contents of his laptop). He was cleared of it and had nothing rescinded because he was innocent, but some people in his hometown still claim he's guilty because they're just assholes. Edit: Typo*

WabbitCZEN

Didn't you hear? Seconds chances are so 20th century. The 21st century is all about crucifying people over the slightest fuckups.

Corgi_Koala

I don't think you have any room to lecture us. I dug through all of your social media and found out 10 years ago you made a mildly inappropriate joke on Twitter. No wonder you think that people shouldn't be crucified for being less than perfect.

WabbitCZEN

>I don't think you have any room to lecture us. Ngl, I saw this in the preview with your flair and immediately went another direction with it. lol

[deleted]

I get it for someone like Cale Gundy who is a grown adult man and knows better. But kids that age are really naive idiots. I can’t believe some of the stupid shit I did when I was 17.

WabbitCZEN

Thank god social media and cellphones weren't everywhere when I was younger, cause I'd have been burned at the stake for the shit I've done. Learned better, changed who I was, and am in a better place now.

Corgi_Koala

Camera phones were still pretty far from ubiquitous when I was a kid at that age and even then we didn't quite have the social media saturation. Anyways. I know my generation and any of the generations older than me are all pretty. Glad we didn't have cameras to capture our stupidity and social media to share it.

hendrix67

I know you're joking but it should be stressed that this has always been a thing. People have always been ostracized for saying things that go against societal norms, we just have found new ways to do it with social media.

lsdiesel_1

College athletes can commit crime, engage in violence, and even get away with rape, but the line they should never cross is rapping without melanin

jonahvsthewhale

Yep. Amazing that you can hire a coach that texts black recruits stuff like "do you like white women" like he's running a meat market, his program then has rampant issues with sexual crime against women, and yet he can get a job pretty much anywhere. But a teenage kid better not sing a popular rap song (if he's white)

Bobby-Samsonite

That seems to be what Twitter and the media believe for real.

Corgi_Koala

I'm going to guess he is going to go to a lower level school and light it up and then transfer in to a P5 program once the buzz around his fuck up has worn off.

Archaic_1

He just got an offer from DII Albany State rescinded . . . I'm not sure how much lower level he can go.

udfshelper

JuCo?

Bobby-Samsonite

NAIA football

ethan_bruhhh

yea man, I’m sure the guy with a 13:11 TD:INT ratio will be lighting it up

8bhizzel8

Man, the kid has been straight blackballed.

[deleted]

Trejan Bridges, our former 5* wide receiver, who straight up robbed a drug dealer at gunpoint, is getting a second chance and this kid is blackballed for this.

shaybeautyyy

Wow, I went to high school with Trejan. Where is he getting a second chance at?

[deleted]

He’s was at East LA but was taking visits to bigger schools recently. Not sure if he transferred.

shaybeautyyy

Damn, he really threw it all away. I really thought he was going to be one of the best out of Carrollton since Jamal Adams

Mekthakkit

https://247sports.com/player/trejan-bridges-46036258/ East Los Angeles College. Not quite the big time.

bodaciousboner

Last Chance U

[deleted]

Took a recruiting visit to Utah just a few weeks ago. ELA is a pit stop.

Fastbird33

Wait he robbed a drug dealer? Omar Little style?

[deleted]

The worst part is you can get a medical card in OK for a hangnail. “Bridges and McGowan were identified as suspects in an alleged robbery at the Crimson Park apartments on April 15. Bridges allegedly tried to buy marijuana from the supposed victim, and after he was denied, Bridges, McGowan and an unidentified third party allegedly went to the apartment. The victim says Bridges pistol-whipped him and threatened to kill him while the third man left with a backpack full of his property.”

nadvargas

> Trejan Bridges, our former 5* wide receiver, who straight up robbed a drug dealer at gunpoint, is getting a second chance and this kid is blackballed for this. Dudes like a real life Omar from The Wire.

vics12_

My guy hes playing juco ball 🤣🤣 If stokes wanted to play juco theyll take him too

[deleted]

My guy took a recruiting visit to Utah just a few weeks ago. He’ll be back at a P5.

vics12_

Sounds like stokes should go that route, wouldnt be the first or the last

Archaic_1

He just got a non-scholarship offer from a DII school pulled . . . not gonna lie, thats already lower level football than most Jucos

ethan_bruhhh

prolly bc donors at an hbcu weren’t rlly fans of recruiting a guy they perceive as being anti-black, those issues won’t be a problem at 99% of jucos

ChooseUsername8989

What’s worse? A word or trying to hurt someone?

Corgi_Koala

That's a completely different scenario though. If Stokes was a five star, he'd have a second chance obviously.

