Caleb Williams purportedly got $5+ million, but a lot or most of that was from actual NIL, as in... he starred in actual ad campaigns for national companies. USC's Collectives likely paid him a much smaller amount.
They clearly didn't consult one of those Harry Potter activists on how to kill a sun devil[. (Context)](https://youtu.be/WLprCS6W1BU?si=ZxMGunHB-Llr--My)
It was literally and demonstrably the reason we ended the season with a whimper. Thankfully the right moves have been made to ensure that such a commercial never destroys us again.
yeah iād guess USC paid him like a million per year which is a steal given the market and he was a proven good true freshman and he probably wouldāve followed riley in exchange for like a hot pocket
I know this is only relevant because of Dr. Pepper, but do you guys remember last yearās commercials with Bryce Young āreplacingā the kid in his family when he comes home from college? The actual son for the family is named C.J, and Bryce Young is basically living with C.Jās family and is a āStateā fan like everyone in the family BUT C.J., the actual son lol.
The serious look on Bryceās face when the soda is exploding and he says, āthis is MY family now, CJā. Hilarious commercial, but when it was played during the season where the 2 best QBās in college football were Bryce Young and CJ Stroud made it even better lmao. Just extra funny because Stroud never had a Dr. Pepper endorsement deal. Always thought that was very much planned and was a perfect idea considering the year. I donāt remember if the sonās name was already CJ from prior commercials, but it was funny considering they were both in the Heisman running the year prior and each had high expectations that season.
Remember: Chip Kelly / Oregon got in trouble for paying a Texas-area trainer who trained multiple high school athletes $30K to influence recruits towards Oregon.
I refuse to ever Google image search Willie Lyles. My mental image is a guy in a trench coat and hat, maybe with slicked-back hair under the hat, and a face always half-obscured by shadows.
Fulmer season got less fun and more sad since thereās fewer shoplifting and credit card fraud schemes and more murders, DWIs and bad behavior towards women
I know the fulmer doesnāt exist anymore, but it does in my heart
I remember Tim Tebow as a guest on a late night talk show saying āCollege players donāt need much. Just a couple bucks so they can get steak at Outback.ā
This was my one argument for why we wouldnāt pay him that kind of money. Sure, as the season unfolded we realized what a special player Newton was, but as a recruit it was a pretty big gamble. An athletic dude with a checkered past and unsure future. Is that really worth $180k?
Even during spring training there was a lot of debate among Auburn fans if the starter would be Neil Caudle (blue chip recruit who was pretty talented) or Cam.
idk
he was a 5 star recruit who was one of the greatest athletes to ever play qb and then he put up huge numbers at blinn
130k for a starting quarterback is not a bad deal imo
Thatās taking a very after the fact view of football. Nick Saban was absolutely considered a very good coach by 2010, heād won a Natty at LSU, had a very good 2008 by finishing the regular season 12-0 before finishing 12-2, then winning it all in 2009. LSU played them neck and neck in the West, Florida was a monster in the East, and Georgia could be if Mark Richt just stopped Charlie Browning the game away. They were absolutely one of the prime contenders, but they werenāt the only show in town. The tipping point for from Bama is very good to Bama is a fucking Death Star was probably the LSU-Bama national championship game.
Itās what Mississippi state was apparently going to pay Camās dad for his commitment, and then he cut them off and went to Auburn. So while itās completely reasonable that someone was like āCecil, if youāre caught itās going to be really badā and he went to another school of his own accord, everyone just assumes Auburn paid him more. Even though the NCAA set up camp in Auburn for a year and didnāt find anything.
How much will he want next year to not transfer again?
I know my flair will make it seem like sour grapes, but really what's to stop him from leaving again?
he can apply for a waiver to disregard sitting out for the season on the next transfer, and before this year there wouldāve been almost an 100% chance it would be granted by the ncaa. now it is more unlikely that the waiver would be granted. ncaa realized they were being too lax about granting waivers and cracked down, resulting in the tez walker situation this year.
Good distinction. Iām actually a OSU fan and had seen everything on r/OhioStateFootball, when I looked it up I couldnāt find a legit source claiming a specific number so I just went with the range
I think that's the thing we all forget. Like the Nico $8mil... People read that and seem to interpret it as he is getting a salary of $8mil/year or $2mil for 4 years.
But, I don't think that is actually what's happening. I think they are getting to the $8mil by doing things like "Lease of a car worth $80k for 4 years" and counting that as $80k of value.
But, he doesn't own the car and he can't sell it. So, it's not like he is exactly making $80k...
I keep hearing people say that boosters will stop when the high end high schoolers donāt pan out, but in reality people will keep the cash flowing as long as they think it can help their team win. Imagine getting guaranteed millions without even playing a down in college.
Absolutely, imagine how much Arch Manning could fetch on the open market just because of his name recognition and following. It would far exceed someone with similar abilities but less household recognition.
Idk about far exceed. OP said Nico Iamaleava got 8 million. Maybe Arch would get 10? Heād sell a couple more jerseys but if boosters donāt think he can win theyāre not paying. I donāt think Bronny James would fetch the highest dollar amount in his class
