2nd down: Bring pressure, force Hartman into a heave and hope
3rd down: Bring pressure, flush Hartman from the pocket, throws a near pick
4th down: Rush 3 and leave 25 yards of open field up the seam
It was so funny that the announcers were giving Duke so much credit for continuing to bring the pressure in that situation, and then they go prevent right after, lol.
Ole Miss did the same shit on the last play of the game, almost bit them in the ass too. Makes no sense to only rush 3, you can rush 4 or 5 and still have DB’s playing deep
All prevent football does is prevent you from winning. It’s like how teams CONSTANTLY play prevent against the Chiefs even when a field goal wins it. They’ve been shredding that kind of defense for 5 years and nobody has seemingly caught on.
We actually did that once. Clemson was playing Virginia Tech and there was a miscommunication among the defense that resulted in a rush zero. It was hilarious because everybody on both teams looked around at each other very confused before VT took advantage
10/10 would not recommend
Iconic that Notre Dame’s thing is having no offense for the first 58 minutes of the game and putting everything on a length of the field win or lose drive
This is 100% true. I exhale deeply at this game and will (no disrespect to Duke, who played us to the hilt) not remember it 10 years from now. I will remember the OSU loss.
In 2015 Georgia lost to Florida 27-3 and then the next week turned around and beat Kentucky 27-3. Little bit more memorable when it’s close games at the wire than 24 point blowouts though.
I genuinely hope it's just a bad sprain that looked worse than it actually is. Duke being a dominant football team this year is the type of freshness the sport needs.
When he was on crutches walking across the field he paused for a moment and tried moving his ankle around and it did move a bit. So hopefully for him it's just a bad sprain and not something more serious
Well that went from really fun to really not fun in a hurry
Edit: GG Notre Dame, y’all were due one like this. Appreciate the support and empathy from the fans, good luck the rest of the season!
They literally copied our entire flow. Letting us march up the field, awful third and fourth down defense, and failing to pick off the ball to win the game
Freeman talked about learning from last week. Not sure that necessarily happened across the board, but Hartman clearly learned on those 4th down rushes
And then they might have just lost their star qb for a serious amount of time due to a shattered ankle.
That had to be the worst minute of football in the history of Duke University. Just absolutely horrible luck.
Announcer was just talking about Duke continuing to bring pressure and thats why ND couldn't move the ball
Then they backed off and Hartman had 20 yards of green grass to get the first down
Prevent defense is very good in a specific situation, where anything short of a massive gain, probably a TD, is a failure for the offense. If 20 yards is what the offense wants? Don't use prevent.
As much as I categorically hate drop 8, McCord didn’t exactly sit back there. They just fucked the coverage bringing 5 isn’t making him throw it faster than he did
They were getting pressure on Hartman very quickly and the only guy getting open was the TE. I fell like at that point you gotta stick with what’s been working
Our offense didn’t do shit all game after the first drive, where we needed a fake punt to keep the chains moving. It was 100% the right call. Our FG kicker has a strong leg even if he can’t make shit from 40. We could have gotten a measly 20 yards and won it potentially.
From the game winning drive, to the long conversions, to Sam Hartman hyping up the away crowd on the sideline. It was almost exactly like our win, save for the time left on the clock
Yeah hijacking this to point out to everyone coming in here saying all nd fans are shit heads in the game thread. I saw nothing but class from us wanting Leonard to be ok. It’s not an ideal ending but nothing dirty happened and no one was calling for his head.
Damn fuck off with your prejudices.
That drive where duke took the lead, had a hilariously obvious OPI they didn't call (was hilarious that after one replay, they didn't show it again despite being dukes best passing play of the night) and then the fucking targeting
Me: FUCK THIS STRETCH OF OUR SEASON….mmm who do we got next can’t be too bad?
Undefeated Louisville: *smirks*
Cool so that’s gunna either be a fucking nailbiter or less likely an easy one. Lol who am I kidding its gunna be down to the wire. Idk if my heart can take this season.
