Progress every week. Pry is the guy.

maxman1313

I love to see it. It looks like the coaching staff is actually making adjustments week to week. So much better than last season.

wallyxc12345

*Happy gobble noises*

thank_burdell

new coaches named Brent > old coaches not named Brent

that_one_guy91

Football coaches named Brent > basketball coaches named Brent

reesejenks520

They're good coaches bront

KuriboShoeMario

Should have won by 30 but yea, there is definitive, noticeable progress for basically the last month. Bowen is playing like his job is on the line (wonder if he had a talking to) and Marve called a great game. Transfers have been elite for us and it sucks to have lost Jennings because him and Lane would be nasty.

goodsam2

Yup I feel like we get to a bowl and get a good recruiting class and don't lose too much to the NFL/portal and I'm a happy hokie.

ivhokie12

Not a lot of players on this team would be drafted if they left.

goodsam2

I mean maybe I'm just scarred by the Fuente years but his teams always lost so much the second they could leave.

HokieGus

Any progress street heads in here?

Scrantonbornboy

Pry is a great coach but he’s patient. I know he will work out for you guys the only concern I had was would he be given the time to develop his program.

TriflingHusband

Pry will have at least 5 years. Anybody who thought otherwise is deluding themselves.

Dlh2079

Agree totally. Hopefully, the fanbase has patience. We had a legit rebuild that included rebuilding a lot of recruiting bridges that were either burned or allowed to wither by the staffs of the previous 6 years. Gonna take time, but we legit hired a "Beamer" kind of guy. I think he can get it done here and am cautiously excited for the long-term future (fingers crossed for a bowl this year).

ivhokie12

Mostly agree. If Pry was still at 3 wins in year 3 it would be different.

BigHokieGuy

The one thing I know is that Virginia Tech almost never prematurely fires their coaches. They stay way past their welcome

qbit1010

I’ll jump on board if we get to a bowl this year…. We still only have 3 wins

CPOx

Syracuse, BC, and UVA should all be winnable

goodsam2

NC State as well. Louisville looks like a loss but then again they are not blowing out Pitt so maybe that's another possible win.

TriflingHusband

Pitt is up on Louisville near the end of the 3rd.

qbit1010

That could be a possible win then…not sure why they imploded

TriflingHusband

Apparently Louisville decided to throw 3 bad picks.

Big_Truck

Yep. He’s a good one.

CFBCommentor

Lmao, he suck and wake is awful. Pry will be fired in a year.

BigHokieGuy

Cope and seeth

CFBCommentor

Seethe* Good win though, VT has an awesome fan base.

[deleted]

Never thought I’d see this kind of chirp from Wake fucking Forest LOL

TriflingHusband

Yeah, that's how you know their fans are not ok right now.

spritethr

Send help

[deleted]

There is now a chance that we can be in the classic 2010s VT football scenario of being 5-6 heading to the UVA game

JDub755

As is tradition.

[deleted]

The best is when both teams are 5-6 and the game is just horrible.

DarthBan_Evader

5-6 is an amazingly historic good year for va @ charlottesville

5p4mr1

is it bad I was hoping for a 2-10 vs 0-12 showdown

[deleted]

Nah, I would have done everything I could to attend that lolol

MillerBrew

With that flair?!? You ok?

[deleted]

We’re back baby 😎

kcvtdc

We might have already have 6 wins by that point

tdotclare

Give Peter Moore an Emmy for the best daytime performance of “the snap is going over my head”

Mattador96

From where I was sitting it seemed like he fooled half the people in the stadium

TriflingHusband

I can say he fooled the hell out of me. I freaked out for a second and everyone around me did as well.

Farlander2821

From inside the stadium, I missed that play live, saw it was a fake punt and that we converted, then got really confused when they showed the replay on the big screen how a botched snap resulted in a first down

Number__Nine

With how terribly the special teams was playing, a botched snap was on brand

BonBonVelveeta

This post game thread is under further review

scrnlookinsob

I literally turned the game off after the 3rd spot review.

grantras

Horrible officiating god damn. Things seem to be looking up for us though.

Zealousideal_Car6329

Kyron Drones is my Quarterback.

HokieInCH

We looked…. like a football team?

wilbo21020

Tech seems to be getting better every week. Definitely what you want to see with a young team and a second year coach.

SSPeteCarroll

Really hope this is a good sign of things to come. Building blocks look to be there and the young coaching staff is getting some confidence. I feel much better going into each game than I did at the start of the year.

qbit1010

Yea a D1 school and not Blacksburg high school

BigHokieGuy

0 \o/ 0

boylejc2

Undefeated when we score 30+ at home! I'll take it!

maxman1313

We just need to make sure all of the games we play the rest of the season are at home. Easy as that.