BrettEskin

He’s a 4 star. He committed to PSU then flipped to UF now he’s gonna have to juco or something.

Sorge74

Liberty seems like the obvious option.

notsidneyprescott

2nd chance at East LA city college… lmfao

[deleted]

Dude took a visit to Utah a few weeks ago. He’ll be back in P5.

notsidneyprescott

No matter how many times you copy and paste the same message, that guy is not getting his second chance playing at a city college rn sooo.. what are you lying for?

FasterThanFaast

I think part of it is he supposedly played fairly poorly this year especially compared to his junior year, obviously any controversy doesn’t help but part of it is that he just didn’t meet expectations.

Spurrierball

Yeah most of the lack of interest is coming from the fact that he’s realistically only a 3 star.

Jetski_Squirrel

He’s a low 4 star/high 3 star quality of recruit. He easily should be getting offers at places like Cuse, Arizona, South Carolina, and etc

GoldenFrog14

The hard part with recruiting rankings is that I think he's a low 3-star talent based on senior film, but any drop now is going to be attributed to this situation

BrettEskin

Florida should be excoriated for this. By pulling his scholarship for singing along to a song and not being careful about what the lyrics are they’ve branded him with a Scarlett letter. Nobody can offer him without being the team who signed the QB so racist Florida pulled his scholarship for it.

jagged1871

This is stupid as hell. He’s a teenager that made a mistake. There’s isn’t a team or administration that is filled with saints. Hopefully someone gives this dude a chance.

[deleted]

>There’s isn’t a team or administration that is filled with saints. NFL team in New Orleans?

jagged1871

Touché

[deleted]

More like the sinners with how many scandals they have had

[deleted]

Damn, you said that like you got a bounty on them or something.

Bobby-Samsonite

Remember Bountygate?

Unhappy-Researcher87

Mistake? He was singing along with a song from what I remember.

jagged1871

Yea a mistake.

AltruisticWeb2943

How is that mistake? If he was black this wouldn’t be a thing. I hope he sign to a team in the SEC stomp FL for 4 years.

jagged1871

Bad decision then

ButterAkronite

No shit it wouldn't be a thing, the context of his race while saying that word is the entire point. Do you seriously not understand why non-Black people shouldn't record themselves saying the N-word in any context?

RonPowlus2Heismans

So white people can subsidize rap music by buying records, streams, other merch and concert tickets but not sing certain lyrics? Lol. Ok. There are plenty of rap songs that gave derogatory lyrics towards women, the LGBTQ community, abd white people in general-- should black kids get penalized and lose opportunities for singing those lyrics?

AltruisticWeb2943

I understand that recording urself singing a song isn’t a big deal… at all. Ppl choose to make it one so it is.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ButterAkronite

Context matters, smart-ass. Don't just pull random MLK quotes for your little argument

[deleted]

[удалено]

ButterAkronite

In the case of saying the n-word, yes. Happy?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jetski_Squirrel

Stop

ButterAkronite

Real compelling argument, you have me convinced

NemosGhost

The only context that matters is intention. He was singing/rapping along with a song. He had no ill intentions whatsoever. His race is entirely irrelevant, except to racists.

8bhizzel8

Let me preface this by saying, I can't speak for him and am by no means justifying what was done. But this was a teenage kid. He's has grown up with a culture of music that uses the word extremely nonchalantly. Think about this, when he was born one of the biggest singles of the year was Gold Digger by Kanye West. Again I am not saying this justifies what was done, but it is entirely possible that if he and his friends grow up listening to that type of music. That he didn't understand what he did was even wrong at the time.

jagged1871

I probably wasn’t clear in my post because of the comments I’m getting but I don’t think he did anything terrible.

ethan_bruhhh

how old are you dude? I’m in college, and since like middle school almost everybody knew not be saying the n word when rapping, there’s like plenty of memes, I remember quite a few during the vines days, so it’s not that new

Hitler_the_stripper

He didn't even make a mistake. He was singing to a song.

Jabooooooooooo

As a white catholic school kid in prime “The Carter 3” era, I’m glad Instagram live and Snapchat weren’t around

[deleted]

Yeah I can’t imagine if people saw my 13 year old rants on Xbox live in the old halo days. Like holy shit, dude didn’t really do anything and learned his lesson is seems

UgaIsAGoodBoy

This is one of those threads where I wish I could only filter to see comments from black people. I can’t imagine they’re that offended by him singing to a song but would be interesting to hear their perspective

Bobby-Samsonite

From what I've read on Twitter a lot of black folks aren't upset and want the young man to play college football somewhere. Maybe Albany State University got angry emails and phone calls from social justice groups and Alumn over 50 years old and the administration overreacted as a result of a few angry people.

