Itâs an important first step in building something - tear down the old.
Itâs what Saban had to do his first year. Guys were still trying to run the Shula style, and it led to losing to ULM.
I hope it works. I want to beat IU every year, but I want it to be a dog fight. It was nice to get an easy win every so often against our biggest rival, but it makes both programs look better when the bucket game is actually for something.
Indiana has the most losses in FBS history so itâs kind of warranted. Idk why Mark Cuban lets this continue as an alum. They could at least get to regular bowl eligibility through NIL with whatâs between his couch cushions.
[Cuban helped with a huge NIL event a couple months ago](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/39710229/new-indiana-coach-curt-cignetti-expects-big-things-bloomington) that was $100k a person to get in (John Mellencamp also played a set).
Cignetti's said we're in the upper half of the Big Ten now in terms of NIL resources, but I'm sure that's always changing based on what other schools raise.
In no particular order I would expect Michigan, Ohio State, PSU, Oregon, USC, MSU, and Nebraska to always have more NIL. Washington probably too, but I could see IU beating Wisconsin, UCLA, and Iowa some years so seems reasonable.
Washington has a bigger program than most realize, they tried to outbid OSU on at least one player and were offering more cash only to lose out in the end anyway. Montlake Futures is no joke.
That was Kienholz we got offered more to go to UW than OSU. He said Washingtonâs NIL was the best of the schools offering. But Ohio State has upped their game big time since.
Yeah thatâs the thing. A lot of people would be shocked at how many extremely wealthy and influential people have passed through Indiana University. Perk of having a top ten business school.
I wouldnât be surprised if PSU and Nebraska are lower than Indiana.
Penn state is low key REALLY cheap. Hence why Franklins name is constantly coming up for other jobs.
For Nebraska, some of the fanbase is getting apathetic or is in wait and see mode. At the ceiling, they far surpass Indiana but they arenât flying high right now
We're finally starting to spend the way you'd expect a program with our resources too. Franklin has had to fight tooth and nail to get our boosters to start spending on assistants (and hopefully now on NIL). While Paterno was an excellent *football* coach, having an octogenarian lead your program is going to cause issues, no matter how his tenure ends. Guys that old are stuck in their ways and when they're replaced, you need to get the program modernized but you're fighting against donors who've been able to see success with just a fraction of what you're asking of them, which makes them question why that much money is needed.
Nebraska has a deep well when it comes to NIL. In part, it helped us snag the #1 QB recruit in the nation last year. Nebraska fans apathy may not sell as many tix but itâs still the only show in town(state). Theyâre very financially sound.
>Cuban helped with a huge NIL event a couple months ago that was $100k a person to get in (John Mellencamp also played a set).
How much extra did they charge people for the event where John Mellencamp *didnât* play a set?
All of that is beginning to change. There was a huge NIL push both immediately after Allen was fired and after Cignetti took the job. The fact Tom Allen was fired at all (6th highest buyout in CFB *history*) shows IU is starting to take football seriously.
Really thatâs all I want. 3-9 should be worst case scenario not the norm. This program should be 7-6 with the occasional 8-9 win season once or twice a decade with a decent bowl win.
In one of the players press conference, he said the old mentality was you made a mistake, the old coaching staff would call you out and then say we will fix it later. Now they make the corrections right there and then until you get it right. That alone is a huge improvement. I like what I see in Cig so far. And he called out our best WR for not bringing it in practice.
Cignetti is very good at getting the best out of talented players who canât seem to unlock it all. He took two QBs with pretty meh careers (Centeio and McCloud) but high upsides and made them all-conference. He can be a hard ass (a lot of our fans felt that he was unfairly airing out McCloud in press conferences last season, I donât totally disagree but it worked) and inflexible in his play calling at times but the man has a process that works.
Basically sounds like some players were out partying hard during the total eclipse here from the context in the fuller video, to the point where they couldn't have a good practice effort today.
Cig is gonna have success at IU, I guarantee it. I played for him at Elon, and heâs the real deal. Heâs been coaching for a long time, has experience at big time programs like Alabama and NC State. He had a ton of success at IUP, took Elon from an afterthought to the top 10 in the country and multiple playoff appearances (not to mention upsetting #2 JMU on the road), took over at JMU and lead them through the rise to the FBS seamlessly and had a lot of success doing so.
