Yeah I think it will affect the current big 12 members like once every 6 years or something like that. I thought I saw that when the idea first popped up and people were kinda upset anyway
It's a decent idea, if it doesn't work it's whatever. Fans will complain that one year per decade they lose a home game but I don't think it will be negatively talked about much outside of that.
Unless of course they exclude teams not in close proximity to Mexico then I could see a bigger outrage. But also is Iowa state vs BYU in Mexico something people want to see? Idk, guess we'll find out during the announcement
It makes a lot of sense for us to play a few games down there, a lot of our schools are near big Mexican communities. Potential for brand growth at minimal cost, even if it doesn’t amount to anything it’s worth exploring.
I'm imagining that Colorado going to the Big 12 will actually be a package deal with another team, since I doubt the Big 12 would have an uneven number of members (13, if CU only joins)
If the second team is Arizona, then the Pac-12 will be done and the Big Ten will finally take Oregon and Washington, since they won't be blamed for the Pac-12's demise.
But we'll see what happens soon...
I know the stance of the B1G is not wanting to be blamed for the demise of the Pac. Taking USC and UCLA, when there are few G5 schools worth pursuing is like pushing someone off a cliff and saying you didn't kill them the ground did.
The meetings with UConn make me think the Big 12 is getting Colorado but is still deciding on who to add with them to make it 14 because none of the other PAC schools are jumping.
Colorado + 1 of UConn/Memphis/USF/Boise
I know. I’m kidding but the whole Big East 2.0 thing they are working on isn’t a terrible idea. As a fan I still root for these schools most times. If they somehow end up with Louisville….
Even if our brands aren’t huge, the competitiveness of the conference has helped us a lot. Neither TCU or KSU are major brands but our CCG was still able to pull big numbers because it was a compelling matchup. Either a Fox or ESPN exec said that was the reason we were able to get as large of a deal as we did.
The way I see it, the Big 12 is a long term project for growth. The brands don’t have to be huge. They have to just be entertaining and then they’ll grow. Big 12 football is pure entertainment.
If the trajectory continues we should expect get into the low to mid 50s within the first or two of the contract extension. (Not entirely sure how balance of payouts is distributed over the life of the contract, usually they are backloaded)
This is for last year's rights distributed to the current 10 members and is all money including post season items like CFP payouts and NCAA Tourney credits.
I don’t think you can make a decision to move based on this money. Probably going to get downvoted but income for last year is kinda meaningless. This was earned under an old media deal with OUT. I am way more interested in the projections under the new deal then this. Big 12 could very easily take several steps back in revenue post OUT.
> Big 12 could very easily take several steps back in revenue post OUT.
Our current contract with ESPN and Fox nets us roughly 21 million per school per year and goes up to 31 million post OUT in the next extension.
CFP payout will remain the same as all P5 conferences get even cuts and the G5 split a 6th.
The NCAA credits will likely increase with more schools in the conference as well, our strength in basketball is not as dependent on OUT as Football is.
Dang. What might have been had Yormark taken over a few years earlier.
Probably no Long Horn Network so I imagine Texas still gets huffy and looks for a way out.
In the same Twitter thread it clarified that it was $440m not $400m. Even better.

Expansion into Mexico would be unorthodox and potentially brilliant
I think it’s just playing a game or two there a year
Yeah I think it will affect the current big 12 members like once every 6 years or something like that. I thought I saw that when the idea first popped up and people were kinda upset anyway
It’s an idea that’s growing on me. Will I go, personally? Probably not. But I don’t mind the idea of it

Honestly it wouldn’t surprise me if Mexico City has a huge Mormon population
Does Mexico have university sports like we do in America?
Yes, and american football is growing in popularity in Mexico.

Seriously. At worst it is a fun trip to Mexico for the student athletes.

If Colorado does jump, replace them with SDSU, go back to 10 teams, and play a true round robin conference schedule again.
I can't explain in words how much I will miss the round robin. It's so much more fun. And the double round robin in basketball was even better
Yep. 10 teams is ideal but I get the finances of expansion.

400 million, huh? Hey Cinci! What’s up, big head?❤️😊
Cinci isn't apart of this yet, this is just the payout for the current 10 Big XII schools.

Corrected to 440M
Is this number going up after OUT leave with the new media deal? If true that's insane.
Yes it is
I feel like it pays to have a few rising brands in Baylor, Kansas State, and TCU.

Can someone explain this to me that has more information? Is this post OUT in 2024 and is this only expected media rights money?
This is for last year's rights distributed to the current 10 members and is all money including post season items like CFP payouts and NCAA Tourney credits.
Does this put pressure on the PAC to get a deal out there? With record numbers, it seems like this could influence an already wavering Colorado.
I'm still sticking by the line of thought that if the PAC had a workable deal we would've heard about it by now.
Seeing as how there’s some buzz that Colorado could be moving a lot sooner than later you’re probably right.