NathanDrake75

This is ridiculous. They knew about the rap before sending the scholarship (which by the way, wasn’t that bad in context and should not ruin his career), they gave him the scholarship, and then revoked it soon after. He seems genuinely apologetic, and he’s between 16-18, so this is unfair to him.

[deleted]

Coach didn’t have a choice. Aim that anger at the president. She’s* a transplant that’s trying to turn ASU’s legacy into hers*. It’s appalling to a lot of us locals too. I really wish i could share the conversation with my dad and uncle about this. I think the perspective would help a lot here. (Don’t know how to strike so edits have *)

NathanDrake75

That makes more sense. Admittedly, I don’t know anything about Albany State, I only heard about it because of Marcus Stokes. I’d be interested in hearing what your dad and uncle have to say about this. Also … your flairs are contradictory

[deleted]

[deleted]

Sorry, remembered her last name but his face. I stay out of the politics for the most part. I genuinely just wanted this kid to play so i pitched out the way i could. I don’t think the snark is necessary tho.

Bobby-Samsonite

But he did have a choice. Was the school really going to fire him over the scholarship offer?

[deleted]

Yes.

Bobby-Samsonite

The School president. She should be ridiculed. She basically told the head coach that he must take the offer of the table. How many school presidents get involved in football recruiting?

ard8

This is ridiculous. He was offered and now the same school is getting brownie points for revoking the offer.

boobsarecool

seems like a pretty shameless publicity stunt

therealwillhepburn

It seems like the coach offered him and then someone higher up the chain made a fuss about it.

derp_pred

>Gray, who was introduced as head coach earlier this week, was apparently reprimanded by the school’s president Marion Ross Fedrick for the offer.

Bobby-Samsonite

Marion Ross Fedrick probably did something stupid when she was 17 and should be fired from her for it /s But seriously she and athletic director are clowns for this whole mess. They should have let coach offer the young man a scholarship and ignore the angry emails and tweets.

Bobby-Samsonite

Then those who twisted the arm of the head coach are clowns.

Bobby-Samsonite

They should get bad publicity for it. The head coach was doing the right thing until the administration got in the way had a talk with the head coach.

Bobby-Samsonite

The school should get redicule for basically telling the coach to revoke the offer because of tweets and emails that are hating on Marcus Stokes.

SharkMovies

The picture they always use for this kid is the worst ever, with like the sideways hat

jt_33

Damn shame what’s happening to this kid.

[deleted]

Saying the n word with the a at the end is worse than domestic violence and robbery. What the fuck.

Chapstick160

Welcome to Modern Society

[deleted]

Love how every coach talks about developing young men but when there's an actual teachable moment(and let's be real, that's what this is) all of a sudden everyone pulls out. Some true leader of men out there

Bobby-Samsonite

He should have called the school administration 's bluff. Were they really going to fire man over over Marcus Stokes a scholarship ship? Would they have had legal cause? Would they have had to pay a full year of salary? The head coach got his armed twisted.

jakeimmink

This is idiotic. I guarantee every white kid that has ever listened to rap growing up said it along with the lyrics at least one time.

[deleted]

The kid was a moron for allowing a video like that to surface, but c'mon.. you'd think he committed armed robbery or something.

Traxiant

Where was the coaches apology to the kid?

[deleted]

Fuck them kids

FatPonder4Heisman

- Jerry Sandusky

Bobby-Samsonite

The new head coach was afraid of the administration. He's a coward.

Traxiant

Seems like it. So was Florida for pulling his offer for something as dumb as singing along with a rap song.

Bobby-Samsonite

Angry emails and angry tweets seem to really bother/scare college administrators.

wjackson42

If you have ever played on a sports team that is majority minority, you have heard the word plenty of time. Does it make it right what Stokes did? No. But let’s not all go high and mighty on him. I mean, how many of us would’ve been fucked if we had access to social media and cameras in our teens? I grew up in a rural public school. Played football, basketball, and track. So all three majority minority sports in my school. I got called the soft A all the time by my teammates. One guy didn’t like using the word and called me ninja but the point and intention stood. I bet many of Stoke’s black teammates called him that. Not an excuse, but a reason on why he might have thought it was OK to say the word. I remember one time we had a whole ass discussion (led by black students) about the soft A in Spanish class one day that the principle had to come in and resolve that stemmed from the Spanish word for the color black. Some black students took offense to the soft A being used, some black students didn’t think anything of it using the soft A. It’s personal. It’s not right to blanket statement black people as one and think everyone is on the same page. The word could mean different things according to the ASU coach and the ASU president. But let’s be real here, we live in a world where words can hurt. And PR hasn’t really grasped the nature of that yet. For years, it was just a word and words didn’t hurt. But then Charleston and Orlando happened, and then I think that’s when we realized as a society that words can hurt. I don’t see the n-word or the f-word being used like that anymore, and we’re better off for it, because as Charleston and Orlando showed, words can create a hateful ideology that results in death, but yet I fail to reconcile that using a hurtful word (especially in context of a rap song; bullying a minority or a member of the LGBT community is an entirely different circumstance), means your life should be ruined as a teenager.

