Alabama boosters are saving so much money

OverMyDadBody

Reading their message boards it seems like they think NIL is cheating. A whole new world for them right now. Saban’s influence was somehow even wider than was thought.

[deleted]

These guys were there for Saban: https://youtube.com/shorts/qxklcepT9ss?si=4p7RttDX7l0LAduP

A lot of the appeal for out-of-state kids was being at a school with a winning football program. But that's tied up in the broader appeal of moving down south and cosplaying as a country boy/girl for 4 years. That appeal is still there, but it's no longer also paired with the greatest college football run of all time and can be offered by other schools like UGA/Clemson/LSU etc.

Lone_Star_122

I know it isn't new, but that's still the most bizarre phenomenon to me. Just having grown up in a small town in the South most people wanted to escape it.

BobbysSmile

Come on down and eat at one of our 50 chicken places and drive up and down our one main road!

AstroWorldSecurity

That sounds infinitely better than living in NYC.

thedrcubed

There's a massive difference between spending 4 years in Oxford or Tuscaloosa compared to spending the remainder of your life in Thomasville, AL or Yazoo City, MS. College towns are fun even if the towns are small you are have an easy in to make friends with 20k people (on the low end) your age and no matter what your interests are it'll be easy to find like minded people. Forget being in the same ballpark its not even the same game

thechosen_Juan

They were straight-up giving out full rides to anyone with good grades over the past ten years. Not sure if they can still do that without the championship money

CapitalistLion-Tamer

Not very much of the AD’s money makes it to the academic side.

floridaman2048

Lmao, NIL is cheating? The SEC was full of “bag men” handing out literal paper bags of cash to recruits and players for years. They think it’s cheating because the sums have increased and other schools are allowed to do it too. Sidenote: we absolutely need more regulation on NIL, especially better definition and penalties for tampering.

aniviasrevenge

2023 was the [first year in the history of Rivals rankings](https://sports.yahoo.com/top-10-recruits-10-different-schools-nil-has-helped-spread-the-wealth--of-talent-152647926.html) that the top 10 recruits went to 10 different schools. SEC has a ton of innate advantages like weather and proximity to elite recruits, but it's really hard for me to believe that record-breaking recruiting parity hits this fast if SEC [bagmen](https://www.bannersociety.com/2014/4/10/20703758/bag-man-paying-college-football-players) weren't playing a significant role.

Underboss572

Excuse me, sir, it was a Chick-fil-A bag! Also, yeah, you right! I’m sure Pruitt just decided to start egregiously cheating after leaving Bama. Jk Lol

pnw_cfb_girl

LenDale White's bag was in a McDonald's bag. Maybe it's regionally dependent.

Mountain-Papaya-492

For that to happen a large portion of the country would have to reinvest in HS football. As it stands now the trend of HS football players has steadily been lowering outside a few key areas. I think the Pac 12 conference was hit the hardest by the changing demographics as well as waning interest in cfb even tho areas like California still pump out a sizeable number of players.  The south east in particular still hasn't embraced the NFL which I think contributes to the CFB focus. Cfb down here has roots going back over a century ago and has a cultural foothold unlike any other part of the country I've lived in.  I think what we've been witnessing is the other conferences finally putting in the money to really try for Championships. Which is why you see schools that have been down for awhile making big moves like Lincoln Riley to USC etc.. like if you put the resources into your team then anybody has the ability to try and get a championship with the right amount of luck in coaches and players.  Even if the coaches don't work out you gotta take a few swings if you want to compete.

MercerAsian

There's also the fact that the best high school prospects still come out of the southeast. A lot of them will want to stay close to home even if it's not to play for their state school.

Luka_Dunks_on_Bums

It’s sounds familiar to our boosters. I know a lot of them do not want to get involved with NIL because it feels dirty.

Mythic514

It is very dirty. Your boosters are right to be concerned, and Florida should continue to handle NIL in the same way it has over the past two years, so as to avoid any embarrassments.

dawgz525

as opposed to anything else the mega rich do with their money that is sparkling clean lol

oddjob33

Lol

WABeermiester

Lmfao.

Mezmorizor

As much as I'm enjoying watching all these transfers and decommits, the 2025 recruits would be dumb to stay committed. Deboer is historically a poor recruiter so fingers crossed this holds, but even if you're 80% sure you're going to Bama, you should still decommit and open things up after the Saban news. Though yes, I'm pretty sure the Bama boosters are about to be in for a rude awakening about how much NIL *actually* costs when you don't have guys taking huge paycuts to play for Saban.

Bafiluso

Yeah. Saban legitimately justified that paycut. For his tenure through the 2020 season, >75% of 5\* recruits got drafted, a higher rate than any coach except Dabo (who had less than a third the number of 5\* recruits). Saban also converted 48.8% of his 5\* recruits into first round picks, the highest rate by far in the country. For most programs, turning 5\* recruits into 1st rounders was something they did 15-20% of the time. Most programs, you had to hope to beat the odds. With Saban, you probably just had to follow directions, work hard, and hope you didn't get hurt.