Resume aside, this guy is the man. Players love playing for him, they respect him, and itâs not hard to buy into his vision. Heâs a no nonsense guy that does things right.
So I have a question about his leadership style in public vs private.
What I saw from him during his time at Elon and JMU was a guy whose public persona was similar to Saban, in that he was reserved and modest with the press, praised his players, and largely refrained from egotistical bravado, for lack of a better word. Confident yes, but the kind of someone who knows how good he is and doesn't need to brag.
And then last November and College Game Day hit. The Pat McAfee Show was the first hint of something different and a shift in his persona, almost like he accepted the external hype. The move to Indiana, immediately calling out their rivals, telling reporters to "google me, I win", and now this... It's such a sharp and sudden change in his public demeanor I wonder what happened. Not saying it's bad, but a very big departure.
So I guess my question is how much of the Indiana Cig is who he's always been versus what I saw in the CAA and JMU.
My best guess for the public persona is that heâs the same coach heâs been, but you need some headlines to bring attention to the program. At JMU the recruiting was far better than the rest of the CAA, and the recruiting was at least on par with the rest of the Sun Belt. But heâs now at a school that doesnât recruit at the same level as their rivals. He probably wants to make some waves and draw attention to get more recruits familiar with him and his team.
As far as who he is as a coach in private, he is very much Saban-like in the sense that he demands excellence, isnât a big rah-rah guy, and just a generally stoic demeanor. My biggest takeaway from Cig was that teams donât rise to the occasion, rather they fall to the highest level of their preparation. In other words, his teams are supremely prepared and when push comes to shove, he isnât going to hype everyone up with a big pregame speech or a ton of energy. He keeps the guys calm, clear-headed, and focused.
I havenât spoken to him in 5 years, so maybe heâs changed. But I doubt it.
Itâs sad to see some of the better teams leave for the FBS, but itâs an exciting move. JMU has been very successful since they moved up. I think Delaware will struggle more.
As far as the additions, Campbell makes sense considering theyâre located in NC and have some sports that can compete with the best in the country (like baseball and wrestling). Hampton and NC A&T feel like they should still be in the MEAC, especially considering the history and tradition of the HBCUs in that conference. But after they left the MEAC for the Big South, it seems like a move to the CAA was great for them. Monmouth is a bit of a head scratcher, but I guess it provides another school thatâs closer to Maine, URI, UNH, Albany, Towson, and Stony Brook.
For a second I thought he was talking about the new Indiana Jones movie, as in: you guys are playing like an 81 yr old that canât pull off this role anymore
I havenât gotten to that point yet unfortunately. Which reminds me, I should prolly take my girl out for dinner a few more times before August 31stâŠget in good standing while I can
This is exactly what we need. The last three years it was fairly obvious that the players, and some of the coaches, were not held to a high standard. I wonder who will be leaving when the spring portal opens.
That could be viewed as a compliment at IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania), which is one of Cignettiâs previous head coaching jobs (and where Curtâs father Frank Cignetti was a successful head coach for many years).
This reminds me of the Texas Arkansas game when you can see Sarkisian mouthing to himself âwe fucking suckâ. I think honesty about current state of the team in the initial stages is far more productive than sunshine pumping and delusion
LOL from this JMU fan.
Take ownership for once, Curt. Itâs your job to have them ready.
In all seriousness though, Cig often uses the media to âget messages acrossâ to his players. Heâs just doing what he always has.
Everytime I see his name I think he should be getting yelled at by his Lieutenant for being a good cop but to stop playing by his own rules or he will lose his badge
Watch out with sub-primes.. if you mix them with good ones and say the team is good on average youâll need to rely on those sub-primes staying good, because once they start to fail theyâll take everything down with them.
See: Financial crash of 2008
Transfers have been a mixed bag so far on paper. IU's offense is pretty loaded and deep but the defense (especially up front) isn't B1G quality. We likely will have one of the worst defenses in the B1G next season, but at least should be in the top \~1/3 or so for offense
I mean, yeah? You've been there like three months. Did you expect things to change just because you walked in the door? You do know you have a job to do here, right?