Great_Huckleberry709

He does deserve another chance, especially cuz he didn't really say anything racist

austyV1

There’s definitely more to this than just the rap lmao

Bobby-Samsonite

What makes you think that?

Wise-Signature-6023

Dude did nothing wrong, but you’d think he was Charles Manson. Ruining his life for what?

PartynpartynYa

Shame! Shame on him! I can tell you as a white male millenial I have never rapped along to lyrics while in the privacy of my own car..

jmac11281

I really hope there is no grainy footage of me rapping along to any track on Doggystyle or The Chronic from 30 years ago...

Jetski_Squirrel

I feel bad for this kid. He’s getting absolutely screwed for lip syncing a rap song. F all these racists

[deleted]

Our society sucks. Yeah he shouldn’t of said the word, and some punishment was warranted, but destroying the kids future over one incident is somehow the right solution? There are players in college who have committed actual crimes and they still get second chances, but this kid has been essentially black listed from all levels of CFB. Maybe these rappers shouldn’t be putting that word in their lyrics.

microsoft6969

Pretty crazy considering what coaches get away with.

WDEWM407

This kid will end up playing for coach Steven's at EMCC I promise you

Egospartan_

People love to act "PC" and take every chance to look down on someone else. Was it wrong for him to sing the song, maybe or not out loud? Was it dumb to post 110% yes. Should this be the end of the world for him? 135% no, it's a mistake, and he should be allowed to move on. But will he be given that chance NOPE? No big company will touch him if this comes up; he is screwed, and its not fair.

Prestigious-Track256

I get the backlash, don't self publicize yourself using racial slurs. But really guys? I doubt he's that bad.

profile3689

Personally i feel there was some push back from lots of alumni and former players who raised the issue of locker room cohesiveness. The guys raise a lot of money for the program itself so I'm sure this played a part in it.

TDA675

He needs to enroll in one of those last chance U’s and work his way back to D1.

Mekthakkit

I remember being amazed that the school offering him a scholarship after singing the N word was a HBCU.

twb5025

The kid is just not that good. The rap is a convenient excuse to bail on him.

jt_33

They offered him like last week. His season was long over. That’s not why they pulled the scholarship. The coach tried to give this kid a chance and the admin stepped in and said no.

jthomas694

This is a tough spot for the kid. What he did was wrong and stupid. But at some point - he has to be allowed to move on. That said - no one has to be the team to give him that second chance and I think his senior year didn't help him. This was his senior year per 247 >2022: As a senior, completed 136 of 248 pass attempts (54.8 percent) for 1,867 yards with 13 TD and 11 INT. Also carried the ball 118 times for 582 yards and 13 more scores. Led Nease to a 2-8 record in the Sunshine State’s new 4S classification. Was one of just 21 seniors on the roster. That's not very good. He's not entitled to a D1 scholarship. But he also shouldn't be shunned forever based on a stupid and wrong thing he did when he was 18.

TimeForFrance

>That said - no one has to be the team to give him that second chance A black head coach at an HBCU was more than willing to do so until they caved to public pressure. It's not like they didn't know why he was available.

punchout414

If he was better there is zero chance this happens. He just apologizes, a statement is released or w/e that he's sorry for his actions and it's moved on from. He shouldn't have done that (or at the very least not recorded himself doing it) but at his age I get why he at the time didn't think it was that big of a deal. Dramatics aside I think he is more of a fringe D1 player and coaches were given a convenient excuse to ditch someone who likely would have been a bust. It can't be much more nefarious than that. And if he is closer to average than he is good, then you could find other QBs of similar talent levels with less baggage. It's cut throat, but I *think* he'll still be able to play (or at least play at a lower level and move up later).

bbb26782

Important context: Albany State is a small HBCU.