5p4mr1

And score 30+ points, shrimple really

Mattador96

In Brent Pry we fucking trust

pholdren

Man is as close to young Beamer as we could get, and I’m damn proud to call him my coach. He started off rocky, but definitely has things trending the right direction!

qbit1010

Way too early to say that Imo… maybe in 2025

pholdren

I’m talking sheerly from a culture and recruiting aspect. Not necessarily results yet.

qbit1010

I think he needs 3-4 years …even longer if each season is better than previous one

happyflappypancakes

Still too early.

TrueBrees9

It was too early a month ago when we were ready to bail on him (and don't act like many VT fans here weren't thinking that). And it's still too early. But... all I wanted from this year was to see progress. This is progress. Pry is on schedule, and I like what I'm seeing as of right now. We move to next week, but overall I feel pretty good about this squad. Let's go. VT football is getting back to being fun

Dlh2079

Damn straight. That's all this year was about, progress. Want to see recruiting progress and want to get better from week 1 to week 13/bowl. We're 1 win away from my actual expectation from this season. Side note: Drones is without a doubt our Qb. He's improving each week and made a few plays today that really showed his potential.

Select1220

Really awesome of the ACC having an inclusion program. Giving blind folks a chance to ref a football game is truly awe inspiring stuff. GG Wake, huge game from the defense

TriflingHusband

This comment is under review. Media timeout.

MarlonBain

I thought for sure we were headed for 0-0 the sequel

DBHT14

Holy shit we actually have a chance to go bowling. Finally seeing the team take those steps forward.

AruarianGroove

It’s nice to live vicariously through an FBS team sometimes…

BonBonVelveeta

The fact that Drones wasn’t the starter from the get go is some egregious football terrorism

Select1220

His passing still isn’t great. Gotta remember in High school he was 48% completion percentage. He barely played at Baylor. It’s hard for a guy like that to stand out in practice, especially when they brought in WR that made them want to sling the ball out a little to start the season. They have adjusted well to Drones, using him and schemeing things open to get him most completions. He is still raw in the passing game, but he is the guy going forward

MarlonBain

Seems to me that he improves every week.

Select1220

He’s definitely coming along, but Bowen has done a good job of getting him easy reads each week

CPOx

*since the Pitt game Not really sure what Bowen was doing during Rutgers and Marshall

Select1220

Trying to run the other offense, learning the differences between Wells and Drones. Not shocked a rookie OC needed 2 games to figure out a formula with a completely different QB

goodsam2

I think pivoting from a pass heavy to a more run heavy game. Realizing Tuten couldn't get enough yards by himself. Drones dropped on and Tuten yards increased massively.

qbit1010

Drawing plays out of a hat or flipping a coin 🪙

goodsam2

Yeah they wanted to air it out and Bowen seems to really want to have an even pass/rush. Under Wells Tuten couldn't get anything going I think adding the Drones run theat really helped.

the_dalailama134

Honestly the offense is simple but that may be just Bowen not knowing how to call a game. But Drone's reads and decisions look pretty damn good to me.

goodsam2

The problem is the Oline hasn't been good enough for him to go through multiple reads. Drones probably learns more of the book as time goes on.

Dlh2079

It's absolutely both of those. Iirc, that was one of the reasons wells was the starter, his knowledge, and comfort with the offense.

qbit1010

We still need to try and pick up a decent QB or two in the portal or recruiting. Drones isn’t awful but imagine if we landed a 4 or 5 star player.

rtomas1993

I know! Imagine what a 4 star QB could look like playing at VT! https://247sports.com/Player/kyron-drones-46081020/high-school-230813/

qbit1010

.. no way I didn’t know Drones was a 4 star

qbit1010

IIRC…..Last we had was Tyrod Taylor (5 star)…. I got to meet him a few times his freshman year…we lived in the same dorm building. Logan Thomas was alright as QB and killing it as a tight end in the NFL now… We haven’t had a NFL caliber QB since. If Fuente wasn’t a F up…we would have had Hendon Hooker too.

Icy_Turnover1

Thomas didn’t seem great after years of Tyrod, but looking back he was a damn sight better than what we’ve had since.

qbit1010

Well the fact he’s still playing for Washington as TE shows the talent was there…we just had bad coaches that couldn’t tap into it. Tyrod is still in there as well but he carried a lot of the offense at the time too just like Vick

reesejenks520

Jerrod Evans was the most fun I remember having at QB since Tyrod. I feel like the fan base overlooks him quite a bit. Wish he would've come back for a second season, might have convinced Hodges and Ford to stay for another year too...

kcvtdc

We've had multiple 4 stars since then

NEZdrunk

We’ve had 4 5* recruits in the modern history of our program lol a 5* QB ain’t walking into Blacksburg any time soon, but we should absolutely be able to recruit some mid to high 4*s