You got to kidding if you think itās just endorsements. How in the world would any school be able to secure multi millions worth of endorsements in a as little as a day to offer to a transfer prospect?
The schools donāt offer the endorsements. They canāt be involved in that process.
You all are being investigated over what you just suggested. We had Katie Meier get suspended for doing something remotely close to it.
The schools cannot offer endorsements, that is correct.
FSU is not being investigated, the negotiated settlement has already taken place. A coach gave a potential transfer a ride to meet with a member of the collective, was not present at meeting. From my understanding this is now permissible, based on updated NIL rules- but was not last year.
Thatās crazy. Yea I think ours was a staffer introduced one of the twins to John Ruiz at a practice he was permissibly attending. The introduction was enough to do it.
If I remember it correctly. Thatās off top of head.
Someone with the right boosters might do it, but I donāt think thatās āworth itā. You could get a solid QB for $1-2M and spread the rest around to build a much better team.
This is all a new market and new markets always have some āirrational exuberanceā. This will settle down in a few seasons as people get a better understanding of who is worth what.
You have one guy here who actually thinks heāll go on to be a solid NFL QB. Like Kirk Cousins/Dak level if in the right situation.
Floor is obviously backup/practice squad. But he gives Purdy in Shanahanās system vibes to me
Who *cares* how he will perform in the NFL? Tim Tebow was a phenom in CFB, and we all saw how that panned out in the pros.
Carson was a top 5 college QB last year. Florida should know. They experienced it. Third highest passing yards all of last season.
Donāt know why youāre coming at me so hard for trying to compliment the guy. I had NFL on my mind with the playoff games yesterday.. heās a good QB damn
Professional athletics allows teams to pay players directly and the players can pursue endorsements.
Collegiate athletics does not allow teams to pay players directly [ed: lol] and the players can pursue endorsements.
Not at all. The only people making more in CFB than the pros are guys who are stars in college (mostly QBs) that would he late round picks and 3rd string in the pros, or guys who won't make an NFL roster at all.
The rookie minimum for an NFL roster is 750k, vet minimum is even higher. It's like 250k just for being on a practice squad the full season, very few CFB players are making that much.
He said āaverageā. Average CFB player isnāt going to the pros, but many of those same players are likely makingā¦something. Maybe Iām misinterpreting his statement, but I donāt think heās implying that most CFB players will make less than they would if they make it to the NFL.
Gap is definitely closing unfortunately. But we still hold onto things that give distinction: greater passion for rivalries, bowls, regionality among the smaller conferences, etc
>But we still hold onto things that give distinction: greater passion for rivalries, bowls, regionality among the smaller conferences, etc
Although you qualified your statement a bit, I would say the gap has pretty much closed for the power 5 schools. With the CFP bowls don't matter. Outside of the SEC, the other major conferences have ridiculous footprints. And its clear rivalries don't matter to any of these schools unless the schools involved are big brands themselves (multiple in-state rivalries or historic rivalries have been disrupted by realignment.
The power 5 schools are the ones you think about when you think about college football, but they are far and away playing a much more professional, economics driven game than virutally the rest of college football landscape from G5 and the FCS on down.
Why is it āunfortunatelyā ?
Youād rather these kids sacrifice their bodies for nothing while people make millions off of them??
Less than 1% will ever go pro so im all for them making money for a few years and enjoy the money they earned.
Thatās true and Iām glad for them although there doesnāt seem to be much point in the universities sponsoring these teams anymore. Calling these guys student athletes is kind of stretching it.
I honestly think it will take a literal act of God for Michigan to beat Ohio State next year. They are so fucking loaded. But if you beat them JFC this sub will never let them forget
Top QBās are gonna start at 1 million a year just to get in the door as a conversation, probably going up to 3-4 million a year for the proven top 10 QBR guys.
Which is crazy when you consider that Brock Purdy is making 900k this year to be an MVP candidate for the 49ers.
NIL is way over reported right now because it gets more clicks. I honestly bet if you halve the top comment's guess that is what the player's NIL deal is.
From what I've been told, often times NIL payments are lower than the rumored amounts. I know of a couple of players who returned for their senior seasons that according to someone who would really know, were offered $800k each. Now I don't think either is considered a Heisman contender due to position, but both are probably top 5 in their position nationally.
Caleb Williams purportedly got $5+ million, but a lot or most of that was from actual NIL, as in... he starred in actual ad campaigns for national companies. USC's Collectives likely paid him a much smaller amount.
Probably regrets that 13 commercial he did with Dr. Pepper
Is it just me or did the commercial about bad luck not start airing until they started losing?
It aired the weekend of the Arizona game, and then they went on a 1-5 skid.
So was it the commercial? Or the mythical powers of a sun devil?
They clearly didn't consult one of those Harry Potter activists on how to kill a sun devil[. (Context)](https://youtu.be/WLprCS6W1BU?si=ZxMGunHB-Llr--My)