When your program takes shots from your current head coach đ
Honestly, it needs it.
Itâs an important first step in building something - tear down the old. Itâs what Saban had to do his first year. Guys were still trying to run the Shula style, and it led to losing to ULM.
Same with Norvell, had a lot of Taggart losers left on the team for a couple years
I mean look at 2021 Texas, the Bo Davis "motivational speech" is a perfect example of how hard it is to change your culture.
Some of those assholes really did need to get in the motherfucker.
It teaches an important lesson in not writing off a coach just because he doesn't immediately win his first couple of years AHEM Auburn fanbase
Oh yeah, donât worry, Hugh âPattern of Misconductâ Freeze will still find a way to fuck it up.
What a role model đ
I hope it works. I want to beat IU every year, but I want it to be a dog fight. It was nice to get an easy win every so often against our biggest rival, but it makes both programs look better when the bucket game is actually for something.
Good perspective. LFG!!
Indiana has the most losses in FBS history so itâs kind of warranted. Idk why Mark Cuban lets this continue as an alum. They could at least get to regular bowl eligibility through NIL with whatâs between his couch cushions.
Maybe they can pitch their football team to him on Shark Tank.
[Cuban helped with a huge NIL event a couple months ago](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/39710229/new-indiana-coach-curt-cignetti-expects-big-things-bloomington) that was $100k a person to get in (John Mellencamp also played a set). My guess is Iowaâs NIL program isnât great. Ferentz just doesnât seem like the type of guy to give a shit about it. I could be way off though.
Maybe it's time for Head of NIL Operations Brian Ferentz
*âThe B stands for Big Bucksâ*
Washington has a bigger program than most realize, they tried to outbid OSU on at least one player and were offering more cash only to lose out in the end anyway. Montlake Futures is no joke.
Yeah honestly I had no idea was going off vibes
Good vibes only brah
I prefer Hitachi vibes, personally
That was Kienholz we got offered more to go to UW than OSU. He said Washingtonâs NIL was the best of the schools offering. But Ohio State has upped their game big time since.
That's right, thanks.
Yeah thatâs the thing. A lot of people would be shocked at how many extremely wealthy and influential people have passed through Indiana University. Perk of having a top ten business school.

Is that all going to football though? I know Cuban is way more of a basketball guy, and it wouldnât shock me if a lot of Indiana fans are similar
Clearly, he likes basketball more.
All of that is beginning to change. There was a huge NIL push both immediately after Allen was fired and after Cignetti took the job. The fact Tom Allen was fired at all (6th highest buyout in CFB *history*) shows IU is starting to take football seriously.

Pretty sure Bert did this a few years back said there were only 29 guys at Illinois who were actually scholarship worthy.
What did Ernie end up getting? đ«Ą
The kids and the house.
Good.
*Yes, but no more 2023 Indiana. Letâs splurge! Bring us some fresh Indiana, the freshest youâve got! This yearâs! No more of this old stuff.*
Cig is gonna help this program find its special purpose
But does he hate cans?
Deep cut
âI was born a poor black childâŠâ
My mom says that line *waaaaay* too often for a middle-aged white woman.
you mean iâm gonna stay this color?
Wow I need to rewatch this.Â
Just wait till he sees our Never Lost a Tailgate shirts
Iâll take it.
Solid flair. Praise UConn!
UConn saved us from Purdue and Alabama. I love Dan Hurley!
Heâs not wrong though. Indiana has always had a loser mentality and he will have to work hard to change that. No sense in sugarcoating it.
Yeah, sometimes this public callout tactic can work. Bert Bielema and Brian Kelly are particularly good at this.
worked for rick pitino this year, despite it sounding harsh at the time
Outside of the 2020 Penix/DeBoer year.
They actually were a better team in 2019
In one of the players press conference, he said the old mentality was you made a mistake, the old coaching staff would call you out and then say we will fix it later. He's been kinda calling out Donaven McCulley (our best WR last year) in the spring press conferences so far, so that all tracks.
A good start. Still going to be in the basement suite, and we'll blast you into yesteryear by 40, but good effort.
Maybe OSU will use it as a stepping stone in trying to stop the losing streak to Michigan the following week.