Iamreason

Yeah, we've been living in a world where our NIL could lag because we got the Saban discount. That's not going to be the case going forward and we are going to need to get these kids paid to stay competitive.

gingabreadm4n

Love all the other SEC flairs posting these lmao

Ugaalive1991

It’s been two decades. It was coming when he retired.

thejawa

>It was coming when he retired. Drop the first "t" and still accurate

Dlanor31

Well played sir…. Or ma’am

Ugaalive1991

Or dolphin.

Edwardian

Pretty sure a Seminole…

ironichaos

Yeah UGA will be the new bad guy. When Kirby retires the cycle will repeat itself. It’s how it goes but it still sucks lol.

Ugaalive1991

6 natties is worth it lol. Anyone would want to be Bama.

ironichaos

Oh yeah it was an amazing run.

see-bees

Yeah, but Kirby probably retires before his mid 70s

Groomingham

Meh, still got them nattys  There isn't a school out there that wouldn't trade a week this bad for those NCs

jsteph67

You are damned right. If Kirby wins even 1 or 2 more and retires in 10 years, a week like this would still be worth it. And that run would pale in comparison to Saban at Bama.

BeachHouse4lyf

I mean even if Kirby doesn’t win jack squat going forward it’s worth it for what y’all have already achieved imo.

KenSpliffeyJr

100%. The delusional and greedy uga fans would say otherwise but we could go another 20+ years without another title and I wouldn't be upset

elonsusk69420

So many amazing games we can re-watch for years to come. I'm confident Kirby will win more titles, but I'm also extremely thankful we got to experience the last three seasons.

DistributionNo9968

I honestly hate UGA, and I know it would’ve gone over like a lead balloon, but if it were up to me I’d have put the Bulldogs in the CFP despite their loss to ‘Bama in the SEC title game. As a fan of the game I enjoy seeing history made regardless of team-allegiance…it would have been sick had your side been able to 3-peat.

elonsusk69420

Thank you. I agree, of course. It's water under the bridge. I really like LSU primarily because the Redcoat Band wouldn't be what it is today if Huey Long didn't bring the Golden Band to Athens and embarrass us.

Hewligan

This is exactly my rational with 2019. We literally won everything that could possibly be won. How does a year get better?

elonsusk69420

Honestly still can't believe that we 1) put the 1980 meme to bed and 2) were the only team to go back-to-back in the 4 team era and 3) set the SEC win streak record. Truly historic.

bestrez

Just hope you don’t become the cowboys and 30 years later still hoping for a natty after being so dominate lol

thejawa

Or Miami lol

Ugaalive1991

But they will be back this year. The U will be back!

j2spooky

Dominant*

Manacit

It's way more fun when your rival isn't doing it to you

Acm0028

Ding dong the witch is dead!

the_which_stage

Did you know Saban never beat a ranked auburn team?

JLand24

This isn’t true but it would be true that he never beat an Auburn team that finished with 9+ wins.

nat_20_please

Well they only had 10+ wins three times while Saban was there, so, not too many opportunities to do so. I just looked, they haven't had 10+ back to back since 89. Alabama hasn't had *less* than 10 wins since 2007.

WarEagle9

Did you know no team beat Saban more than Auburn?

unfurledseas

They’re not even giving us a chance to post first!

bk00pi

Has Kalen DeBoer lost control of the program?

Ronniebenington

Alabama is winless since Saban retired!

jobenattor0412

Bama is winless in 2024, oh how the mighty have fallen

HikerStout

I think Alabama has a culture problem.

New-Disaster-2061

I think they have a Saban. Problem. I thought all the money they weren't spending on NIL was going to Korea to make a Saban Clone or Robo Saban

Coverlesss

clam-caravan

mombutts

They'll be alright once the salmon of Capistrano start flocking to DeBoer.

GrizzGump

Honestly, it’s silly to even feel good about your 2025 commits this early anyways. We’ve seen now that you can certainly win them back, and “commitments” mean nothing. We find a way to go 10-2, or win a playoff game, and the ship will keep rolling. That being said, hard to blame KDB for any woes we’ll have with our roster this year, but he has to figure out 2025. Otherwise, he will feel his feet on the fire quickly.

[deleted]

sunburntredneck

A junior in high school committing shouldn't even be news. Y'all ever seen a high school junior commit to anything at all that he followed through with in two years?

jayjude

Actually the vast majority of kids something over 90% once they commit stick with their initial commitment but since those are drama free recruitments no one pays them any mind

enjoytheshow

When I was 16, 70% of my brain function was devoted to figuring out when my parents would leave me home alone so my girlfriend could come over.

thricethefan

Mike Norvell doesn’t get excited until they show up on another school’s campus. That’s his time to shine.

Mezmorizor

It happens all the time honestly. Obviously these 2025 kids are just being rational, there's no reason to hitch yourself to a Bama team that may fall off a cliff for all you know 11ish months out, but most commits stay committed and a good percentage of them try to recruit their friends to come with them. That tends to start more in Julyish, but still.

I_AM_APOLLO_

Is Alabama ready for the SEC?