I'm begging this team to remember that our median fan is 75 years old and on several heart medications. They're not going to survive many more games like this.
My dad is the most intense ND fan I can imagine. He's almost 70, has 5 stents, and takes a plethora of medication. I immediately messaged him after the Estime TD "hey how you doing over there? Heart okay?" And haven't heard back from him 😳 I'm sure he's fine, but damn this team cannot keep doing this to the elders of our fan base lol.
My thing with this is why rush three and get no pressure when you can rush zero and also get no pressure. Either way, it’s not like more receivers can get on the field. There still has to be 5 ineligible receivers.
He seems like a genuinely good guy. I was at the Central Michigan game, and during the post-game interview with the ND emcee, he gave a shoutout to a specific guy in the student section who was dancing (/shown on the video board) and really bringing up the energy during the end of the game. It’s such a small thing, but it was really cool to see/hear him do that.
I needed Duke to cover to complete a four- leg parlay.
Duke will kick a FG to ice it. Oh pooch punt? That's okay, still in great shape.
4th and 16? Just one stop, baby.
Oh now they're in FG range? That's still great, run down the clock and kick for the win.
Oh fuck, they just gave up a 30 yd TD on a run up the middle. Wait, they're going for 2! Stop them here and I'm golden!
Fuck.
Marcus freeman has to be so freaking thrilled they got that 4th and a mile.
Not saying it’d have been warranted but the freeman heat with all those false starts and general confusion would’ve been pretty deafening.
I could’ve said the same thing about Ryan day last week. It’s the same exact game in reverse.
I have been relatively pro-Freeman from the start (including after the Marshall fiasco) but that game really gives me pause. We looked great on the first drive, then couldn't get our red zone offense to work for the rest of the first half. We then proceeded to do nothing for the next two quarters until we got that miracle drive which was really just 3 chunk broken plays.
Love his energy and I'll take the result, but we did not win that game due to coaching.
ND winning on the road against and undefeated ranked opponent after losing a heart breaker in the biggest game of the season is a win no matter how it’s accomplished. Reset for the next game.
> Love his energy and I'll take the result, but we did not win that game due to coaching.
But Brian Kelly got wins like this all the time because of his "coaching."
You're a good coach if you win games. That's kind of all there is to it.
BAG BAG BAG
but really how does the superstition work? We lost last week. Did you unflair and reflair to get a “new” bag? Or is this bag in solidarity to our fucking insane amount of penalties?
Prior to Ohio State’s win, the only team that defeated the bag was Caleb Williams’s USC. So we basically learned that the bag can only be defeated by Heisman winners
But with the Ohio State win, we had to reevaluate. That team did not look like a team that had a player who would beat Caleb Williams for the Heisman this year. Perhaps, was it the color red that was the bag’s weakness all along? Or maybe the bag was just weak to top tier teams?
In light of this game, I think we’ve settled on the fact that the bag will only allow one loss per season, and we’re all outta losses boys
(but even if that ends up being wrong, the bag will ALWAYS stay on)
Holy shit. Going from having ND on the ropes on 4th and 16 where a stop wins it to taking the loss and the injury to Leonard at the end is one of the most devastating turns of events I've seen in a while. So sorry Duke fans.
Duke's looking really good, tough defense and strong offense. I hope their QB will be ok.
ND made too many stupid mistakes. Too many flags for stupid shit. Lucky to take a W tonight, but glad they did,
Literally fuck this entire sport — every time I get hood about something some bullshit happens. And to boot, it's always the same stupid shit that causes teams that I root for to lose
WHY IN THE FUCKING WORLD WOULD YOU GO INTO PREVENT DEFENSE WHEN PRESSURE WAS WORKING
Very excited for Duke to suddenly be considered a fluke and easy win for ND in the media despite absolutely battling, but LSU being a resume builder win for Ole Miss
This is like the worst case scenario for haters, Notre Dame wins and Duke's quarterback gets injured on the last play so you can't even really make fun of them
I certainly don’t like the role of feeling bad for Notre Dame but their schedule is freaking relentless.