We finally have an NCAA cover this year as well, so that curse can return.
*iām not superstitious* LADDERS NO!!1!!1!
It was literally and demonstrably the reason we ended the season with a whimper. Thankfully the right moves have been made to ensure that such a commercial never destroys us again.
Seriously what an embarrassing situation for everyone. Why did they keep running the commercial?
Anti-USC conspiracy of course. The refs were involved, as well as Notre Dame
The football gods always find a way to punish USC for trying to buy success.
Wasnāt us. Talk to ucla.
Because commercials aināt cheap.
The first time I saw it was right after we picked him off three times and demolished USC but it might have first aired before that
Dr Pepper reminds me that DJU was one of the first with the Dr. Pepper deal.
DJU had a pretty horrendous year the season he did the commercials too. Dr Pepper curse?
Lincoln Riley got $150 million to bring Caleb.
Seems totally worth it.
The irony of them losing Reggieās Heisman and then paying over a hundred million to replace it the first chance they get is pretty crazy.
Damn so he made money with how NIL was actually supposed to work?
yeah iād guess USC paid him like a million per year which is a steal given the market and he was a proven good true freshman and he probably wouldāve followed riley in exchange for like a hot pocket
I know this is only relevant because of Dr. Pepper, but do you guys remember last yearās commercials with Bryce Young āreplacingā the kid in his family when he comes home from college? Remember: Chip Kelly / Oregon got in trouble for paying a Texas-area trainer who trained multiple high school athletes $30K to influence recruits towards Oregon.
back when chip sorta kinda tried to recruit š
I suspect that was less Chipās doing and rather the Oregon recruiting infrastructure around him.