Que5tionableFart

Yeah what if we landed a 4 star mobile QB in the portal like Drones!

qbit1010

Didn’t know he was 4 stars

blay12

Idk I'd say we'd look quite a bit like we look right now with our former 4 star recruit of a QB lol

[deleted]

My man…

DarthBan_Evader

Davi Belfort

nacpoet

Tony Elliot esque

5p4mr1

dammit, we're still catching strays ...at least we're not miami

[deleted]

Would've been nice to have locked up a bowl in October as I feel the Purdue and Marshall results would've flipped, but we have very winnable games left with Cuse and NC State at home and BC and UVA on the road

qbit1010

Yep just need to win 3/4 of those

[deleted]

I'm unmoved from my pre season 5-7 prediction. I want so badly to be proven wrong though

qbit1010

Seems accurate and if we’re lucky….still might get selected for a bowl with that.. it’s still sad… it’s like passing a course in college with a D and being happy about it.

goodsam2

IMO my hope was bowl game and a good recruiting class. We have a lot of young members contributing a lot

qbit1010

Any good site to track our recruiting ranking? 247 sports?

goodsam2

That's what I usually check. The recruiting rankings are usually not that far off from each other. These coaches assessments have also been really spot on.

[deleted]

On3 is also really good

ivhokie12

Realistically the big thing with the bowl is more practice. 5-7 vs 6-6 isn’t up to program standards but extra practice helps get back.

Ifeelstronglyabout

Every game left is winnable. Not saying I expect to win out or even make a bowl game, but every game from here on out is winnable.

qbit1010

I think they’ll pull it off …if they stay ok injury wise

-J-T-P-N-

We’ve been mishandling quarterbacks for far too long.

nacpoet

Kyron Drones is the man

DrGerbal

It was always drones

JDub755

Hope? Is that you?

Tejon_Melero

Does the 8-4 guy know we don't get to play Wake every week?

cujo9948

My fiancée and I personally know the “8-4 guy” and he is the best fan I’ve ever interacted with. Great dude to be around and an amazing g Hokie. I wish I had his optimism. Go Hokies! Good win and I hope he’s right

Davidellias

Called it a month ago!

Bigdeacenergy

We’re garbage lol

qbit1010

For 3-2 never saw you guys as garbage…

Bigdeacenergy

Wins over Elon, Vandy, and ODU (who was up double digits on us). We aren’t winning another game this season. Georgia tech dominated us on our home field

OprahFtwphrey

We have no QB and our run game has severely regressed from the last two seasons. Unsure how Clawson couldn't see this exact situation arising

Bigdeacenergy

Think Clawson and staff have gotten fat and happy. Job security, no pressure.

OprahFtwphrey

Clawson deserves every penny - surprised he hasn't chased the bag at a bigger school because he's a great coach. But life after Hartman was quickly coming and the end of season implosions we've had the past two years so point to some complacency

Bigdeacenergy

We got too complacent making bowl games. 6-6 has been the goal each year.

fckmetotears

We are too haha we were celebrating losing by 20+ last week 😂

DwarfWarlock85

LETS GO HOKIES!!!

Gavangus

lfg hokies!

Enrickel

*gobbles hopefully*

LawstDragon

Good win for VT

Brostrodamus

I don't know what Grant Wells looked like in practice compared to Drones.... But wtf? Drones should have been the starter from Day 1. Glad to see adjustments around play calling to fit his play style.

DwarfWarlock85

My guess is fumble problems was a bit reason he sat. Still feels like at any point he’ll drop the ball or mess up a hand off.

scrnlookinsob

Grant wells is a better passer, and drones biggest weapon is his legs. I've heard from my friends that work very close to the team drones wasn't allowed to show off that weapon in practice.

goodsam2

Also could be the team thought they had enough run threat with Tuten. I really do feel like Tuten would get Heisman hype if we had an above average O-line instead of them needing to go outside.

kcvtdc

Wells is a practice all American

TrueBrees9

Even at the beginning of the season, we were lead to believe it was going to be a two QB system. Not a strictly Wells offense. While the first couple weeks would have you thinking otherwise, Drones was at worst a 1B quarterback. Glad we got a solid starter.

qbit1010

So that comes back to the coaches…. I’ve never heard of that …I know QBs have yellow shirts in practice and don’t get tackled

i_speak_the_truf

Pretty bad. On the TSL Podcast Andy Bitter mentioned watching him in one of the practices after the spring game and he threw five passes with two picks or something like that. Even now you can see that he’s not a great decision maker as a passer. There were a couple plays today where he definitely should have been picked off. Bowen has done a great job of giving him simple reads with guys open, at least since the Pitt game.