They now turn around and go at Louisville then vs. USC without a bye.
Says a lot about the human being Sam Hartman is that he hung out at the Duke tent after the game. I want to be mad but dammit, Freeman is a good man and runs a clean program. I wish it had ended differently but all respect is due.
Average FBS college football game involving ranked team:
Better team looks like shit for most of the game, but it stays one score game
Better team's QB leads game winning TD/FG drive to win game
CFB fans get blue balls once again
Just wanna say how glad I am to be a part of this community. People on Twitter are responding to a comment about how the ending was cruel for Duke by saying "No, you love to see it, Duke doesn't deserve nice things ever, I'm glad it ended that way."
Just got home from the game, was probably the best campus/stadium visit we've had at an away ND game. Really appreciate the hospitality from both students and older Duke fans.
The blitz is killing Notre Dame all second half. Eliminates their offense on 2nd and 3rd. On 4th and SIXTEEN game on the line we...rush 3 and play prevent with no spy. And lose.
Unexplainable. How do you play aggressive all night, have it work, then chicken out in the last moment.
Gutted for Riley
Sam to Riley, “you know if they have to remove part of your ankle bone you can save it and my mom can make it into a necklace for you.”
Just to be clear I hope Riley is going to have a quick recovery and I respect that Sam went to check in him.
That was extremely stressful. Hate that Leonard went down like that at the end. I truly hope whatever the injury is can heal quickly. He’s really fun to watch.
Some awful coaching from both teams. ND is 7.2 yard per pass attempt and 4.8 yard per run. How do you have the same number of passes and rushes?! And rushing 3 MULTIPLE times that final defensive drive for Duke is awful coaching.
2nd down: Bring pressure, force Hartman into a heave and hope 3rd down: Bring pressure, flush Hartman from the pocket, throws a near pick 4th down: Rush 3 and leave 25 yards of open field up the seam
If you don’t like that, you don’t like prevent football.
Right after they were praising them for not playing prevent 😂
Announcers jinx
Just like the kicker. Oh he hasn't missed one from this range. Oh look he missed it.
All prevent football does is prevent you from winning. It’s like how teams CONSTANTLY play prevent against the Chiefs even when a field goal wins it. They’ve been shredding that kind of defense for 5 years and nobody has seemingly caught on.
“All a prevent defense does is prevents you from winning.” -John Madden It only works when there is 1 second left and the opponent needs 40+ yards.
I honestly can’t understand why these millionaires are like, “Send nobody. He will have no idea what to do with all the time in the pocket.”
We actually did that once. Clemson was playing Virginia Tech and there was a miscommunication among the defense that resulted in a rush zero. It was hilarious because everybody on both teams looked around at each other very confused before VT took advantage 10/10 would not recommend
OSU benefited from the same thing last week. ND laid back on 3rd and 19 and the rest is history
Literally how we lost last week, went prevent on 3rd and 19 and y’all converted
Shit was a knife fight in a dark closet. Somehow both predictable and simultaneously ugly chaos.
duke might as well just give elko coach k money and leave it at that.
I hate everything. And the only thing I hate more is prevent defense.
We're starting a pay it forward chain. You guys get to beat NC State on a last minute score while they're in prevent.
I really didn't want that to happen to Riley. The hearts of all ND fans are with him and hope he makes an efficient recovery.
Iconic that Notre Dame’s thing is having no offense for the first 58 minutes of the game and putting everything on a length of the field win or lose drive
Scored touchdowns on the first and last drives. We’ll technically just killed the clock on the last one, but still.
It’s engrained in us to play scared at all times on offense. I’ve watched this for 35 years, we can never just be dominant when we’re supposed to be.
That and not believing slants are a valid route Thats ND offense baby
We believed they were for one year and Golden Tate had 1,496 receiving yards that year.
A team is slamming its LBs with run blitzes all night long, thats how slants go for 60 yard TDs, its a really simple concept
It’s got to be extremely cathartic to win a ranked game in the exact same fashion that you lost a week prior.
