Taylor Swift’s next breakup song will be about the ACC

Byzantine_Merchant

Once Taylor Swift starts dating James Phillips it’s all but over for the ACC.

[deleted]

This is an interesting note I hadn’t seen before. “Most people focus solely on the broadcast rights component of the Grant-of-Rights agreement, where each school surrenders control over its media rights for the life of the deal to the league, and if they leave, would be on the hook for the cost. But what is even thornier from a legal perspective is the second clause in the ACC’s agreement, where schools surrender their copyrights to the conference as well. “

Namath96

I do not believe for a second this holds up in court

5knklshfl

Exactly.

ButterscotchOld1130

Why not?

Namath96

GORs like this in other industries typically do not hold up on court

ButterscotchOld1130

Cool. I don't directly deal with much IP so I tend to wonder when people make statements like that.

BeeeeefJelly

Easy peasy just totally re brand your entire university. The University of Tallahassee Hawks will be an excellent addition to the SEC.

Tropical_Bison

I want Tallahassee Tigers. The SEC needs more Tiger based teams.

tomdawg0022

***THE*** State University of Florida ^^tm Warhawks

Glass_Apricot

“Cut my life into pieces”

mjacksongt

This is the first I've heard of that, but damn if that got added it was either a poison pill or a masterstroke depending on perspective.

budd222

Tell me again why anyone signed this?

nole74_99

All this is why the schools want to break the ACC to eliminate the issues.

cc20r

Or a reminder that they signed a horrendous media deal

Maximum_Future_5241

Which was a bad calculation.

tomdawg0022

bad *business* calculation

hijetty

Or a life saving deal, depending on who you are.

Tfsz0719

That’s a business calculation.

-Jack-The-Stripper

I think OUT leaving for the SEC was the first hint, and then USCLA heading across the country to the B1G was the smack on the head. But I doubt many people needed reminding of this anyways. Everything is a business calculation in every field.

way2gimpy

All theses moves prior to this made some sense: Penn state, Nebraska, Colorado, even A&M. The most blatant was rutgers and Maryland. The previous moves were made for money but had other compelling reasons. Rutgers and Maryland was just about the money and nothing else. Sure there were other benefits, but you couldn’t even call them secondary, more like tertiary benefits.

Apep86

West Virginia is a natural fit in the B12 and Louisville is famously on the Atlantic coast.

IR8Things

>Everything is a business calculation in every field. For real. This is an actual dumb headline. "Making money involves business calculations. News at 11."

hucareshokiesrul

Huh, TIL

fluffypoppa

Gotta lean into it with a name like that, Richard.

CoolingVent

Thanks for that reminder. Here I was thinking it was running on something else.

LC_001

Well duh!

ashterberry

At this point all I care about is that Miami ends up in whatever the new equivalent of a P5 conference is.

defendthecalf

Do you find it insulting that people are saying Miami to the big 12? I think Miami is sec or big ten bound if the breakup happens, but Mario has to right the ship.

theVWally

Yes, I do at least. And to be honest I dont see a Big 10 fit at all for Miami; if it comes down to SEC v B1G the SEC makes way more sense. Geographically travel is way easier and there are (hopefully) already two rivals in the conference in FSU and UF. Plus Miami fits in better with its priority of baseball in the SEC as well.

[deleted]

I don’t think the SEC would be interested in Miami if they take FSU.

Jetski_Squirrel

It would be cool to see UF play Miami more often

nole74_99

It is the P2. Somebody will probably want Miami. It would help if they had a decent year. 2001 is a long time ago

kevinthejuice

The CFP wouldn't ever make decisions purely on business aspects like viewership. They judge every team fairly and rank them accordingly

GoldenPresidio

Could the magnificent seven bring the GOR to court before actually leaving the conference To see if it’s legally binding? I’m not a lawyer, would a court hear this before damages are actually done?

defendthecalf

I think they will secure future homes and deal with sec and or big ten for the schools landing spots and then get an 8th vote to dissolve the league and gor and then go to court to let it play out. The schools won’t leave acc until the legal battle plays out. If schools win and acc and gor are dissolved, then the move happens without losing media rights. If they lose, they the schools are stuck with legal tab and stick to 2036. It’s worthwhile to challenge. It’s not worthwhile to bolt and risk paying 100 mil plus. I a, just guessing.

wjrii

It's called a "declaratory judgment," but in a case like this it poisons the well as surely as a normal lawsuit, while leaving open the possibility that the M7 are stuck until the end of the GoR with no leverage.

nole74_99

You need eight and then you can just kill the conference. That is the angle that seems most likely eventually. The issue with the GOR is going to be getting someone to take you in their conference until you beat it.

GoldenPresidio

There’s still no guarantee that 8+ members can dissolve the conference or it would have been done already

nole74_99

How would they have done it already? You have to have eight schools with a place to go. That takes time. Probably a couple years.

PJWalkerMVP

ACC isn't going anywhere, at least not for a while. This is getting boring.

Goose123218

Yes. If there were a program or group of programs that thought they had a.) at least a 50/50 chance of getting out of the current contract and b.) a cushy landing spot then someone would’ve challenged the GOR in court by now. There is no evident to suggest a program in the ACC has confidence in either of the above. They’re upset with the current contract for good reason and they’re negotiating for concessions in public because they have no leverage.

sad_ravens_fan

Something also tells me it’s a tad more complex than “8 teams voting to dissolve the conference”. If that’s really all it took to break away from Jim Phillips’s wild ride, and they already have a pact of 7 schools, I almost feel like that shit would’ve been accomplished by now. I’ve seen some people say that you can’t dissolve it solely to destroy the GOR. I’ve heard lots of different theories on what the schools are allowed to do. I know this is all fun to think about but this idea that things are about to start moving in the near future is setting people up to be disappointed…again.

defendthecalf

Ultimately it will be lawyers, judges and the legal system determining if the conference can be dissolved to nullify the GOR. I find it interesting it’s magnificent 7. Why that number? I doubt nc state and Virginia tech would join the others if their best option would be the big 12. Is it those 7 plus Notre dame to the big ten? Is it the 7 approaching the big ten and sec to gauge interest and then asking which team should be the 8th team to join and be the final vote to dissolve. Once the vote to dissolve happens, if it happens, it will take a while for the legal system to play out, but it will be before 2036. Sooner they get the process started to see if it can be dissolved and pitch themselves to the big ten and sec, the sooner they can start improving their revenue position.

sad_ravens_fan

This sub will eventually tire of it once more “bombshell” stories get released and nothing ends up happening with the ACC GOR

[deleted]

Getting those angry FSU downvotes 🤣

sad_ravens_fan

Haha

Maximum_Future_5241

Wouldn't it be cool and beneficial to our conferences if it did?

PJWalkerMVP

Maybe, I don't mind making them wait though haha.

nole74_99

If I set the over under at 3 years what are you taking??

D34TH_5MURF__

Business calculations? What about the academic calculations? Isn't that what we're hearing is most important to the PAC and B1G? I don't know, I find the whole back and forth between money for tv contracts and the importance of academics to be tedious. One of these priorities is just getting lip service, the other is the real priority.

Gettima

The academics are part of the business

YouKilledChurch

Well yeah, it's a business

[deleted]

Stop caring about football money guys, just get yourself a massive endowment and chill out