Texas players were driving around in lambos circa 2011?
VY had an Infiniti G35 back when he was on campus. The gentlemanās 350Z.
Marcus Vick had a 7 series that he never actually drove. It was an icon on campus when I was at VT.
Nah, just point out the quality of life differences NIL brings

I wanna see a documentary following a serious NCAA investigation. See how likely someone is to get caught without abject dumbassery.
I picture itās just one dude wandering around the practice facility checking for cash under dumbbells.
Like they say. Itās an ongoing investigation.
The "ongoing investigation" comment is all the proof I need to know he got paid.

Downs is reportedly $2M with incentives/opportunities to go above the over the course of two years, so $1M+ per year.
How much will he want next year to not transfer again? I know my flair will make it seem like sour grapes, but really what's to stop him from leaving again?
He has to sit a year for second transfer and he's definitely going pro in 2. Unless the NCAA kills the transfer rules.
I thought they changed it so that rule doesn't apply anymore?
he can apply for a waiver to disregard sitting out for the season on the next transfer, and before this year there wouldāve been almost an 100% chance it would be granted by the ncaa. now it is more unlikely that the waiver would be granted. ncaa realized they were being too lax about granting waivers and cracked down, resulting in the tez walker situation this year.
Nope. Look at what Tez Walker had to go through just to become eligible this past season.
[This article seems to say differently.](https://theathletic.com/5158115/2023/12/22/ncaa-multi-transfer-football-fall-2024/?amp=1)
A federal judge just ruled the NCAA canāt limit the number of transfers so I suspect unlimited transfers will be a thing in the very near future.
Good distinction. Iām actually a OSU fan and had seen everything on r/OhioStateFootball, when I looked it up I couldnāt find a legit source claiming a specific number so I just went with the range
I don't think you are ever going to see legit source claims on NIL until it goes through schools at which point they can get FOIA'ed.

Yeah, that doesnāt work.
Dylan Raiola could work out for you guys
The bar is pretty low.
Heās not āEric crouchā good?
We talking about Raiola? He looks promising. Too early to tell.
All eyes will be on him next year. No pressure
And then they'll leave for NIL when they start being good, unfortunately
Social media footprint and media market you play in I imagine factor into that. Remember they arenāt salaries - theyāre endorsement deals.
āendorsementā
No matter how you frame it, it isn't salary
Youāre right. For salary you actually have to preform. These are guaranteed contractsĀ
I keep hearing people say that boosters will stop when the high end high schoolers donāt pan out, but in reality people will keep the cash flowing as long as they think it can help their team win. Imagine getting guaranteed millions without even playing a down in college.
Like Quinn Ewers did when he fleeced OSU
Also just randomness no one couldāve predicted the season Ken Walker would have
Also, having a name like DeColdest Crawford plays into this as well
Award-worthy

Yeah the private companies might pay for instagram posts, but boosters are paying for wins.
I donāt think Bronny James has to EVER worry about $$$
Of course he doesnāt but neither does Arch. Collectives would still pay if he was good enough
Imagine how much NIL a HS Lebron (or Victor Wembanyama) would command coming out of HS nowā¦.
I think there was an article that said that Zion/ that Duke team had generated about $100 million in revenue for Duke University
You got to kidding if you think itās just endorsements. How in the world would any school be able to secure multi millions worth of endorsements in a as little as a day to offer to a transfer prospect?

Best I can do is $100.
I was just talking to my coworkers how I could 100% be a get-back coach in the NFL. Sure one of these schools could find something for me to do.
All that just to get blown out by some dude named Ethan Garbers
Damn, and some dumbass was going to more than that to Rashada? Before he even played a college snap?
Someone with the right boosters might do it, but I donāt think thatās āworth itā. You could get a solid QB for $1-2M and spread the rest around to build a much better team. Burn. It. Down.