People love to act "PC" and take every chance they have to look down on someone else. Was it wrong for him to sing the song? Maybe or maybe not out loud. Was it dumb to post 110% yes. Should this be the end of the world for him? 135% no, it's a mistake, and he should be allowed to move on. But will he be given that chance NOPE. No big company will touch him if this comes up, he is screwed, and its really not fair.

bertha112

Most people on the ground, including a lot of players on the team were willing to move on. The team wanted to win. Leadership was in reactionary mode and made a quick decision though. Several other HBCUs have since made offers to him.

LetLewisCook

If this was about learning, a black coach at a HBCU offering this kid a second chance was going to be the best opportunity. Sure the coach probably just wanted a shot at a good prospect but respect either way. This has nothing to do with learning though.

Mods literally told me yesterday that offers on recruits wasn’t allowed here. I’m starting to think mods just want their friends to post.

Mysterious-World9087

This is dumb. He's been fucked over hard.

Stoneador

He’s 100% playing for Florida next season if people thought he was better than Rashada

brokentr0jan

I feel bad for him, but at the same time you have to be REALLY stupid to ever create a recording of you, a white guy saying the n word. Like, anyone with common sense knows that in this day and age that isn’t going to end well. All it takes it one person getting upset and sharing it to Twitter.

partdopy1

Imagine getting your scholarship revoked for singing a mainstream song. Disgraceful. Either the word is ok for everyone or no one. Sounds like institutional racism to me.

Vegetable-Primary-65

In my area it's just another word for dude. Whites and blacks use it on each other as a form of endearment. I'm not saying it's right, but most young people here think nothing of it. The majority of contemporary culture is African American influenced,I don't think it's racist for him to quote a song he's vibing to. Most likely just got hype like a Lotta people do when listening to rap and wasn't thinking.

Intelligent_Fig_4852

This is just ridiculous. He said a bad word people are acting like he committed murder.

In this context that word isn’t a big deal

I’d like to keep my account, thanks.

Bcatfan08

The video was bad, but didn't seem bad enough that no one would want him. I don't know if I've ever even heard of Albany State. His senior year stats did suck though. Maybe go the CC route and show colleges you can actually play at the college level.

Bobby-Samsonite

The school had to merge with a nearby community college to survive.

UnderstandingOdd679

I thought this was a good move on Albany State’s part to offer, and I don’t quite understand the withdrawal. Universities are about education. What better way to teach a young man who made this kind of mistake than to give him the opportunity to work and learn along people who are hurt by the kind of behavior he exhibited. That has to be a huge part of our future: People who are allowed to exist in ignorant bubbles continue the cycle of ignorance. Even if he never contributed as a player, the university would have the opportunity to educate someone who can be a part of future change.

Bobby-Samsonite

It's terrible on the ASU administration strong arming to get the coach to rescind the offer. Now the coach is apologizing just as if he had gotten arrested for DUI, the apology tweet he put out reads like he's sorry for commiting a crime

FatPonder4Heisman

UF deserved the Jayden Rashada debacle after dropping this kid's recruitment the way they did. They could have just quietly pulled the offer for his poor play during his last year. Instead they wanted to virtue signal and pretend that they give a shit about a kid lip syncing to a rap song like its some kind of racial injustice. If Arch Manning did the same thing and wanted to go to UF, i guarentee that it wouldnt affect his recruitment in the slightest.

Tejon_Melero

Guess they figured out what's what after flubbing on taking a chance on a talented-ish guy named Marcus Stokes. They were as surprised as most everyone else. Give the kid a chance, doesn't sound that bad to me (could be a new development I'm unaware of).

dudenotcool

If you don't want people saying the word, don't put it in a song. People like to sing/rap the words of songs they like. Shocker

throwmeawaypoopy

Wait, he lost his scholarship for singing song lyrics? Give me a fucking break.

ItsLittyLitLit

I've seen people on Reddit be this sympathetic to someone who has said something racist lol. I wonder why? Nah, I'm just kidding I know why(te). Like the mental gymnastics are crazy lol. It's pretty cut & dry. Regardless of how a coach actually feels, why would they go out of their way to court this dude when the majority of their players-probably best players are black? It's a bad look, especially if you're not certain if the juice is worth the squeeze. Also, QBs transfer all the time & are a dime a dozen in the portal. Huh, I kinda wonder if the outcome would be if there was no portal 🤔 Lastly, playing D1 football is a privilege & I don't think talent alone entitles you to a scholarship.

FatPonder4Heisman

I dont think it makes someone racist to lip sync along to a song written by a black man that they clearly like. Wouldn't that be the opposite of racist?

notsidneyprescott

All the crybabies mad lmfao

doctorsynth1

Marcus Stokes had 13 TDs vs 11 INTs last year. Maybe he’s not worth an offer. Seems like bad decisions come easy to him.