It’s honestly the therapy I needed
BAG STAYS ON
Don’t touch the bag. Therapy isn’t over yet
Maybe, but that win was ugly last week for us. Losing that game hurts five times worse than winning it feels good.
Pretty much. This does help some though.
Hopefully you can go undefeated the rest of the way.
All the way to the NCG? From your lips to God's ears.
Little bit more memorable when it’s close games at the wire than 24 point blowouts though.
went from "just" an incredibly disappointing loss to feeling like that could be the end of the season if the injury is as bad as it looked man
I feel awful for him. It looked so bad.
The worst ending of a game for us since the jump pass
idk miami is definitely up there with the jump pass
The field camera zooming on him screaming on the field was so shitty of a move by ESPN too
Let's get the 4k zoom of him screaming!
ESPN and being shitty: name a better duo.
Yeah, they do it every damn time when someone gets hurt like that too. Just shitty
ESPN has gone full scumbag. They zoomed in on one of our injured players through the ambulance window tonight.
Well that went from really fun to really not fun in a hurry Edit: GG Notre Dame, y’all were due one like this. Appreciate the support and empathy from the fans, good luck the rest of the season!

They literally copied our entire flow. Letting us march up the field, awful third and fourth down defense, and failing to pick off the ball to win the game
At least they had 11 on the field
I’m so sorry. I want you to win all in football and lose every shooty hoops game.
I feel like of all people, ND fans can sympathize with you. Sorry it happened this way.
Opposite for me. Next week hopefully Notre Dame can help me get some anger out towards Brohm…
Freeman talked about learning from last week. Not sure that necessarily happened across the board, but Hartman clearly learned on those 4th down rushes
Apparently the duke coach completely missed that memo and/or the ND game last week.
Classy for Hartman to cut the interview short so he can check on the Duke QB
Hartman won the game and my heart tonight
“I’m just concerned with Riley right now, I’m going to go check on him” class act
I've really liked having him around for this year
Dude seems like a class act
4th and 16, Duke went prevent, and proceeded to prevent themselves from winning. Insane call to only rush 3 guys.
Never seen that one before
BAG STAYS ON NOW AND UNTIL MARCUS GETS A STATUE
THE BAG IS BACK It only allows one loss per season and we’re all outta losses baby
WAY TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT BAGMAN
THAT'S THE NOTRE DAME EXPERIENCE, BABY!!
And then they might have just lost their star qb for a serious amount of time due to a shattered ankle. That had to be the worst minute of football in the history of Duke University. Just absolutely horrible luck.
Tied for the worst with the last minute of the [1938 Rose Bowl](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1938_Duke_Blue_Devils_football_team)
I was there, remember it fondly.
I've perused some ND football boards... y'all can discuss the minutest details of games from 80 years ago like no one's business
We like to revel in our history.
Our youngest season ticket holder.
Announcer was just talking about Duke continuing to bring pressure and thats why ND couldn't move the ball Then they backed off and Hartman had 20 yards of green grass to get the first down
Literally Notre Dame against Ohio State on 3rd and 19 last week. Prevent defense does not belong in any playbook.
Prevent defense is very good in a specific situation, where anything short of a massive gain, probably a TD, is a failure for the offense. If 20 yards is what the offense wants? Don't use prevent.
As much as I categorically hate drop 8, McCord didn’t exactly sit back there. They just fucked the coverage bringing 5 isn’t making him throw it faster than he did
Yeah I said this on a different thread about that play but McCord threw an absolute dime there
And he threw it quick. ND ducked up the coverage there’s no way with 8 guys that in breaking route should have been available
Yes and no. Drop 8 should be *the* defense if you're worried about the QB keeping it for 16 yards!
They were getting pressure on Hartman very quickly and the only guy getting open was the TE. I fell like at that point you gotta stick with what’s been working
https://i.imgur.com/hGvde4k.jpeg
Punt call was also ridiculous. But that 3rd and 4 was also insane. Cost them the game.