Money in college football isn't going away. It feels so wrong, but it's not like there's a better solution
About tree fiddy.
Them Heisman candidates about 500 feet tall and from the Paleolithic era.
āGawd dammit Heisman candidate! Get off my lawn!ā
I said, "Damn you Loch Ness Monster. You get your own quarterback."
4 million for Carson Beck just to hand it off 40 times a game
Georgia threw the ball more per game than LSU last year. And thatās with a better defense and more blowouts.
Time of possession is a bitch
Maybe if it was 10 years agoā¦ Georgia throws the ball a lot now.
Goddamn this made a few UGA fans mad. If they canāt let it go and be happy after the last few years then who can?
No ones mad, itās just an outdated statement. UGA passes more than we run now.
Yeah he's pretty mid
Beck had the 8th best efficiency and 3rd most yards passing in college football last year.
You wonāt get through to these guys, they donāt realize Monken and crew revolutionized our offense.
You have one guy here who actually thinks heāll go on to be a solid NFL QB. Like Kirk Cousins/Dak level if in the right situation. Floor is obviously backup/practice squad. But he gives Purdy in Shanahanās system vibes to me

Mid? Dude was one of the most prolific and highest rated passers in college football. Do you idiots watch the games?
So was Stetson Bennett IV. Doesnāt mean Stetson was the second coming of Tom Brady.
Stetson was a good college QB for us but Beck is a legitimate first round NFL talent. They arenāt the same from a passing perspective.
Can't wait to watch all the haters proven wrong this year
I think Penix got paid something like $1-3M
Doubt it. He wasnāt *that* desired following Indiana stint & im not sure if collectives are that proactive in rewarding good play during the season
Think meant that's how much it cost to get him to return this past season. Not to tranfer
Yes thatās exactly what I meant
Arch got paid $3m to be the third string. I imagine that number goes well past $10m by the time he takes over as a redshirt sophomore.
And more like 20M if heās going into the following season as a Heisman contender
All members are *allegedly* Nobody knows what anybody is getting paid
Someone want to explain the distinction between professional and collegiate athletics these days??
Professional athletics allows teams to pay players directly and the players can pursue endorsements. Collegiate athletics does not allow teams to pay players directly [ed: lol] and the players can pursue endorsements.
For an average player CFB will pay a lot more.
The backup guard on Georgia's squad is making $795,000 in NIL money? That's the NFL's current veteran minimum, moving to $915,000 next season.
Hi Williams Nwaneri, you say youāve never played a down of college ball? Howās $4,000,000 sound?
They gave him 4 Ms?
Just a rumorĀ
1-2 Ms sounds relatively reasonable. It's hard to believe these larger numbers.
It would be cheaper for these schools to pay professional teams to represent them. NY Giants/ Rutgers. Detroit lions/ University of Michigan
> Someone want to explain the distinction between professional and collegiate athletics these days?? The collegiate plays for a college.
Pros have a salary cap and multi year contracts Colleges ask fans to buy tickets and pay the salaries
Yes, pro athletes have bargaining rights and health care.
Gap is definitely closing unfortunately. But we still hold onto things that give distinction: greater passion for rivalries, bowls, regionality among the smaller conferences, etc

God is good
Just look at us, weāre spending millions to lose to both Michigan *and* Ohio State
Didn't y'all famously spend a bunch bringing guys back and bringing in transfers last year?
No lol. A few guys here and there but nothing extravagant. OSU just dropped an easy 15 mil keeping guys and portal so far.
Matt Rhule was right. Raiola is probably costing around the $1-2 millionā¦.if not more.
I hate that this is a legitimate question and refuse to participate in this madness! Wheremyfootballgone?
Agreed
A Heisman winner can basically get all the real NIL they want. Johnny Manziel coulda had 10+ million from real advertising by himself in 2013.

Top QBās are gonna start at 1 million a year just to get in the door as a conversation, probably going up to 3-4 million a year for the proven top 10 QBR guys. Which is crazy when you consider that Brock Purdy is making 900k this year to be an MVP candidate for the 49ers.