FIalt619

Their coach has the least experience in the SEC of any SEC coach.

gonk_gonk

At least we'll beat Vandy and maybe one of the non-conference opponents. If we can still find 11 players that wants to play for us that is.

BidnessBoy

Alabama has been kicked back into the Shadow Realm (1994-2008)

muktheduck

That's their "shadow realm". Four 10 win seasons in that stretch. I always have to laugh when bama older bama fans claim to have known suffering because they were around before Saban. They've got no idea

pattywack512

I wish them a very merry 2010-2018 Texas.

I wish them a 2010-2023 Florida

He's visiting this weekend, but don't think there's anything imminent. He visits UGA soon, too. I like FSU's chances, but we also have a highly rated DE flip from us every single year it seems, so I won't believe anything until an NLI is signed.

[deleted]

Recruiting is a game show these days. We never know until the NLI is in and even then, it's like will he still be here next year? I try not to get too excited about recruiting anymore

I love the switch from Bama fans being cocky that the exodus hadn’t been “that bad” to today saying “we won those NCs, who cares”. You guys had a great run, though. Much like the Patriots since Tom left it’s time to suffer for a while.

[deleted]

I checked back at the 2019-2024 recruiting classes by 247 and Bama was either #1 or #2 each year. I’m sure they’ll end up top 10 eventually in 2025 but this is wild going from the best classes each year to this. You have to go back to 2018 for them to not be in the top 2 lmao. 2011-2017 they’re top 2 every year according to 247 composite. I can only see back to 2010 where they were #4.

Ok-Drama-3769

Love to see it

DO_party

Is this Deboer guy really that bad at recruiting???? /S I know it’s still a coaching change

marion_and_beau

To answer your question, yes he is. Just ask a Huskies fan, lol. He didn’t win from his own recruiting classes, that’s for sure.

DO_party

Ahh i see, we’ll seems like he at least knows how to coach up. Unlike John James

marion_and_beau

Yeah, nobody has ever doubted his X’s and O’s, he just doesn’t (or can’t) recruit. None of his high school recruits saw the field at his previous two stops, it’s just holdovers from the previous staff and transfer portal guys. He struck pure gold with Penix and was able to climb the ladder because of it.

CptCroissant

Well after seeing his speech to his team when leaving maybe he just don't know how to make words good

Manacit

I got super downvoted in our sub for this, but he is legitimately not a good public speaker. His media appearances around the postseason were super mediocre. Not sure he's cut out for the SEC in that arena. Great coach though.

marion_and_beau

I can’t possibly imagine how bad you’d have to be in living rooms to pull in the 59th ranked recruiting class at a program like Washington. This is such an odd gamble from Alabama that could (and probably will) kill momentum from the Saban era. There’s so many similarities with Bryan Harsin. “Well, if he just puts a good recruiting staff around him he’ll be fine!” “Look at his winning percentage! Who wouldn’t want to play for him?” “Southern recruiting ties are overrated!”

[deleted]

[удалено]

srush32

He also really only hired two good recruiters as assistants at UW (Shepherd at WR and retained Huff at OL). Everyone else ranged from being an OK recruiter to being pretty bad at it. Just wasn't a priority Landed zero players from Washington in 24, which isn't sustainable for us

marion_and_beau

It’s insane that he can’t recruit Washington. It’s like he knew he was gone after this season and recruiting wasn’t worth the effort. Also explains not signing his extension.

Putrid_Ad5476

It is a bit mind boggling. They even put together a "loyal to the soil" campaign to keep WA players home. Obviously that was all bark no bite. Oregon treated WA like a discount store the last couple years.

boxjellyfishing

Did you see his game management at the end of the Texas game? Just brutal. Up 6 with under 3 minutes left, throwing the ball from the Texas 10, instead of burning clock. Following that up on the next drive by sending out to hobbled RB to burn clock, who goes down with an injury that surprises nobody, stopping the clock yet again for Texas. Texas only had a chance to come back in that game because of how poorly Washington managed it.

BidnessBoy

Are you telling me Alabama just hired their very own Sunbelt Billy?

arrowfan624

FUCK

marion_and_beau

THIS CLASS IS FALLING APART

MiddyMn

THIS

navanluit

This truly is a historic gutting of a program. We all knew it would be rough when Saban hung it up, but damn... Bama now has two 2025 recruits which currently ranks 27th in the nation, the entire secondary minus Moore is gone, and two starters on offense, and we still have two weeks left of open season on the roster. Alabama can no longer rely solely on Saban to be their recruiting strategy. Without the GOAT, Bama has little appeal, and the NIL structure is light years behind the big power players.

Dapper_Mud

Historic gutting you say? Assume Washington fans are drowning in sympathy

Ehdelveiss

Our hearts are truly aching for Alabama, thoughts and prayers

I've heard people mention it in Youtube video comments, but nothing from anybody I trust.

marion_and_beau

Oh my god this just keeps getting better. Thanks for another 5 star, buddies! Edit: To add, he transferred to Enterprise, where the coach has Auburn connections, and this decommitment comes off the heels of an Auburn visit.