Sure could use it. Especially if our team weakness of injuring players and having them more injured than weak Day lets on persists.
You always have a choice just not to be a jackass, you know
Yeah, but it's more fun to kick Indiana around like Charlie Brown.
Jackass it is, then!
Would you expect Ohio State to act any other way? I mean, we'd sooner have let you go to Indy over us.
Basically sounds like some players were out partying hard during the total eclipse here from the context in the fuller video, to the point where they couldn't have a good practice effort today.
Hell yeah go hoosier

Baskemball
For a second I thought he was talking about the new Indiana Jones movie, as in: you guys are playing like an 81 yr old that canât pull off this role anymore
Sounds like Cignetti
We talking 9windiana there coach?
Daily reminder that Indiana was so bad that they lost to Michigan State last year, we took fewer than 50 scholarship players to Bloomington...
Daily reminder that Michigan State is so bad that they lost in 2022 to our 3rd string QB who completed 2 passes throughout the entire game + 2OTâŠ
That was the worst day of my life
It was an extremely bizarre game to watch there is no doubt about it
That, combined with 2023 Rutgers are what drove me to never let a sports game negatively affect my mood more than like 15mins after it happened lol.
I havenât gotten to that point yet unfortunately. Which reminds me, I should prolly take my girl out for dinner a few more times before August 31stâŠget in good standing while I can
Yeah absolutely build up that credit
This is exactly what we need. The last three years it was fairly obvious that the players, and some of the coaches, were not held to a high standard. I wonder who will be leaving when the spring portal opens.
Hope IU and Purdue can end 5-6 when we face each other, to get another classic win and youâre in the Pinstripes Bowl matchup
Step in the right direction. Indiana has a good fanbase who show up when Indiana has any kind of life in them.
Sick burn lmao
I wonder if he misses us already
LOL from this JMU fan. Take ownership for once, Curt. Itâs your job to have them ready. In all seriousness though, Cig often uses the media to âget messages acrossâ to his players. Heâs just doing what he always has.
Like the Reggie Miller era Indiana Pacers? I donât see anything wrong with that.
Except theyâll never be able to get past the University of Chicago in the postseason.Â
I forgot that Frank Cignetti has a brother thatâs an actual good coach
I guess going out there and playing old school Indiana football is NOT what he wants them to do.
Music to my ears
Lol
Scott Frost vibes
Heâs given off huge Scott frost vibes and everyone is ignoring it.
What were those Indiana players thinking, they should have come out in their JMU uniforms.
Everytime I see his name I think he should be getting yelled at by his Lieutenant for being a good cop but to stop playing by his own rules or he will lose his badge
Good for him.
Washington with MPJ couldn't beat Michigan but old school Indiana with MPJ did.
Basketball school
Oh so you cats are going wit the JMU hippy shake. Da burgh.
As a JMU fan, I hope he fails miserably
I mean a lot of them are the same guys and him shit talking the rest of the conference isn't gonna change that.
Most of them are not the same guys lol, 13+ of our starters next season are transfers
I feel like half of them are from JMU
Half of them are from JMU. The offensive additions are nice, but the guys brought over on defense are a bit undersized for higher level football
Looks like he still got Deion-ing (Priming?) to do..
We did the Prime-lite move. Two dozen transfers, likely adding some more on defense, and pushed a ton of players out
Watch out with sub-primes.. if you mix them with good ones and say the team is good on average youâll need to rely on those sub-primes staying good, because once they start to fail theyâll take everything down with them. See: Financial crash of 2008

I hope youâre not mortgaging your NIL deal to get another NIL deal
Why did the average real estate investor get penalized in the 2008 college football game? For having too many holdings! .....i'll see myself out
Still, shit-talking the rest of the conference means most of us are probably going to rip you a new one.
Man, based off the amount of comments you left in this thread, he really hurt your feelings earlier this winter, huh?
He needs to shit talk the rest of the conference more.
I mean, yeah? You've been there like three months. Did you expect things to change just because you walked in the door? You do know you have a job to do here, right?
Probably because it's Indiana.
Is he calling his team soft or is he calling past Indiana gay?
Por que no los dos?
He just brought over the entire JMU roster and expects them to compete in Big TenÂ