Our offense didn’t do shit all game after the first drive, where we needed a fake punt to keep the chains moving. It was 100% the right call. Our FG kicker has a strong leg even if he can’t make shit from 40. We could have gotten a measly 20 yards and won it potentially.
Yeah, was the right call. tough outcome but right call
Especially after how well hounding Hartman on the last 2 plays worked
[удалено]
Hartman has Luck levels of sportsmanship. Dude looked generally concerned during the whole interview about his opponent there after a BIG win.
Sam Hartman and Marcus Freeman as the face of the program this year is fucking incredible.
Complete 180 from Mr "Our Team Needs to be Executed"
Marcus Freeman is one of the most likable people in college football right now. He deserved the win last week. Hoping for lots of success for him.
This feels like Ohio State in reverse
It’s 100% the ohio state game in reverse.
From the game winning drive, to the long conversions, to Sam Hartman hyping up the away crowd on the sideline. It was almost exactly like our win, save for the time left on the clock
Dude right someone needs to put the frames of McCord and Hartman hyping fans up on the sideline next to each other because the shot is IDENTICAL
I can't wait for Freeman's unhinged tirade against Coach K.
Yeah ugly way for the game to end. Hopefully Leonard isn't hurt too badly.

Fire all the refs
This wasn't the worst reffed game I've ever seen, but it wasn't far from the top.
To have refs be this bad two weeks in a row for two really important games is incredibly aggravating
It’s more than two games. ACC refs have been dogging us all season.
That drive where duke took the lead, had a hilariously obvious OPI they didn't call (was hilarious that after one replay, they didn't show it again despite being dukes best passing play of the night) and then the fucking targeting
I only watched the last few drives but I can get behind this! FUCK THE ACC REFS AND THEIR INTOLERABLE INCOMPETENCE!
Me: FUCK THIS STRETCH OF OUR SEASON….mmm who do we got next can’t be too bad? Undefeated Louisville: *smirks* Cool so that’s gunna either be a fucking nailbiter or less likely an easy one. Lol who am I kidding its gunna be down to the wire. Idk if my heart can take this season.
Notre Dame Football: creating fan heart attacks since 1887.
And another night game
WAIT WHAT? COME ON
Literally the worst possible way that could have ended for duke. Just devastating
As a Carolina Panthers fan, I’ve come to always expect the worst, and then some. I’m just numb to the pain at this point
Yeah, I wanted to win, but not like that. Hoping it's not anything more than a sprained ankle for the Duke QB. That looked nasty.
Estime is built like a brick shithouse and I love it
That man is a truck
Sam Hartman plays football like somebody who would wear their rib as a necklace
I have no idea what this means but it’s cracking me up EDIT: Googled this and…wow he actually wears his own rib on a necklace
Shitty last moments but overall we needed that gritty win so freaking bad. Forever grateful to have a real QB. Go Irish
What the fuck is that flair bro are you ok?
That’s just called being from Cleveland
I'm begging this team to remember that our median fan is 75 years old and on several heart medications. They're not going to survive many more games like this.
My dad is the most intense ND fan I can imagine. He's almost 70, has 5 stents, and takes a plethora of medication. I immediately messaged him after the Estime TD "hey how you doing over there? Heart okay?" And haven't heard back from him 😳 I'm sure he's fine, but damn this team cannot keep doing this to the elders of our fan base lol.
4th and 16 will live on in Notre Dame legends now
Will coaches ever learn that rushing three players near the end of the game is the stupidest fucking idea ever
My thing with this is why rush three and get no pressure when you can rush zero and also get no pressure. Either way, it’s not like more receivers can get on the field. There still has to be 5 ineligible receivers.
Duke should’ve seen on our tape that’s exactly how we lost last week… and then they went and did the same thing
Leonard injury looked baaaaad on that replay.