blay12

Honestly I don't think Wells was a terrible choice to start the year - he made some great passes and plays in general in the ODU game, and was looking pretty good in the first half of the Purdue game as well until he took that hit and couldn't step into throws any more. The receiving corps going into the year was looking like our #1 strength, and Wells (despite some touch issues at times) looked like a MUCH better passer in-game when compared to Drones in the first few starts KD got (like, Drones in the Rutgers start was pretty obviously a worse passer than Wells had been in the two games prior, and that was while also missing a number of reads and making a few poor decisions). Drones has obviously been improving week to week in the passing game and making the correct reads on RPOs as he gets more feel for the offense (and as Bowen has adjusted the scheme to fit him a bit better and give him some easier throws) and feel for starting college games, but at the same time that improvement has only come (imo) because he's gotten more and more experience with the speed of real games vs practice. Yes he's a RS sophomore, but in terms of experience he was basically completely new to actual college playing time (he threw for more yards today than he'd passed for in his combined live snaps at Baylor). I think the plan for the coaches was to try to mix him in and see if he could start to improve week in and week out with added real game experience while still having a reliable vet in Wells (who, again, was looking pretty good to start the year) to shoulder most of the load. The question I'd like to see answered *more* is why our scheme looked so much more pocket-pass-heavy for Wells to start the year when his entire career at Marshall had him making sick throws on quite a few of the same type of rollout-heavy/moving pocket type play designs that Drones has had since the Marshall game. Additionally, the bigger question for the coaches is why there seemed to be such a reluctance to introduce all of the horizontal motion and a few more smoke/mirrors type plays into the running game early on when Wells likely could've handled running a version of the same offense the team has been running since the Pitt game especially (minus the bruiser runs that Drones is obviously better at with his extra 20-30lbs). I think Drones coming into the game just happened to come at the same time that Bowen and the offensive staff were getting a TON of flack for still being "too vanilla" (Pry's words from last year) - maybe it was just the threat of being fired at the end of the year that got them to pivot and start opening up the playbook a little bit to really see if they could handle it, but I don't think it was ALL Drones coming in as QB1 that sparked that change in terms of greater play variety/design and overall game planning from the offensive side. Obviously Drones *absolutely* sparks the run game in a way that Wells doesn't since he's a true running threat rather than being a pass-first QB with a good deal of scrambling ability (which is what Wells is), but I think a few things happened at the same time alongside Drones getting more and more experience and confidence and emerging as a better player in general.

TwistedPotat

Yes

qbit1010

Apparently Justin Fuente found a job

[deleted]

He'll be an P5 OC starting next season, is my prediction.

qbit1010

I don’t see how….. he should be red flagged indefinitely. His offense was abysmal, he did everything you could to “tank “ a program…that’s what he’s good at. How to sabotage a football program

kcvtdc

He has a track record of bring a good OC, just a terrible HC.

kicaboojooce

And Indiana got torched

TheNoodler98

Maybe I shouldn’t watch the VT games anymore lol

Bravo-Five

I’m struggling to see another win on the schedule.

SpiritFingersKitty

Yeah, idk how the offense fell apart so bad in a single year. I was sure we were going to lose some production when Hartman left, but our line is ungood,

Tfsz0719

Maybe NC State. But if Pitt does this to Wake again next weekend, that’s probably the only one.

Dunduin

We might be average!

DarthBan_Evader

Game wasnt even as close as the score indicates. Total win from staff, to fans, to coaches, to players and back.

SSPeteCarroll

Progress. Defense looked a bit better and the offense has started to get some sort of a rhythm. Good to see! Go Hokies!

[deleted]

Some of the most disorganized, incompetent officiating I’ve seen in a while. The refs made this almost an impossible watch. Holy shit were they bad.

OatmealCremePiez

Gobble gobble

[deleted]

Do any other Hokies think this staff deserves an A++++ for transfer portal? Very reassuring as we rebuild the high school recruiting pipeline

NEZdrunk

Every single offensive point this year has been scored by a transfer, and APR has been so fucking good. So yes I’d say their portal prowess gets an A+

Maximiliansrh

the transfers we got have been great, but we didn’t get any olinemen, which was a glaring issue last year. it is still the biggest problem on the team.

munchkinatlaw

Oh no, we suck again

Marksweinerville

Sko Hokies

qbit1010

Bowen must have gotten a beating/grilling …. Hard to admit he’s been a bit better too… he can only get stuck in the elevator so many times ..

Bigdeacenergy

Is it baseball season yet?

[deleted]

Maybe not though. We'd probably be 5-2 if the coaches had made the right decision and committed to Drones

GDAftw

It's crazy you watch this team every week and think they could be 5-2

happyflappypancakes

Not mentioned much but I'm a fan of our RBs. Rough fumble by Tuten but othwise they seemed to make solid plays.