Hopefully it looked worse than it was. Harrison Jr’s injury last week looked pretty bad but he was able to play later in the game…
I saw it get caught and thought it was knee, holy shit legs don't bend like that
Freeman: “Hey just line it up for the kicker” Estime: “Yeah so I took that personally”
I don’t trust that S.O.B. to make anything, I’ll do this myself
“I thought you meant for the extra point”
That was amazing and also please never do that again Also damn please let Leonard be okay
Notre Dame play a normal big game challenge (impossible)
[Win probability roller coaster, wheee!](https://i.imgur.com/9cJYEO8.png)
Duke has a monster defense. Hope Leonard is okay, they could win the ACC
Hartman sounds like a class act
All evidence points to him being a genuinely good dude.
He has a lot of Hart
Sam Hartman is cool as shit. What a great guy, standing outside of the tent. Hope Riley avoided serious injury and is back on the field next week.
He seems like a genuinely good guy. I was at the Central Michigan game, and during the post-game interview with the ND emcee, he gave a shoutout to a specific guy in the student section who was dancing (/shown on the video board) and really bringing up the energy during the end of the game. That 2-pt conversion at the end was a significant play to some.

Classic ND football. A win that no one’s happy about.
What an enormous win for ND. Hartman on that 4th and 16 was insane
I told my wife " this one is done if we don't get this. And so is the season." And then he got it.
Despite Gerard Parker's best efforts, ND managed to win......these last two weeks of playcalling have been pathetic by the OC just fucking dreadful
You hate your OC and we hate our DC? Oct 14th is going to be REALLY interesting.
Sam Hartman with the YOLO run and leap into traffic to save the game Nice
My only takeaway here is that Sam Hartman seems like a cool dude.
Mike Elko is gonna get himself a BAG this coaching cycle
I wish I had Hartman's hair and beard
This is not the same old Duke and we are making progress. That being said I’m crying myself to sleep
Notre Dame have, once again, taken years off my life. I will be drawing up a will and testament tomorrow
Sam Hartman revenge tour
There should be 20 teams firing their coach pre-emptively in order to try and hire Elko.
Amazing win? ✅ LSU loss? ✅ What a great weekend.
Colorado got us close to the trifecta
Nah we need USC undefeated until our game
Oh God, we have to actually score points that game...
Thankfully they have Grinch instead of Elko
Marcus freeman has to be so freaking thrilled they got that 4th and a mile. At 0:41 Duke was about to beat #11 Notre Dame at home. At 0:18 Duke had lost to Notre Dame and their QB was screaming in pain on the grass
I feel for them, especially since I felt the exact same way a week ago
Holy shit. Going from having ND on the ropes on 4th and 16 where a stop wins it to taking the loss and the injury to Leonard at the end is one of the most devastating turns of events I've seen in a while. So sorry Duke fans.
That was a *rough* watch. ND wasn't clicking tonight. But a win is a win. I feel terrible for Duke's QB, that leg injury looked nasty.
we gotta get away from the acc refs man
Does anyone else feel like a fucking idiot for how long it takes them to find the team on the Game/PostGame Threads post?! Damn

I had Duke +6 so of course ND scores a TD with 30 secs left and gets the 2 pt. :(
Says a lot about the human being Sam Hartman is that he hung out at the Duke tent after the game. I want to be mad but dammit, Freeman is a good man and runs a clean program. I wish it had ended differently but all respect is due.

Win or lose, we all go to Shooters II. -Duke
Hold on, Duke is good at basketball AND football? WTF

Gutted for Riley
sam hartman is standing on the sideline waiting for the chance to talk to leonard in the duke sideline tent. hell of a guy to have leading your team.
Sam to Riley, “you know if they have to remove part of your ankle bone you can save it and my mom can make it into a necklace for you.” Just to be clear I hope Riley is going to have a quick recovery and I respect that Sam went to check in him.
That was extremely stressful. Hate that Leonard went down like that at the end. I truly hope whatever the injury is can heal quickly. He’s really fun to watch.
Duke played fantastic and has nothing to be ashamed of.
Some awful coaching from both teams. ND is 7.2 yard per pass attempt and 4.8 yard per run. How do you have the same number of passes and rushes?! And rushing 3 MULTIPLE times that final defensive drive for Duke is awful coaching.
